    Please read the following comment:
    • Around :40 - Suggests that the Ottoman Empire wasn't a dynasty. This, of course, was not the case. It was a dynasty as well.
    • Around 1:01- Says that the Habsburgs inbred because they wanted their family name to be exclusive. It is more accurate to say they made strategic marriages with other branches of the family line.
    • Around 1:05 - Says inbreeding resulted in a diluted genetic pool. This should be concentrated genetic pool.
    • Around 4:50 - Says Hussar Wars. This should be Hussite Wars.
    • From 8:12 to 8:15 -The Habsburgs did not control Sweden. They also did not control all of Poland. In the late 1700s, the Habsburgs did control some parts of Poland, but there was never a Habsburg king of Poland (at least one whose claim to the throne was not contested).
    • Around 9:17 - Suggests that the Ottomans only made inroads into Europe after making an alliance with Francis I. This was not the case. The Ottomans were incredibly powerful and had already conquered parts of Europe. Francis wanted a strong ally to keep the Habsburgs at bay.
    • At 9:25 - This is the wrong picture. Ferdinand’s correct picture is located at 8:27.
Our aim is to provide an accurate presentation of history so we apologize about this and will do better for future videos.

The Habsburgs are not from Austria but from Switzerland. They are a Swiss family who took over and replaced the original Austrians called Babenbergs whose bloodline comes from Byzantine. Austria in German is called Österreich which literally means Eastern Empire. This is because the first Austrians were the Babenberg family whose lands were located East of Bavaria. To this day there are only two regions within Austria still carrying this name: Upper Austria and Lower Austria. All other regions of today's Austria were connected to it later on but had existed before or beside Austria.

Nice and entertaining video, especially regarding the early centuries of the family's ascent to power. Yes, there are a few mistakes, but for the most part, you got it right. It is impossible in a video of this length to mention or explain every ruler or event spanning over six centuries, so neglecting to mention this or that is a really unfair criticism. The thing I believe is unique about this dynasty is its cosmopolitanism, particularly in opposition to nationalism after 1800. Also the relatively light handedness the Habsburg rulers exercised for the most part toward their subjects, as comparted to, say the Romanovs or Bourbons. They managed a non-continguous, multi-cultural, multi-lingual empire until the end and its quite curious and interesting to learn how they did it.

The Spanish branch was the main branch of the family, the Hapsburgs back in Austria were part of the junior branch of the family and even then after the Austrian succession war the family lost a lot of power and prestige across Europe, even the name of the dynasty changed to the house of Habsburg-Lorraine mainly because all the descendants of the male bloodline were dead, while the only surviving members were females this also ended the rampant incest that was so characteristic of the family and the Habsburg jaw also slowly disappeared to the point that by the time of the concert of Europe it wasn't associated anymore with the family.

@Eva Hausberger Charles V did move to Spain--he died in Spain as King of Spain and Holy Roman Emperor simultaneously.
It is true the Austrian Habsburg line survived much longer through the Austro-Hungarian empire.
However, as the video notes, it was under Charles V that the Holy Roman Empire was at its largest around the world when the viceroyalties in the Americas were established. In fact it was the silver from these territories that funded much of Charles's endeavors in Europe (and later used to create the first truly global reserve currency--piece of eight). Phillip II continued the Habsburg branch in Spain under a still very large Spanish empire. The HRE title eventually passing on to other Habsburgs.
It's notable that as the Spanish Habsburgs declined, the Austrian Habsburgs consolidated more marriages with other German states and eventually France (Marie Antoinette).
From then on it would be another 100 years before the dynasty finally diminished in Austria as well.

    Somethings very odd.
For control spanning centuries and an empire this vast, I never heard the Hapsburg name until just a few years ago and I'm in my 50's.
It's almost like the writers of the history books wanted this kept quiet.
    Odd, very odd...
    Food for thought...

Nah bruh, I'm 26 and I've known about the Habsburgs since I was like 12. And I was born in South America. If you read about European history and you haven' heard the Habsburg name or their cadet branch Habsburg-Lorraine, you haven't been paying attention AT ALL... or you've been living under an effing rock...

I agree. Ever since their defeat in WW1, the Habsburgs have been swept aside by history, ignored and often portrayed as villains (especially in Bohemia, where I’m from). Which is sad, as they’re such a huge part of European history

At 9:25 is the wrong picture. This is Ferdinand I of Austria (1793-1875) and not Ferdinand I the Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire of German nation (1503 - 1564) see picture at 8:27 for the correct Ferdinand 😉 The Habsburgs never ruled Sweden and there was not a Habsburg on the Polish thrown....

This video failed my one minute rule, inside the first minute it said two stupid things 1) “the Habsburgs unlike other empires like Ottomans were not just an empire but a dynasty”, idiots the Ottomans were a dynasty, it’s literally in the name, so were the Romanovs and tens of other dynasties around their time, 2) they failed the “things every single stupid person will say” test which is in this case the Habsburg jaw, you can tell how stupid a “historian” is by how soon they say this and how serious they are about it, these guys did both inside one minute.
