Well done! I am glad you never gave up! :) Just to let you know, that after following your advice on growing avocado from seed I now have a four foot tall avocado plant!
A bit of a hint- if it is chilly in your home you can use a germination heating mat underneath so that it has the warmth you need. Also, if you are using grocery store ginger, rinse it and soak the rhizome with honey, willow branches, aloe Vera gel or aspirin as a natural rooting hormone.
I love the honesty of your videos. I've also failed to grow ginger many times, and I could never figure out why! Thank you for all your hard work for us! 😊
Hello! You just appeared on my YT recommendations. I’ve stopped the video less than 2 minutes in to say WOW! New subscriber (probably a little older than your grandad! I bet he’s proud of you!) And to hear your common sense take on the bare shelves situation and that monstrous act of national suicide that is Brexit. I keep saying our only hope is you youngsters. Now to settle down and watch this. I’ve got my ginger from Sainsbury yesterday and I made all ready to go. So glad you appeared ! And well done. A grandma! x
Oh my goodness, God lead me to your channel today. Yesterday I planted some fresh ginger and did it all wrong. After seeing your video I have a chance of getting some ginger this year. Last year my ginger developed very high leaves but just a bit of actual ginger developed. But, the ginger that did grow was amazing with a much lovelier flavor than store bought. Thank you and God Bless and keep you safe and healthy.
I love your enthusiasm in these videos! I am so excited too because my ginger sprouted on the kitchen counter and now I’m going to plant it today according to your instructions. If you can, we’d love an update on how to harvest ginger and how to keep it alive in cold climates through the winter months.
I am SO glad you posted this! I have tumeric I wanted to try this with too! It gets cold here so I think this may be my only hope in growing it in pots!
Now I can learn from you. I nursemaided mine last year, had lot of rain in Northern Ireland, relied on neighbour to push Ginger to back of deck during rain, gave up on him as lost potatoes to blight after trying everything, last thing I thought of and it was, yes, blight! Live in Ireland, where was my brain, usually having hellish migraines in bed! , Ginger was on more protected deck rain or shine not relying on unreliable neighbour, every minute I was able to I was willing it and Turmeric to grow. Did I get anything, no! Sent friends daughter lives Row of terrace houses outside Probus very wide pavement, looks like houses had small gardens. She's grown so much. She had so much Ginger, Turmeric, people asking to try, it looked beautiful, suddenly realised she had none left of her own organic to grow for this year! We laughed, she'd a huge harvest in Containers I used breathable bags, she'd great crops of everything. Me, I'd nothing. As health not good, managed some potatoes, didn't get round to sending of for organic Ginger and Turmeric. Potatoes looking good. Now waiting on stool to sit at kitchen top to cut veg and my very own potatoes for my veggie Curries! Got a lump of Ginger not washed yet as Sun Lounge hot on coolest day, as windows uncovered, I'm giving Ginger a try. You've inspired me, and I don't have to try to walk way down garden to look after it. Thank you for letting us see mistakes, and your right, every video I watched said what to do, not what not to do! That is very important as I've just learnt from you! Should have taken my sons advice brought it into Sun Lounge.
Excellent! I have three pieces of store bought ginger in pots right now and, like you, waiting for them to sprout is a mission. But as you point out, patience is the key. Down here in Johannesburg the temps are are already in the high twenties so I'm hoping my ginger will show itself sooner rather then later. Again, good job.
I failed in my first effort but about to give it another go. It's reassuring to hear that experts have their failures! Thank you for the clear tutorial.
I love your channel so much. You show the basics without trying to push tons of fancy growing gadgets. I'm trying to lower my carbon foot print and your channel makes it much easier
Haha good for you Lee! I live in tropical Indonesia and so I grow various types of ginger and other rhizomes all year round. It really is very easy to grow here in the tropics!
Great to know that Indians are your greatest subscribers outside UK. I am not from India but an Indian diaspora. Very useful information. Thank you for sharing your experience. 👍👍👍
Hi Lee, good to see you again. Definitely I'll try the bigger piece this time as I failed before by using smaller pieces. Ginger here in Sydney is tremendously expensive, general cost is about A$20.00 per kg, but some months can be A$80.00 per kg.
Namaste. Your excitement is contagious. To keep ginger fresh, bury the rhizome in slightly moist sand and place the container in a partially shaded area in your beautiful garden. Thoroughly, wash and clean before use. Repeat procedure with the remaining rhizome. Here's wishing you the best of health. Adieu.
I already do this! So cool to see this video. I literally just put the ginger in pots of compost and they grow beautifully! Lol! Interested to see your advice xx
I'm so happy I found your channel. I've tried and tried to grow ginger here in California with no luck. Your persistence has encouraged me to try again =D
Like you, I watched many ginger growing videos yet I couldn't get any growing myself. Thanks for showing the failures as well as the success at the end! Ginger is a very expensive commodity where I am (about £35/kg) so I am VERY keen on growing my own. Going to give it another try today.
Yikes that’s expensive! Here it varies as to where you buy it. At the Asian market, it’s locally grown and it’s $1.99/lb. I can get other locally grown veggies too. At the regular grocery store, it’s tiny and shipped from somewhere else and it’s 5.99/lb! I make an excuse to drive further to go to the Asian market. It’s just a 45 minute drive on way 😬
Thanks sooooo much, it’s October in UK. I think I will plant mine in February now, please make a project diary on your ginger through the coming winter, I don’t have a greenhouse and struggle keeping things dry and warm, our house isn’t big enough to take everything inside ☹️ love the diaries, thank you 👏👏
Just stumbled upon your site. What a joy you are to learn from! I'm smiling ear to ear over your enthusiasm in sharing what you do so well. Thank-you, Thank-you, Thank-you!
Thank you for this! The one thing I never did was soak it it water! I got a piece of ginger from a local Asian supermarket where I do most of my shops (it's much cheaper and I have seen the prices going up in the likes of Tesco etc plus I am lucky to live nearby) last year and planted it outside in peat free compost. It has started sprouting so fingers crossed.
Thank you for not giving up on the ginger root. I’m trying to grow some ginger too and it’s not showing any progress. I’m going to check my ginger root. I like to sauté veggies and put some ginger and garlic to the veggies. I like to add some rice too.
wow what timing! I bought ginger from the store this afternoon to give it another try. so far haven't been succesfull regrowing, let's see your vid can change that ;)
Thanks so much! I just subscribed and wish I'd found you sooner. Yours is the 1st ginger video I've seen that is realistic.I live on the east coast of the States. While the summers have great heat for the ginger, fall, winter and early spring are too cold. Brought them all inside onto heat mats at a south facing winter. Tumeric is proving much more difficult and requires much patience. Most videos make it look like a piece of cake. Not so.
I love that you highlight the mistakes and carry on. Great videos, just subbed as I'm getting ready to get into organic farming and these are enlightening.
Amazing! Can we have another update regardless of the outcome? Im too invested in this plant now 😂. Im giving this a go today April 6th 🤗. Thank you so much!
Really glad to have clicked onto your Chanel. It’s so refreshing to see honesty and highlighting what can take a very long trial process. Off to start on my ginger now 👍🏾
i am trying to grow some starts in water. 3 weeks in i have node growth. This is from organic ginger. Kept indoors as it is winter time, ambient temp @ 69 degree F. It is nice to see the slow growth from someone else because as you mentioned, a lot of other videos are "here is my root, BOOM here is my plant, BOOM, here i am eating it. If this fails i will try again in the spring as temps warm up.
Thanks for this! Living in a semi southern state in the US I worry I wont be able to grow ginger. Definitely giving it a try after watching this. Thanks for a great vid.
Thank you for showing this video, I know about the supermarket Ginger being sprayed with sprouting inhibitors, so haven't tried to grow it. I live in Devon in the UK, so not the best weather, no south-facing area in my garden, so another negative. It is December here now and a couple of pieces of Ginger were sitting my my kitchen, I went to throw them away as not good to use and was very surprised to see that 2 shoots were growing, so I put them in water and then into a pot in my kitchen, watched your video to see if I did it right and I think I did with what you advised, once again thanks.
Took a few tries for me as well, this year I got it started in the house and moved it to a small greenhouse, it's really grown, it loves the hot moist environment. I hate to bring it in when it gets colder!
I'm so happy! Congratulations. I can appreciate the feeling. I'll definitely will try growing ginger again. Just like you, my journey has been frustrating.
I would have had more success this summer growing ginger outside in a huge flowerpot if the squirrels had not unearthed it multiple times. I finally resorted to using big pieces of jagged mulch and stones as a top dressing to make it uncomfortable for squirrels to step on. Rather than harvesting it since it got off to such a late start, I left the ginger in the pot outdoors. Perhaps it will come back if the winter here in SC was mild enough.
Yay! New subber here😀 I had some start growing on my counter. Planted it outside. Saw a green spike so apparently it wintered well. Thanks for the video. Ill enjoy and learn on this channel.👍
Great video, I hope you don’t mind, I shared your videos on ginger and garlic on Facebook as I have family in Australia and wanted them to start their own vegetable growing! Take care.
love this, haven;t tried ginger yet, but my garlic is doing so well.... in the garden for the last few months... but as I am in Adelaide Australia, we are coming into spring now the green garlic leaves are still green so not sure when I can pick them, some people have told me to wait until they go all brown and die off, is that right?.
I go through ginger so much, so I am definitely going to try this. I hope I can do it now though, even though we are at the start of Autumn? Perhaps leaving it in the conservatory is the best option?
Great video! I’ve always wanted to try this so I’m going to soon. Have you ever grown okra from seeds? That’s another experiment I plan on trying soon.
Just found you on youtube. good advise and thinking about peoples money situation in the UK.. Ex pat living in cold Sweden for many decades now, looking for good tips and ideas.
I too had a slooooow start to my indoor container ginger in September- about two months. Now it’s really growing. I think it must be the sprouting inhibitor they apply (I’m in Chicago). Hopefully I will never have to buy ginger again once I’m rolling.
👍👍👍 Good job, and like you, I have failed so many times with Ginger, also, I seem to fail at Garlic, so I am hoping you have a Garlic vid somewhere. God bless.
Great video. I’ve tried to grow it several times. But I had given up. A questions. When you say warm, how warm? I have always thought this is the key to my problems. I’m in zone 8a so not do we only freeze but can get close to -15 so even keeping the house above 70 is difficult. But I want to grow ginger so I purchased a heat pad…sadly it dried out the soil so much I failed again.
I did so outdoors in Florida, USA which was pretty humid Sunny and warm with a lot of rain. It was easy but I did not harvest because we moved before the Ginger was harvested.
I planted a piece of storebought ginger on August the 5th and only yesterday saw a shoot, I was so excited!! Granted, it was winter here in NZ and Gingy was staying in the greenhouse and will remain there during our cold spring. It is in a fairly big bucket, should I just leave it in there and maybe top up with some good compost, or transplant, what do you recommend?
We can’t continuously blame Brexit! We should be growing our own instead of selling off farmlands. I come from Sussex and several farms in the area have been sold to developers. This is short sighted as we should be growing more of our own fantastic vegetables.

Love your tutorials. You are honest unlike other tutorials!
It's really useful to see the progress (or lack of) detailed, rather than skipping to the voila moment which so many people do. Another cracking show!
I love the honesty of your videos. I've also failed to grow ginger many times, and I could never figure out why! Thank you for all your hard work for us! 😊

I love it when you make Trolls look so stupid they remove their comments. Well done for handling negativity with facts and such great humour Lee. ❤😂
Sometimes I just can't allow that kinda ignorance pass me by. I didn't know they've been deleting comments? Very funny ;)
Thank you for explaining the pot size and the fact that it grows longwise.
Your joy is infectious. You've got me really excited about trying it. Thanks for the tips!

Binge watching your videos , they are so good. Very easy and as a first time veg gardener that’s what I need .
👍👍👍👍👍
Great video, im growing ginger for the first time and its growing. I have it in my polytunnel thanks for sharing and take care 🙂
Thanks from Singapore! :) now is the right time for people to learn how to self sustain 👍😊 God bless!

I have had good luck putting the ginger on a warming mat to get it to sprout. Thanks!
Thanks Lee! Nice to see you on our screens! 💚
My pleasure!!

Doing this today ! Thank you, your time is appreciated.
How’d it go ??? 🌾
Well done! I shall b having a go. Would love to learn how to grow garlic. Thank u for bringing these healthy information.
Boy, I am so struggling to get mine to do anything. Going to try again thanks to your advice.
Great video, I hope you don’t mind, I shared your videos on ginger and garlic on Facebook as I have family in Australia and wanted them to start their own vegetable growing! Take care.
Great tutorial. I often need to soak those dried out ginger pieces to plant. You can do. That as well to revive it
I’ll definitely be trying this
Brilliant ! I love this thank you for sharing your tips and great video ! Take care and keep safe too Lee 🌹
Thank you for the detailed account. There was much more, like the comments about life in England post-Brexit, which I found touching.
Love ginger. So good for you. Thanks for posting.
Good one mate. I will give it a go.
That was amazing how you got that to grow in the pot there it was good to see it there. 👍👍
Thanks 👍

I'm about to try my second attempt to grow ginger i'm sure your video will be a great help :)
You put a smile in my heart everytime , sending love
Great video! I’ve always wanted to try this so I’m going to soon. Have you ever grown okra from seeds? That’s another experiment I plan on trying soon.
I'm trying to add Okra to my cooking more before I try to grow it but I hope so in the future :)
Nice one! Keep forgetting to comment about the garlic I grew from a supermarket bulb. All from your vid, cheers!
Great personality. You definitely found your niche. Enjoy all of your videos!
Thank you from Texas! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Just found you on youtube. good advise and thinking about peoples money situation in the UK.. Ex pat living in cold Sweden for many decades now, looking for good tips and ideas.
Ginger is a real pigdog to grow in Ireland and England for me. I am now ready to try again if you can grow it I can.... Try again. Thank you
Birdy
I too had a slooooow start to my indoor container ginger in September- about two months. Now it’s really growing. I think it must be the sprouting inhibitor they apply (I’m in Chicago). Hopefully I will never have to buy ginger again once I’m rolling.
His accent is lovely ❤
Great video,I've wanted to grow ginger for a while ,1 question when do we actually start planting the ginger now or in spring ? I'm in Yorkshire.
I'd do the same as I did and start them in the house in February. They need lots of warmth so winter heating will help give you head start in Uk.
This is great. Thank you I like your step by step and telling how to grow things.
Thank you for all your great videos! Hello from Texas! 🙋🏻♀️
I ❤ love... ginger! I make ginger tea and use it my cooking 🍳 😋
👍👍👍 Good job, and like you, I have failed so many times with Ginger, also, I seem to fail at Garlic, so I am hoping you have a Garlic vid somewhere. God bless.
I actually posted my Garlic video on the community tab last night. I have several videos to help you with that so check themout. Good luck :)
Well done! I'm so excited for you. I love your enthusiasm.
Excellent, thanks for that video. I will try that here in Sacramento, Ca. I have been enjoying your videos .
Thank you for the video!
Definitely would like to see an update on your ginger!
Hello from Canada! Love your channel.
great man down to earth what a great video and thank you
I did so outdoors in Florida, USA which was pretty humid Sunny and warm with a lot of rain.
Brilliant work 👏🏻👏🏻
Great job and love your enthusiasm!!!
It also taste delicious!!
So good!
Woohoo! Well done! Do you happen to have any updates on your ginger? I'm just curious about the progress :-).
Thanks for your cheerful video.
Greetings from Prince Edward Island, Canada 🇨🇦. Much thanks. Can you also please do a video on growing tumeric?
Turmeric is Grown exactly the same way but I do have a benefits of turmeric video coming soon.
So excited to try this. We have similar climate where i live in NZ so fingers crossed . Thanks for perservering
I love NZ!! I'd move there if I could. :)
@@ProjectDiaries maybe when all this business is over, we are currently on movement restrictions due to the you know what 😒when will it end?
im learning so much from your videos
Greetings from one of your Aussie subs 👋!
You make really good videos, thanks! 😁👍
Love u from Mumbai,[India].
