HERE IS THE RECIPE: I had to copy down the recipe from a screenshot so I could make it. Thought I would share. 1 cup all purpose flour 2 tbsp flax seed 2 tsp ground cinnamon 1/2 tsp salt 1/2 cup honey 1 cup (8 oz) greek yogurt 1 cup whole wheat flour 1 tbsp baking powder 1/2 tsp baking soda 2 eggs 1/2 mashed banana 1 chopped apple (can use applesauce) 1/3 cup frozen huckleberries (or blueberries or serviceberries) Topping Ingredients: 1/4 cup brown sugar 3 tbsp whole wheat flour 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon 1 tbsp flax seed 2 tbsp cold butter Directions: Combine dry ingredients in a large bowl. Bake at 400 degrees Fahrenheit for 18-20 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool for 5 minutes before removing from pan to wire rack. Serve Warm. Yields 16 muffins.
It seriously warms my heart whenever I see you spend time with Benjamin. I can't imagine how happy they will be in the future for all those wonderful, child memories you gifted them! I thankfully also have fond memories of my mother when I was young, running around in the garden helping her out! I remember gathering yellow daisies for her so we could dye our eggs in easter! Or sitting hours long outside enjoying the gorgeous show (and smell) of our sweatpeas, which were her favourite flowers. God bless you Laura, you are doing an absolute wonderful job raising them both! Wish the world had more people like you and Aaron! 🤍
I loved seeing Laura show Benjamin how to level the salt before adding and then to see him make the connection and do the same thing when she handed him the spoon of cinnamon was priceless. Their brains are like little sponges at that age. You’re a great mama, Laura, letting Benjamin get involved and have some autonomy to experience things without you controlling every second of that experience. I’m always super impressed by that.
My children gifted me a service berry tree for Mother’s Day, many years ago. I have always let the birds have their fill, but I think I’ll try your recipe, Laura. Thanks for continuing to enlighten us with new ideas! The added bonus is sweet Benjamin footage!🤗🫐
Five minutes after this video ends and I'm out for the first time harvesting the serviceberries off the tree I planted eight years ago, while the birds are in the branches chewing me out! Thanks Laura!
I went to college with Aaron in Southern California, he had to be 18 or 19 back then, we set up A.V. equipment for a conference center together...funny to come across him on this channel.
Laura, I have had at least one serviceberry in my yard for over twenty five years. The tree is everything you said it is in your video. Ironically, it wasn’t until yesterday when I was trimming branches that I decided to taste one. I didn’t stop at one! What a treat. The birds will now have some competition. 😉 Thank you for sharing.
I enjoy all your videos. Don’t mind the cooking/baking at all. You are using ingredients from the garden. It is a good example of why people should grow edibles. Benjamin is beyond adorable. You are such a good mom.
Do you have a playlist just for your edible plants in the landscape? It would be neat to have them all together (or in a compilation video). I don’t have a lot of planting space, do incorporating beautiful edibles into the landscape is a win-win!
I was told years ago where the name "Serviceberry" came from. Back in the day when people couldn't bury their dead because the ground was frozen, they would watch to see when the serviceberry bloomed. They would know then the ground was thawed enough, they could have a service for their loved one.

Benjamin is a cleaner cook than I am 🤣 I love how you spend time with your children. Picking berries the night before with Samantha Grace and today cooking with Benjamin. Thank you for sharing a bit of the same love with us 🥰
I have a two year old boy named Benjamin and a brand new 8 week old Gabriel! (And a husband named Aaron!) We watched this video this morning and he immediately had us make muffins with the fruit in our garden. We have been gardening with you for over a year now and I’m so overjoyed to have found you. A dream of mine was to have a garden with my kids, and your channel got me over my fear of my yard! From everything we’ve learned from you, we’ve grown a vegetable garden, fruit containers, a cut garden, a shade garden and beautified our lawn (Thanks Aaron)! Next up is trees and perennials this fall and drip irrigation!!!! Thank you for all you both do and the way you do it.
Ok, best video ever. I follow you daily and have learned so much about gardening, but this one warmed my heart and soul. Benjamin’s talent and willingness to learn in the kitchen is amazing for someone so young. And Laura, you have endless patience teaching and explaining when we know it would have taken half the time to just measure and mix yourself. Does Samantha Grace always have a smile on her face? What a beautiful, happy baby. Thank you for sharing these priceless moments of your life. I want to try that recipe now.
I literally cheered when Benjamin cut the whole way through the apple!! We planted an Autumn Brilliance last year and just love it. I’ve been wondering about using true native plants versus newer better cultivars, are they as beneficial for pollinators? I would hate to have lost some native species because of my desire for the eye candy at our nurseries. Thank you!
Doug Tallamy has done some interesting research on this. In short, the native species is almost always more beneficial to the ecosystem than cultivars. Cultivars can be less attractive or less nourishing to wildlife.
What is it about watching kids cook... It's the sweetest thing EVER! Laura, Benjamin is one lucky little man to have parents with the love and patience to let him experience the simple pleasures that life can offer. ❤️🥰
Hi Laura! Just loved the recipe for the serviceberries. I planted a serviceberry shrub in my garden in Berlin, Germany but never used the berries so far because there are just not a lot of recipe ideas around. Will try the muffin recipe for sure (hope to find all the other ingredients here :) Being a all city kid, I learned so much out of you videos for my own gardening. Thank you for that! It is really helpful for me that you also refer to the botanical names of all the plants. The German names tend to differ a lot from time to time (serviceberry = Felsenbirne - it doesn’t even have the word “berry” in it…)
Aaron’s question and the look on his face cracked me up when he asked, “ is this healthy?” 😂My son does the same thing whenever he eats something I bake. I love this video and hope for more baking with Benjamin videos! I look forward to baking with my grandson. ❤️🥰🧑🏻🍳
I live in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada (zone 3) so we call them Saskatoon berries here! I have them along my driveway between mine and my neighbour's house. They're the bush variety and get quite big. The birds get the berries from the top of the bush that I can't reach and I get the rest. We have an understanding 😂
This was adorable to watch. Benjamin is so funny and a great camera person showing the bowl. I was impressed. I love it 🥰 It is fabulous for you to have him help you with baking and cooking.
awww...benjamin is such a sweet boy, and he's also smart and very patient for his age, not to mention super cute~....gosh....not many boy his age that calm and follow instruction easily and precise too....good job both of you raising him right you guys #thumbsup
These grow profusely in our Ohio woodlands , so I'm excited to have a recipe to use. We also want to transplant a couple from our woods closer to the house. Second to gardening, birding is my favorite ,so this will bring more birds to our yard.😃
I had never heard of Serviceberry trees until I lived in Columbus Ohio. I lived in Bexley, where the governors mansion is and took a tour of the garden there one year. One of the former governors wives had undertaken a beautiful landscaping project of the grounds and had Serviceberry trees planted. They were beautiful and I made sure to plant one in my own garden when I got the chance. I highly recommend these beautiful trees.
I grew up eating these berries in Russia. They were always so welcome in early summer. I love the look of the tree and have enjoyed it in my yard in Virginia for years. Unfortunately they are not disease resistant on the East Coast. Rust is what affected my tree and the berries are inedible. Thank you for the video! I am glad you are sharing this tree with so many people.
This video brought a tear to my eye, remembering baking with my mom as a little kid. She is no longer here but the memories live forever. Thank you for sharing yours with all of us. ❤️
I did my best to pause and transcribe the recipe for those interested: Ingredients: 1 cup all purpose flour 1 cup whole wheat flour 2 tbsp flax seed 1 tbsp ground cinnamon 1 tbsp baking powder 1 tsp salt 1/2 tsp baking soda 2 eggs 1/2 cup honey 1/2 mashed banana 1 chopped apple 1 cup Greek yogurt 1/2 cup berries Topping: 1/4 cup brown sugar 3 tbsp wheat flour 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon 1 tbsp flax seed 2 tbsp cold butter Directions: Combine dry ingredients Beat egg in separate bowl with honey yogurt and banana. Combine with dry ingredients. Fold in berries & apple. Fill muffin cups 2/3 full Make topping by combining ingredients and cutting in butter. Sprinkle over unbaked muffins Bake at 400f for 18-20 mins. Let cool 5 min before removing
Oh my goodness, I absolutely love that you guys made something with berries and eggs grown on your own property! We just bought our first home back in January and I found your channel shortly after. I've always loved flowers and plants, but since my husband is military we have always rented and I could never really do much planting and gardening. Ever since buying our home and finding your channel, you have given me SO MUCH inspiration and wisdom. For the first time I have a beautiful garden in the making. We have deck planters and hanging baskets around our gazebo that are starting to fill out and be glorious. I have a fruit and veggie garden that is thriving and even producing already. We also have a mini orchard with a few fruit trees... And of course a bunch of plans for many garden beds 🤣 It's been so much fun and exciting and we are really enjoying the beauty everything brings. I've also loved teaching my little ones! Thank you so much for making these videos and sharing your experience and knowledge and giving us all inspiration. Because of that we are blessed with joy in our own yards. Now I want a serviceberry and chickens 🤣🙈 how big do serviceberries get when they're mature though? Do they stay about the size in your videos? Thinking I'll plant one for my backyard birds and one for us ❤️
Any time Benjamin is in a video, it’s 10 times better and they’re already so great! Can’t wait to see more of Grace! Love your little family! God bless y’all
Oh my gosh, Benjamin is simply adorable! I love how he sees the berries and his first response is a kind "thank you!" You are doing a great job with him, he is the sweetest!
I just love the patience you have with your son! I had three babies all under the age of five and I was so busy, but I regret not spending more time with each of them. Bless you Laura, you and Aaron are wonderful parents💚🙃
We just planted two Robin Hill Serviceberry trees. We planted them to feed the birds. I love feeding and watching my birds. Very interesting to learn I can pick some to eat also. I will be looking for the shorter serviceberry now.
Shad-blow because they bloom at the same time as the shad run, that is, when the shad swim up the river to spawn. When I lived in eastern NC, shad row was an early spring treat. (I have an amelanchior near the back of my house here in upstate NY- one of the first things I planted - and you're right that it gives so much pleasure year round.)
At the nursery where I used to work, we sold so many Serviceberry trees, single and multi- trunk. It's wonderful understory tree at the edge of the woods here - NW Indiana. We have many that grow natively, too. Here, it's often called Shadblow, because it fruits in June "when the shad (a northern fish) run. Loved watching Benjamin help you bake, adorable.
Omg, Samantha Grace is truly a smiley, happy baby. Her smiles make the whole scene vibrant, much like her brother's. I feel grateful to be able to follow your sweet family in gardening and life. If only I could grow berries too, but that's not possible where I live. Wish you all a great weekend ❤️.
I'm a passionate gardening senior who has been following your channel for many years. I have taken on a volunteer project to rejuvenate the courtyard garden space in a Long Term Care home, where my 96 year old Mom-in-law has been receiving compassionate care for over two years. Today, my husband and I just delivered an Autumn Brilliance serviceberry tree that we will plant in the garden. This tree was my #1 choice for a particular space - I discovered your video after buying the tree. I am sharing the muffin recipe with the Life Enrichment staff at the home,. When the tree matures enough, Residents and Staff can bake muffins together with the berries from their own tree. Your videos have been a big part of inspiring me to do this garden renovation. I am so happy to give back in this way, it brings me such joy. Thanks for all you do, and best wishes to your lovely family. Marcia Blom, Ottawa, Ontario Canada
I bought 2 service berry bushes a few years ago and have been fighting suckers ever since! BUT, the pleasure I get from watching the Cedar Wax wings and taking lots of pictures has been worth it. You have quite the little helper Laura! Such a smart little guy! Love watching him help you.
Hi Aaron & Laura! I've been a professional baker for 6+ years and watching Benjamin help is giving me the largest smile. My love of the kitchen and passion for baking comes from my mom. It's one of the greatest gifts a dad/mom can give a son/duaghter.
Aaron is such a guy. “Is it healthy”? I was waiting for him to spit it out! Benjamin is so good at helping with whatever needs to be done. Such fun watching him learn to bake. Great information about service berries. I’ve never heard of them so maybe it’s not a big thing here in the south. At least not in my area. I’d love to grow one!
We have been feasting on service berries from our tree for a couple of weeks! We pruned it into multi-trunk form and it is a really pretty little tree. Usually, the birds eat them all, but this year we netted the tree. I just took the net off to use elsewhere. I think I will go out and pick some to dry before the birds get them. Wish me luck!
It's a good idea to plant another one for the wildlife since that was a food source for them and few people have these conservation plants like serviceberries in their yards anymore.
It just brings tears to my eyes to watch you with your son. When he was helping you plant, it reminded me of my mom and me. And then to watch you bake together, lost it! My boys are 27 and 30....enjoy every moment. My mom taught me the love of the earth. She is 83 this year and still wants to garden! So my brother and I made some raised planter boxes for her. The tomatoes are in! Yay.
I never have heard of Service Berries and found this extremely interesting. Samatha Grace is beautiful and growing so fast!❤And ofcourse adore where Benjamin helps Mom with the muffins. Be still my heart!!💙
I planted serviceberries in my yard this spring based on a few recommendations. I tried the first ripe (ish) berry this week and it was delicious! I am so excited to see them grow and mature.
🤣I totally agree I planted 10 serviceberries, 8 bush cherries, 6 blackberries, berried treasure strawberries, and a few boysenberry this spring. I had one bush cherry planted a few years ago and it was loaded this year…. I can’t wait to make all sorts of things in the years to come with the abundance. Thanks for all your inspiration!
Benjamin is the cutest and sweetest boy! I wish I could have this tree, but living in Costa Rica maybe not. I will look for them when we visit my in-laws in WI. Maybe they can plant one for me there. Thanks for sharing!
Benjamin is the sweetest cutest little boy! My kids love Garden Answer videos, but its a whole another level of excitement when they see Benjamin and Samantha Grace.
Watching Benjamin help make the muffins with the biggest grin on my face. He is so sweet and reminded of when my boys were that little. Laura you had me considering a service berry tree but Benjamin sealed the deal. I will have a couple in my landscape soon! 💗
My son’s name is Benjamin also! But he just turned 21 and watching your Benjamin made me cry cause he even looks like my son did. They grow up so unbelievably fast. I miss that sweet sweet age. Your videos ALWAYS bless me regardless of what you are teaching us. I cancelled my Directv and have nothing but UA-cam and Netflix.... you are definitely one of my FAVORITE channels!!!! 😀❤️
Good Saturday Morning Laura & Gardening Friends 🌼 The berries look so lovely on the tree. I’ve never actually heard of service berries before. AND Oh My Hearts Goodness, the photo of the berries with Samantha’s sparkly grin in the background, is totally ✨Golden✨ Enjoy your weekend!!!
As you were describing them I thought, they sound a lot like Saskatoon berries. Then you mentioned they were called that. Yes, Saskatoon berries are great, to me they have an almond taste to them. Come visit Calgary, Alberta we have a farm named after them.
We had Saskatoon berries growing wild in northern Alberta which I think is a zone 2 or 3. Used to go Saskatoon berry picking all the time. Saskatoon pies are the best!
Laura started off saying service berries are underrated. Then she showed us this glorious recipe and told us to grow one ourselves. Now growers won’t be able to keep up with demand.
I planted a serviceberry last fall, this spring it bloom and had berries, then the farmer across from me nailed it with some Roundup spray on a windy day spraying his field. I'm so sad I had wanted one for years. I guess I will start over and plant it in the backyard this time. They are a beautiful tree, I love it when a flock of cedar waxwing has lunch, in the serviceberry at work, a beautiful sight.
@@tamararobinson2069 I don't think the young farmers realize what spray can do to plants and humans. I know a lot of famers that have died from cancer due to these herbicides.
I'm excited to learn that they can be a zone 9, a lot of varieties of fruit trees that y'all have up there only go to a 7 or 8 so I have to find different varieties or just go without. So it's cool to know I could have a the same tree, now to find the space.....
Good morning Laura and family, Beautiful berry trees, watching Benjamin helping you prepare for the muffins brought back memories of my children and grandchildren was so exciting they loved helping me bake . Hes wasn't messy at what he was doing he was very careful, so sweet hes growing up to fast, you all have a wonderful rest of the day, Jean, from Oklahoma Panhandle 6b.
Love all this, Benjamin is such a Sweet baker helper. I do not have grandchildren so it such a pleasure to see your babies. I totally look forward to them and enjoy it so much! Loved learning learning about the Service berry Tree too.:-)
What a very sweet and educational video today. Serviceberries have been on my landscape list after hearing you speak of them before. The attraction was because of the multi seasonal interest you’ve mentioned before. But, today I am realizing for the first time, that those berries are edible, so that particular tree has just moved up the list! What a treat to watch Benjamin baking with you. I had a moment where I had to laugh, because when you said, “we need to go get eggs“ in my world that means going to the store not outside to the chicken coop. 😆 The muffins look yummy and I hope to give the recipe a try!
I’ve never heard of service berries. My Mom had a crab apple tree which reminds me of your service berry tree. It would make the most beautiful crab apple jelly. In October I am ordering a crab apple tree to plant in my yard. I’m going to check into service berry trees.
We LOVE the videos - especially the ones that include Benjamin and Samatha Grace - AND Aaron too! What a beautiful family! Thanks for sharing them with us during your great gardening videos! 💝
Growing up in Canada we called the wild version Saskatoons. I'm just thinking I should plant one for our daughter who was born in Saskatoon Saskatchewan and has a June birthday so she could have berries for her birthday! Do you think I could plant one in a pot?
I’m Manitoban. Called the same in MB of course. My Grandpa’s favourite, who recently passed in March. Living in Toronto area now, referred to as serviceberry. Mentioned saskatoons here a couple months ago and no one knows that term.
@@MsJdub99 my parents lived in Tyndall MB when they were first married. I’m from Thunder Bay, ON which has a ton of wild saskatoons. I agree. People down in southern ON(where my husband is from) have no clue what Saskatoon bushes are.
Laura, I did not know that Serviceberries were edible! Now, I may have to plant one somewhere in my backyard. I clicked on the SHOW MORE under this video, but the recipe for the muffins wasn't there. Did you post it elsewhere? I love your sweet little helper Benjamin and Samantha Grace, they are both adorable. ~Margie
Hi…I am also looking for the recipe…. Pls type it up and post . Cause those muffins looks delish!! Benjamin is just tooooo cute … Mine …🥰 so wonderful watching him grow up. He’s going to be great big brother.
The garden looks so lush in your opening shots. You’re videos make my soul happy on so many levels. Thank you! …and Benjamin just gets more and more beautiful. Those eyes…..
i planted a tiny one this spring and was able to harvest about 5 berries. so tasty! i am looking forward to the next years ETA: the german name translates to rock-pear
I love the white wands Veronica you showed and I’m looking to plant in my pollinator garden along with Sweet Romance lavender, How long do they bloom for? I’m also in zone 6b.
Benjamin is going to be quite a pastry chef. Fond memories ... me and my niece. Brings tears to my eyes. Thanks for sharing . Happy Father's day, Aaron!
Watching Benjamin helping you make these muffins had me smiling the whole time. What a sweet boy he is. Also I feel we’re going to have a run on Serviceberries at our nursery now 😉 I agree they’re a fabulous tree everyone should have including myself
Another video that checked all the boxes: new information regarding the service berry tree (who knew?), baking, watching sweet Benjamin happily helping out. Priceless! Starts my day with a smile & gratitude 💖
You inspired me today Laura. I got up at 6:30 or so. Watched your show, then made muffins with what I had on hand. Benjamin inspired me too!!🙌🌟💪😊. He is such a good young man! Hugs Benjamin🤗
I live in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan - here we obviously call service berries Saskatoon berries :) so good in pies, jams and served with cake and ice cream
Laura saved the day when cute Benjamin cracked the second egg and it almost did't land in the bowl, AND, cooking in a pristine white t-shirt. Just adorable boy. Love from sunny Sydney, Australia.

I agree! I was amazed at his knife skills 🤣

We just got 2 of them and so excited to harvest a few soon. Omg your son is adorable!! Baking with the kids is so fun
Hi 👋 momma from scratch, saw your comment on garden answer
So funny, when you were planting your planters recently, I thought ‘I wondered if you know about Laura 😊’
This video brought a tear to my eye, remembering baking with my mom as a little kid. She is no longer here but the memories live forever. Thank you for sharing yours with all of us. ❤️
Same here... Mine was with my Polish grandma.
Benjamin’s face while cutting the apple, priceless!! So fun, this video has my heart!!

It's so fun to see Benjamin's personality developing. Thank you for sharing this wonderful experience.

Good morning, Laura ☕️ What a heartwarming video. Sweet Benjamin just melts my heart ❤️. He is such a love. Have a Blessed Day 😊🐈
I just love the patience you have with your son!

I just planted a multi-trunk serviceberry! Your info is so timely and appreciated. Looking forward to years of enjoying this wonderful tree.
Benjamin is so sweet and funny and adorable I can't take it. What a little personality!!
Benjamin is so cute he what all of the berry's plus helping mom cook muffins
Love watching you having fun with Benjamin. He is getting so big. He seems like he is a really funny kid!
This was a fun & educational video - I was hoping you’d take us back into your kitchen for some cooking!
I bought 2 service berry bushes a few years ago and have been fighting suckers ever since! BUT, the pleasure I get from watching the Cedar Wax wings and taking lots of pictures has been worth it. You have quite the little helper Laura! Such a smart little guy! Love watching him help you.
I love to see Benjamin's expressions!😍Those muffins look yummy.😋
How are you doing today my name is Eric Moore and how is the weather over there
I love all your videos but this one with Benjamin and you baking is the BEST. ❤️ He’s precious.

How are you doing today my name is Eric Moore and how is the weather over there
🤣I totally agree I planted 10 serviceberries, 8 bush cherries, 6 blackberries, berried treasure strawberries, and a few boysenberry this spring.

Am i the only one who said "Good Job Buddy" like Laura does, after he finally cuts the apple. Love how he's so helpful.
Absolutely precious watching Benjamin cook with his mommy!

Benjamin is so cute and what a great helper. Your such a good patience Mother.
As you were describing them I thought, they sound a lot like Saskatoon berries. Then you mentioned they were called that. Yes, Saskatoon berries are great, to me they have an almond taste to them. Come visit Calgary, Alberta we have a farm named after them.
Saskatoon berry picking wild berries is so fun! Also Saskatoon berry pie is the best!!!! Lethbridge AB here.
I was impressed when she said Saskatoon berries since that is what I call them in Toronto. Mine are just ripening now too. They are delicious.
We always make a trip there every summer! I remember foraging for them and making tarts as a kid:
We had Saskatoon berries growing wild in northern Alberta which I think is a zone 2 or 3. Used to go Saskatoon berry picking all the time. Saskatoon pies are the best!
Saskatoon is a city in Saskatchewan, Canada. We have lots of Saskatoon bushes in Canada. Not sure if they are the same as a service berry though.
Sweet this is the sweetest video. Love to see little Benjamin helping you bake. Making memories.❤️
Oh your son is too cute and sweet. 🥰he’s really good in the kitchen too!!
Loved this video! Little bit of garden information and baking by Laura and Benjamin just priceless!
Laura started off saying service berries are underrated. Then she showed us this glorious recipe and told us to grow one ourselves. Now growers won’t be able to keep up with demand.
So true!😆😂😩

Baking with Benjamin........I love it!!! yes, make it a regular. ❤️ or I can imagine him now planning family dinner...what a sweet little guy.
Dang!! That’s horrible!! Some people are just not responsible with that spray!! I’d say the farmer owes you a new bush!🤨
@@tamararobinson2069 I don't think the young farmers realize what spray can do to plants and humans. I know a lot of famers that have died from cancer due to these herbicides.
Oh my goodness Benjamin is just so adorable! He has grown so much! ❤
Good Night from the land of Australia. Never heard of these, they look delicious though.

I love how Benjamin just took the entire basket of berries and was like "Mine" ❤🤗🤭

Love all this, Benjamin is such a Sweet baker helper. I do not have grandchildren so it such a pleasure to see your babies. I totally look forward to them and enjoy it so much! Loved learning learning about the Service berry Tree too.:-)
Benjamin's expressions are so precious. He looked so serious and worried when you handed him the egg in the chicken coop.☺️
The muffins look yummy and I hope to give the recipe a try!

I live in Iowa now but I’m from Northern Ontario. I miss Saskatoons so much! I want to get some to plant in my yard. My mom always made Saskatoon Pie
Hey ! I am on the east coast of Canada. We have had really good luck growing them in pots for 4 years now.
I hope see can answer you because that is a great idea for your daughter. I’d say give it a try🤗 make it a big pot💚
Good morning everyone! Never knew about serviceberries. Thanks for sharing!
~Margie
