2 years late I know. But that is actually a point I use when some of my friends were complaining about Kenobi. That he was hitting troopers with his lightsaber like a bat and not a sword and that’s exactly what I would bring up. That lightsabers have been being used as baseball bats since the OT. There’s plenty of things for you guys to critique I’m sure but maybe pick something else? The OT did the same thing so don’t put it on a pedestal and vaunt it as something perfect and romanticized
The in universe lore reason for sound 3 is using a synthetic kyber crystal, although in the prequels, Clone Wars and sequels after the Original trilogy kinda messed this up in the sound design lol. Great video though
I believe synthetic crystals are now considered Legends. In the recent Vader comics its said that to turn a cyber Krystal from the regular blue and green to red, you have to force all of your negative emotions and energy onto the crystal. Because the crystal color adapts to the user, forcing negative emotion onto it causes it to "bleed" or turn red.
@@amarionm5675 Out of all of Disney's bad decisions, I'm actually glad they got rid of the synthetic Sith crystals. The new story puts something fresh and shines a different light on the Sith and how they think.

I actually hoped he would cover that, since Dooku's lightsaber ignition sound against his brief fight against Ventress always stuck with me, that low pitched loud noise. I think Pong Krell's ignition is pretty close to it.
Ah that makes some sence. It is similar to sound 2 as he numbered them. It's just a fat version of 2. Say which do you think is the most real? Like if lightsabers actually were a real thing which of these all actually makes sence as what they would really do? Or if someone wanted to have a go at making a realisticish Star Wars. Meaning going as Mell Gibson as you could with Star wars.
Ah yeah that's right. I remember that vid. I also watched the because science vid on death by lightsaber. It would blow you away essentually. Not what I thought. I thought if someone did do a Passion of the Christ bloody and gory style Star Wars what you'd see is I guess basicaly frying meet go flying. Or frying blood or something. You know what made me wander actually? Remember when Dooku zaps Obi's legg apart? Next time you watch the film or heck just put the DVD on and go to chapter 45 and pay attention this time. After Obi screams and falls over listen to that sizzling sound like his legg is now on fire or something. So I started wandering. Then I also thought of when Maul pulls his saber back out of Qui-Gon. I wandered hmmmm shouldn't it be like in rated R films where a bunch of meet blood and what not comes with the rod? But in this case frying stuff. Meh I guess the 12 year old me kept forgetting that weather or not a saber was just light or if it was a rod that heets up it wasn't a nife. Or a Flagrem since I brought up the Passion.
Right so there would be nothing to gane from an R rated Mell Gibson style Star Wars. Cause see I had emagened if you did it Passion of the Christ style you'd see the meet fry inside the guy or instead of just that sizzeling sound and what ever you do see when Obi falls over after Dookuu zaps his legg again you'd see the split of the legg meet frying steam going every ware or something like that. I don't know. But meh I just thought when the whole idea of an R rated Star Wars came uphmmmm I wander what Star Wars as bloody and gory and meaty as The Passion of the Christ would be like.
HOLY CRAP- I thought I was the only one who took this kind of thing to heart! I can tell who's lightsaber is being ignited in the original trilogy, so I really confused my family when we watched Force Awakens because the Skywalker lightsaber HAD THE WRONG SOUND! They thought I was nuts, but I know this kind of stuff! I saw that Ben Burtt was the sound designer on TFA & was shocked that he let this slip by!
5:56, I hadn’t even known about “sound 3” being the result of an edit, but too found the other inconsistent lightsaber sounds strange. Luke’s ignition sound here I don’t mind as much because it sound kind of like how Luke is feeling right now....bold and intense....only for Vader’s blade to reply with that cold and sinister hissing sound......a reflection of Vader in this moment. Luke is the heroic knight......Vader is the dragon.
kylos lightsaber does not make the classic lightsaber noises, but thats because the crystal is cracked and corrupted, and you gotta admit that it sounds and looks dope
Filmmakers somehow don't realize that we rewatch movies a lot and become very familiar with the sound effects. The walker blasts used in antman were so distracting
Got this idea from another person here in the comments, but A cool thing they should make secretly canon is that the sound is based on the mood of the wielder. They are connected to the force after all, and it makes sense that their sound, and speed of ignition will reflect the force energy of its wielder, hence why most dark side people make sound 2. Fin made sound 2 because he's not force sensitive, so maybe it just makes the sound that the blade itself feels like at the time.
17:50 That's definitely Lightsaber Sound #2 under there, but it's different than other Sound 2's. It's so much more bassy and doesn't emphasize the hiss as much. I kinda like it!
At 18:13 I think the reason for the diffrent sound is that the hilt of the lightsaber was covered in snow, even the "opening". The snow evaporated on Ingition. (You can see it a little bit at 18:10)
Great video! I've always been a little disappointed that the lightsabers lacked a real variety in their ignition sounds since they were all supposed to be unique to the Jedi or Sith. If they're all going off and building their own from scratch, wouldn't it make sense for each one to sound a little different? I think you might have nailed it with the sounds reflecting the user and their emotions whenever the lightsaber is turned on, it seems like something the sound guys would have done to add a small touch to the movies. Keep up the good work!!
I think it’s actually kind of interesting that the first time we hear Dooku ignite his lightsaber it’s sound 3 instead of the traditional Sith ignition, because him turning to the dark side always seemed like a means to an end for him rather than embracing it to the full extent. He rarely ever has Sith eyes as well.
fun fact: during the order 66 council room scene Hayden Christensen said boo which made the kid Jedi flinch, yes the boy got spooked for a second. fun little tidbit to think about.
I like the idea of the lightsaber sound reflecting the character’s emotional state (crystal related for you lore nerds) hence when Luke ignites his green saber to attack Vader in anger it gets a specific sound to highlight that
I think that Yoda’s lightsaber ignition sounds unique and my personal favorite because it seems to buzz instead of hum or purr

Very nice. Star Wars is popular for all the reasons you mentioned in the beginning, plus the sfx. I do find it hilarious that Disney even dropped the ball, for the most part, in the audio department on these films--they don't even *sound* like Star Wars lol. As a professional audio engineer, many of those things took me out of the movies as well.
After watching your three videos I feel a bit melancholy. I'm super sad about how much good content is not seen or heard from anyone out there at the end of the day, or doesn't get the attention it deserves. I'm glad the UA-cam algorithm suggested me your Pokemon video on the home page. As a result, there are now a lot of people out there who are appreciative of what you're doing. Never felt more on the same page with someone when it comes to the new Pokemon games and how they lost there charm and nostalgic feeling to the older ones, but I couldn't have summed it up better myself. I hope there are a lot more Videos coming up. I wish I could talk more about this. Please keep it up! This made my day. Greetings from Germany
I like to think that sound 2 is used when a dark side user ignites his lightsaber. Like it goes in tune with his rage. Which is why general grevious lightsabers use sound nr2
Well I believe it’s because the force is tied to the emotion of the user and the kyber crystal is connected to the force as well so it makes sense that the sound will change with the emotions
Hear me out, I really like sound 4. I love how sudden it is, and I like its association with Rey- personally I think her yellow saber should have had that sound fo further set her apart as a pretty unique character.
I always felt that sound 3 was an aggressive feel. I wish anakin used it when he turned to the dark side which would have been much cooler but I also like that they gave him sound number two when he turned
One thing I thought you’d discuss in the wonderful video; what was the genesis of the OG sound of the light saber was. When I went to school at USC Cinema in 1977-79, it became known that Ben Burtt captured the sound of the 16mm sync sound projector in the screening room for the students. The projectors had 1/4” audio reel to reel decks which would sync to the 16mm film projector. There was a motor that locked the two devices together to show the film with sound. That motor made a unique sound as it locked them together. Ben came back and recorded them. He liked the sound and eventually played it backwards which became lightsaber sound #1. 1977 technology and all. I got my BA in Cinema TV Production in 79. I have one entry in the IMDB, LOL. Then went on to become an IT guy. Oh, I saw an early Star Wars script where Luke’s name was Starkiller and the title was The Adventures of Luke Starkiller; As Told in the Journal of the Whils: Episode One: Star Wars. (Episode ONE, money made the numbers change)
Interesting note: in Battlefront 2 the lightsaber sounds keep a bit of consistency with either their original users or alignment; Anakin's saber uses sound 1 and, since both use the same blade that was passed on, Luke as well; all the Sith use sound 2 (personally I'd like to believe the synthetic saber crystals that makes all the blades red also gives them all the same sounds), sound 3 stays with Luke's green one only, and sound 4 stays on Rey's gold saber. It gets a bit blurred after that aside from Kylo's at times, which is a mix of sound 2 and his unique one, but Obi Wan and Yoda seem to either be a blend of sound 1 and 2 or some new one for them that each have. Regardless, the Sith keep sound 2 and the Jedi either keep a generic Jedi sound or use their original sounds.
This was really interesting, thanks for the video! ^^ I love wee details like this, it's super cool and just shows how much love went into the films! I think my favourite would probably be Sound 3! X3

@@BullGator-kd6ge Its not the lightsaber that’s synthetic man its the Kyber Crystal
@@amarionm5675 Thats what I meant to say but in the current canon, synthetic Kyber crystals aren't a thing.
@@BullGator-kd6ge We have disney and their terrible decision making to thank for that
@@amarionm5675 Out of all of Disney's bad decisions, I'm actually glad they got rid of the synthetic Sith crystals. The new story puts something fresh and shines a different light on the Sith and how they think.
Nice use of colors and numbers to better keep track of the sounds 👍
12:40 "the only star wars tv show that currently captured the spirit & the massive scale of the movies"
The Clone Wars 2003 would like a word with you >:o
I actually hoped he would cover that, since Dooku's lightsaber ignition sound against his brief fight against Ventress always stuck with me, that low pitched loud noise. I think Pong Krell's ignition is pretty close to it.
@@CodyHeldreth I was just about to comment that! it was such a smooth crisp sound.
I love how Luke's saber sounds like it's exploding from the hilt when it ignites. It just sounds fierce and awesome.
You forgot the sound that the Jedi Temple guard sabers make. My personal favorite
Bro when my eyes swooshed over the words "temple" and "guard" in your comment my brain made that sound 1:1
Thanx I love u
You pointed out things that even as a blind guy who pays a lot of attention to sound I never picked up while watching these movies, fantastic video!
Fun Fact: In legends, Luke's Saber sound in ROTJ is referred to as the sith's advocate sound as one is tempted to the dark side of the force
@@hamitcampos4989 ua-cam.com/video/xC6J4T_hUKg/v-deo.html
@@MrHamit64 a lightsaber cauterizes everything it touches immediately so that's why there's no blood or entrails. It literally burns stuff to a crisp
I like that sound #1 has been pitched differently as the movies have gone on, sounding more aggressive and stalwart, almost as much as sound #3
Glad it wasn't just me who heard a lightsaber sound at Tom Riddle's death.
The point that this guy can make a 23 minute vid about lightsaber sounds is amazing to me
Vader’s Ignition in the ESB Cloud City Duel is still the best sound effect ever created for film.
12:10 - "I have waited a long time for this moment, my little gween fwend."
Ooh fwend
this is a video star wars fans didn't ask for, but definitely needed
I've never even paid attention to the different sounds.
this is legitimately now one of my favorite videos ever
The sound it makes when Finn ignites it to fight Kylo is my favorite. Mainly because when you hear it, you know THIS IS A DEADLY WEAPON.
Luke's Green lightsaber sound is the best movie sound in movie history.
I've always loved the Star Wars 7 sound when Finn ignites it.
God I wish Finn had more to do in that trilogy..
@@kinghobothe4th837 the real tragedy
@@explicitw8657 yup. They botched it. spectacularly so.
He was the chosen one
it's SO good! so glad i'm not the only one that is a fan of the green saber ignition sound
The Wilhelm scream is my favorite sound effect of all time. I absolutely love it
kylos lightsaber does not make the classic lightsaber noises, but thats because the crystal is cracked and corrupted, and you gotta admit that it sounds and looks dope
Filmmakers somehow don't realize that we rewatch movies a lot and become very familiar with the sound effects. The walker blasts used in antman were so distracting
I feel like the sounds are not really tied to a specific sword or character. It's just what sounds best based on the music and tone of the scene.
Yeah that’s why in episode two attack of the clones Count Dooku first make sound three and then after that when he battles Yoda he makes sound 2
That’s obvious genius, but people are trying to come up with “in-movie” explanations
HEY....
YOUR PROBABLY RIGHT
I've literally noticed all of this in my head but never given it words. Thanks for the extremely not disappointing essay.
17:50 That's definitely Lightsaber Sound #2 under there, but it's different than other Sound 2's. It's so much more bassy and doesn't emphasize the hiss as much. I kinda like it!
Same can be said for rey at 18:21
Thank you for The Clone Wars shout out, people need to learn to respect it like how they respect the movies!
At 18:13 I think the reason for the diffrent sound is that the hilt of the lightsaber was covered in snow, even the "opening". The snow evaporated on Ingition.
(You can see it a little bit at 18:10)
One of the most interesting and enjoyable videos on UA-cam, Thank you! I like the Return of The Jedi Luke’s Green Lightsaber sound.
Finally another person that is looking for the consistensy of lightsaber ignition sounds, saying that out loud made me feel dumb
Let’s be honest here, we ALL have a fetish for lightsaber fighting.
But of course. Why not?
I like the idea of the lightsaber sound reflecting the character’s emotional state (crystal related for you lore nerds) hence when Luke ignites his green saber to attack Vader in anger it gets a specific sound to highlight that
Kind of wished they used the ashoka lightsaber sound a bit more, but I like them all
I love the algorithm. I would’ve never searched this up.
You had me rolling at 10:26
Dooku’s lightsaber in the 2003 Clone Wars series was awesome.
The high pitched sphew sound that likes green lightsaber makes is so nice and then the buzz being way more louder and sharper is legendary
My favorite ignition sound is actually the one we hear in Jedi: Fallen Order. So crisp.
From movies/series', it's Luke's ROTJ saber, aka sound 3
Nice research. Appreciate the time you put into this for something that ALL Star Wars fans love to hear
I think that Yoda’s lightsaber ignition sounds unique and my personal favorite because it seems to buzz instead of hum or purr
Great video, finally talking about this topic but for me number 2 is the best and most iconic cuz when I was a little dude and someone ignited a saber with number 2 I shat myself thus making it memorable
4:33 the ignition of the blade stacked on top of Mauls's roar is nut worthy🥜
a 23 minute video about not just starwars sounds but LIGHTSABER SOUNDS? ur dedicated my friend
him:Anakin lightsaber makes this sound. me:I got I got red I got blue what you want.
I just need to keep making more, hopefully the gods of the algorithm help me once again
15:39 You forgot to mention the Temple Guard Saberstaffs that have unique ignition and hum sounds to show up in TCW and Rebels
I like to think that sound 2 is used when a dark side user ignites his lightsaber. Like it goes in tune with his rage. Which is why general grevious lightsabers use sound nr2
Grievous doesn’t wield the force though
But Grevious is not Force-sensitive, dude. He's trained in the Jedi Arts, but he has no connection to the Force.
@@justsomeone1555 my bad
@@hampusnilsson9124 it's cool.
I really don’t have anything better to do than watching an over 20min Video of the Sound of something that doesn’t even exist
Well I believe it’s because the force is tied to the emotion of the user and the kyber crystal is connected to the force as well so it makes sense that the sound will change with the emotions
Lightsaber sound 2 has that sparkly sound at the end of the ignition And I really like it
Sounds literally made after the carrier’s current emotion (Rey’s just weird)
Editing and storytelling in this video is crazy good
9:33 The best lightsaber sound in my opinion
I agree
@@mp25monsterrtttffff my man
When I was younger I used to hate it lol but now it’s grown on me😂
Hear me out, I really like sound 4.
@Fairfax Thanks for the correction, didn't know bout that until now
This was really interesting, thanks for the video! ^^ I love wee details like this, it's super cool and just shows how much love went into the films!
I think my favourite would probably be Sound 3! X3
You do realise when maul ignited his crimson saber to fight pre vizla the saber makes the classic sith ignition sound, maul is the one roaring like a lion as the saber ignites
We see savage oppress doing the same thing when fighting embo
I love the music you used from the dark forces game! Such good memories!
Being born in '78, I've always been a massive fan of Luke's ROTJ Lightsaber. It's the best looking for sure.
But...Ahsoka's white sabers sound the best overall. Ignition, and overall hum/movement.
When I started watching the video I really did not think that I would've watched it till the end :)
But it's very Interesting!
My Personal favorite is sound 2!
I think it was right that Quigon Jin's green lightsaber used the "sound 1". It's a natural green crystal.
While Luke's green saber is a syntethic one like all dark side blade, so the different sound is can be explained by this.
Honestly even though I'm more of a prequels fan....Rey's lightsaber ignition noise (the yellow one) is sooooo satisfying.
