  • This is a quick build. I really wanted a cocktail smoker but refused to pay $60-$100 to get one. Instead what I did was but one myself.

    One thing about this that really gets under my skin. The grate is meant to keep particles from falling into the drink. Eventually the wood is going to break down and those holes will widen. If you put the ingredients inside the strainer, torch it, then cover it, the same flavors happen.

      Put screen down in smoker hole. Put shavings (such as oak, hickory, cherry or pecan) down in the screen. Light with torch. Put cap on for a few seconds.

      Say it with confidence and more people will never question you. You put your smoke media in the bowl of the screen. Also the $60 you claim usually comes with 4-6 types of wood shavings, tools, and sometimes I nice wooden box. But anyways, you created a working device. I’ll give you that.

    Yes. This is how I will be doing it. The premade ones seems silly for the price. On another note of DIY. I bought a new $5 baking dish for the house, then used an old one we had of the same dimensions, drilled holes all over it, and ended up with a veggie tray for the grill in about 30 minutes and have a brand new one for the kitchen. Works like a charm and save about $20!

    Ok, so while I like what you built, nice job BTW, I have an issue with doing something like this. You need to take into consideration how much your time is worth. I don’t know about you but for me to make something like this, 2hr minimum is what I’d be looking at. Considering my drive to and from the box store too, it just makes more sense to buy one. Picked one up on Amazon for less than $25.
    AND, take into consideration the time you took to make this how-to video too 🤪
    Thanks tho

    I love the design, just made one myself, but haven’t used it yet....But why do you put the tea into the bottom and then put in the mesh filter? Why not put the tea into the mesh and then light it? Wouldn’t be easier to clean out? Not criticizing, just wondering

    • @allthingsrandom8137

      Trent Hischke I did that at first but the problem is once you start lighting it, it tends to flare out and go everywhere making a mess. It’s the pressure from the torch that causes it to blow out.

      burning the glue with fire is different than high heat or simply having contact, smokers like the foghat are made from one piece of wood with a lathe. also make sure you are using a stainless steel strainer and not a chrome plated drain cover. its most likely way too small of an exposure to hurt anything but effects from carcinogens are long term

      Burning wood doesn’t necessarily damage the wood in the means that it’s going to fail in the future. A lot of times smokers tend to have a torched exterior. The only reason why, I had the tea underneath, was because every time I try to torch it, the tea flew everywhere. If using something like wood chips, something lighter to actually smoke, then you would put it on top of the strainer

    While I commend your engonuity and appreciate DIY, I do not think this is a safe build for two reasons. The first being you used wood glue to attach the bowl to the base. The smoke from that glue will be highly toxic. The same goes for the sink strainer. You have no idea what chemicals and processes they use on those strainers. Applying 2000 degrees F to it and injesting the smoke residue cannot be safe.

    • @AlexisG54
      @AlexisG54 3 роки тому

      They have food grade wood glue (titebond 3) that is meant for indirect contact with food surfaces. Meaning it is safe to use for food preparation. They use this same glue on multi-piece construction cutting boards.

    Cringe. Poor woodworking skills and safety aside, the screen stays in and the wood shavings or tea, or whatever material you are burning gets put on the screen to prevent particles from falling into the glass. Most designs use pipe screens. (Tobacco pipes, not plumbing pipes.) Thats what they are made for and they cost pennies each.
