  • I guess I didn't really realize what day it was, but when speaking to my brother he reminded me. It was 3 months ago that my mom passed away. It's kind of fitting that the piano sound that is in this track sounds just like our old out of tune piano at my old house (the piano is now gone, I don't know what happened to it). Every Sunday I still get this "oh, I gotta get ready - Mom's going to call me." moment, before I realize that I never will get those Sunday night calls again. I think for the rest of my life I'll at least think to some degree that she's going to call me. Of course, I've certainly realized just how quick time goes by. It doesn't feel like more than a week ago, and yet, it feels like forever ago. Our brains must have the hardest time processing time. At least mine does.
Well, as you've guessed - I re-bought my old Ensoniq Mirage. And wow it took me hours to remember how to use the thing (still can't quite figure out how to select upper and lower patches). I compared the Mirage to the EPS as well - and geez, it's almost no comparison. The Mirage sounds like way better than the EPS, but the EPS is way easier to use. I kinda think if one thing had to go it would be the EPS. I like what it can do, and the ease with which it can do it, but if the end result isn't entirely inspiring, I'd be reaching for the Mirage 90% of the time. But... maybe the EPS has some tricks up its sleeves. What I find the Mirage does is somehow manage to sound broken, out of tune, and at the same time have this nice hi-fi sound. The EPS sounds muffled in comparison (I actually re-wrote this track sampling into the EPS the same way, but decided not to include it in this track... maybe that was a mistake).

I feel the content of your loss my friend. When my mother lost her cognitive function from dementia, and eventually her life, I was unable to process day to day life, and felt lost. Time does help with loss of a loved one, but doesn't make up for the precious memories we still long for, and cherished when that loved one was alive. I enjoyed your piano piece, I'm glad you have your Mirage back. Carpe diem my friend, and Cheers!

Yeah, I honestly can’t imagine seeing someone lose their memories like that. I think it was probably a blessing both my parents were themselves when they went. They both had to let go, but they were mostly in charge of their fates (if you can call any of it choice). I’m sorry to hear about that.
The mirage is simply one of the most interesting instruments I’ve had. Sucks I’ve sold it so many times and the last time I recorded anything with it was 4 years ago in 2020. That surprised me. It isn’t easy to use, but the end result is just very fun.

Another great track-glad the mirage clearly inspires you! Lovely to listen too. I have only rebought one synth , the roland jdxa which was a mistake to sell…

Oh cool. I’ve heard good things about it, but never found them for sale locally so I haven’t purchased one.

One thing i love with this machines is the limits they impose, so you NEED to be creative to make things work. For example, I enjoy trying to make a decent sequence with the Emax internal sequencer and then play on top of that, assigning different outputs to every sound, dealing with memory limits. That’s one entire weekend’s afternoons.

Yeah, I find the EPS does this much better with its sequencer, but I also don’t really like using sequencers from most keyboards. They seem difficult and archaic to me! But I did try it out. It gets awkward because I don’t know what to do when I’m done and it keeps recording, so it’s awkward to start cycling. Ah well, just need to do more research.

Sounds great. My taste in drums is so finicky, but I love them all low-rent and crunchy like this. ...I don't have any Ensoniq, sadly, but FB's algorithm sends me posts from an Ensoniq group I don't belong to. I lurk-observed some Ensoniq enthusiasts discussing how the ESP+ was the 'hands down' favorite of many. Of course I'm a weirdo so I want a Fizmo ...even though I read you can basically do most of what a Fizmo can do with some other combo of Ensoniq gear for half the price. But the MEMES. I need the memes. I want that meme machine right next to a PEK.

Fizmo always interested me, but I had heard the OS was somewhat incomplete and there are lots of things that don’t work or are done in an odd way to not be useful. I stopped looking for one after that. Maybe it would be cool, I’m not sure. Then again, I’ve never used the EPS16+ either. Or ESQ for that matter!

Cool piano warble. Are the filters comparable on the EPS and MIrage?

The mirage filters are analog while the EPS has digital non resonant filters. Even if you open them up completely the sound is entirely different due to their bit and sampling rates.
The charm of the mirage is somewhere beyond just its filters I think, although they are great filters.
      Thanks.
