Klamath Water Basin drought impacting farmers, concerning Native American Tribes

- A severe drought in southern Oregon is leading to a crisis for many farmers in the Klamath Basin.
The basin stretches over 12,000 square miles in southern Oregon and northern California. It is home to farmlands that were marshes until the early 1900s.
The lake supplies irrigation water, which is controlled by the federal government's Bureau of Reclamation. But it’s also the source of water that endangered fish need to survive and Native American tribes need as well.
This year, the federal Bureau of Reclamation said there is not enough water and announced the farmers will get nothing in an effort to save the endangered fish, infuriating some.
“Pretty soon we’re gonna get this water flowin',” said farmer Dan Nielson as he stood by a chain-link fence near a main irrigation canal. “One way or another this water is gonna flow this year. We’re not gonna let the government steal our water."
He and another farmer bought a small plot of land right next to something called the "headgate," which controls the flow of irrigation water out of the lake.
Right now, it's closed and the canal the water would flow through is blocked with massive concrete slabs that would stop most of the water even if someone did open the headgate.
Local newspaper reporter Alex Schwartz said most farmers do not want the headgate forced open.
“The majority of farmers in the project don’t support the action that these folks at the headgate plan to take. They don’t support trespassing on government property or removing the headgates,” he said.
Schwartz works for the Herald and News out of Klamath Falls.
For the past year, he's covered the drought and irrigation water. He said many farmers see the threats to force the water to flow as a distraction.
“They believe it’s not going to actually help them this year. It’s not going to get them any additional water, cause a lot of crops have already been planted on the basis of somebody has well water or some districts are still able to divert some surface water from other places,” he said.
There is no question many farmers are being financially hurt by the lack of water.
It’s likely worse than the shortage of 2001, which saw tens of thousands arrive in the area to help with a bucket brigade. Protesters literally took buckets of water from the lake to pour into the irrigation canal. Eventually, some water did flow but it was a fraction of the normal amount and later in the summer.

Kind of ironic when you demand resources on stolen land. When it was in power of natives their was never ever this problem
Stop growing corn, bro. Stop growing massive amounts of everything.
@OMINOID All farms are using about 90% of all that water. There is no thought to making sure we have enough food. They are trying to grow bumper crops by any means necessary to make as much money as possible. The fact that most of the food is thrown out and rotting away means nothing to anyone. We don't need this much mass farming. We need education for people to grow their own stuff at home instead of a lawn.
@OMINOID I live in MAine in an agricultural zone. If I was not in so much pain right now I would have lots of stuff farming myself. I have big plans to cut down all the trees, set up bee hives, have raised beds for greens and veggies, build a chicken coop and get a cow to milk. Should be done in about 100 years at this pace.
@@whendoigettosayfuck still need water for that too.
Here you can see the main problem 2:38.
Have we all lost our minds! We live on a water planet. No way of removing some salt from the little pond around us all? We always seem to have money for things that line the politicians and elites pockets.
The real problem is we have settled in areas in the west that are desert or arid in nature and then we planted all kinds of crops in areas that didnt have enough water to support them. So, when you "reclaim" the desert it's not a big surprise that you may have water shortages.
Short termism at its finest .. What did they think ? some tech fix like fusion powered desalination plants ? crazy .
@@MyKharli Why not an underground river from the Great Lakes ?
@@freegedankenzurbaukunst5613 Probably a better use for a hyperloop though. Fill it with water :}
Tribal water rights supersede all other water rights in the Klamath River basin because of the simple principle of first in place, first in time.
The Native Americans should have the final say period!!! This is thier land and I approve this message😳
The farmers need to learn better farming techniques which would result in less water use.
The bureau of reclamation does a piss poor job and that's the sole purpose for their existence
This is a irresponsible statement farmers dont waste anything. Waste eqauls lost income. The problem with the bureau of reclamation it is no longer run by the same mindset of when the klamath project was done. It is now run by bearoucrats
Agree. We as a people, gun nuts and pronoun people, togeather, need to get off of synthetic fertilizers. The chemicals are depleting the land. Soil food web is the answer.
Leave it to the government to fuck everything up.
It’s about time they put the Indians needs in front of others for one of the first times!💯👍
Reduce all city water by 25% give it to the farmers to feed the people
Can you people in the city EAT your lawn and water fountains ?
We spent a lot of money helping build the Panama canal and many other projects around the world.
We are giving billions away right now.
If we invested in water transfer and storage we could build canals, pipelines and aquaducts to move water from the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers in times of flood to refill reservoirs and eventually creat huge inland freshwater lakes in the sub sea level areas of Mojave and Salton Sea.
That would act like a giant rain factory also taking the heat down and creating summer tropical storm rain instead of hot,dry Santa Ana winds and fires.
Water is more precious than gold or oil and we let it cause damage when there's too much and when there's not enough we say to pray it rains.
All the while fresh water flows into the sea.
We owned the Panama canal for 100 years and we more than made our money back. We built it as a strategy to become a world power... and it worked. You make it sound like charity. Like every other political body, the US acts in its own self interest. We also don't just "give away billions." Most of the money we spend on foreign aid primarily goes to US companies working overseas. The money is spent, again, in our best interest. We spend it to establish or preserve our influence in regions of significance, or to reduce the need to migrate to our borders, or to foster trade to benefit US companies, etc.
As for water... Some states already have implemented water strategies. Arizona, for instance, has a very robust water management and storage system. But no amount of water management is going to be enough to combat climate change.
@@RuthB51 I never said the canal was a bad thing, just how much difference in our country such spending would make.
Definitely not charity but an investment in navigation.
Imagine how much more fuel would be required if it wasn't built.
I am proud of American accomplishments and want more of it,right here at home.
We often have flooding and drought at the same time. We can do better.
@@jeffarcher400 I'm all for building up our infrastructure. Realistically, we're going to have to, aren't we?
But dealing with (and definitely solving) fresh water shortages is going to require more than that. It will require sacrifice and working together... things Americans only do in times of emergency. Until enough Americans realize the emergency we're in, we can just expect more gridlock while the problem gets worse.
@@RuthB51 fully agree. Water is bigger than politics, religion or even our food.
Earth is the water planet.
We are not focused on what's important.
Hopefully once we realize protecting earth, water and air actually maximizes profits everything will work out fine.
Thats actually smart as hell. Have you wrote to the president about this? You should could be saving alot of people and businesses
There is no reason to not operate desalination plants and pipeline water to distressed areas. There needs to be pipelines to pump fresh water from flooded parts of the country. If Rome could build aqueducts of from stones over two thousand years ago; the USA should come up with a solution now. Just get the bureaucrats out of the way!
The local tribe has the rights to that water, but some think it's OK to take whatever they want from the native tribes regardless of treaties and legal rights. It's always been like that with these people.
Indian tribes cause problems to society. Liberal to the core. Move them to the liberal cities so they can liberate.

Since your lacking in water this year why don't you start rebuilding the soil, so you wont have to use pesticides, and other chemicals on your land. And stop trying for that perfect shape ,taste, size product. Bugger what the consumer demands, just grow good healthy produce. Millions around the world used to eat all kinds of produce and never worried about the shape of a few, we just wanted healthy food. Try getting that, it will do us all good. You wont waste as much product, you can cut a lot of costs due to not using so many chemicals on your land , we will have much healthier food, in turn eating more of it. So cover your land in Carbon rich compost, cover that with mulch to keep moisture in, and leave it a while. Learn to save water..

People and farms should not be in any desert area. There are too many people, and farms that grow crops that require a lot of water. So fewer people, and change of crops is in order. But it will never happen.

Seems like everyone is asleep. We need farms, immediately they need to made more efficient do get water directly to plants with minimal peripheral wetting and evaporation. Law makers need to be prepared to take water from Crater lake if needed. It's 2000' deep and should be able to service water demands in the interim. Same with Lake Tahoe, for drinking water and efficient farms only. Sewage treatment plants upgraded to produce clear safe usable water for local farming. It seems like government are like deer in the headlights. Too afraid to do anything so they don't upset selfish groups. Local governments should perhaps not be involved in decision making due to the problem are many in bed with big business and other groups and will be afraid to make the tough decisions. Temporary proxies or even the military engineers should be involved with this as they can also provide security. Our society is nothing like it was decades ago. The get ur done attitude has waned significantly. Great leaders or of a bygone era.

I am so tired of the stupidity in this country, where is a unlimited supply of water, maybe the 70% of the earths surface. Start building desalination plants, is expensive yes, but research better ways to desalination cheaper. What is the option, loose the entire west cost to drought. .?
something will need to be done... alot of these farms use flood irrigation as well which is the worst way possible to irrigate. I few million dollars to get the irrigation process updated first will be a step in the right direction. After that, then new sources of water.
We should probably figure this out before we just can't farm anything anymore.
Turn the water back on. Most of the hippies on this thread have newer plowed an acre and yet feel confident giving advice. How would you people feel if the farmers started organizing your towns ? ... Right! ... so stay out of their farms, to each - his own.
