If a brass instrument hasn’t been cleaned in a while, you will need a chemical clean “chem clean” ask your local music shop they should be able to do it
I've been a tuba player for about 50 years and learnt how to clean my instrument whilst still at school (obviously, that was back in the stove age!). When Besson still made instruments at their Edgewater factory in North London I remember being told by their craftsmen to not use 'dish soap' in the water if your instrument is lacquered as opposed to silver-plated. Regularly, household detergents contain salts which can attack the coating over time and ultimately will cause the lacquer to flake. To be fair, B&H lacquer always was very poor. Also ensure that any flexible cleaning brushes are in good condition. Older ones can snap in tight tubes and bends, thereby requiring expensive professional repairs.
Thanks Tony. A really useful video, especially for a beginner such as me.
Thanks for this. I find that putting an old towel in the bottom of the bath/basin stops any scratching of tuba or bathtub.
Awesome video! But you should play it at the end! Btw how would you remove tarnish on a very old instrument?

I liked your humor about spilling your milk! I appreciate you taking the time to show us how to clean a bass horn!
