Farmers in California face severe water shortages

- Two thirds of the fruit that Americans consume and 80 percent of almonds eaten around the world are grown in the #US state of #California. But the area is seeing increasingly dry seasons. Many farmers are now being forced to fell almond, peach and apricot due to drought, but the problem is at least partially manmade. Intensive cultivation is prompting farmers to dig deeper and deeper wells, soaking up more and more moisture from the already parched soil. Our France 2 colleagues report, with FRANCE 24's Olivia Bizot and Valérie Dekimpe.

Not just California. Arizona farmers are expected to see their water supply reduced.
There's always been a water shortage in the desert. The water they been stealing from other states is running short. What did they expect.
What states do the farmers and ranchers of the San Joaquin Valley steal water from?
@@cecilhillerman6849 Granted. They are not "stealing from other states". Instead, they are taking it from underground. Causing massive subsidence issues.
@@cecilhillerman6849 Washington. They pay for it, but they still take it .
Man-made tragedy in slow motion
Large scale agriculture has never been sustainable in the desert. We are starting to see the beginning of the end.
Too many ticks on the moose.
Bingo !
Many of the crops that farmers choose to grow in the desert are water intensive crops like almonds.
And alfalfa.
How stupid.....
It's past time that California start building desalination plants. They do in other countries.
The rise and fall of ignorance.
Do deserts normally have a lot of water?
"there are no limits to the amount of wells the farmers can build or amount of water they can pump" well here is one big problem
Well what the problem dummy
If you run out of ground water then no wells . But so many poeple in the cities and suburbs want to shut the farmers and ranchers water down . They really don't know where there food comes from .
America is so weird. Why would the entire nation buy vegetables from California? They have enough water, sunshine and soil in other parts of US too.
Weather…no hail, tornadoes, short seasons etc in most other states.
Ca can grow year round rotating crops.
We grow vegetables in the East not a big deal we get so much rain here so it'll even out
Fix it people I need to water my 2 acre desert lawn continuously!
Welcome to the long term reality for the American southwest.
For the planet actually. Drought floods fires crop failures. Capitalism at its finest.
Eye opener for all of us if we exploit nature too much next gen will have to suffer consequences.
What about mass forest fires? Might that have something to do with it?
in india we are being ignorant , we will going to hit hard because of our blind and greedy factory like coca cola and nestle

Summer is here again with the restriction of movement and recess to be enjoyed by most workers. It's an opportunity to utilize and redirect this funds into life changing investments as to secure financial sustainability!!!!
I have secured financial freedom myself investing in bonds, equities, EFT's and some digital currencies
I'm diversifying myself and recently I added Crypto to my portfolio because of the recent dip in price. I'd say "think like a bear and invest like a bull
It's surprising that people are so scared and discouraged by the sudden drop in value. Most Crypto traders and investors are less knowledgeable about the dynamic of Cryptocurrency. Well, it's a time to buy dip and connect with good traders that knows the Ins and outs of wall street wizardry. I'm much covered and secured about the market thanks to HENRY BROWN TRADE OPTIONS 😁✅
that's why you need the help of a professional who trade and understand the market more to earn good income
These professionals understand the markets like it's there own farm and makes maximum profits for investors
Didn't this same thing happen in the 20's or 30's? Over farmed an area and turn it into a disaster.
Called The Dust Bowl. Midwest. History. Its actually in...
Books!!! History books!!!
Water shortage? Why is it illegal for us to store rain water then?
Farmers are denied water because it's reserved for the cities, where a huge portion of it is wasted on golf courses, lawns, washing cars, showering daily, etc. We need to wake the f#@k up. And to those commenting that it's "just California" & they have plenty of water in the Midwest...wait til it hits the food market. California grows a huge percentage of our fruit & vegetables. You'll be the first ones complaining that you can't find or afford certain produce. We're all in this together, but you can't tell by looking at self-absorbed Americans' reactions
Growing peaches and oranges in this part of the country doesn't make much sense. Almonds, though delicious, is not a life sustaining crop. There are hundreds of golf courses throughout the southwest that are beautifully manicured. All of which require ridiculous amounts of water to sustain. All of it is completely unnecessary. This stuff isn't hard to see folks, we just have to agree to see it.
Praying for water 😭😭😭😭😭
40 million residents and animals with very big thirsts.
Why don't they build desalination plants for irrigation
It’s probably the best solution in the long term, but it does cause tons of pollution and waste through the desalination process
So do you think maybe if you got rid of all of the activist and put somebody in office who cares about the people they were talking about and the planet you might be able to save something
Industrial farming was never sustainable in the first place.
For a country famous for pointing a gun at anyone who steps on their land, their disrespect and the amount of abuse they put their plots through seems ironic.
Deeper! More water! More! More! More!
Is it true there's no restrictions on ground water? When I was in Colorado the state made them pay for water used and had limits.
Water is strongly regulated in California, including recent improvements to groundwater regulation. However, before this, there were years of severe groundwater overdraft in some areas due to intensive farming. And there is an archaic system of historical water rights, so some landowners are legally able to over use water in some cases.
@@eh3477 I think in Colorado water was divvied up similarly but ground water was free up until a certain amount was pumped, then there was a fee after that to discourage it.
Historically California never regulated pumping - the dirty secret nobody ever wanted to talk about - so much water has been pumped out that some towns are 20' lower and dropping a foot a year. California is planning to finally regulate ground water, but there was big opposition from these rich, greedy farmers who effectively stole massive amounts of water to irrigate in the middle of a desert.
Water depletion is one of the largest reasons for desertification, yet it's one of the issues that never get's adressed until it's too late! Stop it! Let trees grow that are good at holding on the water as well! Not just almond/orange trees that consume a lot of water!
agree - and let’s stop raising animals for slaughter, then water for grazing land isn’t needed
@@sjain8111 Good idea... Lets allow 200,000 illegals to sneak in every month. Then we can stop raising livestock and growing fruit trees... Soylent Green tastes so much better anyways... And with 200,000 illegals sneaking in every month and using up all the water instead... The Soylent Green will be nice and juicy... Dry Soylent Green sucks... Lets also ban fishing and the growing of corn and wheat... And while were at it lets ban rational thought and common sense too. Its so outdated...
Agriculture uses the lion's share of California's water. Get your facts straight.
Shut your mouth
@@GearHedd Please show us some actual facts documenting "200,000 illegals sneaking into .... California" every month.
A lot of holes coming out... there’s no water underground anymore!!!
Farming the desert was only possible by the dams and using up the groundwater but the massive amounts of water used combined with the geoengineering have created a crisis.
Another man made crisis , drill for more water when you have a canal full. Yes sir gotta keep those coast toilets flushing! Keep it up the looming devastation will make the dust bowl look like a spring rain.
Human impact . USA gone to hell for sure .
It's always been like that out there. We're getting tons of rain in the Midwest
All humans will be gone to hell for sure
I wish we could have sent you some rain. Weve been flooding here in Central Texas . Every week we were getting rain for weeks. It comes off the Gulf and Pacific Ocean. The rain goes East. Lousiana too is flooding. Lake Charles and Baton Rouge. We had a drought a couple a years ago and the Lakes fell. We are tired of rain.
I know. I am from kyle texas. These politicians on all levels are not doing a damn thing.
Crops and critters don't have AC.
We grow more than enough cattle in the Ozarks and do it without irrigation. The Regional stockyards at West Plains Mo. markets 5000 head of feeder calves every Tuesday. lots of smaller cattle markets all over Arkansas and Missouri. If we had a viable market we would grow all the fruits and vegtables the nation needs. The big companies destroyed the small producers markets.
Cows can actually save the climate.
Growing plants (and esp. crops) destroys it!
California is a desert....who of guessed growing crops in a desert would be a problem. Same with Arizona, etc.
California does have 3 major deserts but to say "California is a desert" is false. California has a diverse climate that varies widely from hot deserts to subarctic depending on latitude and elevation. The state is split into 15 different climate zones.
@@treeodore4369 Oh, aren't you cute! I'd suggest you study historical rainfall data for all the regions of California. CA has never produced enough rainfall to support mass AG, the reason they have to divert water from one region to another. Facts matter.
@Ramen Lover Go back in your moms basement little boy, eat some ramen noodles and study the historical rainfall data for California and the DESERT SW....then get back to me. There is a reason it's called a desert, fool!
@David Raymer California averages about 20"-30" inches of rain per season, about 75% of rain falls in the northern and central part of the state. You fail to mention our snowpack which accounts for about 30% of our water. So again, California does have major deserts, but to call the entire state a desert is laughable.
California needs to start building a fleet of floating water desalination plants like other countries are already doing. All the water they need is right of shore of them.
What does that do to local fish habitat?
Water desalination is expensive and bad for the environment so no. Easy way out
Wow! It's a miracle! 20-40 years! Is that a politicians length of a his stay in office. Damn, if the people fall for this idea got have mercy on all of them. Pump water from flooded areas throughout america. Damn you can pump gasoline from Houston to new York and pump oil from north Dakota to Texas, how more difficult is it with water. And not only that but it is safer. Come on, you all behaving like children.
they can gather lots of water from the fog near the ocean
complete bullshit. this won't solve anything. all you need is to regenerate the soil (and stop destroying it)...
California has a long history (200 years+) of droughts. In the late 1800's, the state suffered from a drought that wiped out large sectors of agriculture. The problem is worse now because 40 million people live there, and various environmental restrictions have prevented the development of water supplies (from the north) that would secure additional capacity for the Valley and the Southland during inevitable drought years.
At least one of the planned reservoirs was later found to be on an unstable earthquake fault. Filling this with water now would put millions at risk of a catastrophic flood. There is another reservoir plan that is potentially viable, however there are indigenous sites and other environmental issues still to be worked out. This was postponed by a previous governor, but work could continue at a later date. Other environmental restrictions preserve threatened and endangered salmon runs, which are also a large part of the economy.
@@eh3477 EH, Thanks for your response.
Environmental restrictions..that's a good one. So it's the greens fault?
Most of our water feeds southern california. Built on desert! Hmmmmmm
I feel sorry for the farmers but they were just trying to make a living. Governments should have instituted strict water saving measures years ago. Now, it may be to late. Quit watering lawns, decorative trees, restrict car washes, restrict water use in the home and office. Shut off all water fountains. These are just some of the measures that can be taken. This shortage will end up costing everyone when there are no groceries.
This will not end well...
California has plenty of water... the problem is they have routed every bit of it into the ocean the Delta River is the prime example the 100-year lease is long overdue and up.. restore it back through California along with the rest of them.. they need to replant trees all over California every place they have deforested Swimming Pools and Hot Tubs are a huge waste of water.... man has diverted the water into the ocean which at one time replenished the aquifer the massive deforestation of California has changed the climate there worse than any other state
Just like we have an electrical national grid, an interstate highway system, and a nation wide communication system we should have a water supply system. At this day and age we should have a water supply system, but I guess we have an incompetent group of politicians running every level of government. What a shame and embarrassment .
Ya so so they can tax you for it, to death. What about common sense and stewardship?
You can't have cities that use everything up and produce nothing but filth, continuing. This is natures way of cleaning up the unbalance.
Definitely a lack of leadership.
California has one of the world's most efficient/largest water systems - but when you're in an extreme drought (as is almost all the southwest), nothing will help other than culling herds/fallowing land.
Can’t they use desalination tanks?
TANKS BUT NO TANKS
the problem is after lets say 30 years there will be no water for this tanks
What's your plan for the waste produced?
@@dimtiartachev1573 ofc that not the case, the water eventualy return back to ocean. Its not like the water used for irrigation magicaly disappear
That takes electricity that is needed for electric cars and air conditioners. We must have our priorities.
I live by the Great Lakes and we have no crisis. We're actually getting lots of water. I'm getting tired of mowing the lawn!
Plenty of water but not enough sunlight to grow almonds or oranges. Though the worst thing would be if a pipe was built from the Great Lakes to California. Parts of the Great Lakes would slowly be depleted of fresh water and salt water from the Atlantic would be flowing in from the St. Lawrence River.
@@guardianoffire8814 ya i live in vages and the lake somehow california has 50% of the water rights us 4%.
We should be in drought effect right now but no 37% isn't low enough god.
Oh best part california can drop the water 30 more feet so 5% more without restrictions.
Vages uses 70 to 100% gray water so we reuse it.
California reuses like at most 10% and 2 or 3% is desalination so 13% in all how are we going to live if you don't stop.
Also I hear there planting pecan trees and ripped out almond trees because drought.
Hm problem with that almond tree full grown with fruits needs 90 to 100 gallons a day.
Pecan tree fully grown fruiting will use 150 to 250 gallons a day.
But they say pecan is more sustainable ya right.
An average farm uses 1 million or more gallons of water a day.
An average acer of farmed corn uses 600,000 gallons start to finish in 3 to 4 months.
I'm in college and ather have done this to but we grew 1 acer of corn start to finish 4 months used 80,000 gallons of water.
2nd year it was 50,000 gallons of water.
We did that in Arizona in summer with 95 to 115 temperatures.
It's not a desert region that's why
@@guardianoffire8814 Yes that salt water would flow right up Niagara Falls.

Atleast they can eat money and profits, is that why we are here ,water is on the stocks market for a reason
They can't hear you.....
They mismanaged the forest and the water for decades
If it’s so fertile then why the lack of water?
This is not my expertise, but I get the feeling that forests, or lack thereof (aka fire damage), might contribute strongly to the water supply.
Not really.
Forest health and condition does generally have some effect on water supply, but this year the problem is simply that very little water fell out of the sky as rain and snow.
Monoculture has been around maybe this is the down side.
Look up Viktor schauberger the water wizard, when you cut down the trees, the springs dry up.
Not really, grassland is as good as forest to contain the water and maintain the (micro)-climate. You just need to manage it in a natural way with grazing animals.
What you do not want is to grow plants which destroys the soils and that leads to desertification.
See the talks of Walter Jehne here on YT...
They use more then they have.and wanted to build a pipeline from Canada to get even more water. Old problem been years in the making
Robbing Peter to pay Paul.....
i saw a video where they take processed sewage and were running it in a desert and now trees are growing again. and i bet you go in california towns and people are watering their lawns non stop

Its abrupt, IRREVERSABLE, climate change. There may be brief, localized, heavy rains. The atmosphere will hold about 7% more moisture for every degree Celsius above the 1750s baseline. We are now about 2C above that baseline and headed for more. China is experiencing record, crop drowning, rains and the Western USA a 20 year, plus, record, hot, drought. Pray? what do you think rain dances were? Water is free, you have to manage it. Cities have always been the problem, read your bible for a change. L>A> gets most of the water, look it up.
I don’t know much about this topic, but it seems to me that we could work together to solve this by planting more trees and other varieties of plant life that would help promote clouds/oxygen/weather or what have you. I presume something to do with soil regeneration would help as well as I assume that the healthier soil would hold the water better than these mono crop systems.
Salizination of ocean water? Costly yeah what can they do
Regenerate the soil by using holistic management...

i wont be buying almonds from cali cuz the farmers take up too much space and water. Greed is not success anymore, its just stupidity. Character is currency now. Better get some.
Sea levels rising the Californians cry.. We ain't got no water wonder why?.. Overpopulation.
well farmers use more water than all the people and all the corporations combined.....by alot. so there is that tiny fact.
But without farmers you have no food
With holistic grass management, the farmers would have more grass for their cattle. Poor water management leads to water shortage as we can see worldwide.
Most of California is not suited for cattle grazing.
California is experiencing the most severe drought. About 15 of the past 20 years have also been drought years. The landscape is not suitable for cattle, plus intensive agriculture of crops unsuited for the western climate, plus 40 million residents. Something has to give. This is not a holistic range management problem.
