I've built a good many of these since prior to the turn of the century and enjoy the pride that comes when someone builds it themselves. I'm experienced so I would have done it a bit differently but you did a good job and the main concerns were already stated in prior comments. Such as the need to vent the explosive gases. At my age I enjoy giving advice so it gets done right. There are very few of us professional kybo builders around and feel free to ask. It don't cost a thing and we can perpetuate an old craft. Once again, you done well.

Thanks for the advice it’s greatly appreciated. I didn’t have any PVC at the cabin that week but eventually I put a vent. I still get quite a bit of humidity in the outhouse in the winter months, any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for watching

Don't forget some type of Landing Pad outside the door so you're not stepping in mud and bringing it in and out.

Great build Karl. A vent pipe from the pit to above the roof will help with the smell and my grandpa always kept a bucket of lime in there with ya. The big boys put out there camels in there but it was mainly to throw a scoop in the pit to help with neutralizing the pee smell.

I live on the Navajo Reservation in Arizona i built an outhouse for a neighbor who came back from Phoenix after being in the Valley for 30 yrs and his aunt bought him a portable building and he lacked an outhouse (no building codes on the Rez). I just used some old usable boards. His relatives don't know how to build an outhouse but im using my outhouse building experience when i was a youngster. Im thinking ill put some vents near the ceiling and curigated metal on top. Maybe I'll cut out a half-moon on his outhouse door. And most definitely a coffee can to protect his toilet tissue from mice. Maybe put up a landing pad by the entrance...and solar powered lighting. Fly sticky tape. Some people on our rez still lack modern conveniences like running water. I've built many for people in our community.

Nice Job Karl! Well built{ of course} and really like the roof! I hunted at a camp years ago that lined the seat with wool socks, worked well. Also, I currently hunt a camp that keeps a buddy heater inside. Whoever gets up first in the morning turns it on low for the camp. When we hit the woods it gets turned off. VERY cozy. Thanks for sharing and enjoy!

Buy some scrap linoleum pieces and put it on the entire top area where you sit, and also down the front and the floor. That can be cleaned a lot easier than wood. Most kids and all males seem to have a problem hitting a toilet. No seams anywhere are important.

Carl would a vent pipe (like in a porta Jon) help with the smell? Probably wouldn’t want to make a hole in the roof but maybe out the top of the wall? If you ever have problems with porcupines chewing on the wood you can always wrap the bottom with some type of stainless steel tin or something later on. And for those that don’t know you can keep a bucket of lime to sprinkle over to help break it down and help with odors.💩

I grew up with one a bit like that - we used a bucket full of ashes from the woodstove to help with the smell. Fancy store-bought paper to clean up with mostly, but I wound up using a mullein leaf or two in a pinch :p Ours was built on skids, so we could relocate it when it became necessary.

◽Grow some insect repelling plants outside around it, maybe even small pots near the interior ceiling.
◽Wrap the bench and floor in galvanized sheet metal too for easier cleaning, and protecting the wood. The entire inside could be a galvanized skin with the wood bracing on the exterior.
◽Vent from below the bench to out above the roof. Composting will generate heat and cause the fumes to rise.
◽Plastic coffee "cans" with a lid are great for holding a roll of dry toilet paper.

Trying to build one near Bangor and I’ve been told that it’s state law to get a soil test done and design from a soil scientist before building one. Great to hear from you James. Unfortunately with the high prices of lumber I had just under $300 into the build. When lumber prices come back down you could probably build The same building for a fraction of that price.

Hey Karl, what do you know about incinerator toilets, and what’s your opinion? I am looking at putting one in on my property. We have a building that has everything but sewer.

Hey! It is so awesome to hear from you! I don’t know much about incinerator toilets but something you may want to check out are composting toilets. There is a company called “Biolet” that makes excellent composting toilets, I can’t recommend them enough. They are very clean and easy to maintain and They have no disgusting smells. They are a little bit pricey but they are much cheaper than putting in a brand new sewer. Let me know if it works out for you. My email is in my channel description if you need any more advice. Say hi to Mike and the family for me!!

It’s called “LP smart siding“ it is a composite of wood and concrete, mice won’t chew through it. You can buy it at any big box hardware store it is very common. Thanks for watching and commenting

Idea for you: You should do what they did during the mid evil times: build a castle and have the holes on the second floor of the castle, the hole of the toilet is above a river or lake, so you will need to build your castle around water. Glad I could help!

WHAT HAPPENED TO LINING THE HOLE⁉️ THAT CLEAR POLY ON THE ROOF WILL EASILY CRACK AND COLLAPSE UNDER A SNOW LOAD‼️

    • @karlsoffthegrid1378
      @karlsoffthegrid1378  Рік тому

Great questions. Our soil composition where I dug the hole is hard clay with a sand at the base. We have dug several of these over the years and the walls have never collapsed doing it this way. Our last outhouse at our lake property is 50 years old and still going strong.
We get a ton of snow up here in the north and with the huge snow loads I can report the roof is still in great condition.. We’ve made sure to add enough pitch and wood backing to support the roof and the snow easily slides off.
