ThatOneShyguy The All-Range mode segments wouldn't work as well then. There's many situations where you have to move directly away from a telegraphed attack, and it wouldn't work with the classic All-Range Mode camera because it forces you to turn to their direction to see them, meaning you would already get clobbered because you didn't see their telegraph.
The game will have needed an entirely different game design. Just trying it on Co-op makes things like the spider enemies really hard to shoot. Hard as in cumbersome.
so much wasted potential and as Johnny points out, it really just has a learning curve you have to get around the only problem is the game is shorter than the learning period...
@@KairuHakubi Bigger problem is that they ask players to learn these unintuitive controls but the game never does anything unique with that gimmick. No moment in my gameplay I felt that "Wow, using motion controls in this section is MUCH better than if I'd used normal controls!" The motion controls + view switching make the whole experience all needlessly convoluted.
@@KairuHakubi The game is shorter than its full learning curve, just like basically all the good Star Fox games... just because Zero's learning curve involved new technology, does not make the game bad. In Star Fox 64, I had a terrible time my first run. I still have a hard time sometimes, because I just prefer to play other Star Fox games, Zero included. You're *supposed* to replay the game, this initially being incentivized by new routes, but followed by things like medals.
This game's background gives me a lot of vibes for when they released Kid Icarus Uprising on the 3DS. I mean, think about it. - Series reboot - Anime shorts (in Fox's case, just 1) - Divided opinions on control scheme - Made by Platinum (in KI's case, somewhat) - Poor sales Kinda sad that the very thing fans bemoan them for (too much Mario, Zelda, Pokémon) is actually what helps keep them afloat since not many folks seem interested in anything else Nintendo does...
Considering that Star Fox Zero sold EVEN LESS than Star Fox Command... this game probably will be the last one. Miyamoto forcing motion controls into the game kind of contributed to how it was.
Some are more inclined to blame Platinum Games, though I feel that they put into a LOT of effort into this game, which makes me feel that that hate is a bit unwarranted.
@@alvarochaves1999 Crash Bandicoot 4 retconned all of the games Wrath of Cortex onwards, Nintendo could do the same thing with whatever game in the series they want, if they even want make another game, that is.
In a way I'm kind of glad they didn't. It means that each player ending choice carries its own weight and importance instead of making a "right" ending and many "wrong" endings.
Star Fox (1993): "This game is amaaazing." Star Fox 64 (1997): "Hey guys! Do you remember Star Fox?!" *Most successful release at this point* *Three failed attempts at branching out from a sales perspective... then they came back in 2011* Star Fox 64 3D (2011): "You guys still love classic Star Fox... right?!" Star Fox Zero (2016): "The last game was a tepid success, it only sold half of what Adventures made, but you guys are fine with buying Star Fox classic again... right?!" *Game goes on to sell less copies than Star Fox Command...* I just think they don't really know what to do with the franchise. Even if the Zero was held off till the NX I doubt it would have garnered new audiences because the remake on the 3DS didn't even sell a million copies compared to the heights of Star Fox 64.
The problem is Star Fox has gameplay that can’t really be innovated or changed without seeming gimmicky, all you can do is just make better levels. I’m pretty sure Nintendo knows this which is why they’ve experimented so much with it with varying degrees of success. Whether or not they will try to experiment more with the next Star Fox or decide to just stick with the same old remains to be seen.
I would rather Nintendo just drop Star Fox 64 entirely and build a completely new game from whole cloth. When possible, they should use the story and characters from Star Fox in completely different ways. Hell, it's time for a completely new development staff to tackle it, people who won't feel an obligation to stick to the classics. Hey, it's certainly better than releasing the exact same game over again.
Logan smith Honestly at this point I think most fans of the Star Fox series could care less about if a new game was like 64. We all want something new, something bold, something risky, that not only expands upon the characters but the world and brings Star Fox back into the mainstream. Think of Metroid Prime, Tomb Raider, or Breath of The Wild; a complete change in genre to previous titles but have become massively successful, THAT is what Star Fox needs.
MattTheCompletionist Thank you, this makes my day. Alien Soldier is in my top five favorite games of all time, and beyond that, it's called Alien _Soldier_ so you'd think it would have a good martial leitmotif! Oh, and cool Jontron thumbnail!
What's this? A Review of this game that doesn't simply bash it because it has Gyro controls? One that doesn't bash it because it's a reboot of 64 (I didn't think they needed to reboot the series again, personally)? One that actually states that you don't *have* to check the bottom screen all of the fucking time just to shoot things in most stages? Truly, we are in Purgatory! But all jokes aside, this was a good review to watch-it tackled the good, the bad, and other aspects of the game (I'll give a hint as to say don't bother with Target View unless you need to get a quick peek at whatever you main objective is) without coming off as critical for the sake of being critical.
You know purgatory is as bad as hell, right XD It just has a time-limited punishment instead of an endless one. Nevertheless... That's why I watch Johnny's videos. He's honest with his thoughts and doesn't just trash things without looking to see if there is any worth behind the bad.
I feel that this game is wasted potential. why does it have to be 64 again? when they already remade it on the 3DS?. they could've continued the cannon by either skipping Command or using Command's default ending. I don't think Zero is bad. but this could've been a lot more. especially since this is supposed to be the series's come back after a 10 year absence.
Command Default ending was Peppy as a General, Falco and Slippy quiting and Krystal ended up with Panther meanwhile Fox is wandering alone in the space, thats sad even for a mercenary, i think that the better solution is porting this to Switch fixing the controls, the graphics.
Actually the cannon ending for command is Krystal goes back to Fox and their kid slippy’s kid one of their friends and falco becomes the new Star Fox team
Even though the default ending for Command is Krystal doing a 180, and just goes back to pretty much slutting it up with Panther, leaving Fox broken in tears? Like, pretty sure I saw your comment on the other Star Fox video of Johnny's, defending Krystal from being hated, which guessing that default ending did not help her whatsoever back then. So honestly for the sake of keeping her from being called bad, it be best to skip/write off Command being the continuation of Assault. But yes, the whole making of a new Star Fox game could have been better than this, either more to this game with also the option to do away with motion controls entirely, or a proper continuation of the previous games.
If that ever happens, which it won't, then there needs to be a few more changes than just control. The game's camera and design were specifically meant for this control scheme and not having the gyroscope aiming would make all range mode segments, especially boss fights, borderline impossible.
Honestly, I think they should have made a proper "apology game" for Command, but a reboot to get people back in the series could have worked… In concept. I think at this point, people were actually kind of sick of the first game and 64's plotline being retold. Especially seeing how fans stick up for Adventures and Assault nowadays, viewing them in more positive lights. There are probably multiple factors on this game's failure of a performance, which may lead to Star Fox vanishing again. Oh well, there's some fan-created stuff out there at least, that Nintendo may or may not try to file against.
SeiMadou Pupuru yeah it's a no win scenario imo. The Star Fox fan base is as fractured as the Sonic fanbase but sells worse because it is a smaller franchise. Until Nintendo can establish a solid fan base these games will fail regardless of quality.
@@logansmith2703 And just like the Sonic franchise, devs don't seem to know what to do with the franchise and thus keep nostalgia baiting fans just to keep the franchise afloat
i still love this game and it sure as hell isn't the worst star fox game(that still goes to command and imo adventures outside look.) but it definitely has it's flaws like slowdown(that was bad to me with the vehicles/dodria boss fight.),control(that we're a more cramp inducing kid icarus to me if you were off even a little.),level design(didn't mind the similar story as the series outside adventures has reused story/planets before and mario, pokemon, especially zelda, animal crossing and occasionally kirby are worse with rehashing stuff.) and the short length even for a star fox game(could've used a few more levels.) that the series future should fix not being on a console that was unfortunately doomed from the start. it is my favorite style for the star fox world along with assault/64(platinum games did such a great job and love how bayonetta is the one who brought fox mcloud to attention again.:3),my favorite nintendo promotional material alongside kid icarus uprising(love the commercials & the battle begins so much.:3) and would love to see a sequel mix elements of star fox 2(like have star wolf use andross's portal technology to cause trouble while fox searches for his father since he's alive in this version and bring in 2's pilots.) and assault.(just with better ground control as they do have interest in bringing krystal back, just don't have her replace peppy and do more with her outside love interest to fox/more of her psychic abilities.)
This was my first Star Fox game and I absolutely loved it. As soon as I beat it I went back to unlock all the extra routes (that could of been because I was renting it and was under a time limit, but my brother bought it a few days later so my point still stands). I will admit, yes, the controls took some getting used to, but that didn't bother me. I have a hard time remembering standard controls that aren't menu-based like an RPG, so this was no different to me. The other reason why I have no gripe with the controls is because once I learned them, it felt so rewarding. I felt a sense of accomplishment when I was finally able to use everything to its full potential without really thinking about it. I know a lot of people think the controls should be the easiest part about a game, but I think there's some learning to be had there too. The immense scope of everything and knowing that you could confidently tackle it head on was more than enough for me. And, while this is unrelated to the controls, this game is an absolute spectacle to watch. My dad, who's a big Star Wars fan, stopped multiple times to watch me play, commenting on how the dog fights looked amazing and how he would have to give it a shot himself sometime. This coming from the man who plays nothing but racing simulators. I think Star Fox Zero is well worth the purchase, but you have to approach it with an open mind.
Since there are situations specifically designed around using the gyro controls to aim in one direction while flying in another, an option to removed them wouldn't work too well unless they also changed or removed those parts of the game.
It's strange that they don't since they did in the 3DS N64 Zelda remakes. And in those games, most PREFER the gyro. So why they couldn't do that here and tweak the gyro intended parts of the gameplay, I have no idea.
Because gyro controls in 64 3D was not necessary when the original controls were there just fine. Zelda is just "plant your feet and aim for two seconds" which you can't possibly fuck up with additional gyro controls. *All range mode* is why they didn't turn off the gyro. They intended you to be aiming COMPLETELY INDEPENDENTLY of your ship's movement and that was their answer. It does end up fixing 64 3D's gyro controls but to some it adds new problems.

Ted's Magic only happends wen he doesn't want the thing to actually happen, like the Majora's Mask and Gen 3 Remakes, so he can get pummeled by everyone that did say that it would happen.
Everyone makes a big deal about the controls and avoids the main issue with the game. Yes, the controls can get messy, but even if they were better, the big problem still remains: it's literally just Star Fox 64. I know Star Fox 64 is just a reboot of the original, but the gameplay in 64 was updated and refreshing, while Zero is just a new coat of paint.
Personally, I found the all-range sections in Zero more engaging than in 64 precisely because of the motion controls. Instead of constantly looping around and trying to get a shot in before the enemy leaves my line of sight and I have to do it all over again, I can just glance down, aim with the gamepad and BAM. Found myself literally shouting "Boo-yah!" first time I pulled that off.
Looking back at every Review for Star Fox Zero I can certainly say this one is the most calm & well thought out review. Most Reviews I find always have trouble explaining themselves with over blown complaints that might as well be nit-picks, some making such Over the top & over-exaggerated Claims like "Miyamoto would be ashamed of this" when it's very clearly not the case, this was a very well made review with valid points & great explanations & overall it was the most fun to watch.
I haven't played Star Fox Zero, so I can't give my opinion from experience, but from looking at it, I feel this is why Shigeru Miyamoto *needs* to retire. I feel that Miyamoto both adds and sucks away creativity from his projects. After the first Galaxy game, the Mario series has become stale, at least aesthetically (games are still great). Star Fox Zero being another retelling of the Lylat Wars disappointed me, especially since I would have liked to have seen something after Assault, though I do understand rebooting after a decade. The GamePad controls, to me, really hurt the game. Like I said, I haven't experienced them for myself, so I can't say if they work or not, but having the basis of the controls be motion-controlled felt like a detriment. Truth is, not everyone's going to adapt to this control scheme. Sure, you'll have a good number of people who will adjust, but you'll have just as many not be able to adapt. It's a serious double-edged sword. Don't get me wrong, Miyamoto does deserve the respect he has for making a lot of the great Nintendo franchises were have today, but I think he's got to the point of stagnation. I think Star Fox Zero's incredibly divisive reception leaves the series in a possible state of limbo. I'd love to see another Star Fox game, but we'll just have to wait and see with the NX. Can we *fucking* see that shit, Nintendo? >_>
Honestly after seeing Miyamoto's recent works & huge involvements in recent Nintendo games lately that are either hated or got polarizing receptions, (Skyward Sword, 3D Land, Sticker Star, StarFox Zero) I honestly have very little faith on how good the next 3D Mario game for the NX will be, since he's the one who's developing the game & the fact that he said it will be "a new *quirky* way to play Mario" immediately sends off a red flag to alot of fans, indicating he'll most likely put in shoe horn gimmicky motion controls that will no doubt cause the game to either be hated or very divisive. That & he'll most likely give the game the sticker star treatment by not having no new or unique enemies, bosses, locations & npcs, but only have enemies, bosses & locations from the NSMB series & only have generic toads as npcs.
Jonnathan Sosa Yeah, that makes me worried. I get that he wants to give people new experiences, and I can appreciate wanting to do new things, but there's a point where you have to look at what you have and ask yourself "Is this really the best idea?" Not being able to do that shows lack of constraint, and I don't want to see such a legendary man in the gaming industry fall to this.
Hub Pie I really respect Miyamoto as a developer, but I basically entirely agree with you. Maybe not retire, but move to a hands off role where he isn't directly involved with design decisions anymore.
I think Zero's controls alienated way too many people. Nobody asked for those controls. What most people wanted was an HD on-rails traditional new adventure (not rehashed story) to play. Not StarFox 64 HD With Motion Controls.
But Miyamoto wanted motion controls, and such a legend as him should _always_ be obeyed. He's never made a bad decision before... (Looks at Twilight Princess and Paper Mario: Sticker Star...)
***** Miyamoto also wanted Link to use a gun in Link's Crossbow Training for Wii, and Aonuma told him "No". Not because Miyamoto says is does it mean it's good.
Giordan Diodato Mario Kart has been doing it for years. I don't see the problem. There hasn't been a game like what many of us want in 19 years. Need I remind you how miserable Zero's sales were? And it's not the Wii U's fault. Smash sold well, Splatoon sold well. Zero doesn't sell because nobody wants to play like that. I wanted to play the game. StarFox 64 was the first game I ever owned. The controls alone turned me off from Zero entirely, and I know many people like that.
Honestly I found Star Fox Guard to be more entertaining. Star Fox Zero wasn't bad by any means, but of course the controls could have easily been better as traditional controls. Meanwhile, Guard actually makes a great use of the Gamepad, has simple yet effective design (thanks in part to the tower-defense play). and is $5 at Gamestop.
and I thought it was sad I got it for 20 you know what's REALLY sad? I got Starlink for 8 bucks and _it is a fine Starfox game_ like seriously fine. maybe not 60 bucks fine, but it was worth 40
I'm surprised you didn't bring up the co-op mode. It helps with the experience so much. The Pro Controller controls the Arwing and the GamePad controls the lasers. I use it all the time whenever playing Zero.
Is it really too much to ask for Nintendo to stop using these motion control gimmicks? This is the main reason I stopped buying Nintendo consoles... because I just want the simplicity of turning on the game and playing it. I don't want to spend two hours wrapping my head around an awkward control scheme. PS4 and Xbox... sure their first party titles aren't as unique or abundant. But at least they keep shit like this as a minimum. They give you a controller and that's pretty much it.
+zRexx Are we the same person? This is exactly how I feel about Nintendo and why I don't buy anymore Nintendo consoles anymore. I'm tired of that damn motion control gimmick.
Luckily the handhelds stopped fucking around with gimmicks, most of the touch screen is kept basic and easy to understand, and games that use it use it a lot better then they originally did. I originally had a Wii U but... after seeing that they couldn't stop forcing their shitty gimmicks into every first party title, and nobody making third party titles because the system is completely held back in comparison, I left ship too.
Another outstanding review, Johnny. I think Star Fox: Zero had so much potential, and ultimately, I still very much enjoy this game! Dynamically? It's the best game in the series. Platinum Games always delivers in gameplay, dynamics, sound production, level design and musical quality. But I do feel the Gamepad holds the game back. It should have been optional, not the main focus, and that does hurt this game in a sense. I, personally, adjusted to it quite quickly. But, I know it isn't something everyone wants to experience when playing the game. I so enjoyed this game, but, I do think Star Fox 64 has the edge over Zero overall. But, damn, to me this is still a close second.
As much as I agree with a lot of these points, I absolutely love this game. I get that not everybody wants to devote all the time necessary to mastering the controls, but once you do, it really does feel incredible. I would say this game is on par with if not better than Star Fox 64. It has so much more content, you can select any level at any time, making ribbon hunting much less frustrating, and the completion bonuses are really nice, too.
***** No innovation? The form changing is seemless and extremely satisfying, they take a completely new spin on the story, you get to battle Star Wolf several times, each battle having some new detail that makes it different and more challenging than the last, and the controls are completely new. What about this game ISN'T innovative?
***** You obviously haven't even played the game or even seen it beyond maybe watching the first few episodes of a let's play. So... I'm done with that one.
I consider Assault at least just as good as 64, but for different reasons and for some of the same reasons, but StarFox 2 is my favorite, I didn't like Zero as much as any of them, in my book, it was better than Command or 643D despite being fatal for the series.
Z-95SkyHunter Assault is really good, I just feel like it focused a bit too much on the on-foot segments which make up the majority of the game. Though I will say that no game has ever done the Landmaster better than Assault. I'm still not a fan of Zero's Landmaster, it's way too clunky for my taste, especially in all-range mode, but I certainly wouldn't call Zero "fatal" by any stretch of the imagination. I really do think that any dedicated Star Fox fan who has been waiting for a new Star Fox 64 can really get what they're looking for in Zero as long as they're willing to put the time into getting used to the controls. Seriously, nothing is more satisfying than switching between walker and arwing in order to maneuver to another area and get closer to the action. I think the walker allows you to get closer to the action like Assault tried with the on-foot gameplay, but without making you feel as defenseless and vulnerable. Easily my favorite mission is the Satellite mission for Zoness where you get to play the mission in an arwing. It was really cool to speed through the stage that was originally played as slowly and stealthily as possible.
Platinum games is one of my favorite developers, But that damn Wii U gamepad ruined 2 of their games for me. Starfox Zero and Wonderful101. Both with great potential, but plagued with unnecessarily frustrating controls.
I didn't have any problem with the controls in Wonderful 101. Sure, the game had a learning curve, but that's nothing new for a game made by Platinum. No one was dishing kicks and punches and dodging like a pro the first time they played Bayonetta, now did they?
"wait for a discount version, I see it hover around the $30-40 range" Fun fact, not two months ago I saw about 20 copies of Star Fox Zero at FiveBelow for a crisp $5. How far we've fallen
That's what happens when you force a control scheme that not everyone gets accustomed to. And this is coming from someone who likes the motion controls in Zero.
You forgot to mention the branching paths. In 64 when you choose a path you are stuck with it until you beat the game. In Zero you can just go back and sideways whenever you want. It ruins the replayability
Wow, this is probably the most fair review of the game I've seen so far. Every review has either been "BLARRGH THE CONTROL IS DIFFERENT THEREFORE IT'S BAD" or "BLARRGH EVERYONE WHO HATES THE CONTROLS JUST NEEDS TO GIT GUD!" Johnny though, well he handles it very calmly and acknowledges that the controls are awkward at first and in a few areas will stay awkward but you do get used to them and gets better as you learn how to use them properly.
Really good video Johnny and Fun fact: the people who made Star Fox Zero The battle begins (Witt studio) also made Attack on Titan and Seraph of the End
When it came to the motion controls I ended up spending 80-90% of the time looking at the bottom screen and bringing it up to the main screen. I mean, if you don't mind the limits in your vision without some brief glances to the larger screen, you can pretty much play the game as if it's an arcade gun shooter.
Gotta say I don't usually find these reviews too funny (but I still enjoy hearing your opinion, otherwise I wouldn't be here) but those last couple shots where you were dressed real funky had me laughing out loud.
Nintendo mishandled the "announcement" of the NX. They mentioned they were working on it two years ago and that KILLED any chance the wiiu had to rise back. And now people are getting tired because nintendo, after 2 years, still refuses to show anything.
Arkham Knight It's more inevitably so they will reveal it... but Monday's are your best friend cus Nintendo is more of a early week news kinda thing and the direct may be on a Wednesday or Tuesday they are not a fan of the weekends...
This game and franchise deserves new life on the Nintendo Switch with either a port of this game or a new mainline StarFox game for the Nintendo Switch.
Sister Location is probably after that. But yeah his original Sonic Boom review is my least favorite review he's done & it showcases my biggest problem with him.
What I don't get about SFZ being another retread of the Andross invasion story is that it seemed like Nintendo was planning to do something different with it before they just chose to pull back from it at the last minute. It honestly would've been very interesting had they actually committed to it. Hear me out. During The Battle Begins, Pepper implied that there was a terrible secret that he couldn't tell Fox and only Peppy could know, and Peppy promised that he would keep him away from. When you do arrive on Venom, Pepper explained to Fox why Andross had to be exiled for his dangerous experiments, particularly his teleportation technology, but you could tell that Pepper wasn't telling the whole truth about it (his whole shtick about bringing "peace to the galaxy" sounded suspicious). And when you do fight Andross, he very much believes that Pepper was in the wrong for imprisoning him on this dwarf planet Venom, and despises how Fox and James were allying themselves with Pepper. It looked like Miyamoto was playing around with that cultural Japanese belief of the rivalry between dogs and monkeys (much like how we see dogs and cats as enemies), and wanted to do something more nuanced with the worn out story that was previously told years prior. Maybe Corneria really isn't as guiltfree as we were initially led to believe this time. Maybe Pepper was initially complicit with what was going on in the background as long as Corneria could benefit. Maybe Andross had a point somewhere that got lost during development. Fox himself may have become a bit doubtful towards blindingly trusting Pepper which may recontextualize his decision to turn down his offer to join the army. Unfortunately, it became clear that Nintendo wasn't willing to go down this path, instead just doing the same beats as SF64 but twisted around slightly. Just another massive bit of wasted potential for this game.
Well, I loved SFZ. The controls were the highlight of the game, especially in all range mode. All the tedious jockeying to get behind and enemy is gone. It's really refreshing. I say this as someone that's never really liked motion controls and was seriously considering cancelling my preorder. The motions controls are dead-on accurate.
Seeing the actual realistic flying of Bayonetta makes me want Star Fox to go the hyper realistic route, Not unlike some of the original SNES art, (Just as models instead of puppets.) Something about the realistic graphics especially the Nova bomb just look sweet.
I find it a massive shame that Starfox Zero doesn't pay homage to its history. I suppose that's a given being a reboot, but Perhaps a few hidden easter eggs here and there wouldn't hurt too much, right? Well, I wasn't aware that Fire and Ice is out. Wonder if it's an actual improvement compared to Rise of Lyric.
I'd like to point out that the top SF0 speed runner, who knows this game in and out, has major issues with the controls and feels that they are very limiting. I also recommend to anyone who reads this comment to watch Mark Brown's video on SF0. Johnny forgot to mention that the aiming reticle in SF0 is purposefully wrong on the TV, so the game will try to force you to look at the game pad.
Even if I don't always agree with Johnny's reviews, I never doubt his sincerity of the conclusions he draws. Thanks for the Zero review. Very funny ending to this vid, to boot.
That ending...ow. Getting hit _IN THE HEAD_ by that amount of solid plastic hurts. I can't blame Johnny for being stunned for a moment. Next time, throw it at the chest or something; it's not as painful, and the vital organs tend to be located under multiple layers of skin, muscle, bone and, well, fat, unlike the brain, which only has skin, a solid skull, and not much room in which to 'safely' wobble.
He's not stunned, he's trying not to laugh. And as someone who has taken a 360 case to the head before, they really aren't that painful. There's a bit of a sting, but nothing comes of it.
I still think doing a reboot was incredibly silly when you consider 64 3D. It was way too soon as the original/64 plot already got an excellent face-lift as one of the best action games on the 3DS. You could have used that game as the reboot point or like you said you could have just ignored Command which everyone hated anyway. Despite the new features, for me it's basically the same game only less fun so there's not much point to it. More massive fans of the series will probably get something out of it and have already played it and formed their own opinions I'm sure, but even then a lot of them were disappointed with the controls and yet another reboot.
Re-release for the Switch with online, touch up the 60FPS and no mandatory Motion Controls. Guarantee you this game does better on the Switch. Like other Wii U games.
Oh come on Johnny, why didn't you adress the tribute to Sataru Iwata at the end of the game? Do we have to play the role of the "Elephant in the room" for ya or something?
It's great to see that you enjoyed the game, i never played but i could see the passion behind the project of Star Fox Zero, i don't mind those gimmicks(when they aren't ridiculous of course), but i think that having an option to use a tradition control scheme would have been much better, how about a Megaman X marathon John?
You know, with these updated graphics, the transforming arwing reminds me of a veritech. Actually, given the updated aesthetics, the blocky ships, the beam cannons, the missiles, Zero reminds me a lot of Robotech in general.
The fact that every fucking boss is all range mode is such a huge downgrade from 64. The bosses in 64 were still enjoyable to fight without the need for a clunky view and unintuitive control. That final boss in Zero especially is atrocious and i dont know anybody who had fun with it.
This game has a tight learning curve, after a couple missions you'll get used to it. This is one instance that, much like Starfox 64, training mode will be your friend when it comes to learning the controls. You could switch screens with the - button (much like Wind Waker HD). I didn't do that since I was getting too focused on playing that switching screens might cause me to slip up.
I was NOT aware you could switch screens with the select button! The game tells you nothing about that! Why?!
Nintendo, that's why. (I miss physical manuals.)
Did you read the Manuel? No one ever reads the Manuel.
Manuel was a good guy...
More like the Star Fox 64 series.
I am sorry Johnny, I also played the game without knowing until Jirard's review
The dating is real. One day, people will probably forget the Switch was called NX.
Yep they have
Alpha AX pretty much yeah
I haven’t. It’s like the Wii’s name: the prototype’s designation definitely sounded better, but everyone’s used to saying the official name now
That’s the kind of tidbit that will always be hanging out in the back of my mind.
Peppridge Farms remembers
Well, shit, now that I look at it, the Switch reveal was *12 days* after this review.
I was just about to comment that, but you barely beat me by 2 years
I'm sure it's been said by now..but you can swap the screens.
You can press a button to display the cockpit on the TV screen.
You can??????
I still liked it better when aiming and viewing your surroundings was on the same screen.
Yeah with the minus button you can swap the screens at will.
You didn't bother looking in the comments. Johnny mentioned it.
you mean that comment he posted after mine? Yeah, I didn't see it cos it wasnt there.
"At the risk of dating this video immediately, where's the NX?"
Can't blame you for trying ;-)
That fucking ending segment made me laugh so hard
He probably reacted the way he did because Elliot hit him with the corner of the box. lol
That's GOTTA hurt. Lmao
Can't wait for the review
when johnny gets all the chaos emeralds
OF COURSE!

They should have given people the option to use the pro controller with the classic control setup.
Dosen't work with the game.
It can, but only if you're playing co-op mode
Yeah that was a missed opportunity.
That ending was gold
Boom Johnny is best Johnny

Hi nitro rad
There has never been a better ending to any of your videos. Whoever threw that was trying to kill.

Tails Doll is trying to murder Johnny via bad games again.
Star Fox: Hey, we’re back out of hibernation.
Shiggy: Give Star Fox some motion controls.
Star Fox: Nah, I’ll just die instead.
so much wasted potential
and as Johnny points out, it really just has a learning curve you have to get around
the only problem is the game is shorter than the learning period...
@@KairuHakubi Bigger problem is that they ask players to learn these unintuitive controls but the game never does anything unique with that gimmick. No moment in my gameplay I felt that "Wow, using motion controls in this section is MUCH better than if I'd used normal controls!" The motion controls + view switching make the whole experience all needlessly convoluted.
ehhh i mean.. the stuff with the little probe.. ... well that wasnt fun, but it was unique
@@hahasamian8010 well if that's the case then it doesn't work very well since the little gyrocopter missions slow everything the fuck down

DragonShade100 yes the game is fun and IN A GOOD WAY
Ben Link It may have been easy as heck, but yes, it was very fun to speed through
TehJellyLord At least it's short.
This game's background gives me a lot of vibes for when they released Kid Icarus Uprising on the 3DS.
I mean, think about it.
- Series reboot
- Anime shorts (in Fox's case, just 1)
- Divided opinions on control scheme
- Made by Platinum (in KI's case, somewhat)
- Poor sales
Kinda sad that the very thing fans bemoan them for (too much Mario, Zelda, Pokémon) is actually what helps keep them afloat since not many folks seem interested in anything else Nintendo does...

It's not bias if it's reasonable hate
I Loved Kid Icarus Uprising, but that's because I bought the retail copy that came with the 3ds stand. Without that, It hurts my hands just to play
There is an extreme bias, for whatever reason people expect the worst from them even though there's tons of comanys that do way worse
Thank you Rick
Rick Harrison Because Nintendo is the worst currently
Considering that Star Fox Zero sold EVEN LESS than Star Fox Command... this game probably will be the last one. Miyamoto forcing motion controls into the game kind of contributed to how it was.
I respect the guy but I wonder how much more will the guy drag Nintendo down by..
Is it fair to blame Miyamoto alone?
+BigBossMan538 Based on all the interviews sharing his thoughts, I would say mostly so..
Some are more inclined to blame Platinum Games, though I feel that they put into a LOT of effort into this game, which makes me feel that that hate is a bit unwarranted.
+Dragonpit Nah, man. The production values more than vouch for Platinum games.
Now how much longer shall we wait for another Star Fox and/or F-Zero game?

That's one of the main reasons why Zero sold like crap, and Star Fox 64 3D is just a 3DS port.
Apparently Star Fox 64 3D didn't even sell that well. This was their chance, and they blew it by shoehorning in motion controls.

I'm wondering why Nintendo didn't pick a Canonical Ending to Star Fox Command like what Sega did with Shadow The Hedgehog
I'm glad they didn't XD Makes things feel way too messy. Plus most endings were either bad or too final for the franchise.
At least you didn't feel cheated out of your choices with Command like you did with Shadow. Both games are average anyway, so meh.
In a way I'm kind of glad they didn't. It means that each player ending choice carries its own weight and importance instead of making a "right" ending and many "wrong" endings.
To be frank, it's probably because they don't want that game to be canon at all :P
Naxiro Dark That's kind of worse in a way actually in all honesty.
Star Fox (1993): "This game is amaaazing."
Star Fox 64 (1997): "Hey guys! Do you remember Star Fox?!"
*Most successful release at this point*
*Three failed attempts at branching out from a sales perspective... then they came back in 2011*
Star Fox 64 3D (2011): "You guys still love classic Star Fox... right?!"
Star Fox Zero (2016): "The last game was a tepid success, it only sold half of what Adventures made, but you guys are fine with buying Star Fox classic again... right?!"
*Game goes on to sell less copies than Star Fox Command...*
I just think they don't really know what to do with the franchise. Even if the Zero was held off till the NX I doubt it would have garnered new audiences because the remake on the 3DS didn't even sell a million copies compared to the heights of Star Fox 64.
If they want another Star Fox, it needs a *drastic* change in direction, far greater than mere control remappings.
Then you also have to factor in how the fans react when it ISN'T like 64. It's essentially a no win scenario
I finished this recently and thought it was fantastic. Went in with low expectations and they were wildly surpassed.

Because command F'd up the timeline
really because of the ten year absence I understamd why they wanted to play it safe
Now Johnny has to do a Kirby marathon and have Ted as a special guest.
"If only they re-released on the Nintendo Switch with better control"
If that ever happens, which it won't, then there needs to be a few more changes than just control. The game's camera and design were specifically meant for this control scheme and not having the gyroscope aiming would make all range mode segments, especially boss fights, borderline impossible.
It may happen, but is not very likely.
Motion controls should've just been optional. Was really looking forward to this one.
I think Star Fox Zero is well worth the purchase, but you have to approach it with an open mind.
perhaps if they gave an option to disable gyroscope controls, the game could have done better.
Probably.
Since there are situations specifically designed around using the gyro controls to aim in one direction while flying in another, an option to removed them wouldn't work too well unless they also changed or removed those parts of the game.
***** Sounds like Miyamoto

Hub Pie miyamoto is planning to retire I hear, but he's trying to get Nintendo ready for when he does
Hub Pie I really respect Miyamoto as a developer, but I basically entirely agree with you.
Maybe not retire, but move to a hands off role where he isn't directly involved with design decisions anymore.
I still come back this review just to laugh at the fact that Johnny was asking for an NX reveal 12 days before the Switch trailer.
12:29 Bro This dude is the reason why the Switch got announced about a Week after this upload
Not because Miyamoto says is does it mean it's good.
you mean a repetitive on-rails shooter?
Giordan Diodato Mario Kart has been doing it for years. I don't see the problem. There hasn't been a game like what many of us want in 19 years. Need I remind you how miserable Zero's sales were? And it's not the Wii U's fault. Smash sold well, Splatoon sold well. Zero doesn't sell because nobody wants to play like that. I wanted to play the game. StarFox 64 was the first game I ever owned. The controls alone turned me off from Zero entirely, and I know many people like that.
TS Prism again, why not change up the gameplay like Assault? Don't you get tired of playing the same thing over and over?
Honestly I found Star Fox Guard to be more entertaining. Star Fox Zero wasn't bad by any means, but of course the controls could have easily been better as traditional controls. Meanwhile, Guard actually makes a great use of the Gamepad, has simple yet effective design (thanks in part to the tower-defense play). and is $5 at Gamestop.
I'm in on that sentiment too.
I thought Star Fox Guard was so much fun!
I got this game used at GameStop for 2 actual dollars, and it was totally worth it!
I got the game brand new for 5 dollars at GameStop. It was really cool, and definitely worth the money, but kind of sad at the same time...
and I thought it was sad I got it for 20
you know what's REALLY sad? I got Starlink for 8 bucks and _it is a fine Starfox game_
like seriously fine. maybe not 60 bucks fine, but it was worth 40
I'm surprised you didn't bring up the co-op mode. It helps with the experience so much. The Pro Controller controls the Arwing and the GamePad controls the lasers. I use it all the time whenever playing Zero.
After Sonic Boom: Fire and Ice, you and Elliot should review Sister Location now that its out now

hyperactive pidgeon is the precise word I was looking for when thinking of this game, thank you 😂😂😂
i love the controls, flying foward and shooting anywhere else is a unique feature
Skyward Sword is unplayable for me
You do know most of the games of the Wii U are not gimmick focus... Right?
they give you controllers and that's. And VR. And motion controllers. And day one patches.
You should do a ratchet and clank marathon.
oh that ending scene. thank you for the outtakes at the end. it was sweet.
Still believe that if this game was rereleased on the switch today, this game would be alot better.

***** My point exactly. Goodnight.
*GIT GUD!*
nonlegend I love Nintendo but did they really think this style of control would catch on at all, it's utterly shit
What's wrong with Wonderful 101? It had fine controls.
I didn't have any problem with the controls in Wonderful 101. Sure, the game had a learning curve, but that's nothing new for a game made by Platinum. No one was dishing kicks and punches and dodging like a pro the first time they played Bayonetta, now did they?
Anime Fan on Prom Night I dunno it worked well with Fatal Frame 5

Fun fact, not two months ago I saw about 20 copies of Star Fox Zero at FiveBelow for a crisp $5.
Nintendo, please learn digital, right sticks, and different fonts for the love of fuck
Love Star Fox Zero. Once I got used to the controls, it all clicked, great game!
Wow, this is probably the most fair review of the game I've seen so far. Every review has either been "BLARRGH THE CONTROL IS DIFFERENT THEREFORE IT'S BAD" or "BLARRGH EVERYONE WHO HATES THE CONTROLS JUST NEEDS TO GIT GUD!"
Johnny though, well he handles it very calmly and acknowledges that the controls are awkward at first and in a few areas will stay awkward but you do get used to them and gets better as you learn how to use them properly.
"Where is that NX reveal" 20 days later it showed up.
I busted out laughing when the game hit his head that echoed so beautifully and his reaction was priceless
RESIDENT EVIL. Only you can stop Umbrella Johnny.
That's...actually a pretty good idea.
They aren't super long and complex games, and he has played through them in the past.
Daniel Willett I give that idea 5 (in a Nemesis voice) sttttaaarrrssss.
Nemesis is fine but if you went Crimson Head on me then I'm afraid the expletives would come out,
You got your wish
You know what would've made for a good unlockable ship?
Samus' Gunship.
E.O.W. I think it's due to a marketing thing after all when they reveal NX will you care for anything coming out for 3DS at this point...
Nintendo's Going To Die If They Don't Reveal It Soon. How The Fuck Are They Going To Release That In MARCH When The Public Has Never EVER Heard Of It?
Arkham Knight It's more inevitably so they will reveal it... but Monday's are your best friend cus Nintendo is more of a early week news kinda thing and the direct may be on a Wednesday or Tuesday they are not a fan of the weekends...
that weird moment when uncharted 4 sold less the splatoon
I'm pretty sure its only been a year and some months since Iwata announce the NX.
You should do a pikmin marathon
I second that.
Third.
I would say Fourth, but there’s only 3 games. We don’t talk about the 3DS game
Sup
heyo
This game and franchise deserves new life on the Nintendo Switch with either a port of this game or a new mainline StarFox game for the Nintendo Switch.
"If only I was equipped with this in a Five Nights at Freddy's game"
Speaking of which...
I thought when he mentioned FNaF, I thought he was going to review Sister Location. I think I'd rather have Sonic Boom though.
Sister Location is probably after that. But yeah his original Sonic Boom review is my least favorite review he's done & it showcases my biggest problem with him.
why?
***** why what?
I was talking to tim5fl. What is his biggest problem for Johnny
***** yeah, I'm curious too.
Hey Johnny I think a game that you might enjoy playing would be hyper light drifter, seems like a game right up your alley
Fire and Ice is much better
It's so much easier to just press minus to make the cockpit view on the TV. It's really what makes the controls work as a whole.
I love how close that NX gag ended up actually being to the Nintendo Switch. Seriously.
Even if I don't always agree with Johnny's reviews, I never doubt his sincerity of the conclusions he draws. Thanks for the Zero review. Very funny ending to this vid, to boot.
The determination to the joke, holding in a good "oww" at the end there
The new Shantae game is almost out. I hope that'll be on your channel, Johnny.
Really? When?
The target release date is late Oct. early Nov.
When did he get a weigh box to the head?
You know, the game's multi-screen problem can be solved with the 2 player mode, you can also get more shots with it. Try it out some time
I still think doing a reboot was incredibly silly when you consider 64 3D.
The camera and base design of the game would need a change too if the gyroscope becomes optional.
I still think its totally doable with how successful the switch has been, and theres not much else left to port to the switch either
Oh come on Johnny, why didn't you adress the tribute to Sataru Iwata at the end of the game? Do we have to play the role of the "Elephant in the room" for ya or something?
Golden Sun series, PLEASE!
Oh hell yes
The King of Fighters series please!
Please! That is the best rpg series on a handheld.
Golden Sun 1 and 2 are awesome XD I'd love to see him play them, though I honestly have no idea what his opinion will be.
It'd be nice to get a Mortal Kombat marathon with you reviewing Deadly Alliance - MKX
Notification squaaaad
Having laser-armed cameras in FNAF?... I'd love that. and I bet so would people who want revenge for all the jumpscares.
