@LiamKillen I’ve both of these machines, question… Should I just persevere with them or move to a groove machine or like the Pioneer Toraiz to live jam?? Not got lots of time,I’m a truck driver away all week,so I’d like something that I can learn quickly…😊 Love your videos, wish I could use the gear like you do!!!😢
Another fun way you can use the TR8S is expanding some synths that have menu-diving creation by adding the CCs for those to midis essentially turning your drum machine into a big ole midi knob salad. I've done this to my microkorg and I'll probably end up making a video explaining it at some point.
Probability is a sleeper, make your 1 bar groove endlessly evolve and sub probability is even more gravy indeed, this drummer is nothing but sheer fun once you learn them shift and hidden functions, the worflow just opens up more
I love your videos on this device. I don't have one myself yet but I think it is really amazing. At school where I learnt audio editing and mixing one of our teachers had tr-8 and showed it to us. I hadn't seen something as simple and inspiring as this before. Later he took us to his studio where he had many legendary synths, juno 106, sh101, many other synths and devices from other brands... and I kept getting back to tr-8, this was always the first thing I wanted to play. Later I saw tr-8s in a music shop, after a short testing I must agree this pad is a great addition. Sounds are great, workflow is still so simple and hands on, just what it loved it for. I must get one of these someday. Th-8 was a love from the first play but I think eventually I would like to have s version, for samples and, actually, for an addition of this pad'
You are the reason I bought a TR-8S lol, love coming across these little tips. My live skills with Ableton are really weak as a noob, I'be be keen to see a video of what you were doing with all those buttons on the novation in Ableton
Really enjoyed this. I absolutely love your reviews and thoughts man! Your mates techno was soundin quality also. Where can I find more of you and your mates music?
Im really curious about one thing. If you add really well processed samples to the tr8s, will it still sound thin? Im asking that because i have a list of 8 kicks and drums that i always use, they sound great. That would solve my problem and i would finally get a tr8s.
It's really just a mixing thing in the end, but for whatever reason, at least in my experience, yes - the TR-8S just seems to sound thin in comparison to a lot of my other drum machines. This is why I use it as like a "top layer" sort of thing a lot of the time.
I’ve always known these are great but I’ve always avoided them due to how plastic they are. (Kind of a build snob) However nowadays I think they’re the best drum machine on the market in terms of versatility and live use and price. I have a TR6s atm but will definitely be adding the 8s soon.
Honestly... I totally get it - every unit is a little bit slanted which is annoying AF lol. Still amazing units though and they're durable ! I see them used live all the time. BTW you seem to be chatty - I think you'd enjoy my Discord community vibes - here's an invite link: discord.gg/xj8J2xJuBP
Hi - great video ! How do you get the audio of Ableton to show up on one the TR8s faders? Is it able to receive the Ableton stereo internally? I actually patch my lap top soundcard into the TR8s External in!
@@LiamKillen wow cool! so you are able to set that one fader up to be a midi controller ? Does the sound of the TR8s kick drum still reside on the BD track when in this mode or is the volume / level control for the kick drum no longer active ? Thanks !
@@NegativeSurge You lose the TR's KD (or whatever channel) when doing this so if you want to assign a channel or two as midi control for your DAW then choose which ones you want to give up. I've just set my new TR-8S up with my Push 3 which is a really fun setup.
Just sold my 8S for the Drumlogue 🤣 It’s true that the 8S for live is sweat but I somehow prefer the sound of the logue. They’re not far regarding live Korg side though, they need to tweak the firmware to let us assign knobs as we want.
ALSO! instead of CLEARING your track, you can restore it to its last saved! so you can add to an instrument track and make it more complicated, and then insta restore it to the last saved programming instead of clearing the whole thing!
@@LiamKillen glad I could help, since you've helped me so much with gear. Also, another live function that goes unnoticed is holding the step and sides rolling thru the options like Ctrl, Velocity, tuning, decay and probability.
Apologies to everyone reading this for newbie questions but... 1) What's the device you are using with the TR-8S and why are you using it? 2) does the TR-8S or the device next to it allow any synchronisation with pocket operators? 3) I've had and MPC One for 4 years now and despite asking a lot of UA-cam stations no one has been able to answer and the are no videos I've found, but, i understand MPC One is capable of being master clock etc for multiple pocket operators: does anyone know how to do this?! Thank you!
1- novation launchpad! Its launching scenes in Ableton 2- yes you can sync the tr8s is POs for sure 3- yes you can def make the MPC the master clock for POs - the resources you need are def already here on YT- you might just have to dig a bit!
Really helpful video as always Liam, thank you. I do love the TR8S but have struggled with the size of the thing. My setup space is absolutely tiny which always forces hard choices when it comes to gear. At the moment I’m experimenting with loading up my Digitakt with Roland XxX samples (all from Samples From Mars) and going back to basics with the Digitakt as a pure one-shot drum sampler instead of the TR8S and Syntakt for additional drums and synths. I do miss the performance controls of the TR8S for sure but I’ve found the Digitakt loaded up with Roland XxX samples can give the TR8S a run for its money. I get that a sample is static while an ACB modelled sound has more movement from one hit to the next, but in a mix it’s almost impossible to tell the difference TBH. Still… I won’t ever sell my TR8S I’m just waiting until the day when I have more than 70cm of space for my entire setup!
Cool stuff. Are you only using the TR8s as a controller for track volume and some custom FX? And the novation controller switches some drum loops in Ableton? I also tried sending MIDI information (including actual notes) over USB from the TR8s into Reaper (with Drumazon 2 for the sound). Tone, decay, FX controls were also MIDI mapped to the VST - allowing to retain some more flexibility while being able to adjust the notes / rhythms. Here is a video: ua-cam.com/video/j8ADUpa_xI0/v-deo.html - how you / anyone else tried something similar?
why have a 909 kick in ableton…when you literally have a tr8s in front of you? if the tr8s kick sounds thin to the point of needing another 909 from ableton what’s the point of a tr8s?
The sampled 909 def have more oomph than the TR-8S which is why it's there. I personally like the 8S as an add on to drums that I know will sound full to begin with. It does sound thin which is why I use it in this context more for mid/high - higher end drums :-)
Thank you so much for watching! 🙂
