Barry Sanders is unquestionably the greatest RB of all time. Just too bad he was on a horrendous team that forced him into early retirement (he would have every single meaningful record had he not retired early). - NOT a Lions fan
This brought back so many great memories. Throughout the '90s a few friends and I would drive from Savannah Georgia to Tampa Bay to watch the Lions play against the Buccaneers. My favorite game was on October 12th, 1997. The Lions won 27-9, but what made the game so incredible was the historic game Barry Sanders had. Barry had 24 carries for 215 yards with 2 rushing TDs and a 7 yard TD reception. He passed Jim Brown on the NFLs All-Time Rushing List. He became the only player in NFL history to run for two 80+ yard Touchdowns(80, 82) in the same game. This was also the year he broke 2000 yards. It was a very memorable day for me. Thank you Mr. Elliott Harrison for this trip into the past.
As a Bucs fan, I loved watching Sanders run, when he WASN"T playing Tampa Bay. When he played the Bucs, I just shook my head and thought we can never stop him. Although the Bucs did once, in the first half. Don't remember exactly when, but the Bucs held him to like 20 yards in the first half. Second half....different story. 200 yards. He was amazing.
I don't live in Detroit and I am not a Lions fan... But I think Barry Sanders was the most amazing RB I have ever seen. There may be RB's with better total numbers but there is no one that had Barry's combination of instinctive moves, ability to accelerate through the smallest gap, and break tackles. I love watching his highlights... He always makes me laugh... He made some of the best defensive players in NFL history look like clowns. And the guy was a class act both on and off the field.
Barry displayed the humility of a warrior spirit. No dancing after a score - just another day at the office. I show my son greatness when we watch Barry and although not apart of this video Earl Campbell’s name must be mentioned when “greatness” is mentioned.
just to add some solace and some credence to this..Yes, the Lions losing ways was PART of the reason Barry retired so early, but it wasnt the only reason, Coach Bob Ross wasnt handling Barry as a superstar correctly, and often chastised Barry for his running style, I think any athlete would grow tired of that..as well the organization made a lot of bad trades that Barry didnt like..Kevin Glover was a good friend of his, and trading him hurt Barry deeply
Lions had a great defense in 2014 but they really messed up that draft that year. They knew Suh,Williams & Fairly were gonna leave the team. They could have drafted Aaron Donald or Taylor Lewan both big needs at the time. Instead they drafted Eric Ebron who they probably could have gotten in the 3rd round. The other thing that happened to their defense & think part of the reason Calvin left was that Tullock retired & Levy a superstud linebacker got a hip injury & never recovered in 2015 pre-season game vs Washington. I also believe the lions were gonna cut him because his salary would have been $27 million & he was hurt a lot,had bad knees & ankles & could never really practice.
Without a doubt Barry was and is the greatest running back to ever play in the NFL. Facts and stats are crystal clear. And the only reason he retired was because it wasn't fun anymore to him not because of injury or lack of skill. Barry's legs would have ran for several more years if he let them. The lions had no passing game nor O-line which made it that much more of a legit reason to say he is the absolute greatest RB to grace the game. Pure skill, will and determination. There is no sane reason to debate that fact. Payton, Jim brown, Emmitt and others come after Barry. Point blank.
Yep all the women at thanksgiving would get so pissed because all the men & boys refused to come eat until the lions games were over. Of course we lived in suburbs of Detroit. But do not mess with our thanksgiving lions football game. Especially since Barry was playing.
I often look back at the great players from my childhood and think, "Would they actually still be great in today's game?" When I think about Barry the answer is a resounding YES!
He loved that Tampa sunshine and that beautiful grass. I was at many of those games where he had amazing runs. It wasn't a matter of if he would break one. It was when.
Barry Sanders is by far the best running back to have ever played. With limited blocking from the offense of line Barry Sanders was still able to gain unbelievable yards..I wish he was able to win the Super Bowl.
Makes sense why my dad always mentioned how Barry destroyed us growing up. How he juked my boy Derrick Brooks like that 😭 Been a Bucs fan of all 30 years of my life. Still believe Barry is the GOAT
Paul Cotton You honestly just sound like someone salty bears fan. Stanford runs his offense how he likes and maybe isn't a tom Brady but is easily top 10 qbs let alone not even top 15...
Paul Cotton Stafford has actually been a better QB since Calvin retired... I mean it’s been YEARS since he’s retired, and he’s consistently in the conversation for top 5 QB and always has top 5 stats lol.
Paul Cotton: I have been a Lions Fan since mid 1960's. Born in Detroit & grew up as a kid in Brighton & lived all my 58 years in South Eastern Michigan. Since Calvin has left Stafford has been a better QB. He goes thru progressions better & does not rely on 1 receiver. He has never had a RB or run game behind him hence not a single 100 yard game for a back since 2013. Defenses just play the pass. Here are a few stats for you the last couple of years. Lions near or at the bottom for run game. Stafford last several years is near or at the bottom for time to throw the ball meaning his offensive line does not give him protection. Lions are always one of the top teams for dropped passes. Many of Stafford's Int's have come in the way of off the intended reciever's hands. Finally a stat came out last year which I kinda of knew watching that the lions receiving core got less separation then any team in the NFL which means a much smaller window for Stafford to throw into. Finally as good as Calvin was he dropped many of passes & lots of them would have been TD's. Please know your facts before you spout off about something.
While the Browns are THE worst franchise in the NFL, the Lions are a close second. 1 playoff win in 60 years, 11 winning seasons since 1978, 2 hall-of-famers forced into retirement due to the team’s incompetence, 0-16, no division titles since 1993, a franchise QB and HoF WR on the same team that put together 2 playoff appearances in 7 seasons, and a failure to produce a legitimate contender with said ONLY franchise QB in history 10 seasons in. Only major difference between Detroit and Cleveland is that the Browns never have had players to squander since Jim Brown. (All coming from a Lions fan BTW).
Na the worst franchise is the Arizona Cardinals (this team has never ever had a dominant stretch at best they have 2 good years then fall off) then the the Detroit Lions. The Cleveland Brown's had a dominant late 40's - late 50's and a nice little late 60's stretch.
96-98, when Sanders was his very best, the Bucs were a top 10 defense. '97 and '98 especially, they were top 3. If he stuck around in '99, he would have tortured them again, despite being a top 3 defense. That's how good he was.

Yeah I remember. Brett Perriman was great as well. It is astonishing to me that Detroit wasn't able to exploit teams that were constantly stacking the box against Sanders. Why did they never get a decent QB who could read a defense and hit a tight end on play action. So sad. Lions should have been so much better. Speaks volumes to how dysfunctional this organization must have really been at the time.
It's not surprising. During Barry Sander's era, Tampa Bay was one of the worst teams in the NFC each year. 1997 was the only playoff season Tampa had when Barry was still playing. Don't get me wrong though, Barry's still the greatest I've seen in my lifetime.
Barry is the best ever. But, from a fair perspective, the run at 1:05 should have been called back due to the illegal block in the back his teammate delivered.
Also from a fair perspective....That dude was not in a position to make the tackle anyway. way behind Barry.....would not have come close to touching him. Barry already coasting home when the illegal block was made.
imagine if Barry Sanders had the offensive line that Emmit Smith had in Dallas. well over 20,000 rushing yards easy for his career. Smith finished with 18,355 yards in 15 season. Sanders finished with 15,269 yards in 10 seasons. Retiring early. Still in his prime. Give Sanders another 5 seasons and I think you all know where I'm going with this. Sorry Smith. lol.
Put Barry in during 1940, 1960, 1980, 2000, and current... he’d be the best at ANY time period. Best rb of all time by far.
Easily. Doesn't have to look over his shoulder for 2nd either
I'd submit that only Bo Jackson, if he had played just football, could've possibly challenged Barry.
Definitely best rb of all time
Barry Sanders is unquestionably the greatest RB of all time. Just too bad he was on a horrendous team that forced him into early retirement (he would have every single meaningful record had he not retired early).

As a native Chicagoan, I was lucky enough to watch him at least twice a year. There just isn't a show like him.
Barry Sanders is the most fascinating NFL player ever. No one will duplicate his feats.
He is the gratest running back in history to me
It’s a shame the younger generation didn’t get to see Sanders play. Hasn’t been a running back like him since. He was special.

Honestly, he really was/is the greatest RB (so far).
Barry Sanders, the quickest 0 - full speed you will ever see. It looks like he puts 30% effort and he goes 80% speed. Just crazy.
Barry displayed the humility of a warrior spirit. No dancing after a score - just another day at the office. I show my son greatness when we watch Barry and although not apart of this video Earl Campbell’s name must be mentioned when “greatness” is mentioned.

Still rooting for them this to this day!

Barry number 20 for 20 games.

I wish Barry had won a super bowl
Julian Shipp J.R. Too bad those motherfucking Deadskins were unstoppable in 1991
