A lot of people are bringing up the fact that Snape saw Lupin on the map as he entered the Whomping Willow, I put this in the script but thought it caused more confusion than anything so cut it out, but to explain: Lupin was the one who used the spell to make the map work, and Snape merely came across it (Snape obviously didn’t know the password) meaning that the map thought Lupin was using it, not Snape, meaning the Marauder’s were visible.

It is mentioned in the book that the Deathly Hallows were most likely not actually created by Death himself, but by the three brothers. You’ve just found one more reason to support that theory.

JK Rowling said that she imagined that Fred and George probably played around with the map and that the map actually helped them out too. People added some other good points to the thread if you're curious to read about it, but I suppose that's the gist of it!

I like to think the map knew that Fred and George were natural mischief makers therefore deeming them worthy of knowing it's secrets, stealing it from a person (filtch) who is the opposite of a mischief maker probably helped too
in book 6, HBP, while Harry was trying to locate Draco on the map, he couldn't make out who were & weren't in the Slytherin common room because it was too crowded & names overlayed on covered others. Given that, & given that almost always when ever Peter was with Ron, they were in an overcrowded class room, or in the overcrowded Gryffindor common room! So Fred & George, as well as harry, won't be able to notice Peter because all name-labels & dots on the map would overlay each other. & Even if they did notice Peter's name, how could they know who he is? They'd think he's just another student, & his name would be close to Ron's name on the map just as close Harry's name would be ..... Up to book 2, Peter never escaped from Ron, so they always were in a crowded room together. It's only in book 3 that Peter starts escaping from Ron, which is how Remus saw him.
@@Weqct do you realize, when HP first published is 1997, its 23 years ago, and itw swept all kind of readers from some primary schoolers to the olders moms. Harry Potter "born" in 1979 which now arround 40 years old and probably in the time sneaking arround her dating daughter and scaring the boys away as the fathers usually do. Harry Potter his self now arround the age of expecting some grandchilds.
Another theory is that Peter Pettigrew rarely step foot in the castle it was either carry in a pocket or in his cage therefore he would not be visible on the map
Okay hear me out: I think Mrs Norris is a maledictus. Just an unpleasant and intelligent cat? Yes, now she is. NOW she's a cat. I personally think she carried this rare blood curse and at some point in her life became a cat. Another little bit is that I think she was previously a caretaker at Hogwarts and that's the reason she's so willing to help and has so much sympathy for Filch. Just think about the similarities between her and Nagini! Oddly intelligent, seems to communicate with her master (parseltounge I know not my strongest piece of evidence), driven, obedient, continue as much as you like! It's also never explained when Filch got her! And when she's petrified it has the EXACT SAME EFFECT AND CURE AS IT DOES ON A HUMAN. I really want you to tell me if I'm right or wrong on this but either way I feel I made some good points. Love your channel!
It makes a lot of sense. Even if Filch only got her near the end of the marauders school careers, by the time Harry is in school she would have been at least 12-13 years old. For a normal cat, that is already pretty old. And she keeps on living until the end of the series. That would make her around 20 odd years old which is extremely old. Now granted, a cat can live that long, and even though cats don't show a lot of signs of aging, you can tell when a cat is old. Yet here she is running around the huge castle after students. Old cats don't really have that much energy and a lot of their senses start fading. So it makes a lot more sense that she was a human as opposed to an ordinary cat. She could be a magical breed (like crookshanks) and therefore have a longer lifespan than a normal cat. Still like this theory though

This doesn't make sense to me. Wouldn't they want to see each other? Also as the map prints who each person is without ever having met them how could the map then choose who it does or doesn't see (for example seeing mrs norris who is a smart cat but not crookshanks who is an equally smart creature?) it sees peeves. I think it sees the marauders as well. Pretty sure serious said he was in the streaking shack which is not on the map. This theory is full of holes. If it is smart enough to only show the marauders if they accessed the map (with the same words Fred and George use) then why isn't smart enough to realize that snake has it after lupine opened it? Or for that matter why isn't smart to blank out when it is dropped? Kid it is smart enough to label mrs. Norris who will report them why does it label all of the kids? (Harry liked to watch the map to see that Ginny was safe but never saw she was in the room of requirement. Yet he saw all of DD who were in the room of requirement. Issue here is the room of requirement is unplotable. So explain that.
As Seamus explains in the video, the map was enchanted by the marauders, of course they would want to see where Mrs Norris is on the map as she's Flich's henchman (henchcat?). With any other animal I doubt they would care. You're right though, the Shrieking Shack is not on the map - but the passageway is. The theory still holds as it's just as plausible to see them in the passageway. As for the room of requirement, the reason it wasn't on the map is literally explained by Ron and Hermione. Hermione suggests that it could have a charm protecting it so it couldn't be plotted on maps, Ron suggested that the Mauraders simply didn't know about it. Harry never saw any DD member in the Room of Requirement, rather he surmised that they were then when they disappeared off the map next to it - such is an example when he realised Malfoy was going to the Room of Requirement.
I read somewhere that anyone who didn't know that a person was an animagus weren't able to see the names of those who are in their animagus form. Like Reeta Skeeter. Harry never saw Reeta on the map when she was wandering through Hogwarts as a beetle because he didn't know she was an animagus. I read that the Marauders purposely put some sort of enchantment on the map to not allow anyone who is in an animagus form be seen on the map if the person looking at the map doesn't know they are an animagus because should the map be confiscated (which it did) then the Marauders secret will still be safe and that secret would be their number one priority to protect. Does this make sense?

Honestly I get so worried that people don't understand my explanations of things because I am 100% terrible at explaining practically anything so I always feel like I have to constantly double check to make sure people understand XD
Robert Rappole this makes sense, but I think Snape knew of Peter being an animagus in their Hogwarts days, despite him not being friends with the Marauders. Even if he didn’t then, I’m sure he knew before the events of POA, so that doesn’t really add up to me. I wont rule it out though, it makes a lot of sense and my doubts can’t be proved :)
That makes sense to me. This is why people need to read the books. The movies screwed up a lot of things and completely left out the stuff about James and his friends being the mauraders. This bothered me on so many levels. And also Fred and George were clearly observant. They would have to be in order to sneak around the way they do. Great video!

The only thing that bothered me was them leaving out Dumbledore's theory as to what the Horcruxes were, as it left Harry and the others with virtually no leads, but even then there is a reference to it in a deleted scene, so at least the film makers were aware of that part of the story

I agree with both of the people who commented before me, The more maps, the more likely it is that you will lose one. And that maybe it was just too hard, or that they were always together.
I think when the Muraurders made the map they didnt want anyone but themselves knowing where they are. I mean if I made a magic map I wouldn't want anyone to see where im going. Idk thats my little theory.
The reason Harry can see the Marauders and no one else can is because Harry is a blood relative to one of the makers of the Marauder's Map I love your theory it is awesome
Inkyminkyzizwoz How does that prove you can't see dead people on it? I do think that dead people probably don't show on the map, but what you said doesn't prove it at all.
This might also explain why Harry could see Peter in the movie. Maybe he's genetically close enough to James, aka the marauder Prongs, for the map to allow him to see the other marauders. There's also the end credits scene, where we can see Remus Lupin aka Moony on the map. Sure it may seem like it breaks the rule of marauders only being visible to other marauders on the map, but right when the credits open, we can hear Harry's voice stating the password phrase "I solemnly swear I am up to no good.", so we can assume we're looking at the map through Harry's eyes (like in the hallway with Pettigrew), who - if he's really so much like his father like everyone says - should have no problem using the map like Deer Ol' Dad.
Or Fred and George never cared about their little brother being gay, so they never brought it up. JK Rowling is okay with gays, but don't agree with transgenders. However, if a homophobic writer like me took control, Fred and George would be teasing Ron.

OZ ..yes it can't be fooled by Animagi in general, but it doesn't mean that the Marauders couldn't do an exception for themselves so they could be the only ones that could see each other when consulting the map. PS: of course it is not what JK thought and there's a plot hole. But this could easily fix it.
I think Fred and George never saw Peter Pettigrew on the map because they thought he was another kid in his year. Also, who just stalks their younger brother on a map? They were too busy with mischief to pay attention to their brother. Also, Harry probably never saw it because he never payed attention to his own dorm, why would he? He was too busy sneaking to Hogsmead, stalking Draco when he goes to the Room of Requirement, etc. My theory.
Ketchup & Gummy Bears nope, Fed n George were raised by wizards, Mr.Weasley told that the biggest bit they found of Pettigrew was a finger. Even if they didnt know THAT, they sure knew that there was nobody called Peter Pettigrew in Griffindore. Plus,they may not have voluntarily stalked Ron, but its impossible to believe that for nearly 3 years they didnt ACCIDENTALLY saw Pettigrew. Same goes for Harry. Seamus's theory is so far the best.
My theory: You can´t see people when they are animagi and you DON´T know they are animagi, that makes sense to me because the marauders could see eachother because they know they are animagi and the others can´t.
I mean anyone who has siblings knows that you would, in 5 years time, check up on them while they were sleeping on the map to see if they were really in bed or not occasionally. Especially if you could just see it without having to get up. And FRED and GEORGE of all people would never ignore the fact that some random ass man was clearly sharing a bed with Percy OR Ron 😂
My favorite theory comes from a fanfic call ‘smells like a rat’ where Fred and George convince themselves that peter is an invisible ghost that has gotten attached to Percy and Ron.
I always just assumed the individual people are tiny on the map so they were only looking to see if teachers were approaching, rather than squinting at other dorm rooms for no reason.
I think they didn’t see Peter because you can only see someone as they are walking!!!!!… Scabbers was in Ron/Percy’s pocket or his cage 99% of the time, Harry (who only in the movie!) saw him because he escaped Ron and ran around the grounds for months- plus the fact that that other 1% of the time Scabbers may have been let loose, the twins probably wouldn’t have been focusing on the people in the castle only focusing on if Snape, Filch or Mrs Norris was near Gryffindor tower or any secret passages
I have got a weird theory. Peter pettigrew saw Fred and George with the map and took his original human form and revealed how to use the map in return he asked them to not say he was the rat. 😂 He could have also changed into human form out of view and told the twins anonymously how the map worked and say there is glitch that Ron's rat is called Peter pettigrew. 🤣🤣🤣😂

Counter theory, Harry, Ron, Fred and George knew scabbers as scabbers so he showed up as scabbers on the map. However Lupin knew him as Peter pettigrew so that's the name lupin saw.:.

The Reader Vlogs but they didn’t look at scabbers in person and see peter, they saw scabbers. I know I’m splitting hairs but after they realised scabbers was Peter they would have looked at the rat and seen peter.

Brilliant theory! There's only one thing that's not clear to me... The caretaker was a different one at the time because Molly (The Weasleys mother) says in the fourth book that they had a different caretaker at the time, which means that Mrs Norris couldn't be there (that is assuming that Molly, Arthur and the Marauders are around the same age. Snape is around 30 something and Molly and Arthur, since they had so many kids they must have had Bill at an early age, around 20 something, which means when they had their last child they must be around 30 something)
CR_GirlyGamer well.. we don’t know how old Bill is, but Charlie left Hogwarts the year before Harry started which would put him at the age eighteen in 1990... which would mean that he was born in the year 1972. We know that Bill is older.. not how much older though so if we assume that he is just one year older he would be born in 1971... and we also know that Snape’s birthday was 9th of January 1960 which puts his and the marauders’ first year at Hogwarts in 1971... so at the very last Molly and Arthur could’ve had their seventh year at Hogwarts during the marauders’ first year, but that would mean that Mrs. Weasley got pregnant during her sixth year at Hogwarts which I personally finds unlikely so it is plausible that the caretaker she talks about retired (or something) right after she and Arthur finished Hogwarts. Jesus that was a lot of math 😂
Bill was born in 1970 and Arthur and Molly are around ten years older than James and Lily. So while there was a different caretaker during Molly's time, Filch was there during the Marauders' time.

I've always thought that Peter magically fooled the Map, and he had to do it quite regularly. So, when he left, the magic started to fade and harry started seeing him.
Omg and that’s why no one ever saw Sirius on the map except for Lupin. I always wondered why Harry didn’t immediately see him on the map and tell Dumbledore.
It's a good theory. Personally, I just think that George and Fred were too focused on pranking teachers and probably didn't bother to keep tabs on their brother, or since they were so willing to give the map to Harry, perhaps they didn't use it enough to spot Peter and Harry never noticed it because he was too indulged in his own purposes for the map. Just a personal opinion though, it's always interesting to hear other theories on these unanswered mysteries.
I may have a plausible theory to answer you dilemma: 1) Fred and George pilfered the map, but took some time to figure out how to read it; 2) Percy had no clue that Scabbers was not a real rat, but an unregistered animagus named Peter Pettigrew; 3) Fred & George were not specifically looking for Pettigrew so they never payed any attention to the name being on the map; 4) Fred and George nor Percy never learned the read name of the Marauders or the back story about them; and finally.... 5) Harry only recognized Pettigrew's name after evesdropping on Fudge's meeting with McGonagoll and Rosemerta about Sirius killing Pettigrew.
It has nothing to do with whether they were looking for Pettigrew or would recognize his name. That's irrelevant. They'd have been checking out the whereabouts of Ron and/or Percy and notice the name Peter Pettigrew being ALWAYS near them, even when they slept. They'd have known this wasn't someone in Gryffindor, so they'd be curious. Especially given Percy's somewhat stick in the mud attitude, you don't think they'd have kept track of where he was when they were out pranking?
And it’s also irrelevant that Harry didn’t know who Peter was before, he would still see a man named Peter Pettigrew in his dormitory, which would make him suspicious IF he could actually see him on the map at all. I think Seamus’s theory is pretty legit
I always just thought, why would Fred and George be looking for their brother on the map? Surely they had better things to do than be keeping tabs on Ron or Percy. And we also don't know how often Percy had Scabbers with him. He could have just kept him in the dormitories at all times, so even if Fred and George were trying to find Percy to make sure he wasn't around to witness one of their schemes he might not have had Scabbers with him and therefore there was nothing to see. And as for Harry, same thing. He and Ron were almost always together, so it's not strange to me that he never saw Pettigrew's name. Why would he need to look on the map for someone who was almost always right next to him.
Maybe Mrs. Norris is visible because Peter’s animagus was a rat and cat’s chase rats and eat them so maybe it was so Peter did not get eaten by Mrs. Norris when he was an animagus.
I thought the movies actually filled this one in quite nicely. The books describe the map with single dots labelled with a person's name. The movies clearly show footprints and imply that people show up on the map when they're in motion. (Seamus's book quote specifically stating that Dumbledore was pacing in his office also seems to support this.) Teachers usually show up moving towards Harry at night, Barry Crouch Jr showed up very shortly after appearing on the map (in Moody's guise). If there's an instance of anyone showing up on the map while standing completely still, please let me know. Since Ron was carrying Scabbers or Scabbers was sleeping during the times Fred and George "should have seen him" or "it would have looked suspicious", Peter never showed up. He only appeared on the map after he had escaped and was moving around the castle of his own volition.
This is my favourite explanation by far. And makes so much sense. Why would Marauders be interested in tracking sleeping people? They wanted to know if anyone's coming to catch them in the act of sneaking around and pranking. I am also not sure if dormitories were even included? I know it shows Slytherin common room, so probably it does includes every room but the Room of Requirement, but also would not be surprised if they did not bother with sleeping quarters?

A quick Google search.... "between 13 and 17 years, according to the ASPCA. However, it isn't uncommon for indoor cats to live to at least 20. The lifespan always depends on the individual cat." Not uncommon at all for cats to live more then 20 years, I've known several people that had their cat for over 20 years. And if you look up the record for the oldest cat, I believe it lived to be 38 years old.

It doesn't really matter much and wouldn't disprove anything, but say the marauders did include mrs. norris in the map, shouldn't she be at least 20 years old, maybe even older? It's possible but really unusual for a normal house cat.
Is she a regular house cat or what are they called measles? Or something like that Harry's squib neighbor crossbreads regular cats and the magic cats and there's sufficient evidence that hermiones cat is the same cat james and lily potter owned witch would also make hermiones cat pretty damn old

I always just assumed that Fred and George didn't care what Ron was up to?? Like, when I'm at school, I don't constantly check on my brother to see what he's doing. I'd imagine the Weasley siblings tend to leave each other alone at school, since they spend all their time together at home, and at school they probably want to make their own friends and do their own thing, you know? Also, Fred and George would probably have been more preoccupied with looking for secret passageways in the school and making sure Filch/Mrs Norris/other teachers couldn't catch them, so they wouldn't have been looking at Gryffindor Tower or Ron's dormitory. But this theory definitely sounds more interesting than just "they didn't notice" or "they weren't looking" :P
He didn’t understand what had happened at the time. He didn’t know his mother was dying, all he knew was there was a scary figure in his room and that his mom was in distress. Toddlers don’t understand death.
True. People think the map was designed automatically to show everyone, but they tracked everyone and why would they track themselves. They never placed their whereabouts on the map, or if they did, only they could see it. That is the smart thing to do. I like this theory

JK Rowling said that she imagined that Fred and George probably played around with the map and that the map actually helped them out too. in book 6, HBP, while Harry was trying to locate Draco on the map, he couldn't make out who were & weren't in the Slytherin common room because it was too crowded & names overlayed on covered others. Given that, & given that almost always when ever Peter was with Ron, they were in an overcrowded class room, or in the overcrowded Gryffindor common room! So Fred & George, as well as harry, won't be able to notice Peter because all name-labels & dots on the map would overlay each other. & Even if they did notice Peter's name, how could they know who he is? They'd think he's just another student, & his name would be close to Ron's name on the map just as close Harry's name would be .....
Up to book 2, Peter never escaped from Ron, so they always were in a crowded room together. It's only in book 3 that Peter starts escaping from Ron, which is how Remus saw him.

Yes, now she is. NOW she's a cat. I personally think she carried this rare blood curse and at some point in her life became a cat. Another little bit is that I think she was previously a caretaker at Hogwarts and that's the reason she's so willing to help and has so much sympathy for Filch. Just think about the similarities between her and Nagini! Oddly intelligent, seems to communicate with her master (parseltounge I know not my strongest piece of evidence), driven, obedient, continue as much as you like! It's also never explained when Filch got her! And when she's petrified it has the EXACT SAME EFFECT AND CURE AS IT DOES ON A HUMAN. I really want you to tell me if I'm right or wrong on this but either way I feel I made some good points. Love your channel!

It makes a lot of sense. Even if Filch only got her near the end of the marauders school careers, by the time Harry is in school she would have been at least 12-13 years old. For a normal cat, that is already pretty old. And she keeps on living until the end of the series. That would make her around 20 odd years old which is extremely old. Now granted, a cat can live that long, and even though cats don't show a lot of signs of aging, you can tell when a cat is old. Yet here she is running around the huge castle after students. Old cats don't really have that much energy and a lot of their senses start fading. So it makes a lot more sense that she was a human as opposed to an ordinary cat. She could be a magical breed (like crookshanks) and therefore have a longer lifespan than a normal cat. Still like this theory though

Just one problem. Snape sees Lupin on the map and follows him into the Shrieking shack.
This doesn't make sense to me. Wouldn't they want to see each other? Also as the map prints who each person is without ever having met them how could the map then choose who it does or doesn't see (for example seeing mrs norris who is a smart cat but not crookshanks who is an equally smart creature?) it sees peeves. I think it sees the marauders as well. Pretty sure serious said he was in the streaking shack which is not on the map. This theory is full of holes. If it is smart enough to only show the marauders if they accessed the map (with the same words Fred and George use) then why isn't smart enough to realize that snake has it after lupine opened it? Or for that matter why isn't smart to blank out when it is dropped? Kid it is smart enough to label mrs. Norris who will report them why does it label all of the kids? (Harry liked to watch the map to see that Ginny was safe but never saw she was in the room of requirement. Yet he saw all of DD who were in the room of requirement. Issue here is the room of requirement is unplotable. So explain that.
As Seamus explains in the video, the map was enchanted by the marauders, of course they would want to see where Mrs Norris is on the map as she's Flich's henchman (henchcat?). With any other animal I doubt they would care. You're right though, the Shrieking Shack is not on the map - but the passageway is. The theory still holds as it's just as plausible to see them in the passageway. As for the room of requirement, the reason it wasn't on the map is literally explained by Ron and Hermione. Hermione suggests that it could have a charm protecting it so it couldn't be plotted on maps, Ron suggested that the Mauraders simply didn't know about it. Harry never saw any DD member in the Room of Requirement, rather he surmised that they were then when they disappeared off the map next to it - such is an example when he realised Malfoy was going to the Room of Requirement.

I read somewhere that anyone who didn't know that a person was an animagus weren't able to see the names of those who are in their animagus form. Like Reeta Skeeter. Harry never saw Reeta on the map when she was wandering through Hogwarts as a beetle because he didn't know she was an animagus. I read that the Marauders purposely put some sort of enchantment on the map to not allow anyone who is in an animagus form be seen on the map if the person looking at the map doesn't know they are an animagus because should the map be confiscated (which it did) then the Marauders secret will still be safe and that secret would be their number one priority to protect. Does this make sense?

Robert Rappole this makes sense, but I think Snape knew of Peter being an animagus in their Hogwarts days, despite him not being friends with the Marauders. Even if he didn’t then, I’m sure he knew before the events of POA, so that doesn’t really add up to me. I wont rule it out though, it makes a lot of sense and my doubts can’t be proved :)
That makes sense to me. This is why people need to read the books. The movies screwed up a lot of things and completely left out the stuff about James and his friends being the mauraders. This bothered me on so many levels. And also Fred and George were clearly observant. They would have to be in order to sneak around the way they do. Great video!

The only thing that bothered me was them leaving out Dumbledore's theory as to what the Horcruxes were, as it left Harry and the others with virtually no leads, but even then there is a reference to it in a deleted scene, so at least the film makers were aware of that part of the story

This might also explain why Harry could see Peter in the movie. Maybe he's genetically close enough to James, aka the marauder Prongs, for the map to allow him to see the other marauders. There's also the end credits scene, where we can see Remus Lupin aka Moony on the map. Sure it may seem like it breaks the rule of marauders only being visible to other marauders on the map, but right when the credits open, we can hear Harry's voice stating the password phrase "I solemnly swear I am up to no good.", so we can assume we're looking at the map through Harry's eyes (like in the hallway with Pettigrew), who - if he's really so much like his father like everyone says - should have no problem using the map like Deer Ol' Dad.

Snape saw Lupin on the map, because the map was already "activated" by Lupin and not by him (he doesn't know how to do it).
OZ ..yes it can't be fooled by Animagi in general, but it doesn't mean that the Marauders couldn't do an exception for themselves so they could be the only ones that could see each other when consulting the map. PS: of course it is not what JK thought and there's a plot hole. But this could easily fix it.

Even if they didnt know THAT, they sure knew that there was nobody called Peter Pettigrew in Griffindore. Plus,they may not have voluntarily stalked Ron, but its impossible to believe that for nearly 3 years they didnt ACCIDENTALLY saw Pettigrew. Same goes for Harry. Seamus's theory is so far the best.

My theory: You can´t see people when they are animagi and you DON´T know they are animagi, that makes sense to me because the marauders could see eachother because they know they are animagi and the others can´t.
I mean anyone who has siblings knows that you would, in 5 years time, check up on them while they were sleeping on the map to see if they were really in bed or not occasionally. Especially if you could just see it without having to get up. And FRED and GEORGE of all people would never ignore the fact that some random ass man was clearly sharing a bed with Percy OR Ron 😂
My favorite theory comes from a fanfic call ‘smells like a rat’ where Fred and George convince themselves that peter is an invisible ghost that has gotten attached to Percy and Ron.
I always just assumed the individual people are tiny on the map so they were only looking to see if teachers were approaching, rather than squinting at other dorm rooms for no reason.

I think they didn’t see Peter because you can only see someone as they are walking!!!!!… Scabbers was in Ron/Percy’s pocket or his cage 99% of the time, Harry (who only in the movie!) saw him because he escaped Ron and ran around the grounds for months- plus the fact that that other 1% of the time Scabbers may have been let loose, the twins probably wouldn’t have been focusing on the people in the castle only focusing on if Snape, Filch or Mrs Norris was near Gryffindor tower or any secret passages

There's only one thing that's not clear to me...
The caretaker was a different one at the time because Molly (The Weasleys mother) says in the fourth book that they had a different caretaker at the time, which means that Mrs Norris couldn't be there (that is assuming that Molly, Arthur and the Marauders are around the same age.
Snape is around 30 something and Molly and Arthur, since they had so many kids they must have had Bill at an early age, around 20 something, which means when they had their last child they must be around 30 something)
CR_GirlyGamer well.. we don’t know how old Bill is, but Charlie left Hogwarts the year before Harry started which would put him at the age eighteen in 1990... which would mean that he was born in the year 1972. We know that Bill is older.. not how much older though so if we assume that he is just one year older he would be born in 1971... and we also know that Snape’s birthday was 9th of January 1960 which puts his and the marauders’ first year at Hogwarts in 1971... so at the very last Molly and Arthur could’ve had their seventh year at Hogwarts during the marauders’ first year, but that would mean that Mrs. Weasley got pregnant during her sixth year at Hogwarts which I personally finds unlikely so it is plausible that the caretaker she talks about retired (or something) right after she and Arthur finished Hogwarts.

Bill was born in 1970 and Arthur and Molly are around ten years older than James and Lily. So while there was a different caretaker during Molly's time, Filch was there during the Marauders' time.

I've always thought that Peter magically fooled the Map, and he had to do it quite regularly. So, when he left, the magic started to fade and harry started seeing him.
Omg and that’s why no one ever saw Sirius on the map except for Lupin. I always wondered why Harry didn’t immediately see him on the map and tell Dumbledore.

Personally, I just think that George and Fred were too focused on pranking teachers and probably didn't bother to keep tabs on their brother, or since they were so willing to give the map to Harry, perhaps they didn't use it enough to spot Peter and Harry never noticed it because he was too indulged in his own purposes for the map.
Just a personal opinion though, it's always interesting to hear other theories on these unanswered mysteries.

I may have a plausible theory to answer you dilemma:
1) Fred and George pilfered the map, but took some time to figure out how to read it;
2) Percy had no clue that Scabbers was not a real rat, but an unregistered animagus named Peter Pettigrew;
3) Fred & George were not specifically looking for Pettigrew so they never payed any attention to the name being on the map;
4) Fred and George nor Percy never learned the read name of the Marauders or the back story about them; and finally....
5) Harry only recognized Pettigrew's name after evesdropping on Fudge's meeting with McGonagoll and Rosemerta about Sirius killing Pettigrew.
It has nothing to do with whether they were looking for Pettigrew or would recognize his name. That's irrelevant. They'd have been checking out the whereabouts of Ron and/or Percy and notice the name Peter Pettigrew being ALWAYS near them, even when they slept. They'd have known this wasn't someone in Gryffindor, so they'd be curious. Especially given Percy's somewhat stick in the mud attitude, you don't think they'd have kept track of where he was when they were out pranking?
And it’s also irrelevant that Harry didn’t know who Peter was before, he would still see a man named Peter Pettigrew in his dormitory, which would make him suspicious IF he could actually see him on the map at all. I think Seamus’s theory is pretty legit

I always just thought, why would Fred and George be looking for their brother on the map? Surely they had better things to do than be keeping tabs on Ron or Percy. And we also don't know how often Percy had Scabbers with him. He could have just kept him in the dormitories at all times, so even if Fred and George were trying to find Percy to make sure he wasn't around to witness one of their schemes he might not have had Scabbers with him and therefore there was nothing to see. And as for Harry, same thing. He and Ron were almost always together, so it's not strange to me that he never saw Pettigrew's name. Why would he need to look on the map for someone who was almost always right next to him.
Maybe Mrs. Norris is visible because Peter’s animagus was a rat and cat’s chase rats and eat them so maybe it was so Peter did not get eaten by Mrs. Norris when he was an animagus.

I thought the movies actually filled this one in quite nicely. The books describe the map with single dots labelled with a person's name. The movies clearly show footprints and imply that people show up on the map when they're in motion. (Seamus's book quote specifically stating that Dumbledore was pacing in his office also seems to support this.) Teachers usually show up moving towards Harry at night, Barry Crouch Jr showed up very shortly after appearing on the map (in Moody's guise). If there's an instance of anyone showing up on the map while standing completely still, please let me know.
Since Ron was carrying Scabbers or Scabbers was sleeping during the times Fred and George "should have seen him" or "it would have looked suspicious", Peter never showed up. He only appeared on the map after he had escaped and was moving around the castle of his own volition.
This is my favourite explanation by far. And makes so much sense. Why would Marauders be interested in tracking sleeping people? They wanted to know if anyone's coming to catch them in the act of sneaking around and pranking. I am also not sure if dormitories were even included? I know it shows Slytherin common room, so probably it does includes every room but the Room of Requirement, but also would not be surprised if they did not bother with sleeping quarters?

Not uncommon at all for cats to live more then 20 years, I've known several people that had their cat for over 20 years. And if you look up the record for the oldest cat, I believe it lived to be 38 years old.

I really like this theory and I think it makes a lot of sense. There is only one thing that bothers me, maybe someone can help me out. It doesn't really matter much and wouldn't disprove anything, but say the marauders did include mrs. norris in the map, shouldn't she be at least 20 years old, maybe even older? It's possible but really unusual for a normal house cat.

I always just assumed that Fred and George didn't care what Ron was up to?? Like, when I'm at school, I don't constantly check on my brother to see what he's doing. I'd imagine the Weasley siblings tend to leave each other alone at school, since they spend all their time together at home, and at school they probably want to make their own friends and do their own thing, you know? Also, Fred and George would probably have been more preoccupied with looking for secret passageways in the school and making sure Filch/Mrs Norris/other teachers couldn't catch them, so they wouldn't have been looking at Gryffindor Tower or Ron's dormitory. But this theory definitely sounds more interesting than just "they didn't notice" or "they weren't looking" :P

True. People think the map was designed automatically to show everyone, but they tracked everyone and why would they track themselves. They never placed their whereabouts on the map, or if they did, only they could see it. That is the smart thing to do. I like this theory
