Headlights are MEANT for your MOSQUITO!! "WILL they be recessed with a glass cover?" I feel so lucky to witness your and your father's build!! And DAMN IT!!! "I got choked up when you spoke of building together.... you're a LUCKY FELLA Oliver Pickard thank you for always taking the time to share!!!
Oh thank you so much. They will be covered yes
Never have I seen a content creator that is as passionate as you two are about this car. It is truly inspiring. Keep it up, I cannot wait to see where the project goes in the future.
Back when 7” round headlights with plug-in bulbs were standard fitment on most cars, Cibie made retrofit halogen headlight kit- their own reflector/lenses and halogen bulbs. The difference in reach, and especially the beam pattern control, was phenomenal. I got my set on sale for $70 in 1977, and took them with me on several cars until square headlamps took over. Forty-odd years and many vehicles later, I still haven’t had headlights that were better.
Maybe lights should be round
I was waiting for this video where your team provides an up-to-date progress video format. This is the perfect video to send to people when they ask me about one of the best car-building channels where you can learn and see excellent work, along with explanations of each decision. Great work!
Thank you so much
Every time I watch the intro, it reminds me of the shifter build. Highly recommend that episode to anyone who hasn't watched it.
I love how you havr a clear vision for the car and are relentlessly sticking to it. Those lights are amazing!
@@akumabito2008 It has to look like it's always been that way 👍🏼
Our panel gaps are a little bit...Tesla. That's hystlterical.
Stratos had fiat 850 rear lights . As did the GT 40 as far as I knew .
Look awesome in one color and one pile. Can't wait to see body mods.
Great work guys, much appreciated.
Wait! You forgot to mention the most important bit you found for the car! The Fiat Panda heater!
This details in this project are overwhelming
What a fantastic video. The introduction of the various ingredients was such a clever way of putting the video together. A great steering wheel and the choice of lights is inspiring, especially the headlights! Well done to you both.
Thank you 😊
The arches are going to need to he massive - how are you gping to blend them in?
I get all excited about finding NOS era correct parts for 50’s and 60’s guitar amplifiers. I totally get it.
Being impossible to replace, I’d be deathly afraid of driving the completed car around other people. Any plans on using reproduction lights for road driving/track use?
The headlights will be covered dont worry
Definitely a good looking headlamp. Here in the UK it is illegal to fit LED bulbs to headlamps that weren't specifically designed for LED bulbs. No upgrades allowed here. Hopefully that isn't the case in the EU.
It's OK if it's a pre-1986 car. Hopefully the Mosquito has enough of its original identity.
@@ianbird4737 Even halogens will provide plenty of light
It’s so inspiring to watch and listen to you articulate the decisions and processes. I have the training and skills to perform most of what you do as far as, if someone said “make this, join this here etc” . However I would have absolutely no idea as far as the design decisions, and attention to detail as far as components etc. I remember in a recent episode you talking about making mistakes. I am actually surprised at the lack of them.
When a car becomes art…
We've had problems with welders and needed to move the spring perches but working out how we are going to do something and how that will effect everything else is often the lions share of the work.
When you took those tail lights out of the box, my first thought was "He's going with Bova coach rear lights?". When you showed them a bit closer I realised they weren't the Bova lights, but they're a pretty similar layout on the lens.
I vaguely remember the Bova ones got used on some factory sports car back in the day, though for some reason I can't remember which............ I just remember that the lights were originally fitted to a coach.
McLaren F1
Fantastic. Love the headlights and the explanation and reasoning
Thanks this was a fun one.
Certainly been a well thought out build .has been worth watching . Nice clean workshop guys . Unlike mine at the moment
Love the plan to fair in the headlights and fog lights, that'll look absolutely fantastic.
And give better fuel economy 😉
Beautiful lights, BTW I always liked the rear view of the TVR Tuscan Racer
Having followed your journey from the beginning, my imagination has always run ahead of the build. This episode has massively caught up with my daydreams. The steering wheel is fabulous, (I imagined a period Moto Lita flat 13" alloy/leather wheel as on a 1974 Mini I owned back then, but that Raid is even better) When you brought out the Cibies I could hardly believe it. Again that Mini had Cibie Biodes and they turned night into day. This project is really showing now your dedication and commitment to detail, truly magnificent. Thank you.
Awesome guys - chassis, gubbins, interior, body and LIGHTS! Simply superb.
The lamps look spot on.
At first I didn't like the headlights BUT as soon as you placed it on the car, PERFECT! Looks so cute and happy ♥
It’s a different vibe to this weeks episode but it certainly provides a good overview of the project, especially for folks who’ve just found the channel.
Great choice in regards to the lighting, it certainly is your style. And they really do give the Mosquito a sense of character.
Love this project
I have those exact Marchal fog lights, “brand new” 1986. Got them for my 2CV but no room on my bumper. Those headlights are amazing, kudos for snapping them up.
Thank you
It really looks sexy without clothes. Really looking forward to seeing the shell taking shape as well.
I really enjoyed this episode even if it did not include any real new fabrication. Nice to get a bit of perspective on the whole project once in a while.
100% yeah I think this one was for us as much as it was for you haha
A great overview of the thoughts behind the design. The lights should be great. Qoute of the video: "Our body gaps are a little bit Tesla". I'm waiting with baited breath for the body work.
@@lawrence5117 *bated

The car is looking fabulous and I can't wait to see what's in store for the wheel arches. If I were approaching this, I'd try to conjure up a shape that could be applied to all four corners with good aero properties. This way you could create one mold to adapt to each flare location and easily make spares if needed. Lovely to see the car in such a complete mock-up.
that's far too sensible haha
Great pick on the lights.
Looking great so far gents, nice to see it coming together
Listen guys, I gotta tell ya, the car is absolutely amazing stunning and all of the above, but those lights are KILLER, sexy stunning those lights, like dad said, nailed it 😊
Superb. it's just sex on wheels isn't it. I, am so happy for you both
Patiently waiting to see this drive 🚗
Rear lights are perfect. So glad you went with round.
Oh good you're going to protect the lights. I was a little worried when you were talking about the rarity. I was thinking "well if you break one how you replacing it" yea the solution is to not break em :D.
And as builds go I'm bad at seeing the end car. But now I can finally see how she's coming together. It's gonna be sooo good.
Even if at the end it doesn't drive well you cannot put a price on the Memory's you have achieved with your Dad as there priceless and so important I lost my father when I was under 30 never got chance to build projects enjoy every moment of your time together ❤️
I'm sorry for your loss.
I’m looking at it and I know it’s wrong but I’m seeing Group B style flaired arches. Or the straight arches that Gerry Marshall’s Big Bertha had. Looking gorgeous though, beautifully engineered.
Im ready to see how yall tackle the fenders!
Such an interesting project, hope to see it driving on my local roads someday !
Regarding the brakes, since you're on a MX5 base, you have the option to reduce weight further down if current size is sufficient would be Flyin' Miata's Little Big Brake kit. It uses small Powerlite Wilwood calipers.
Also, please do ITBs !
@@gt4lex From what I saw the wildwood kit is the same weight but better cooling
ITBs would be awesome but we do have an RBC intake on there already which is the go to but we'll see
@@OliverPickard You're probably thinking aboyt Dynalite based kits, not Powerlite. Flyin' Miata's front kit saves 8 lbs, so about 4kg. 4 wheel kit, depends how you option the rears, they have different options for parking brake, lighter option saves an extra 3kg.
@@gt4lex cool thanks
You showed the headlights out of the box and I was more "meh... Really?" And then you put the money against the car and... Yup. It works. You don't really need the busy fog lights right below it. Personally I like the fog lights in the middle of that big smile and the turn signal separate but the headlights are an excellent choice and based off of that. Run with it.
The tail lights are very cool but I would love to see the Amber triangles on the outer edges of each side, which also puts the license plate light straight down. To me that's what looks best and "correct" but every time you've done something that I wasn't sure on it still came out great so your judgment overrides mine for sure.
Thank you so much. That big smile has lots to do and mounting the fog lights out board allow me to spot the edge of the road while in a corner.
Great episode again guys! I know you won’t be driving with the fog lights on that much but it might be worth moving the indicators a bit further away from them as it would be a shame if the indicator was lost in the light beam of the fog light. There’s a Peugeot on sale at the moment that has invisible front indicators when the headlights are on. Iv nearly hit a couple on a local roundabout.
Also do rear brakes on a mid engined car need to be bigger or have more bias than on a front wheel drive car to help slow the rotating mass of the driveshafts and gearbox? You might have to also slow the engine if you stop faster than the engine braking slows the engine too. Might not be a problem but I just thought more rotating mass might need more braking force.
Cheers chaps. Viva la mosquito!!
@@mopedmarathon @mopedmarathon
The front and rear discs are almost identical in diameter so there's plenty of leverage and if anything I'm concerned about being over braked all round. Brake bias is different yes but that's to do with the master cylinder size and we'll talk about that next video
Amazing content as usual. You’re now a part of my Saturday routine.
When it’s done put a Pickard badge on the front!
Hmmm ill have to have a think about that
@@OliverPickard happy to help design it if you do it as a way to give back for the amazing content you and your dad are creating
@@NardoMini that's very kind but ive got this 👍
Someone needs to make you a carbon body for it!! This is easily one of my favorite channels on UA-cam.
I can make a carbon body but is that taking the easy way out
@@OliverPickard think of the lightness you would be adding!!
The choice of lighting is epic. The whole project is giving me an old school Type 2 WRC vibe.
@@thomperkins carbon is stiffer for the same weight so it's only lighter if you can make it thinner or use less of it
@@OliverPickard gotcha. With the chassis you’ve built, the stiffness gain isn’t needed so there’s no reason for the conversion. Plus, the current body is original and can be modified much easier. Makes complete sense. But, it would be supremely cool.
23:50 omg this car is soooo cutee 0_0 🥰🥰
The period light are killer
Personally I'd like the car would look good painted in a pearl white with the appropriate period correct racing stripes and markings etc
First time seeing this thought it was called mosquito because you would have used a rotary lol
Because it's extremely small and rather rapid
@@OliverPickard that and the engine has that kind of sound
After all the high end craftsmanship that we've seen I'm curious to know what plans you have for the final "engine dressing".. will you keep the classic type R red cam cover? Will there be fancy polished bits? Etc etc
Ps, Proper exciting to see it getting reassembled again 😁
The red is definitely going
Build is looking good. Still not a fan of that foot wear action :) This channel deserves more subscribers. Keep killing it with your pops.
It's really coming together 🎉
It did need bigger headlight because the proportions have changed and I get you want to do it right but I would be too scared to bump it when it's a unknown quality but good on you both
I know you have the whole design worked out.
So I'm wondering if the rear end might end up looking something like the daytona (shelby not ferrari) with a fastback glass to see the engine and be more "fish" like in an aero way.
Anyway I can't wait to see what you do since you put the roll hoop through the original rear window location I guess something is happening out the back.
You are on the right track kind of although cobra Daytona is about 5 years too early
Magnifique voiture et bravo à tous les deux 😊
STUNNING
Thank you
I figured Bi Iode from the thumbnail pic 😅. I didn't know the tail lights. Look great!
Haha you're too good at this
Great build! May I ask what the chassie dimensions have?
@@tho4747 wheelbase is 2180mm, roof height should be 1066mm but it's a bit high at the moment
@@OliverPickard Thank you. Do you have the width to? Just pondering wether I can use some of your exelent work as a basement for my own project. The stearing and rear end on my car is busted.
The headlights look great. I'm not sure how the lack of wheel arches distorts how they look. But at the moment I dig that combination of lights and indicators.
As for colour... Please please please don't go white/grey/black. The great swifty that the car companies have pulled telling us that those cars have better resale value (they don't) means that less and less cars have cool colours. I personally would love to see it in British Racing Green or a classic Mini Red (the brighter ones). Maybe with a white racing stripe.
@@SuperDrakmar I can promise you two things, I don't care about resale value because it's not for sale and we're definitely not painting it red because it's not Italian haha
@@OliverPickard I suppose I'm more bemoaning the fact that driving around the general colour pallette we see on the road is becoming predominantly white/ grey/ black.
@@SuperDrakmar I've never been one for blending in don't worry 😉
Hi Oliver, nice to see the car coming together after painting. As a follower of your build, I have a similar concept car, a Lancia Beta Montecarlo, I was particularily interested in your braking system. I want to ask you to reconsider the basics. Perhaps you've done so, but I would like to offer my help with the design of the brakes. It;s a common mistake to place standard braking systems of front driven cars to rear driven cars. The brake bias is likely to be wrong as thes front dirven cars have a bias of 65 of more % tot the front. As I saw your rear calipers, I'm wondering if you are about to make the same mistake. Bias should be more to the back. If you're interested I can provide you with a calculation sheet in which you can exactly calculate the braking needs!
@@everm1973 Don't worry the brake bias in Mosquito is controlled by the master cylinders not the calipers as you'll see next week when we fabricate our pedal box but the fronts are from a 1000kg car and the rears are from a 1200kg car
@@OliverPickard Top! I'll be following the progress!
well done
Yes I ❤️ this little car . Will you sell designs ? I mean to say 1200 people can’t be wrong . I appreciate the Philosophy . My project car Porsche 914 fully custom everything will come out hopefully about twice as heavy as this flyweight . Weight kill enjoyment not speed but like you and your dad I’m into fun. ❤🇦🇺👍ps, why the backward facing naca duct on rear quarters ?
No we won't sell designs as the intro says it's one of one. The ducts are the work of a previous owner, it had a metro turbo A series in it at one point
This thing is awesome!
You can edit this after your done, and create an "Obscure Automotive History" video... LOL
Yeah I do that a lot 😅
You say the lights will meet the regs for height and presumably distance from the rear arch extremity?which in Uk IVa is 400mm I think.
Looks fantastic
Such a wonderful episode guys fantastic
why do i have Devo's Space Junk in my head
alternative lyrics starting with cocque in place of junk maybe 🤔
Thanks!
Thank you so much
Nailing it !!!
11:24 as it looks right now it kinda looks like a dune buggy
The ride height is very high
If I could value my parts collection at eBay max prices, I'd be retired
rear lights look like cheap trailer lights , specialy now in the square holes ,
That's 100% not the name of the steering wheel. The number you read is the the german homoligation number for street cars.
KBA Kraftfahrt Bundes Amt and a looong Number has to be on every part used in Germany.
Well that's a new one to me thank you. it still works as the easiest way to google it hahaha

What are those tyres? They look like 215/50/15s on an 8 inch rim
Its smaller than it looks. Toyo cf2 185/55 14x8 I wanted 205/60 for the rear but they weren't in stock during the pandemic
I don't like to pick nits, but those cup holders are a fail. You have the right amount for a person in the US but at ninety degrees off...Ah well, most 'mericans wouldn't be able to fit in there anyway.
If I fit anyone will, the irony is I hate cupholders haha
sooo funny lol
Fantastic!
11:38 that right There would make a bad sss car
Ngl I was kinda cringing that you left those DAMN expensive headlights in a lose & floppy fiberglass bonnet no mounts or anything i kept having to look away plz don't do that again my fragile heart can't take it XD
personally I don't think round headlights will work on the rear without some major body sculpting/modifications to the entire car, basically super car designs from the 70's are a combination of roundness & edge in complete balance very curvy cars like the Maserati Bora, Lotus Esprit & a couple others had square rear lights on a flat panel to basically contrast the softness of the rest of the car making the rear really pop out giving them there distinctive looks, the cars you mentioned were very angled cars so the contrast was the round rear with the round lights.
not to mention if you put them on it'll no longer looks like the original car which IMO is counter intuitive to the goal of this project which is being the best damn mosquito to ever exist if it no longer looks like the original car then is there much point in it.
One thing i'm kinda looking forward to is the interior design
@@DatBoiOrly Only later GTMs had the rectangular boxes 😉
Great progress ! I haven't seen your channel since starting with a body i think ? Anyways I'm amazed with craftsmanship

Thank you!
Watched this a second time, and I'm compelled to ask: Why go for LED lights on a car that is so rooted in the 70's? I feel like a one man crusade when it comes to LED's on cars of any era. Brake lights and indicators. I feel my brainwaves jump every time they go on and off. Absolutely loath the colour changing sidelights that double as indicators but perhaps that's a beef for another day. Have people seen those funny videos of cats that jump every time a printer feeds the paper forward a few millimetres? That's how my brain feels when I see LED's going on and off. I'd love to know other people's thoughts on this one, maybe I'm just weird. (Well I AM weird but I can't be the only one? 😂)
Its a very small car with a roof line that runs lower than the wing mirrors on most cars so if I tap the brakes I need everyone behind me to know. Led, halogen the best bulbs for the best places but I'm not a fan of cold white lights for headlights or sequential LEDs either

Oliver,
Remove the rubber damper on the left half shaft. Moisture collects between the metal sleeve of the damper, which is aluminum, and the half shaft. I don't know if it's a galvanic effect because of the differing metals, but it rusts the surface of the shaft. I had that shaft break at that point on my RSX due to the rust penetrating the hardened surface of the half shaft.
@@mlsatke wow thanks I'd never heard of that problem before
@@OliverPickard As an ex yachtie I would think you have used the galvanic pastes used for fitting stainless fittings to aluminium masts?
@@delukxy I haven't touched the shafts yet, they need new boots too but I'll have a good look when I get around to them
@@OliverPickard It took twenty years for it to happen, but it never happens close to home or at a convenient time. The rubber is molded on to an aluminum sleeve that's pressed on to the shaft. Replacement shafts don't have the damper on them.
Hi. I'm not trying to be critical, but I don't believe the the name Mosquito is really a good name for the car. Mosquitos are annoying little animals, that most people work diligently to kill on sight. I liked the original name, and I understand why you changed it, but it fit the car far better because the only thing that you really used from the old car, was hope. Good on you to save the car!!!
@@jimalexander9230 picking names is extremely difficult and I'm a fan of the air craft which shares its name. Small, light, blisteringly fast and no one thought it would work
@@OliverPickard Hi Oliver. I understood that you had your own logic in the name choice, but mosquitos are such annoying little pests, that any positive association with that name just doesn't feel quite right. Great little car though. I have a late 50s Dauphene, and I am considering the same powertrain. The Renault will be quite a bit heavier than Mosquito, so if I do it, I may have to add a little turbo.
@@jimalexander9230 Be aware that turbo adds a LOT of heat management and weight, for prospective many rotary engines weigh more than v8s once you take into account all the things that keep them alive and adding weight to combat added weight creates a downward trend in performance but far the best turbo k I've seen is Bisi Motos wagovan
@@OliverPickard the heat can be an issue, but the ability to double the hp, and only add a hundred pounds of weight is very appealing. I don't really have many good driving roads near me, and the ones that are close, are always busy. That project is at least a couple of years away, so it might not even get started.
That is what you paid . It is not what they are worth
its not what I paid 😉
