Probably the reason why EVERYONE stood up for Ms Hepburn was because they respected her craft so greatly. I am a massive Meryl Streep fan, and I could say that she is my favourite actor ever - but by GOD Katharine Hepburn was the GREATEST actor of all time.
and the thing is, she would have never said that about herself, being the greatest, she never covited recognition or approval, she just went out and did what she did best..... own the role
I would definitely say female actor of all time, but let's not forget, her lifelong partner Spencer Tracy won 3 himself, and yes, she was to this day by even modern day actors one of the most respected to ever grace the screen.
@@edwardmiller9549 You are so right. Looking through her interviews, it's obvious that she gave a HUGE damn - probably more fame-obsessed than anyone. She played the, "I'm above it all" persona to perfection, and it made her a huge star. Definitely a fascinating woman.
I was working for a Telemarketing Company in the early 90's. We were working magazine renewals when all of a sudden her name popped up on my computer screen and Katherine Hepburn saying "Hello." I was aghast! We spoke for about 5 minutes & she couldn't have been nicer. Such a thrill! ❤
@@lamarbuckner7110True, but at the same time there are numerous stories of people who worked with her that said she had a high opinion of herself and wasn’t necessarily warm to be around. Katharine herself said she didn’t think highly of actors who had children because she felt they couldn’t be passionate about two different aspects of their life. Maybe she wasn’t cut out for it but that doesn’t mean others weren’t. She even said she would have been a terrible mother because she was a very selfish human being. She certainly was being honest and herself but one who claims to be very selfish isn’t necessarily one aspires to be.
We cannot compare these Hollywood Legends Like Hepburn to artists today. Hepburn is the only person to have 4 oscars, all of them for leading roles. And she was not just amazing actress brilliant one in fact she was an actual movie star of legendary status. She wasnt sucking up to the Hollywood system to get roles and was blind to the bad things, she was a force of a woman and a true legend. We gave great actress with many many awards but they were never really actual movie stars who media adored and raved about and movie stars that were never actually superb actresses, Hepburn was both.
Stop! There are greats working today as well! Katharine was exceptional but she was also working at a different time. She would NEVER win those five leading actress awards in this day and age, that does not mean to say she isn't worthy of winning them it just means that times change. Meryl Streep and Denzel Washington are two currently working actors who are more than deserving of 5 (or more) leading Oscars!
Did not suffer from Parkinson's disease. She set the record straight in the 1993 TV documentary Katharine Hepburn: All About Me (1993), which she narrated herself. Quote: "Now to squash a rumor. No, I don't have Parkinson's. I inherited my shaking head from my grandfather Hepburn. I discovered that whiskey helps stop the shaking. Problem is, if you're not careful, it stops the rest of you too. My head just shakes, but I promise you, it ain't gonna fall off!".
She was truly one of the kind.A true rebel and a true star. She didn't take crap from the Hollywood studios. The same applies to Marlon Brando. They don't make stars like that anymore :(
Today, 'stars' exist for one reason.. to lecture me and to virtue signal about their own particular passions - whether not they are rooted in truth. This is why I stopped going to, or purchasing movies. It's just not fun anymore.
Her outfit reminds me of something. A friend of mine was visited by his mother, who was extremely rich. I saw her three times and she wore the same ordinary comfortable pantsuit each time, even to a fancy restaurant. Finally I asked if she had nothing better to wear, or at least a change of clothing. The answer came immediately: "She doesn't have to impress anybody."
A Krenwinkle kath refuse to wear the traditional evening gown provided by the Oscar. And also why she didn't attend in Oscar just because if she attend in the event she might not win she said that on the interview.
People say she did not deserve her awards because she wasn't nice are a pathetic bunch... She was a very private person who dared to be tough unlike today's celebrities who act so fake to get where they want to be... All those nice celebrities of today are actually waaaay meaner than Katharine ever was!!!
The Oscars should be about the best performances. Period. Sometimes, unfortunately, other things come into play and people win for performance she should not win for. Clearly, the performance in the Lion In Winter was worthy. Guess Who's Coming To Dinner, was because of Spencer, as it is the lessor of all of her Oscar performances and given the fact that Dame Edith Evans had rightfully won everything major award up to that point, and should have won the Oscar for The Whisperers, puts that win in the joke category. On Golden Pond was good work, but that was more because of Henry and people voting on both of them. Michelle would have won for Baker Boys had Henry not been on his death bed.
@Pat Kat and you were correct because they did not, but it's shameful since Evans was the favorite going in and Kate as much as I love her as an actress did not deserve an Oscar for that work in that film.
She had the same attitude that george C Scott had, when he was asked why he refused his Oscar for Patton, he said he knew when he did a good job and didn't need a trophy or somebody to tell him. she was like that, she never covited awards or recognition, she was a very private person who like Bettie Davis..... she did it her way
I remember this wonderful evening, watching the Oscars and being utterly suprised to see KH entering to give the IT award. Both speeches were so moving, KH was a unique actress, great among the greatest. She loved to dress casually at all occasions and she did so with utmost elegance. Of course, even her simple clothes were of the highest quality. A beautiful, nononsense lady if there was one.
Curious Spectator - Definitely a BOND villain. I recall hearing she wasn't too keen on Meryl Streep which she said - you can watch Meryl thinking act her performance.. How dare she! It is a good thing that one of the great actress "Bette Davis" stated she knows that Meryl Streep was an "incredible actress and wished she could work together in a movie together!" Now that is generosity of a great actress.
Catherine Lopez That's interesting since she wasn't an instinctive actress at all. She studied characters and planned their behavior through hours and hours of rehearsals. She is open about this very fact in her biography.
It is all mechanics with Meryl Streep. Grand standing and mechanics. I've only believed her characters twice; Miranda Priestly and Ethel Rosenberg/Hannah Pitt. The rest is nothing but self indulgence wrapped in make-up prosthetics and faulty accents. With Katharine Hepburn, you got what you paid for. Was she limited? Of course! All actors are limited. It is only they who think they are not. Case in point: Meryl Streep.
I remember having to watch The Lion in Winter for a high school class. Now you know in high school, anything they make you watch in class is dull. And most of my classmates snored through it, but I was fascinated by it. So much that I went and rented it and watched it again. I couldn't take my eyes off the brilliant Katherine Hepburn and how she didn't just play the part, she WAS the part. Definitely one of a kind.
Even in 2022 no one was as great as her. She was a legend and an absolut fascinating human-being. She received 4 Oscars because of how great her Perfomances were. She made her last movie at age 87 in 1994 called "One Christmas". She died 29 years (this was in 1974) after this on June 29th 2003 at age 96. May this gorgeous Lady Rest in Peace.
I always loved her. There are so many of her scenes that still make me cry after all these years. One of my most treasured possessions is my autographed letter from her.
What I admire about Katherine Hepburn the most is she was more interested in the craft of acting than being a "star". I think that side of it bored her and she thought it silly. I agree. Usually only British performers fall into that realm but she was an exception and fascinating person. We would be worlds apart in a lot of views but she didn't bang drums on her politics as so many do now and that is boring. She had much more class than that.
Her Spencer Tracy movies are very good, and African Queen and a cojple Cary Grant ones too. People do not talk like that, adn Bette Davis, toda y. The diccion.
Wow, no actress today would ever think of showing up to the Oscars dressed like that today--with all the stylist, fashion police, & magazines to appease. I wish actresses today had that kind of fearlessness.
I heard her say in an interview that she regretted the pants and blames herself (in part) for opening the door for the sloppy and casual way that people dress.
@@jtrain5615 I get it, but it's up to the individual to work out what they look great in . Hepburn looked elegant in casual. I don't being 5 foot two and mildly overweight. Most actresses err on the side of overdressing at the Oscars and will in future have far more to be embarassed about than KH, once the fashions they sport look dated turning from sexy to tacky or raunchy as particular looks go out of style..
I think he was part of the Theatre Guild--something like that--which she greatly admired---if he hadn't been part of that--you wouldn't be seeing her here.
Mr. Weingarten was a movie producer for MGM. He passed in 1977 of Leukemia & was 75. @ Dave Glo…..BTW, Irving Thalberg died really young & was married to Norma Shearer & he died in 1936 of a heart attack. He was only 37 and was also a movie producer for MGM, and really was credited for bringing sophiscated movies to MGM. Norma Shearer was the Merle Streep of her day. Especially her movie "The Women". A movie without a SINGLE man, and FANTASTIC roles. I love reading about "Old Hollywood", where the 'Stars' TRULY acted like stars & NOT a bunch of drug-crazed sex addicts. Actually, they may have been that, but what went on behind closed doors, stayed behind them. For me, those were real Stars, they dressed, looked, acted & spoke like "real" Stars, or what was perceived to have been "real' stars in those days. I just love reading about them. Thelma Todd met a bad end, as did many other "Stars". Sorry, I get carried away !!
@@macarthurfield5674 It's Meryl. That said, "The Women" was very near the end of Norma Shearer's career, and was director George Cuckor's consolation prize to the ladies who didn't get the Scarlett O'Hara part in "Gone With the Wind." Cuckor was set to direct it and was taken off, but that's another story. Shearer was an enormous star, and it didn't hurt that, as Joan Crawford would tell anyone within earshot, "She married the boss," or worse, "I didn't get where I am on my ass." (That's our Joanie!) Irving Thalberg was more than a producer; he was MGM's head of production, overseeing everything, even on his deathbed. He was enormously powerful as Louis B. Mayer was, but unlike Mayer, very much respected for his artistry. I, too, love reading about the old Hollywood that hasn't existed for years. It's mostly tattooed and pierced no-class and no-talents now.
She was one of the few actresses who could do comedy and drama equally well. She should have been given the academy award many times over for her flawless skills.
When I first read that that she only appeared at the Oscars wearing a pyjamas in protest to the banality of the awards I though two things: first, I pictured her in a nightshirt, not something elegant at all and second, that I agree with her: for so long the Oscars have been more about celebrities than about stars and artist, and they have omitted masterpieces in order to prize movies for economic or political reasons. And it amazes me that the Academy celebrates Hepburn so much and still does not take in consideration her opinion.
+Condottier WHAT the hell are you saying?! KNOW WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT,BEFORE LETTING ANYONE KNOW EXACTLY HOW IGNORANT OF FACTS YOU ARE;ALONG with the 22 idiots that agree with you, without doing their own research.
meboneme1 Well... I believe that the best way of criticizing me would be saying why or where I am wrong; rather than just writing half of your comment in capital letters.
If they awarded Oscars based on economic reasons than Star Wars, animated films and most of the superhero flicks would have all won best picture every year
She was a classy, smart, strong, devoted, and just one awesome lady. girls of today should take a lesson from her and see what it takes to be a positive role model and not bother with the likes of the kardashions, who would not know class if they were standing right in front of it.
tara lang She might have been those things but I read most of the actress during her period did not think highly of her including Ginger Rogers, Lucille Ball, Bette Davis and several others. She had a way of thinking she was better than any other actress instead of embracing the various actress talent. She was a bit put off by Meryl Streep because she saw potential in her that was something she could not do - speak languages to meet the need of that particular part. It is too bad I do admire some of her skills but basically it is style of performances over and over again. Rather monotonous.
Catherine Lopez You are just adding your own beliefs and opinions to Hepburn and trying to pass them off as factual. For every actress you mentioned there are at least 2 actresses who disliked them each. Both professionally and personally but considering that all the actresses are long dead it would be hard pressure to ask them for clarification.
Olly4Ever - Everyone has an opinion so to have you disregard my comments is useless. I know what I read and what other said. Plus - as far as acting - I don't see the difference in her performances. I did like her in "Philadelphia" and "Guess Whose Coming To Dinner." For me there wasn't much of a stretch in her acting skills. Compared to others that I found in previous films. One thing I will point out that I do like about her personally she was a "Maverick" meaning unique in her ways.
Angela Carleton - Lynn Turman - what I like about other addresses such as Bette Davis and Olivia de Havilland they fought a good fight to get the studios to allow them to pick and decide what script of movies they wanted - plus the pay was not enough compared to what these young starlets now a days are getting. As for performances - I don't think we will ever see the likes similar to Meryl Streep - who can do just about anything with a "different accent." She trained herself for each of the roles she does and that my dear is something you don't see with other actresses. Plus she is generous and provide guidance to those who seek her advice. Not to mention she is giving and appreciative of those that she has worked with. If you are curious - watch her last Oscar Acceptance Speech. It came directly from the heart!
Brooke Hanley Oh, I loved them in all their films they did together. They worked so well together and there were so many magical moments in every one of their movies. Spencer Tracy has always been one of my favourite actors, along with Gregory Peck and James Stewart.
People who say she was arrogant are missing the point. Being arrogant in persona sometimes serves a purpose - especially when it is not displayed brashly. I personally had no problem with the way she presented herself and I think people who do must be very easily offended, not to mention close minded. If you actually listen to interviews - humility shines through in what she says. A true great.
Knowing and being who you are without making excuses and without apologies for living as you choose is not arrogance. I call that courageous! Most of us don't have that kind of courage. Most of us toe the line and try not to rock the boat. We want to fit in and be liked and admired. My own best moments have been when I did rock the boat and others thought I was out of line. Even when I was wrong at least I was thinking for myself instead of going along to get along. Peace and blessings to all!
Hepburn was one of the most amazing individuals ever to work in Hollywood in any capacity. Aside from being an actress, she was a driven and brilliant business woman. After some early success under contract, she was perceived as being "box office poison" and risked drifting off into oblivion as the studio she was under contract to sidelined her completely. In an unprecedented act of guts and confidence, she took money out of the bank and bought out her own contract. She then went out and purchased the rights to "Philadelphia Story" and won the starring role because she owned the rights. This had never been done in Hollywood, and probably the only time the contract driven studio system was out maneuvered by an actor or actress. There is one thing that stands out so far above any other actress in the business that you can't find any one to compare her to, and that is the talent and ability and pure character to play toe to toe with the biggest male stars as an equal partner in a production. From all the films she did with Spencer Tracey, Humphrey Bogart, John Wayne, Henry Fonda, Lawrence Olivier. And nobody seems to remember perhaps her most remarkable performance in Eugene Oneill's Long Days Journey Into Night with Ralph Richardson. She did a lot of legitimate theater, Shakespeare and even Greek Tragedy in Greece throughout her career; and a host of artistic pictures that people never see or hear about because they were not big box office Hollywood Movies. She took big risks, which is highly unusual for a Hollywood Actress. She wanted to try and expand her range as much as possible and do the most creative things possible. The range of characters is unique. The range of projects is unique. She even won three Emmy nominations for her television film work. True she never tried to change her voice, but anybody that says she just always played herself knows nothing about acting. About her personal demeanor and social attitudes, she had a unique upbringing. Her parents were wealthy New Englanders. But her mother was an important American feminist social reformer and a leader of the suffrage movement in the United States. She was raised extremely progressively for the day. Hollywood tried to retire her and break her many times, but she always found a way to persevere. By the way, if any of the viewers here have not seen Long Day's Journey Into Night, you are missing some greatness; great writing, and a great production of basically the original play directed by Sidney Lumet and with Jason Robards. And I do not know who else could have played this part at that time in this production. It is based on Eugene Oneill's own family history, intertwined with his mother's incurable morphine addiction.
Kate Hepburn won three competitive Best Actress Academy Awards: for Morning Glory, Guess Who's Coming To Dinner and The Lion In Winter. She was nominated for approximately ten Oscars, including Long Day's Journey Into Night and Summertime. She was a self admitted eccentric, who disparaged fashion and dressed for comfort and practicality. She had a long personal and professional relationship with Spencer Tracy, generally regarded as the greatest film actor, along with Cagney, of his era.
What an incredible honor for Mr. Weingarten. If Katherine Hepburn were giving me an award, I'd consider her doing this as 99% of the award! She must have had incredible respect for him. I LOVE what Ms. Hepburn is wearing. She is absolutely beautiful!
I loved her work in "Long Day's Journey Into Night". A very difficult role! Also, Bette Davis was a fellow Yankee, and a big admirer of Miss Hepburn. Bette Davis publicly said that she didn't deserve the Oscar, for "Dangerous"; that Katharine Hepburn gave, by far, the best performance of the year, in "Alice Adams".
There was an uproar because Davis was denied a nomination. Who started it, I never found out. But I have found that someone with an agenda usually initiates these things. Same thing happened with the nominated James Stewart, (for "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington", in 1939. He lost to the very deserving star of "Goodbye, Mr. Chips". If that wasn't enough drama, Clark Gable was the frontrunner, for "Gone with the Wind". So, the next year Stewart won for the forgettable part in "The Philadelphia Story", over his good friend, Henry Fonda, who was nominated for "Grapes of Wrath", whose "Tom Joad" is still quoted to this day. Speaking of friends, Rosalind Russell, lost to her good friend, Loretta Young, when Miss Young was polled as coming in 5th among the Best Actress nominees. Enough of that, for now. thanks for reading.
It's 2022 SHE still the ONLY ONE won four Academy Awards (all for Best Actress), more than any other actor or actress in the history of the award and just ONE APPEARANCE , amazing.
Myrna Loy was a fine actress who suits your description much better than Hepburn does. Hepburn created that over the top personality be noticed in Hollywood Myrna Loy didn't have to.
And even at the Oscars, she's still herself... So of course she shows up dressed like she just popped in after an afternoon of gardening at the cape. "The orchard's in full bloooooooom!". What a woman :-)
When you won 4 Oscars for leading Best actress... Yet you dont attend because you dont care that much. Then, when the time came where she went to the Oscars, she wore something very laid back. She is A CLASS ACT!!!
Really? Who could have appear in these marvellous clothes except Hepburn? Garbo maybe. But Garbo would have chosen nike or adidas for her feet to come at the Oscars. Hepburn was a very complex person apparently but she seems to have made a choice in her very rich life: simplicity. Not to be bothered with all the bullshit that usually makes this business. Whatever anyone says, she has been the only one in this business who made this incredible Journey (or career). Usually actresses in those days didn't last more than 10 years on the top. She did it for almost 50 years. Some others ( like the beautiful I. Bergman) did a marvellous work too. But did anyone noticed how much women are criticized when they have this kind of talent and creativity? Maybe the world has to change? hasn't it?
Katharine Hepburn was my absolute favorite actress when I was 16 and has been all these years! I am now 65 & love her more!! I try to emulate her (I studied to be a classical pianist from 4-23). I will always admire her❤
This was in 1974. Almost 50 years ago. Katharine Hepburn worked until 1994, 20 years after this, at age 87. She died aged 96 in 2003, 9 years after her last movie. Sadly, we'II never get a second Katharine Hepburn.
Miss KATHARINE HEPBURN IS THE "MARIA CALLAS" OF THE MOVIES ...ASTONISHING! OVERWHELMING! A DIVA AND A UNFORGETABLE TALENT, PERSONALLITY AND CLASS!... SHE WAS A "LADY WITH A TRUE CHARISMA"... LIKE MADAME CALLAS, SHE WILL BE NEVER REPLACED!...
Maybe nobody said it but they were all thinking "it's about time!" :) I love the fact that she is "frightened" and looks so uncomfortable while presenting. What a legend!
Katherine Hepburn really didn't give a damn and I love for it. the modern version is Tilda Swinton and ironically Hepburn wore Swinton's outfit from the Ancient one in Doctor Strange 😂😂😂👘🙏
That was worth the 41 year wait. The most dramatic Oscar presentation I've ever seen. What a talent. Look at how absolutely stark the set was. How times have changed.
Some say Hepburn played herself like most actors from the 1930/40's. If true, her persona must be more elevated than most, she won more Oscars than anyone else. Personally I could watch her patrician characterisation over and over and over. Show me a modern actor who is that interesting! Another not well known fact. Check out her lineage. Her family goes back a LONG way - tied to the royal houses of England and France in the 11th,12th and 13th centuries. Yet she never talked about it. The woman oozed class.
Oh all the Protestant Americans give that line of baloney. They were most French Huguenots who got kicked out by the deMedicis and beat it to England to avoid annihilation, changed their names and were suddenly "veddy Inglish."
And another thing, if you want lineage, ask a lot of Italian Americans about their family crest. The Salvuccis and Antinoris, on my mother's side, go back to ancient Carthage and Troy, respectively. Prince Antenor was the first bearer of the Antinori clan (and the one who betrayed the Trojans by opening the gates and letting that silly big horse slip in!), he was also the founder of Venice. Italians know a hell of a lot more about nobility than the northern folks.
No question, Kate was a wonderful actress and she did win more Oscars than anyone else, so far. However, her 2nd win was because Spencer had recently died. Do the research which is easy today, with google and computers. Everyone expected Dame Edith Evans to win that year for The Whisperers, as she had won all of the big awards coming into Oscar, including the Globe, beating Kate for Best Actress and it was a performance that was head and shoulders above all of that years' nominees. You can find it here on UA-cam, so check it out for yourself. Shame that Evans did not win. You can find it here: ua-cam.com/video/_z8QuOAjocY/v-deo.html
Strong, fascinating, down to earth, talented, humble. She never try to sugar coat her life or personnality. Honest and direct, she was not superficial and ego inflated like many other stars. She never care about prices and oscar, only to give a good performance in great movies.
A true artist ..iconic...divine..... Katherine Hepburn is the greatest actress of all times...simply the best!!!! A movie star and a true legend...We all still miss you Kate!!!!...
My childhood idol. Celebrities had such curated personas then & Kate was an icon of independence. No one better to personify Eleanor of Aquitaine. 😂 She passed 3 mos after my eldest child was born (late in life & named Eleanor, of course). I still remember being overseas, sitting in my car & hearing the news, & listening to her remarkable voice. 21 years ago. Such a gut punch even though we knew she couldn’t last forever. 💔 Her interview with Dick Cavett was priceless - for anyone who hasn’t seen it, reward yourself.
@@castalia60able No, she didn't play by the Hollywood games that others played. Example: she was one of the elite that was offered & considered the part if Scarlett O'Hara in GWTW. She refused because she knew & was absolutely right about the drama that was entailed with just about every actress in Hollywood wanting that part. she was an unapologetic honest woman in a high profile & cutthroat industry. Many couldn't understand or take her her because of it. those that did understand her sing her praises.
Kate Hepburn saluted Lawrence Weingarten who was a great Producer at MGM working with great stars such as Jean Harlow, Myrna Loy, Elizabeth Taylor, Susan Hayward and several times in films with Ms. Hepburn and Spencer Tracy. His last big hit was Debbie Reynolds in Molly Brown.
Hepburn was an original from head to toe. She lived by her own rules...and gave memorable performances over and over. Her later work seemed to get even better. The African Queen is such a great movie...no two could have done it better. Guess Who's Coming to Dinner, another masterpiece, as well as Rooster Cogburn. On Golden Pond, with Henry Fonda, was SO GENUINE AND BELIEVABLE, you could almost believe they were real people. Her comedy chops were so easy for her. I wish I had seen her on stage...same for Helen Hayes.
The thing about Streep, and Davis for that matter, is that with both of them I am always aware that I am watching a performance. With Hepburn, I am drawn into each of her characters on a different level, but am able to accept them as their own individual characters, despite shared physical traits. Each one mesmerizes me. You can't seriously see Susan Vance, Eleanor of Acquitaine, Violet Veneble, Mary Tyrone, and Rose Sayer even sharing the same room can you?
Kate Hepburn earned the right to wear whatever she damn well felt like to this affair after her 40 year career. A lot of people in Hollywood, from screen-writers to costume designers to cameramen paid off a lot of overdue bills, thanks to her.
The great Hepburn spent the time before her legendary appearance with Susan Hayward's dressing room at the Oscars giving strength and love to the gutsy Redhead who stricken with brain cancer would make a appearance with Charlton Heston to award the Best Actress award. This was Hepburn's only appearance at the Oscars. Stars like Hepburn and Hayward do not exist in today's Hollywood.
People who pick at how Katharine Hepburn speaks, missing what she is saying, deserve everything they get or don't get. What an amazing person, on screen and off. Thanks for posting this video! Keep Kate alive :)
Kate has said she enjoyed the spotlight though. She's an actress that doesn't like too much vain publicity, but she won't deny a bit of attention on her way here and there either.

OMG she's so cool!
@@1046C yes, that was what my mother had, as well as her youngest brother. Essential Tremor is a pain but not terminal.
When a standing ovation was very rare and really meant something.
Now they do it for CardiB
They should've been roaring with applause when she stepped out onto that stage
0:52 - Absolute respect for an actress who once quoted, "My prize is my work."
She was truly one of the kind.A true rebel and a true star. She didn't take crap from the Hollywood studios. The same applies to Marlon Brando. They don't make stars like that anymore :(
Both the best and difficult to work with, KH because she new how to do everything and MB selfish and an odd ball.
Don't compare her to Brando, he was quite the shitty person
Leo 1509 brando has changed the game of acting and had a such a big impact on hollywood. he also wasn’t that shitty person as u think.
Today, 'stars' exist for one reason.. to lecture me and to virtue signal about their own particular passions - whether not they are rooted in truth. This is why I stopped going to, or purchasing movies. It's just not fun anymore.
The thing is they did not make them stars but the stars made themselves!!!
She was not a product of the Hollywood Factory. She was a product of Katherine Hepburn. One of the all time greats.
Yes, she was a major actress in the studio system
RIP Katharine Hepburn (May 12, 1907 - June 29, 2003), aged 96
You will be remembered as a legend.
The answer came immediately: "She doesn't have to impress anybody."
great story--eloquently told! This lady sounds like she graced many lives. thanks for sharing!
A Krenwinkle kath refuse to wear the traditional evening gown provided by the Oscar. And also why she didn't attend in Oscar just because if she attend in the event she might not win she said that on the interview.
A Krenwinkle o
Pantsuits are way more comfortable than dresses.
A Krenwinkle respect
People say she did not deserve her awards because she wasn't nice are a pathetic bunch... She was a very private person who dared to be tough unlike today's celebrities who act so fake to get where they want to be... All those nice celebrities of today are actually waaaay meaner than Katharine ever was!!!
And she didn't win in the Nicest Person category. It was Best Actress. And she was one of the best, no question about that.
Sophie Aldaide DIspite her love of the spotlight, she was horribly shy & trusted her family & friends, not too many outsiders. A very astute woman.
@Pat Kat and you were correct because they did not, but it's shameful since Evans was the favorite going in and Kate as much as I love her as an actress did not deserve an Oscar for that work in that film.
Lawrence weingarten was so lucky becoming the only person to receive an Oscar from Katherine Hepburn
Imagine being nominated 12 times and winning 4 oscars and you did not attend any. That is Savage.
She knew that most prizes, Oscars included, are popularity contests and subjective to people's opinions. She did not care for anybody's opinions.
@@MTMF.london She is also on record saying she never went out of fear of losing.
Shr never felt she had to pat herself on the back - pure class. Above any of the so called 'Stars".nowadays.
Rubbish
A beautiful, nononsense lady if there was one.
she would have made a perfect female Bond villain
Curious Spectator - Definitely a BOND villain. I recall hearing she wasn't too keen on Meryl Streep which she said - you can watch Meryl thinking act her performance.. How dare she! It is a good thing that one of the great actress "Bette Davis" stated she knows that Meryl Streep was an "incredible actress and wished she could work together in a movie together!" Now that
is generosity of a great actress.
Catherine Lopez Meryl Streep is overrated.
Catherine Lopez In every performance you can see Streep's wheels turning. She is greatly over rated.
One of her best roles.
I so admire her. She was independent, and didn't need a man or children to make her happy. I love her.
1927Norma no, she was interested in being a star but but but she managed to not destroy people in her way.
Her Spencer Tracy movies are very good, and African Queen and a cojple Cary Grant ones too. People do not talk like that, adn Bette Davis, toda y. The diccion.
Not even James Corden, Cynthia Erivo, etc are just as focused on the glitz and glam
I had the privilege to see her perform on stage at the Old Globe in San Diego. What a presence she had...unforgettable.
She sure does.
Suzanne, how luck you are!
+FabinhoFlapp It was one of those moments you just never forget. I was so honored to be able to see her act in person.
Suzane, I can realize the scene. An unforgettable moment.
Lucky you...which play?
Wow, no actress today would ever think of showing up to the Oscars dressed like that today--with all the stylist, fashion police, & magazines to appease. I wish actresses today had that kind of fearlessness.
Well, but to be fair, she looked fantastic in pants, casual yet elegant.
Maybe Diane Keaton...
I heard her say in an interview that she regretted the pants and blames herself (in part) for opening the door for the sloppy and casual way that people dress.
Well, Sharon Stone did turned up one year in a Gap's men's shirt.
I don't know of Lawrence Weingarten, but he must have been quite exceptional for Katharine Hepburn to make her only Academy Awards appearance.
Irving was his one time brother-in-law
Her record of 4 Best Actress Oscars is still unbeaten up to this day, What a great woman!
Still to this day 17 years after she’s gone the greatest actress of all time. Hand freaking down to a LEGEND.
She was one of the few actresses who could do comedy and drama equally well. She should have been given the academy award many times over for her flawless skills.
BEST ACTRESS OF ALL TIMES. . NO OTHER ONE GETS EVEN CLOSE TO HER.
+Scarpa Henrique There were 3 but I am glad you have a favourite.
+Scarpa Henrique I beg to differ....Bette Davis.
Davis is number 2. KATE is the ONE!
+Scarpa Henrique I am quoting Peter O'toole right now: "She was the best...the best. The best of America"
YES SHE WAS AND STILL IS
Gotta Love Katherine Hepburn. True to her nature-she shows up in pants! Rock on Miss. Hepburn. Rock on...
If they awarded Oscars based on economic reasons than Star Wars, animated films and most of the superhero flicks would have all won best picture every year
Condottier
You are correct. I think Oscars is great in picking nominees yet they are so bad in picking the right winners.
She is first rate...So cool to watch her being herself here...
She and Bette Davis are my all time favorites, truly Icons.
Indeed! I agree utterly.
Mine too
She was a classy, smart, strong, devoted, and just one awesome lady. girls of today should take a lesson from her and see what it takes to be a positive role model and not bother with the likes of the kardashions, who would not know class if they were standing right in front of it.
tara lang She might have been those things but I read most of the actress during her period did not think highly of her including Ginger Rogers, Lucille Ball, Bette Davis and several others. She had a way of
thinking she was better than any other actress instead of embracing the various actress talent. She was a bit put off by Meryl Streep because she saw potential in her that was something she could not do - speak languages to meet the need of that particular part. It is too bad I do admire some of her skills but basically
it is style of performances over and over again.
One thing I will point out that I do like about her personally
she was a "Maverick" meaning unique in her ways.
As for performances - I don't think we will ever see the likes similar to Meryl Streep - who can do just about anything
with a "different accent." She trained herself for each of the roles she does and that my dear is something you don't see with other actresses. Plus she is generous and provide guidance to those who seek her advice. Not to mention she is giving and appreciative of those that she has worked with. If you are curious - watch her
last Oscar Acceptance Speech. It came directly from the heart!
Angela Carleton What I meant to say like about other " actresses" such as Bette Dvis and Olivia de Havilland etc.
quite simply, the best actress who ever lived.
Such a classy actress. A true legend. One of the very few. There won't be another Katharine Hepburn, Ingrid Bergman or Vivien Leigh.
Loved her in Desk Set with Spencer Tracy. They were great together as well as the supporting cast.
Exactly.
Kate is the greatest actress, and the greatest star and a great woman. Period.
What people thought was arrogance, was simply a way of fighting for herself.
Didn't think she new everything...she did know everything.
Katherine Hepburn is/always will be Hollywood's most incredibly powerful actress in history without question ~
♡♡♡
to be graced with Katharine Hepburn's presences is beyond me...I love her and she's inspiring to any actor or person in the acting business.
A great Actress, no one can take that away, in a class of her own.
MrImiller07 She won 4 competitive Oscars. Not 3 and she was nominated 12 times, not 10.
Bette Davis won for Dangerous because she had been snubbed the year before for her performance in Of Human Bondage
Still, Bette Davis publicly acknowledged the work of Miss Hepburn, in "Alice Adams" as being the best, by far, the year that Miss Davis won.
I agree, I'm just saying the reason why she won and not Miss Hepburn
Bette was robbed later with all about eve
It's 2022 SHE still the ONLY ONE won four Academy Awards (all for Best Actress), more than any other actor or actress in the history of the award and just ONE APPEARANCE , amazing.
One of the true greats and we better for her and how she made us feel in every film she made Thank you Kate
Hepburn and Myrna Loy are two classic actresses whose personalities are so honest and contemporary, could be in films today.
This is a true STAR and yet as regular as an old shoe,no pretense, no jewels just her real self expressing with her heart her feelings for this man.
When you won 4 Oscars for leading Best actress...
Yet you dont attend because you dont care that much.
Then, when the time came where she went to the Oscars, she wore something very laid back.
She is A CLASS ACT!!!
She is on record saying she never went because she was afraid of losing.
i respect her for standing by her principles about acting competitions and only coming out to honor a lifelong friend
She's the living proof that human perfection exist.
Yes she is. And Ella Fitzgerand's voice is proof that there are miricles. They are
both great women.
Yess she is ❤❤❤❤
Very beautiful woman. aged beautifully.

She was amazing as her in that movie. She definitely didn’t get enough praise for that role.
@@DanYeLL2003 she won an oscar for her role, what acclaim didn't she receive lol
I know right... she really deserved that Oscar.
Bette Davis.
I love the fact she wore a comfortable pant suit. She's like "I'm here, thank you and good bye"
The work was what was important to her, and keeping her private life private. Class personified.
What a class!!
One of the plusses of Hepburn's appearance that year was her giving Susan Hayward moral support to make HER final appearance.
That was worth the 41 year wait. The most dramatic Oscar presentation I've ever seen. What a talent.
Look at how absolutely stark the set was. How times have changed.
Kate's accent was Midatlantic diction. And, 80 years ago, if you had that Midwest or Texan accent, you would study Kate or Ronald Colman.
Strong, fascinating, down to earth, talented,
humble. She never try to sugar coat her life or personnality. Honest and direct, she was not superficial and ego inflated like many other stars. She never care about prices and oscar, only to give a good performance in great movies.
This woman remained a tremendous stage presence until the day she left us... and after.
She's wearing such a simple attire compared to the other attendees. And yet she shines brighter than anyone else in the room.
She was just so fabulous! She was a true STAR in the Hollywood sense!
A true artist
..iconic...divine.....
Katherine Hepburn is the greatest actress of all times...simply the best!!!! A movie star and a true legend...We all still miss you Kate!!!!...
She’s an absolute legend. ❤️
Correction: I believe that Hepburn won a fourth Oscar for her performance in On Golden Pond.
MrImiller07 She did win 4 oscars but she wasn't liked by a lot of actresses because she was mean.. and a bit stand-offish.
@@oliviarodriguez6693 From everything I have read about Katherine Hepburn she did want the part of Scarlett O'Hara.
The greatest American Actress of All Time,Katherine Hepburn.
Her in lion in winter was a magnificent acting performance.
masterfull, you see the emotions in her eyes, face. Breathtaking !
My absolute favorite of all time.
Spectacular acting
No glamour gown for Kate. Cruised Cher backstage...looked her up and down and said "Hi, Kid"
QUEEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The greatest actress in all time!
Kate, above all... after, the other great actresses and stars!
Bette Davis.
Amazing. What greater honor could there be for someone in the entertainment industry than to be honored and praised by Katherine Hepburn.
Kathrine Hepburn is my ideal of the PERFECT woman in this appearance alone. Fully accomplished and Fully coverd up!!!
i looove heeer 😍😍
Katherine you were and still are at the top of any list I would have of actors. Thank you and I bet your rebirth has been a knock out!!!
How refreshingly real and gracious was Ms. Hepburn. Bet she did her own hair.
Her honesty in life to me is perfection.RIP Kate
GREATEST ACTRESS IN ALL TIMES!MASTER! QUEEN! DIVA! GENIUS! LEGEND!KATE HEPBURN, ONE AND ONLY! 👏👏👏👏👏
YEES!! 😍😍😍😍
👏👏👏
I love her outfit. It makes so many statements.
She is the king of the world, and she knows it very well!
Immediate goosebumps...what a deserved ovation !!!
And, really Miss Kate, "it's about time" !!!
Hepburn didn't need an award for her acting. She was already a STAR...
What is remarkable about katherine is the older she got the better she was I consider her bette and meryl the goddesses of women acting
How did you EVER find this ?? A true Gem !! Bravissimo, Kate !! Thank you !!
