Great video! From a scale modelers perspective, it’s important to remember that smaller nozzle size is not always better. .2mm is as small as I’d recommend going for painting opaque colors. Anything smaller and you really need to use highly diluted colors otherwise you will run into clogging and other problems. For this reason I use my HP-B for painting 1/72 aircraft, and use the PS-771 for fine effects like post shade weathering where I need ultimate control but am spraying highly diluted paint. One other thing to keep in mind is that there is no one airbrush that can do everything well. Each airbrush has its application. One other thing that I learned over time was that smaller nozzle size does not always mean better lines. Head design is more important than nozzle size (which just tells you the size of the material that can pass through the nozzle). This is why the HP-B sprays more like an Eclipse than a Custom Micron. The heads are simply designed differently, with the Custom Micron and PS-771 being specifically designed for getting in close because of its head design and lower air speed. All in all, each airbrush has its application, but smaller isn’t always better.
23:24 note that all of the Patriot 105 parts are cross-compatible with each other and you can get the parts individually. Need a smaller paint cup? Swap the body out for the Arrow body. Don't like the PAC? Put a smaller needle and nozzle on a 105.
I am just getting started with airbrushing. I got several of the Master brushes. I also got to borrow a friends HP CS. With simple things like polishing the needled, sanding the sides of the trigger smooth and polishing that you can get the same or better results then the HP CS. I also learned that if you are gentle enough and understand what the nozzles do and how they work you can fine tune them as well with a light touch and some 2000 grit sandpaper to better match the caps.
Same. I have a Master G44 and it primes and sprays my resin prints perfectly. Some clogging in the nozzle, but only every once in a while, and only takes ~20 seconds to clear. I am going to buy an Iwata though. I've heard too many people say it's a good brush, and a logical next-step if you want a better fit / feel.

I just brought a paasche brush for my son who paints miniatures. It was the kit with three needles and nozzles. I got to try it last week and was very impressed especially the fan cap for large areas.
New to the channel. Great video. I'm just starting to get into airbrushing for my railroad modeling. I've been searching the net for info on the different airbrushes. It can be somewhat overwhelming with the huge array of options. I just needed to find your channel. Precise and to the point without bashing the cheaper brands. And having seen your work, the portraits and landscapes, there's no doubt you know what your talking about. I look forward to studying your other videos. Thank you.
I have the newer version of the xtreme patriot, while they haven't redesigned the PAC valve it does now ship with a blanking screw for people not wanting the feature.
Very good video - I started to learn airbrush in the late 80's on a single action Badger and then much later i bought an Aztek double action airbrush - lasted me ages and did some decent work with it. After about a 20 year gap ive had a cheapo chinese one to warm up and now gonna get an Iwata Eclipse and stick with that. I do sci fi prop weathering/painting and also poster style illustration using goauches. Fingers crossed it will be good/reliable enough as i dont have tons of free cash!
That is awesome- thank you for sharing! Yes, the eclipse should last you the rest of your life if you look after it. It's an excellent airbrush with very good control and reliability
I got a Kkmoon budget airbrush and compressor kit. (£30) After I polished the needle, the airbrush is outstanding. I feel I have no need to upgrade. The compressor... Its plastic, its noisey, it dances around the desk, but it works. I have a 10 gallon workshop compressor so I tend to use that.
got a master airbrush brand airbrush. Pretty cheap when i bought it but i do wanna upgrade my compressor to one with a tank and the airbrush to a harden steenback evolution. Im painting a lot of detailed models for 3d prints so i felt like i need an upgrade since my old one just cant do that pricise

Thanks for the review. You're different trigger response is understandable on the Talon. Notice the difference in the needle shape from other brands? The paint flows differently with Paasche brushes and at times you have to modify your thinning, depending on the type of paint. You get different paint flow with the trigger pull due to the needle shape. Your pressure may also differ from other airbrushes because of this. So if you've used other airbrushes, it will seem there is an issue with these even though there isn't. Once you get used to the differences, most people really like them. I watched this review, as I'm considering adding a Vision or Talon to my old VL for really fine work.
Maybe the needle shape is the issue I was having with the talons but like I was saying in my comment, I just couldn’t put my finger on what it was but I went to the PS 270 and I loved it mainly the angle on air intake I felt some good in my hand
@@theartworkshop Just a side note for the xtreme patriot. I have the xtreme arrow and changed the trigger to a regular patriot one, got a plug for the mac valve and changed the tail to a sotar without the adjuster and now love using it. got all the parts from usa airbrush supply for about 15 bucks.
Would like to suggest another brand name to add to your stable: the DeVilbis "DAGR", comparable to Patriot 105 and the Iwata Eclipse, but has interchangeable paint bowls. Also have found that Iwata HP plus handle, ( has that trigger stop feature ) that it will screw onto the Iwata Revolution and the Iwata Eclipse if you want to exchange. Thank you for your reviews about your collection, a worthwhile study. Cheers
Any opinions on the Harder & Steenbeck Evolution? I want to get either it or the Badger Patriot 105 for my first airbrush, but living in Europe it's hard to find replacement parts for the Badger. The 0.3mm conversion kit (which I am very interested in) is completely impossible to find here
I haven't tried the evolution yet but I will be buying it soon. H&S is such a great brand that I'll bet that it's a good airbrush. I don't think you can ever go wrong with harder and steenbeck.
I just bought the Iwata Revolution (still in the post at mo)...but it's not in this vid which is worrying...because I rate your reviews very highly...I was a professional muralist for 30 years strictly using brushes with acrylics (for speedy dry times) and then oils over the top...I worked internationally...I am retired now and bought my first (cheap) airbrush just for scale modelling (mostly WW2 aircraft) as a hobby...I am amazed by your quality of work which is obvious on your videos...When I was working in the art industry the last thing I would have done is reviews for the public...I was way too busy either working to deadlines or worrying about the next job...The art industry is fun but can be an intermittent vocation at times if you are lucky enough to cut a wage doing it...so little time to bring up the rear unless they can help you directly with projects

I see people say that for priming models, you need a 0.5mm needle. I got an awesome deal on a used Iwata eclipse cs that looks brand new. is it fine to run pre-thinned primer through it like stynlrez primer? i have some Vallejo flow improver to mix with it. or would i be better off getting a budget 0.5mm airbrush that is specifically for priming?

What about "Revell" airbrushes? They are being recommended everywhere for me and I even saw an old set at a fleamarket. I heard they were really bad, but that was like 20 years ago. I know they are not intended for acrylic paint - but can you put acrylic in it anyway?

Mark, the Eclipse I have is great except that the style I seem to have acquired for comfort i.e first finger joint on trigger rather the finger tip, is great for controlling the paint floe for me. Without spending a small fortune, have you tested any side feed airbrushes?
Yes, I have a gsi creos PS-276 that is excellent. Here is the US it usually goes for like $110. I haven't made a review of it yet bc i didn't think people would find it interesting. I'll use that one for the next airbrush review video.
Impressive collection. I was wondering, have you ever tried the HS Grafo T1? only been able 2 find 2 decent videos on that brush, and its a fair chunck of money to drop ona brusg just to try it out. I got a HS CR plus with a 0.2, creos 270 with a 0.2 and a creo 290. I just do minsures and scale models. so been on the fence about trying out the grafo with a 0.15 needle. og just but the need set for the Cr plus. I know, first world problems. :)
that's a great setup you've got! I need to get my hands on a creos 270 as well. The grafo T1 looks incredible and I will get it one day, but not any time soon. I'll try to review every airbrush I can, but it's getting expensive! the H&S Colani looks awesome too.
@@theartworkshop Reason why th eGrafo looks interesting is that from what I can telkl, it functions as a dual action brush with the "press down, pull back" liek you normally have to do. its jsut pull back. And the wide open paint cup look like a really nice feature for miniatures if you only want a couple of drops of paint, easy to clean for color changes. Barbatos Rex has a review on the Colani that he put up no that long ago. Look like a really nice brush if you got a disability in your hands.
@@theartworkshop oh I’m like your newest member but I’ve got the Creos 270 and I got to say I do love it, the angle of the air intake shaft is what I loved. It felt right in my hand. I’ve gotten numerous other air brushes like you do starting to go to more high-end detail brushes now.

I will be picking up the 771 I would like to get it I want to micron, but the cost is just a little bit out of my reach for the time being, so I'll be picking up at 7711. I understand it's just like to microns which would be awesome.
this is quick adapter set I use- amzn.to/47s6hvr It's a cheap one but works fine and comes with a few different quick adapters for different airbrushes. hope this helps!

I don't know if you know this or not, but the proper pronunciation of Iwata is more like eee-wah-tah, with the t in "ta" being a more hard T sound rather than sounding more like a D.
I got a Neo for $65 today at a Hobby Lobby, I was blown away that it was there for so cheap.
It's rare when I write....... But this deserves to .......and it's rare to find a really sincere approach to this subject done by a true artist....

Impressive collection. I was wondering, have you ever tried the HS Grafo T1? only been able 2 find 2 decent videos on that brush, and its a fair chunck of money to drop ona brusg just to try it out. I got a HS CR plus with a 0.2, creos 270 with a 0.2 and a creo 290. I just do minsures and scale models. so been on the fence about trying out the grafo with a 0.15 needle. og just but the need set for the Cr plus. I know, first world problems. :)
that's a great setup you've got! I need to get my hands on a creos 270 as well. The grafo T1 looks incredible and I will get it one day, but not any time soon. I'll try to review every airbrush I can, but it's getting expensive! the H&S Colani looks awesome too.
@@theartworkshop Reason why th eGrafo looks interesting is that from what I can telkl, it functions as a dual action brush with the "press down, pull back" liek you normally have to do. its jsut pull back. And the wide open paint cup look like a really nice feature for miniatures if you only want a couple of drops of paint, easy to clean for color changes. Barbatos Rex has a review on the Colani that he put up no that long ago. Look like a really nice brush if you got a disability in your hands.
@@theartworkshop oh I’m like your newest member but I’ve got the Creos 270 and I got to say I do love it, the angle of the air intake shaft is what I loved. It felt right in my hand. I’ve gotten numerous other air brushes like you do starting to go to more high-end detail brushes now.

I'll be getting the 270 this year to review for sure bc I need to start adding more gsi creos airbrushes to this channel. You can never go wrong with the ps-771 for a detail airbrush. It's just a rebranded micron to me.
