I have been watching Philosophy Tube for over 4 years now. Thank you for this wonderfully well rounded interview. Every facet that Abi shares with us is inspirational and lovely. She really is a beautiful human.
Thank you so much Abi for talking about how difficult it can be to articulate your needs as a trans person to figures of authority. It took me 2.5 years to find and reach out to the right people who could help me with legally changing my name. If I didn't have the strength to push people in my government to give me answers, I wouldn't have gotten help.
I fully transitioned socially last July after secretly working on my transition for a couple years and being out to some close friends / family. When she came out, seeing how happy she was was awesome. I had just recently had that happiness for myself and I love seeing others experience it. Never seen your stuff before Owen, but I really appreciated your interview style here. The way you just ask a thoughtful question and you gave Abi the space to answer fully without jumping in a lot is really great.
Hearing Abi talk about the people who she'd met was wonderful, all the light and learning and that people really are willing and curious and won't just immediately jump to defensiveness to something they don't understand
I actually cried when I watched her coming out video. Between how perfectly she explained the experience of many trans people while still keeping everything framed in a positive light, along with seeing someone I had just discovered in my own journey to finally come to terms with and come out about being trans now come out themselves publicly just a few weeks after I did, in such a powerfulway...... just so many emotions at once!!

I think Abi is the first trans person I've ever heard express the pure elation of coming out as trans and the positive impact its had on her life. @ambientjohnny You've either willfully ignorant on the subject or you're acting in bad faith. Abby and others like her are better suited to explain it than I am if you're genuinely curious.
Been looking forward to this all week! Unfortunately I wasn't able to watch it straight away, then had to delay it a bit longer to watch Tysky Sour live. Well worth the wait! Abi's amazing!
So much hate is born out of ignorance. The discrimination and unequal treatment trans people face every day is appalling, but a huge number of people have no idea. I'd hope everyone would be horrified if they knew.
How dare you, by supporting this guy and the comment you just made is wrong, 1, she, how dare you, is her pronoun she? 2, pretty, this makes others feel ugly 3, can’t stop looking at her shocking absolute disgrace shocking, obsession are you!
What a great interview. I don't think I've seen an Owen Jones' video before. I like that Owen asks a question and then lets Abigail give as full an answer as she wants; without interruption. Great stuff.
Getting into Philosophy over the last year (in large part thanks to Abi) has been enormously beneficial to my relationship with myself and the world around me.
I'll never forget around 10 years ago volunteering in a prison and seeing a trans woman in the men's prison and feeling horrified she was there. She had come out whilst in prison and being transferred out but it was a shock to see her stuck there and at risk. It was the same era I had recently gone vegan and found out you couldn't have vegan food in prison and it was just such a bizzare feeling that you have to advocate for your rights in prison- a place most people hope to never go- and that the majority never have to even think of in that way.
I'm so happy with this crossover!! I'm a big fan of Abi, I've learned so much from her channel over the last few years. I thought your question about the low number of people taking philosophy A Levels as compared to the near 1 million subscribers to be an interesting disconnect. I think making complex ideas relatable, and explaining their application in a contemporary setting has a lot to do with why her work is popular. I love Abi's answer about what gives her cause for hope, I welled up a bit at the end.
Hearing the story of the (well meaning yet ignorant) woman say to Abigail "So, you're transitioning into a man?" was so sweet, I audibly 'awwed'. Really glad to hear Abigail has been interviewed by the BBC, too. It's so important we have people like her being a voice in mainstream media (to counter the likes of Rowling)
Also I'd like to suggest youtuber JammieDodger (he is a British trans man) for future interview ideas. He also made a really interesting and thoughtful response to the JK Rowling controversy. Samantha Lux (trans woman, I'm pretty sure she's from the US) made a very well researched video about trans athletes, too.
@@bigbinji6145 last time I checked, infertile women and intersex women are still women. You don't have to give back your woman card if you have a hysterectomy. Defining womanhood as identity surrounding the ability to give birth is inaccurate and often even excludes cis women
@@asparagus5428 Physical sex is a lot more complicated than a simple binary and the divide between man and woman if you're determining it by biological terms is a lot more fuzzy than you'd think.
@@asparagus5428 The belief sex is simple is because we often ignore the reality of biology, a simplification for time and ease's sake. Of course there's no third sex or gamete, but sex is by definition a bimodal distribution, not a binary. Trying to impose a strict social binary onto a bimodal spectrum is ridiculous because it excludes the divergent cases from the modes. Woman is a word we apply to one of those modes, but because there's no cut off when you're dealing with a spectrum, so it's more logical to treat it as a social class, rather than a technical biological term. Of course, most women possess a certain set of biological characteristics, but even ones you'd likely consider women don't always follow those rules. Trans people don't use the term woman as a technical biological term, we use it as a term to describe a social identity often attributed to those that have gestational reproductive organs, because that's the way people use the word woman in day to day life. When I say 'Oh, I met a lovely woman at the park today', I'm not telling you that I met a person with the potential to birth young, I'm telling you that I met a person who has a gender presentation that we would typically categorise as falling under the term woman.
@@asparagus5428 I mean if you really want me to dig up some academic articles on sex I can, but it doesn't change the fact that most people don't use woman as a technical term denoting sex, but as a social identity.
Hahaha, putting points into Charisma, Abi you big nerd. Big love, haven't watched philosophy tube for a while, will have to start watching your wonderful work again.
Abi's decision making process of "could I be happy if I never did this again" is inspiring. I think this is what I subconsciously did when I made my last big career move, but I don't think I'm ever going to make decisions the same way again.
It's one of the greatest political tragedies in current UK society, how much transphobia and trans bigotry is crossing the political divide. I'm ashamed of some left of centre friends for their abhorrent views about trans people. Solidarity with Abigail and the trans community. ✊
Abhorrent views like what exactly? Women should keep their sports? Puberty blockers should be more investigated? I.e. long term effects. The pressure on young gay ppl with the current trans activism redefining their sexual orientations to being about “gender identity”?
Abi always speaks so honestly and eloquently about anything she puts her voice to. We love to see it. Also, watching Owen shamelessly flirt with his guest is an intriguing angle to this series I certainly haven't noticed before!
I've recently discovered Philosophy Tube. Abi seems so much happier and relaxed after coming out; before there was a underlying frustrated angst to her old videos that I couldn't quite place. I'm really glad that she is now able to be her real self.
Trans is socialist issue. Absolutely! All true socialists should be concerned about the erasure of millions of working class women's rights just to appease a handful of deluded narcissists and fetishists.
I not really understand this person talking about equal rights. I mean, they compared trans stuff to black civil rights movement in their coming out video... hyperbole much?
@@leafleafleaf9272 you don’t think it’s useful to compare two different fights for civil and human rights by marginalised groups? That’s not hyperbolic at all.
@@leafleafleaf9272 For one thing, she wasn't even particularly comparing the black civil rights movement to trans rights - she was just using Audre Lorde's work as a jumping off point for discussion about identity theory and her own journey with gender identity. What a great segment! I learned so much about trans rights and other raw, deeper content on Abi's channel, but I was still surprised to learn more from her in this video too. Excited to see where life takes her. Another great and insightful video Owen.
Abigail - Thank you SO much for including "thinness" in the list of privileges. Some of us "people of size" are born with, or have developed, endocrine disorders and other health complications that make it damn near impossible to be thin, even if going to extremes like a few hundred calorie a day, liquid diets and extreme exercise. Just finding a Dr. who understands and believes is a rare gift. Hearing it mentioned in public discourse on social issues is heartwarming.
Ok. I just saw your "Why Do I Hate My Self?" video. You get it. Your body could respond to that pressure and become thin (albeit to detrimental levels) ... but you get it. Appreciate you even more.
The Private Eye is mostly great, but I really, REALLY wish they'd lay off the tacit transphobia. They seem to be trying to stay neutral, under the misapprehension that one can be neutral on an issue that consists people who want to exist on one side and people who want those people not to exist on the other. I'd love to see Abi interview Hislop. I don't have any expectation of seeing that happen, but it would be fascinating.
This makes me so proud to live in New Zealand where the gender marker on your Passport is M (male) F (female), or X (gender diverse). Gender is your preference and no documentation is required. This was such an interesting interview and had a great balance of optimism and realism about the state of the UK etc etc; something I did notice though is that Owen frequently said "cisgendered" which is just not the correct word (I feel like Abi tried to subtly correct him by saying "cisgender" herself but was too polite to bring it up lmao). Just thought I would mention as subtle language differences like this can of course be very important :)
Would you mind explaining a bit more? What would be the difference between using ‘cisgenderED’ and just ‘cisgender’? Are u just saying one is not grammatically correct?
@@mlxlmewq7733 It's grammatically incorrect. It also implies that the opposite is 'transgendered' which is also not correct and just kinda weird because being trans is something that someone *is*, not *becomes*, and 'transgendered' kinda implies the latter

I have been watching Philosophy Tube for over 4 years now. Thank you for this wonderfully well rounded interview. Every facet that Abi shares with us is inspirational and lovely. She really is a beautiful human.
A crossover I wasn't expecting. "A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one"
Less so than your ignorant comment - considerably which you would know if you bothered to watch the video.
Abi looks so much happier now! Just radiating joy
Abi is fascinating to listen to. Very eloquent. Stunning girl too
A play written by Abigail....jaw dropped. Hype intensified.
Abigail's smile is unparalleled.
Yes, yes, yes. Let's promote more people like Abi!
It's such an immense weight lifted from your shoulders, you can stop pretending to be something you're not, you can drop the complicated double life you've been balancing and just be the honest, real version of yourself. It's so wonderful.
Bit late to the party but you're very pretty! c: And yes I agree completely.
Simple questions; how is "gender identity" any different from what sexist stereotypes a person feels drawn to? And, if sex and gender are separate, then why should "transitioning gender" allow MALES into FEMALE-ONLY spaces, they never changed, nor can they change, their sex. How is removing the rights of females to single-sex spaces progressive? How is centering male feelings over female rights "feminist"?
As a cis man, what got me was the character of Olly bowing out and Abi looking absolutely stunning as she walked in. Perfect use of Blackstar as well!
@@GeoNeilUK I had some whiplash, feeling as if I was mourning during a eulogy for "the man who wasn't there". Seeing Abi walk through that door made me think so much at once - how happy and confident she looked, the fact that "she" was always there and that the person I respected wasn't at all actually leaving, and yeah weaponized David Bowie is almost not fair lol.

I think Abi is the first trans person I've ever heard express the pure elation of coming out as trans and the positive impact its had on her life. The right wing love to talk about how depressed all trans people are and their very high suicide rates without ever acknowledging why that is. It's the right wing that causes that distress
Not the gender dysphoria?
@@remotefaith if it was the gender dysphoria, it could be eased by transitioning, both socially and medically. it's the people who actively stand in the way of those things that do the killing, the laws and slurs are just tools. It's the person who kills, not the gun.
@@remotefaith right wing media surely doesn't help
@@remotefaith Gender dysphoria definitely sucks, but getting on hormones and having people treat you like a human being certainly help make it painful. I'm definitely a thousand times happier after getting on hormones, and I have yet to meet a single trans person who wasn't happy with HRT.
It reminds me of GOP politicians saying that the reason they supported not certifying the 2020 election results was because so many of their constituents believed that there were problems with the election. But they fail to mention that their constituents believed in the "Big Lie" exactly because the politicians had been expressing doubts about the election results It's a circular reasoning at its finest.
I love this!! Ah, Owen, as a trans person, it’s so lovely to see your support for trans people on such a huge platform. It means the world and you’re both massive legends ❤️❤️
Fantastic interview! I love Abi so much. (I also died laughing when she said that her trans friends were like, "Yeah. We know." Because that's exactly what happened when I came out as a lesbian. "How dare you not tell me! I could have saved years of internal gay panic!")
"Putting points into Charisma"
That's a lol from me.
Abi might be trans but truly we know now that she is a nerd.
Y'all both are so sweet I didn't realise how much I needed this crossover 😭
Abigail, Natalie (Contrapoints,) and SOPHIE are the reason my egg cracked.
I had no idea some of these people were trans.
Abi is so lovely. I'm so glad she's feeling so happy. I've discovered myself as trans days before she came out and it was so inspiring
Feel embarrassed that I hadn't come across Abi betore, now subbing and looking up her past videos (between her and ContraPoints I'm getting some great insights and entertainment about a lot of topics, including Trans rights, love and respect to you both).
oh you're going to have such a great time, enjoy Philosophy Tube!

@ambientjohnny You've either willfully ignorant on the subject or you're acting in bad faith. Abby and others like her are better suited to explain it than I am if you're genuinely curious.
I'd never heard of her to be honest but what a inspiring, brave and eloquent woman
Well, you’re in for a treat! Her channel is amazing.
LOL, Abi. I have a trans daughter and I was on to you for months.
Yeah, she was setting my 'dar off months ago :-)
Found the kickass mother.
"if I didn't come out, statistically speaking, I would end up dead"
as a closeted woman, this hits deep :/
I hope everything works out for you, sister 💚
She is so pretty, can't stop looking at her...
How dare you, by supporting this guy and the comment you just made is wrong,

Owen out there flirting but seriously who wouldnt
unashamedly
@@OwenJonesTalks Abi has a long history of awakening bi tendencies in people.
Anyone who has sight!
@@daved2352 the superior form is crushing on abby both pre and post coming out
@@bloomper I certainly do. And with Natalie Wynn (Contrapoints) both before and after she transitioned.
Would really enjoy if you could have a chat with Jim Sterling sometime, Owen.
Jim is a force of nature
I can listen to Abigail talk for hours, she has so many interesting things to say and her voice is magical
Great segment, the conversation covered a lot about trans rights in Britain but also a lot about Abby specifically which is really nice.
Abi is such an inspiration to trans people everywhere, actually to any decent people anywhere. Looking forward to hearing more from her! ❤️😬
I appreciate your inclusion of "decent people" to the list. She's really awesome.
Very happy to see this crossover. I'm proud to say I've been following Abi since 2014 and she's been very formative 💗
A gift to the trans community because of her intelligence and serenity and humility. A gift for us all really .
Hahaha, putting points into Charisma, Abi you big nerd. Big love, haven't watched philosophy tube for a while, will have to start watching your wonderful work again.
*contra voice* oh we stan
hey how are you gorge?
two very pretty people talking about trans rights = an aesthetically pleasing informative 43 minutes well spent!
Are you serious or blind?
Abi's decision making process of "could I be happy if I never did this again" is inspiring. I think this is what I subconsciously did when I made my last big career move, but I don't think I'm ever going to make decisions the same way again.
It's one of the greatest political tragedies in current UK society, how much transphobia and trans bigotry is crossing the political divide. I'm ashamed of some left of centre friends for their abhorrent views about trans people. Solidarity with Abigail and the trans community. ✊
🔥🔥🤝
Centrists will be centrists.
Shame is a very self destructive emotion. Perhaps look for help dealing with such feelings.
Abhorrent views like what exactly? Women should keep their sports? Puberty blockers should be more investigated? I.e. long term effects. The pressure on young gay ppl with the current trans activism redefining their sexual orientations to being about “gender identity”?
@@leafleafleaf9272 have you considered the effects of forcing trans men to compete with cis women?
Awww, Abi's happiness always makes me cry :')
Abigail spilling that tea about women having to manage men’s emotions. Ain’t that the truth!
gender roles and expectations
Spitting facts
I've always followed Abi's philosophy tube channel, and sometimes use it as a resource for students when teaching philosophy at uni too! Top work
Just popping in to say I love Abigail's channel and she's stunningly beautiful and I'm so happy she's going to be performing The Prince!!
Such a nice convo. Abi looks so happy
Excellent, important, and informative interview. Trans is a socialist issue. Socialist first principle: let people speak for themselves.
But also, comments like these always seem to be coming from a place of "I see trans women as men playing dress up who don't actually have legitimate human rights issues they're fighting for, so I'm offended that they would dare show solidarity or speak to common points of struggle with other marginalized groups. Which is just... no.

This video felt like therapy
16:30 - that's the thing about trans joy... No matter what is thrown at you as a consequence of transition, the joy, euphoria and sense of fulfillment that living as yourself provides makes it worth it. It also exposes being closeted as the futureless abject misery that it really is.
Get out of my brain! lol, I'm only recently figuring myself out and didn't expect to see my hopes for what this means to me stated so accurately and completely
What a great segment! I learned so much about trans rights and other raw, deeper content on Abi's channel, but I was still surprised to learn more from her in this video too. Excited to see where life takes her. Another great and insightful video Owen.
Segment? Is this a satsuma to you?
@@paulmumford7595 Haha. Poor word choice on my part. Interview would be better suited.

The goodest, best vibes in this interview. Y'all are wonderful and lovely.
abi is absolutely enchanting and such a massive role model for me (AFAB but some kind of genderqueer) and so many others just by being who she is.
The correct neutral option will always be 'not my business, not my concern, and anyone who tries to make it their concern can go away'
This makes me so proud to live in New Zealand where the gender marker on your Passport is M (male) F (female), or X (gender diverse). Gender is your preference and no documentation is required. It's a bit harder to change your gender on your driver's licence though, you have to pay $38 and bring your passport with you.
...*Only* 38$ and a passport? Damn. A lot of folks would definitely kill for that definition of "hard", haha.
Been thinking about moving there, given the US is collapsing in on itself thanks to the right wingers.
I’m a new Abi fan. As an older transgender woman, I was thrilled when Abi came out. Mainly, though, I just love watching her philosophy videos. I minored in philosophy at university, so I’m familiar with a lot of what she talks about. She always gets me thinking again, while bringing back all those philosophy memories. Cheering for you, Abi, from Okinawa, Japan! Keep up the great work!
Happy to see Abigail feeling confident to share who she is. It's difficult enough to share who you are without being a public figure.
Best crossover omg I love you both so much
I love how 'yer dad' gets brought up in here but doesn't get a namecheck
I only started watching Philosophy Tube recently, and when watching the earlier episodes, I must admit I thought Oli and Abi were siblings. So pleased she is getting the word out. 56yo and still learning x
she’s played such a massive role in radicalizing me toward the left and the fact that she came out when i’ve started to make amends w my own gender identity is just incredible. she’s just such a cool person to me and this interview was really interesting
