Yes, so often we forget about the elderly pioneers, but all of these older folks are still so beautiful. I think we have sadly lost most of them since this broadcast. Luise Rainer was a treat - she left Hollywood voluntarily, despite 2 Oscars, great talent & beauty. I loved seeing Claude Jarman, Jr - one of the greatest performances by a child.

For those of us who are old enough to remember Olivia de Havilland was one of the finest mover stars ever. I grew up with her and Errol Flynn in the Adventures of Robin Hood. I remember the first time "Gone With The Wind" played at a local theater in Wilmington, NC. I was a senior in high school and I took my date to see the most exciting movie ever made. This has been a day of recalling many old memories. There are a number of excellent actors and actress' who I feel are all time greats. Yes, this great lady will be 104 come July 1, 2020. Her gentile way is what I will always remember about her. I first saw her at the age of 7 watching The Adventures of Robin Hood and now as I am about to be 70 she is still a fine lady. For whoever took the time to make his small segment available I thank you, I have booked marked this as I tend to go down memory lane on occasion. Juliaflo it probably didn't happen because it would reveal a still sore wound that doesn't ever heal properly:
The discrepancy in numbers of non white actors who both, get into roles and win awards. Back in 2003 there was already a lot of shame in the racial misrepresentation landmarked by Hollywood, with the lack of Asians, Hispanics, African-Americans working. Only, back then this problem had a tight lid on and didn't spill into mainstream media like now. I bet a Franklin some of the organizers wanted this tribute at the 2018 Os but they must have gathered the _list if characters_ and realized "ooops, not enough diversity to make this happen with today's internet social networking hoopla to swiftly point it out, sorry", and quickly scratched that idea...
      #InsiderDamageControl, I say...😬

You would think that the producers of the Oscar broadcasts are planning to do this again for the 100th-anniversary broadcast. With 10 years of lead time, they will probably be letting it known throughout the acting community that anyone who has won an Oscar should keep the last weekend of February, 2028, open for (hopefully) a whole weekend of events.

  • @oldguy2082

The 50th and 75th anniversary shows where past award winners gathered on stage were great moments; the assembly of great actors whose class and dignity on and off the screen (with a few exceptions) are rarely matched today. This was when Oscar shows were still worth watching.

@@rachaelcrawley4215 It's amazing, though, how many are still with us and past 90. Good for them! And there were many missing in 2003 and in the last 21 years many new stars who would mix in now.
What's amazing is that actors like Luise Rainer and Olivia DeHavilland and their accomplishments had been lost forever until the 1930's came along. Their generation was the first whose performances were preserved. Before film, once a performance was done on the stage, it was done. If you hadn't been there to see it live, you never saw it. We are able to see century-old performances now, though the performers are long dead. How lucky we are to have been born in the era of film.

Ryan West I love you, Ernie! Thank you for being part of my family. My mom had the lead in "State of the Union" at the Barter Theatre, and you had your very first role EVER ... a walk-on as a union boss. Getting sentimental about this, in my case, has to do somehow with that emotional welling up about the passage of time, and all things being transient, especially the days of our youth. I think the poet, Alfred, Lord Tennyson, gets close to it in his poem "Tears, Idle Tears." For that reason, it is heart-warming to see icons from the past STILL around, be they film actors and actresses , singers or others, who can comfort us by still being there.

I have been to the Oscars only once and this was the year. I couldn't believe my luck that all these iconic Oscar winning stars, old and new, were there in front of me, all the way back to Luise Rainer and Mickey Rooney in the 30s. It was pure Old Hollywood magic. Since then, of course, quite a number have passed away but their work lives on - at least with me it does. Mind you, I was with a group of 25 year olds last week who had never heard of Barbra Streisand - and she is still working, appearing and performing!

leafyutube with the deaths of Alicia Rhett (India Wilkes) and Mary Anderson (Maybelle Merriwether) this year, only de Havilland (Melanie Wilkes) and Mickey Kuhn (Beau Wilkes) remain. Beau was Ashley and Melanie's son, so it's kinda sweet that mother and son are the last ones left.

Hello Carol how are you doing today?
      Olivia was almost 90 here---Incredible !
Notice no crip notes in her hand and no self-serving warbling speech. She is sharp !
Bittersweet to see almost half the winners sitting are now gone...Carol how long have you been following Olivia? .

Catherine Zeta Jones is one of the nominees and winners. Who would of guessed she'd be playing Olivia de Havilland in Feud, 14 years later? And better yet, Olivia would still be alive at 100.

@@murrayaronson3753 and Susan Sarandon and Kathy Bates were all there. Let's see. we have Bette Davis, Joan Blondell and Olivia DeHavilland up there already. It would have been a little awkward if Angelina Jolie showed up with Jon Voight sitting there. They've been estranged for years.

My moms favorite movie is GWTW. My siblings and I have gotten her lots of memorabilia over the years. I never understood as a child why she liked that movie so much. I was never into the “old” movies. As an adult, it has now become one of my favorite movies. Rest peacefully Miss Olivia.

she is bony PLAIN compared to Olivia. Julie came around about the time Hollywood lost its desire to cast beautiful women...in place of plain, homely girls without beautiful figures. You can hate my comment all you want, but you can't deny this fact. Julie was the start of an infatuation with girls who looked like boys!!!

QBAN2010 That's NOT a fact, it's your opinion and may I say it's a stupid opinion... If you think Julie is plain, then you might think the earth is flat too... Just because a girl is tomboy-ish, doesn't mean she isn't beautiful... Your comment just highlights your regressive mentality..

What an icon! Not only did De Havilland win two Oscars in the Best Actress and Supporting Actress categories, she co-starred with Gable and Vivien Leigh in Gone With The Wind; she co-starred with Errol Flynn in his best films: The Adventures Of Robin Hood, Captain Blood and They Died With Their Boots On; she co-starred with Clift and Richardson in Wyler's The Heiress and in The Snake Pit and in Light In The Piazza. She is now 98 years old and lives in Paris.

de Havilland's two Oscars are for Best Actress (THE HEIRESS, TO EACH HIS OWN); her only Supporting nomination was for GONE WITH THE WIND, but she lost that to co-star Hattie McDaniel.
