From keel to deck - part 01 of building the HMS TERROR from Occre
Вставка
- Опубліковано 30 жов 2021
- In 1845, under the command of Sir John A. Franklin, the ships Terror and Erebus set off on an expedition to navigate the famous Northwest Passage. They were the first ships to be fitted out with auxiliary steam engines and were also reinforced with iron plating, fore and aft, to increase their resistance to pack ice. They were stocked with sufficient supplies for 3 years at sea.
The last sighting of the two ships was off Greenland was as they entered Baffin Bay, gateway to the frozen Arctic labyrinth.
With the collaboration of an Inuit hunter from the Arctic hamlet of Gjoa Haven, on 26th September 2016 the wreck of H.M.S. Terror, 168 years after her disappearance, was finally discovered. The Terror was in excellent condition. Images have been obtained of her deck and interior, showing perfectly preserved objects and parts of the ship that remained intact.
With this "from keel to deck" I started a series of assembling videos of a wooden ship model of the H.M.S. Terror from Occre in scale 1/75 eventually placed in a diorama. The Terror will be shown stuck in the pack ice.
Many thanks to Erick Miotke for his fantastic music theme which covers the dramatic ice situation. Happy Halloween...

The fact you have the patience to build this advanced ship model and film it in stop motion as you build it is mind blowing. Wonderful.
Thank you
@@TomGrigat Hey Tom ! Do you sell your models ?
Yes
@@TomGrigat Do you have a catalogue with pricing ? Or can you build a model on demand ? I am interested .
I don't have any catalogue nor built on demand yet. You may contact me over email. Take a look at my channel Infos please.
The best 10 minutes of UA-cam!! It's one thing to build a highly complex and involved model and another mind boggling level of complexity to film it in stop motion!
I'm pleased to hear 😊
Agree!!!!
Absolutely amazing! I can't even compute how you do it,or the skill, patience, and time involved... Mind=blown!
Thank you very much 😊
"Creativity takes courage!"
Henry Matisse
Thank you, for this, and for all that is coming ahead
Thanks for your kind words 😊
I don't know which is more impressive; the model making or the video editing. Both are on a level far beyond those of mortal men. Me hats off to the Duke!
Thank you very much 😊
I have built many wooden ship models, plastic and metal models and I can say that Building a wooden ship model is one of the hardest builds for a modeler. For example in certain big kits ( like the hms victory) once you have finished the hull you still have 60% of the work left to do. You are a Master builder my friend and I look forward to watch the next episodes of this wonderful ship.
Thanks for your kind words 😊
Wow, can't imagine the time it requires to build it this well. Good thing it builds by itself.
😅
Another terrific viewing and also the music is fantastic, tell Eric M. thanks again for putting these amazing soundracks to your masterworks.
Yes, Erick did a fantastic job.
I know for a fact how much work this is. Amazing video!
Thanks a lot
I love the fact that you actually wrapped some rope around the wheel and connected it to the rudder. It look beautiful
As usual an excellent watch .So entertaining .Can't wait for part two.
As always the sheer amount of detail and work you put in is insane. I didn't want the construction video split into 3 episodes as I thought they were going to be 3 or 4 minutes each, but almost 11 minutes for just one episode ! Wow !!
Building a ship model by itself is hard. Making it look this beautiful in a stop motion animation is just a whole new level. I don't even imagine how much patience you have :)
You have my utmost respect!
For the sake of Halloween.... the level of detail is just frightening! Mindbogling awesome Tom, as always! You’re super talented!
Thank you very much 😊
Each time, you create another masterpiece in video and miniature form. So incredible, always inspiring. Thank you.
You're welcome 😊
What can I say.
Very interesting choice of model; I just looked up the horrifying back story. A piece of history worth remembering.
The amount of detail in the build is simply stunning, it will surely be worthy as a museum piece once it's finished. The animation, lighting and photography is out of this world. I don't know how you do it and I can't even imagine how much work went into this.
Kudos also for the soundtrack.
I absolutely loved it. Thank you.
You're welcome 😊
Canadian here, was elated when news broke that they'd found Terror and Erebus.
Crazy that the Inuit had passed knowledge of the location of the ships down through all the generations. Not surprising though, considering their culture's proud oral history.
Another stunningly crafted and executed video and model build. The amount of work you have put into this is phenomenal and very appreciated. Thank you.
Great video. That looks to be on complicated build. Will follow this.
I'm pleased to hear 😊
Incredible model building, layers of details in there. More impressive that you could build it so well and still film it in such a tedious yet amazing way. Bravo
Thank you very much for your kind words 😊
Tom, this is just ... Don't know what to say !!! Awesome work. The entry OcCre team are loving it. We can't wait for the second part! 😍😍
Hats off to you 👏🏼👏🏼
Thank you very much - I'm very glad you like it. Greetings to the OcCre team.
Beautiful ship, beautiful model and a Tragic Tale. Amundsen beat us to it again and again apparently
The work that goes into these videos is amazing. Not only do you produce a beautiful finished model, the animation and story along the way are fantastic. Thank you for doing it!
You're welcome 😊
Watching your videos is no mere entertainment.
It's an adventure.
To build such model is crazy enough, but all your effort for this kind of video is incredible.
Thanks a lot 😊
A noble little vessel, given the attention she deserves here.
Thank you, so inspiring.
You're welcome
Stunning as always.....my mind just boggles at the time and effort involved in making the video, let alone the model as well 👍
Fantastic 1st installment of more to come. Love the sound of the breaking ice along with the moody music. It looks so real I can't imagine myself ever taking part on a voyage back in those days. What they had to work with would scare most today. I'd stay on land all of my life, or least away from the ice.
I'm pleased you like the interpretation. Erick made a fantastic sound.
By itself, the model is a brilliant piece of art! But the stop motion animation is magical. Well done!
Thank you very much 😊
Wow. It's a masterpiece! Not only do I love the tragic story of the expedition, I get to see this ship up close and personal in a way I just can't get from a static photo. Looking forward to the next part!
Thank you very much 😊
This man blows me away. On top of painstakingly making hyper-detailed hand made models which takes tonnes of time, he also shoots it in stop motion which also take an incredible amount of time. Outstanding work!
Here;Here!
How in the living hell, could someone thumbs down this!.. What a complete Fool. Awesome, Awesome job as always!! A true Master!
Excellent as always!
My man isnt satisfied with only building a wooden ship, but he also stopmotions its building stages. That's on another level
Amazing as always. Your videos are a pleasure to watch. Outstanding craftmanship. Greatly looking forward to the next chapter.
I'm pleased to hear you like my work 😊
@@TomGrigat I've enjoyed all your stop-motion videos. Reminds me of the christmas shows I watched as a kid.
Brilliant. This was my lockdown 1 project in April last year (I’m in the UK). Watching your video, I can’t believe I actually did it. It’s a wonderful model and a wonderful/tragic story. In April this year, I flew over the site of the wrecks of Terror and Erebus in Arctic Canada. Well done, and thanks for this superb film - it serves as a reminder of those long days when we weren’t allowed out last year. I’m looking forward to seeing your rigging!
Thanks for your interesting info 👍
Hope you enjoyed a lot!! ;)
@@Occre it was amazing.
This is insane! I guess the stop motion part was even more work than building the model was. And it really makes you apretiate how sturdy those two ships were build back in the days!
Since this came out yesterday, I've been working my way through the BBC series, watching documentaries on here and reading articles. Thanks Tom for an inspiring video!
I'm pleased to hear 😊
Has the BBC checked your licensing or should I call them? Lol. ( I'm not sure exactly what that's about but have watched a couple of vids on u tube about it because it piqued my curiosity. Seems intrusive and maddening. Ah the gov. what would we do without them?? Haha.)
I am assuming your in the U.K. but that's kind of dense of me. I can watch it in the U.S. of course. Soo if you are in fact not. Disregard all my nonsense.
@@greggrace967 I am in the UK Greg and I pay the Licence Fee! The BBC series is a re-imagining of the events, precious little historical accuracy sadly so if you do watch it, prepare for a flight of fantasy, not an educational documentary.
Purely awesome.. I can't even think how much time it took just for the motion effects.. U got me subbed to your channel Sir.
I'm pleased to hear - enjoy my work 😊
Immer wieder unfassbar, wie alles so geschmeidig zusammen kommt!
Freut mich, wenn es gefällt
Thanks for releasing this as series! Cant wait for the next episode!
I'm pleased you like it 😊
Outstanding craftsmanship and cinematography, as always!
Day 58: That rigging's not going to fix itself...
Great skills.
As ever, I'm not sure if I should be more impressed with the stop motion and post production or the attention to detail in the build. Just fabulous.
(The rigging should be epic with this one!)
Thanks - I'm really looking forward to the rigging. I love the meditative kind of work and the graphical enhancement to the model
Your work is simply outstanding in many ways. Your craftsmanship is world class and the way you present it is simply art, very sophisticated art I would say. I can only imagine how much dedication and hard work you have invested to perfect your skills. Wonderful!
What makes this video even more interesting is that you are building a ship model from OcCre. Not long ago, I was introduced to their models by another modeler, and that provoced my interest. Therefore, I decided to build my first wooden ship model myself. Polaris from OcCre. Since it's been quite a while since I've build any models, the build is going to be very interesting, challenging, frustrating and educating experience! But it will be a start, and starting something is in my experience one of the most important steps in everything.
Thanks for your kind words 😊
Thanks a lot! Appreciate it.
We are super happy to know that you are enjoying the OcCre experience :)
Season one of The Terror was amazing loved the historical fiction of the Franklin Party
Your build leaves me in awe. I've learnt more watching this build than watching many, many other channels. I've been building plastic for years and I'm slowly moving into wooden ship kits because of the challenge and pleasure of working with wood but this has taught me so much, I'm deeply grateful of the way you share your skills and new ways of building that I've never seen before. Thank you sir, and, as always, I look forward to your next masterclass.
I'm pleased to hear you like my work. I felt the same like you regarding the plastic and wood modelling. There will be a lot plastic kit animations as well though...
You won't regret moving to wooden ships :)
Phantastic ! Still no Machine or Robot is able to build such artful Objekts. This reminds me that Humans are not completely useless. Großartig, kann ich echt nur bewundern.
Applaud to this guy, imagine the hours it took him to not only build a model but to take hundreds of pictures of it simultaneously. This TOM is very underrated.
Thank you very much 😊
This is pure modeling ... thank you so much Tom for sharing it, bye from Italy
At every stage I thought it was the most beautiful and then it kept getting beautifuler 👏🏻👏🏻♥️♥️
Thank you very much 😊
Absolutely Incredible .Very good work. Thank for sharing.
You're welcome
These videos are absolutely fascinating. No idea how you manage to both build these wonderful models and create such stunning videos.
I've admired all of your work but this is next level. Beautiful model and the video was just amazing, looking forward to parts II and III.
I'm glad you like it 😊
That was outstanding 👏 both build and video. Looking forward for the sequel.
I'm pleased to hear
Incredible work, Tom. Somehow you always find a way to raise the bar. Your videos are a joy.
I'm pleased to hear 😊
Absolutely stunning!
That sound you heard was my jaw hitting the floor…..outstanding work as always Tom. Looking forward to next instalment.
Thanks a lot
An engineering and craft-making masterpiece, Sir! Stunning concept, work, & photography...a feast for the eyes!👍🏻👏🏻😍
Thank you
Amazing. Not just the modelling but the video. 10/10
Thank you
This video is a gift to humanity, many thanks
The irony of naming a ship the Terror only for their expedition to end in a horror show shouldn't be lost on anyone. Great model BTW, I can't wait the next part.
thank you very much - next part will take it's time
Awesome work !!! looking forward to the second part
Thanks - it may last a while...
Absolutely great work! The video is stunning. I am in the middle of this build myself and your detail is
so very helpful. Thanks again
Magnifique, bravo !
Absolutely outstanding work!
Thanks a lot
Brilliant as always. Great to see another build medium.
It looks incredible. Your most detailed model to date. I want to watch it a second time to be able to properly take everything in, loved it!
Thank you very much 😊
NICE! With all the different material types, shaping, small assemblies, and sub structures that is some fantastic work. It is a pleasure to watch. Congrats!
I'm pleased to hear 😊
Magnificent. To be an artisan at just one skill is something one would hope to achieve...you demonstrate that here in 2. I am REALLY looking forward to seeing the sails.
I'm pleased to hear you like it 😊
Beautiful as always! Look forward to part 2. Stunning Tom great video
Thank you
I could watch these videos all day long, amazing like always!
Thanks
this is incredible stuff please keep putting these out there they are appreciated!
Thanks, I'll do
Anxiously awaiting next installments. Harrrrrr mattyyy.
Your work is next level
Thank you
Fantastic job! Can't wait for the next installment!
I'm pleased to hear - but it will last a while...
Wow! Just Wow! Never saw a format like this and like it to see finished model quick, but also would like to see your techniques in regular time seeing that you're a perfectionist. Just beautiful and thanks.
Thanks for your kind words 😊
Now I know what you do while waiting for paint and clue to dry.............. Stop motion animation. Always, I have so much respect and awe of your work sir. You never fail to impress.
I'm pleased to hear 😊
I’m new to ship modeling but have an old kit from the 1970s. This helps so much. It gives me the sequence of the build, details not shown in the plans, tips on how I can improve the model with extra add ons. I’m grateful for your artistry and patience. I hope you’ve had a lot of fun during the creative process. I’m retired now, but used to do museum exhibits. This would be a great addition to a maritime museum’s display if you would ever be interested. The Peabody museum north of Boston comes to mind, or the Lake Champlain museum in Vergennes, Vermont, or Mystic Seaport in CT. So many others. Inspiring work!
An incredible video of a marvellously built model.
Thank you very much
This is super clean and smooth work! Well I ruined about five plank-on-bulkhead ship models in my life due to lack of skills. I always marvel at such clean work. Now with awesome animation. Incredible!!! Can't wait for the next installment!
I'm pleased you like it
WOW!!! The amount of work that must have taken is staggering
Yes it took a while....
Astonishing for both the build and the photography.
Thank you
There are simply no words, you keep upping the ante with more difficult projects and stellar editing. You are unparalleled in this medium. I salute you!
Thanks for your kind words 😊
Holy crap! Glorious! Such great work!
Thank you
Brilliant work as always. I really do admire your skill level in both modelling and stop motion film making it is exceptional, you are a true inspiration to all 👍👍
Thank you very much for your kind words 😊
This is one of the coolest video I've ever seen...
I'm pleased to hear
Not that building the model is not tough enough, turning it into a stop motion action video too... Amazing!
thank you very much
Awesome. I thought building the billing cutty sark was difficult, but this is inspired. Thank you for sharing.
I'm pleased to hear 😊
Unbelievably well made, the model as well as the video. Therapy for the mind, simply wonderful.
Thank you
This is, perfection of modeling and editing!
Thank you
Must be from metaverse .. no other possible explanation in this standart universe. Full dedication, unbelievable patience, awesome skill
Thank you very much 😊
beside the awesome modeling skills... the stop motion editing style is amazing!
I'm pleased to hear 😊
Thank you for these video's! They are truly amazing. I could watch them all day.
I'm pleased to hear
Автор не только творит искусство, но и то как он это снимает и монтирует искусство не меньшее! Терпение и усидчивость у человека потрясающие! Великолепно!
This is ART.
well done with the model
Thank you
Amazing work, both buliding the model AND the stop motion photo/cinematography! Magic!
Thank you very much
I could spend hours watching these videos: relaxing and mesmerizing
Thank you
I plan on ordering this kit soon. It looks amazing.
