I will have to be honest. I have 7 BAT's in my 29 Gallon tank. Along with many other types of tetra species. They are good with other fish as long as they are well fed. Also suggesting they do best in planted aquariums is somewhat right and wrong at the same time. My BAT's were very aggressive before I added more. They do leave my other fish alone, but being in a planted environment may benefit them, but not you as the fish owner. You really have to choose your plants wisely because these fish will totally destroy a planted aquarium with low amounts of plants. I noticed that if you put them in planted tanks with not many plants you will absolutely notice reduced plants in your tank over time. I suggest putting a lot of plants in your tank and feed the fish on a very regular basis if you do not want aggression or plants to be eaten. Do not have carpet plants because they will devour them all within a couple of weeks! I know from experience.
Tip 1: Keep them in schools of 6 or more
Tip 2: Feed them at least once a day
Tip 3: choose hardy plants (and keep a lot of plants in the tank)
Tip 4: Do not add neons unless the tank is fully sustainable and well planted.
    Hope this helps

Just about hit every point. Especially with the plant eating! I did find adding a lot of dwarf sag. works out well. It's almost like they "mow the grass" so to speak

I have five BATs in a 20 long. They ate the Rotella and Ludwigia plants but not the Amazon sword, java fern, or crypt. Sometimes these guys go crazy in the tank, lots of chasing and whirling around at each other. They seem to get along with the five red serpae tetras, but the eight neons have found safe haven behind a piece of driftwood.

I have 9 BAT with 6 black neons with some oddballs, a betta, and some Corydoras in a 38 gallon planted. My BATs love veggies and plants. They with eat, canned (crush all of these foods before feeding) Peas, green beans. Also they will also eat very finely minced cucumbers, watermelon & spinach as well as baked sweet potato. I feed them frozen brine, bloodworms as well as flakes and pellets. Most of mine are pushing 3 inches. The tank is overstocked and over filtered, 2 50% Water changes and biweekly decor maintenance.
You have a new sub here. I've been following you for a while now and I appreciate everything that you put into your channel and your fish family. Thanks for everything Chris. You rock man keep up the great work. Much love from Gloucester MA home of the OG Fishermen.

We have a 75 gallon, not planted, but heavily decorated with plastic plants. Our original 16, bought last March when we set up the tank, are all thriving. Two eggs some how survived. They were born 1 1/2 months ago and are now sorta swimming with the pack. Exciting to watch.

@3:24 "Tetras aren't going to eat other tetras".... Umm that would be incorrect *ESPECIALLY for the Buenos Aires* .
Bought 4 of them with 6 neons. The woman at my local Petco placed them all in one large container because like you she thought "they don't eat other tetras". *The opposite is true*
I had two neons living, and only pieces of the others after a 20 min drive home.
    So they eat neon tetras!

I recently got 6 Buenos Aires Tetras along with 2 diamond tetras and 2 Colombian tetras. Since then my black neons and neon tetras have been getting killed and chewed up. Now that you say this it might be the Buenos Aires.

I keep these in my pond with koi carp and gold fish, and usually bring them indoors for the winter months. The coldest they have been at is 1.5 degrees, very cold. The swim very slow at that temperature. However they grow fast and big in the pond environment. Going to try Congo tetras in the pond next year.

I had these in the past they do well as dither fish for your average size central/american cichlids like jack dempseys, firemouths, convicts etc. the only thing is make tough to feed the other fish because they’re greedy. I disagree with keeping them in planted tanks, they eat plants

I have 6 in my 55-gallon. I also have 6 Red Eye Tetras, and 3 Red Minors. They all get along well and sometimes even school all together. The Red Tetras and Buenos Aires mix up just fine together when shoaling.
(I also have a Pearl Gourami, a Dojo Loach, SAE and Cories. Heavily planted with 3 Giant Swords, a Hygrophila Corymbosa, some red Rotala, and a few other things - Frogbit and duckweed.)
I was afraid when I first got them because of all the talk of them eating plants, but I haven't had any issues in that area. I do think they eat Duckweed, but no one will miss that. They can eat all of that they want. :) I think they ate my Cardinal plants too. Lobelia Cardinalis?
Anyways, I love them and their look. Probably not more than my new Congo Tetras I recently got, in another tank, but BAT are definitely one of the best looking Tetras I think.
Crazy how there are so many different experiences with them eating plants, etc. I also keep them well-fed. Almost every day, once a day.

most fish at the store look like crap. when you take them home and care fore them they're beauty and natural behavior comes out.
I found BA Tetras to be very robust, active, full bodied, athletic fish.... They're big and strong enough to be tough and fast enough to stay out of the way of mean tankmates

they need colder periods. winter drops to 15 degrees during a few months will keep them healther and longer alive. Buenos Aires, remember, not Rio Negro or some other tropical equatorial (do you even say that word ?) region.... 3 to 4.000 km more to the south.

I watched this video because I needed some info about my Buenos aries. It helped a lot. My tank used to be a tank with a bunch of tetras and angel fish but recently I got a baby Oscar and wanted to make sure they would be ok. After watching I’ve moved them into a different tank with all the other tetras. I just wasn’t sure about them as they are quite large but better safe than sorry 😂thanks

I have a 55g that I bought from a guy who is moving. He said he wasn't trying to keep these fish and I was planning on making a guppy tank. Will these go well in a community tank? I know you say they go well with other tetras. But would love to be able to stick a small school in the 55, like 10 or so. And have them be able to be the big group with little guppies everywhere. I'm fine with losing the fry, would be nice if a couple survived though. I'm also planning on making it a heavily planted tank.

June 2021, I bought 5 Buenos Aires Tetras, then in Nov 2021 another 3. I look in my 55G breeder tank today 1/11/2022 and there are 6 remaining. Two are missing with no remains. The larger BAT over eats and appear Beloted and has a white bulb extending at its anus. This eventually corrected itself and the anus is now flush to the body. However, its torso has dark colors at the belly. I've tried to isolate to avoid feeding this one by netting it during feeding however the fish is too fast!
The 55G tank is mosty plastic plants. I have a hard time keeping Hornwort plants in the tank that seem to be eaten.
The tank mates are: one adult Bosani Rainbow, 8 Black Skirt Tetra, 6 BAT, 2 Yoyo Loaches, and 1 Albino Brussel Pleco.

They are a beautiful fish but you better have a lot of plants or no plants at all.
