    My grandfather would spend hours in his shop building these beautiful wooden model ships,his best he said was H.M.S. Africa built from plans not a kit.
    He could work fast but,he took his sweet time putting the Africa aside for other projects..grandpa passed away in 1983,I ended up finishing the Africa,i had not worked on a wood model but,watched him build,with a great deal of advice and help from friends of my grandfather I did it,eight years after he built the ship I did the masts,rigging, boats and the finely molded metal crew figures..H.M.S.Africa,sits in the Seattle maritime museum..scale is 1/72 it's a good size replica.
    My grandfather gets full credit for the build,my name is for owner/doner only.

    8 and a half months! I was thinking 1-2 years! Absolutely museum quality!
    astonishing job, well executed.
    I would consider putting this on display at a public library as inspiration to young, and old minds.
    It is beautiful.

      Thank you very much for your kind words! It was the most difficult and at the same time most beautiful model i ever made. It has on it 13-14 years of experience in wooden model ships and i had made 10 ships before Santa Ana! The photographs do not show all the greatness of the model! Unfortunately in our days the young ones cannot understand the value of making a model and in my country (Greece) we are very few who can make a model like this...

      Your experience shows in your work, I figured - suspected by the 8 1/2 months. time line that you had done this quite a few times.This would have taken me 2 yrs as I do not have a lot of ship kits under my belt, and I strive for perfection, but settle for my best.
      Unfortunately we here { US } do not see youngsters in the hobby shops very often. They seem to have some device glued to their hand or ear, that also keeps their eyes and full attention glued to it also.
      Again Thanks for sharing your work on the net for all to see. Well done!

    When I look at this all I can think about is the real ship, it's great to have a scale model to really see how amazing they were, imagine having to learn what all those ropes do, and the names of the sails, and going up those masts, what a hard life they lived.
    Thanks for letting us see it.

      Thank you very much for your kind words!!! You describe every thought it went through my mind when i was building it. A ship of this type had a crew of around 800 people. It is a same that this one is not among us anymore. I have a dream, i wish someday to be able to visit the HMS Victory who is stationery at Portsmouth UK and see everything in 1:1 scale!!! I wish i'll be able to see the USS Constitution too who is in Boston USA.

      "So it would seem."
      Honestly I prefer the Santisima Trinidad. But that's for personal reasons. And the Santa Ana is indeed quite beautiful. Spanish first rates may not have been the most efficient ships out there but they were some beautiful behemoths. And if you take into account that the reason they were designed that was was because their primary function was as defensive patrols on the relatively populated mediterranean and caribean seas it makes sense that they'd ignore speed and maneuverability in exchange for raw firepower and imposing size. Not many pirates would have the balls to get close to, much less try to attack, a massive 112 cannons floating castle like Santa Ana, much less the 140 cannons biggest-and-most-heavily-armed-ship-of-its-era that was the Santisima Trinidad. Only Horatio (motherloving) Nelson would be crazy enough to try his luck against that! And he did... and won... somehow. Fucking Nelson. He was either insane or a genius. I still don't think anyone knows which for sure. But he did make it work!

    Mr. Aliprantis, your ships are totally gorgeous. They show that not only do you have an intense interest in your craft but have the skill, dexterity and incredible patience over most of a year to complete the project. I am currently near the end of building the Artesania 1/16 scale Sopwith Pup aircraft. I am into WW I aircraft and love the art of their structure. But I have learned over 75 years of model building that patience is something that can make or break getting to the end of a long project without messing up something along the way with the quality of the result. Doing smaller projects gives a new builder the opportunity to learn about whether he has sufficient patience to complete a particular size project. I am not sure I have your patience for a single project of that complexity so I pick my projects such that I have confidence I can complete them with adequate satisfaction with the results. Congratulations.

    • @JohnsWoodenShips
      @JohnsWoodenShips  5 років тому

      Thank you very much for your kind words Joe!!! True, i have a lot of patience. I love complex and detailed models because i enjoy very much the result. I believe that from the moment you are a modeler you can try something more difficult. I started making plastic models when i was a teenager ,over 30 years ago. At a moment of my life (back on 2001) i wanted to make something really difficult and i bought my first wooden model ship. I still remember all the wrong things i did, all the mistakes. The result was close enough to the picture of the box but not as good as it should be to make me satisfied. So i bought another more complex and another and another ,until i made it to be better than the picture of the box! And now i am still learning new and better ways to make the models more beautiful! Try it, you will love the result!!!

    • @joefriend6720
      @joefriend6720 5 років тому +1

      As you point out, every project is a learning experience, not only learning about materials and tools but learning about one's self. In 2010 I finished a full size airplane that took a quick 6 full time years. During large projects where patience wanes or life gets in the way you have to walk away from the work until the right attitude and patience returns, not too much different than having to finally get some sleep at the end of a long day. So many experimental airplanes don't get finished because of ones misunderstanding about what they are capable of, need to learn and the obstacles that have to be overcome like job change or divorce or many other life experiences that affect ones priorities and mindset. Short of getting to the finish line I find moments when I just stop, step back and enjoy looking at the completion of a particular phase of the project. The satisfaction of enjoying this partial success fuels my ambition for going on. I feel you experience the same thing through your photos. So many satisfying experiences.

      @@JohnsWoodenShips Thanks John i appreciate the offer and just keep making great video's bro,, i have used some wood and cardboard to make the hull shape but i would like a Fibre Glass Mould shape so i can paper over that to make the hull shape then matchstick the paper and then remove from the mould ect,, if i could get someone to make me a fibre glass hull that would make Hull building much easier and then re use the Fibre glass hull for other ship hull building,, i make battery cases for Vapers the same way, i cover a battery with paper that has a 5mm section in the middle that has no paper so i match just the paper and it is what i call the Turret shape Holder as it looks like the top of a castle tower and i mark the ends of the matches so it can be pulled apart and put together as it only has one correct way ect,, i use to cut them but it cuts into the battery so doing it this way saves cutting into a battery and they look great when done then i re use the battery for the next Battery case,, i live in the UK but i am sure i can find someone who could make the Hull but as a one off piece i would have to pay!! and it would not be cheap! anyway i am now looking for the right paper to cover the hull,, can you recommend a paper i can cut into strips to make the shape so i can match it without the paper bowing or going out of shape?, if you can recommend a paper i would be grateful as i don't want a mis shaped hull ,,,

    These ships are great to build. I'm building the U.S.S. Constitution (Old Ironsides) it has taken me a while to finish, what with family obligations first thing then another. Started it in 1999 still working on it here and there. My kit was a storm flood kit from hurricane Floyd and had many destroyed pieces but enough to see the boat slip one day. Your model looks great like the cannons. And brass hardware. Somehow mine disappeared.

      These ships indeed are great to build! I have made the USS Constitution back on 2002-3. The model was from Constructo. Unfortunately i did not take any pictures during the procedure...It is a very beautiful vessel and i hope one day to be able to see it live at Boston harbor. You have to finish your model, it is a part of history and the most important thing, it is still among us!

    Those are some buitifull ships. Great video. I just listened to an old Paul Harvey radio story. The hull to the Santa Maria is being used as the rafters in a 300 year old barn in Great Britian. When the ship was decomishioned it was bought by a farmer. One of the main supports from the ship has its number still readable stamped in the would.

    Great build John! i would like to comment to those people asking if they can build this or other large sailing ships with no experience. the answer is not simple, if you have confidence in your own skills, or maybe experience in other model building and am willing to research methods then i would say yes quite possibly. From my own experience my first model is a 1/84 scale hms victory that i am still working on after 2 years BUT the instructions are step by step with colour photos, if i had attempted the Santa Ana it would have been a much bigger challenge. look for a model with superb instructions or where there are good video build logs[like johns] which really help if you get stuck. It can be done but most ship modellers would correctly suggest making a smaller less complicated model to build confidence and skill. Its a really satisfying hobby if you love ships. best of luck.

    My husband makes ships like these, he does not buy a kit, he makes everything himself. Starts with gluing two pieces of wood together, then secures it when dry, starts to make the body,, by hollowing out a hole in the middle. That ends up as the inside of the ship. This is how he starts. My husband has golden hands !
