- Since I've been making a few demos of the #Mother32 in my recent videos, I thought it might be interesting to share my experience with this amazing modular synthesizer, and hopefully inspire you on your own musical journey. On how to use the Moog mother-32.
When I first started using the Mother-32, I was so eager to dive in that I realized I had overlooked some basic principles. As my first modular synth, it took some trial and error, but I'm glad I persevered. The Mother-32 now holds a special place in my setup.

For me, the Mother 32 got a lot more useful when I got a second one about a year and a half after the first. I got each for the same price used - equivalent to about $485 USD. While one is nice on its own with reverb, having two creates such a wonderful monosynth even without effects. Being able to patch a second oscillator to FM the other's filter/resonance, use them in stereo, being able to use the absolutely beautiful sounding HPF (seriously, it's lovely and underrated) and the low pass as well, or even just doubling up on the oscillators an octave apart to make a much more lively patch. Being able to modulate one LFO with the next, or even get creative and make a full ADSR with the two using a patch bay and mixer, has been quite a fun way to learn modular. It's a beautiful unit for sure.
Also, if you can get a midi thru box and connect both to your keyboard, you can play them duophonically - but what I prefer to do is treat them as a mono synth and set up the assignable output on one to output voltage from the mod wheel and on the other to output voltage from velocity. You can get really expressive this way and it truly becomes a fully featured, 2 oscillator monosynth with a bunch of unique tricks up its sleeve.

Heh, just wait until you add a DFAM to it. Two extra oscillators, two extra sequencers for modulation, hard sync, 1-2 FM, triangle waves... its such a fat sound.
Subharmonicon interests me a little bit, not sure if it fits my music style though... if it weren't for space I'd probably add it, but these two are already absolutely stunning as far as sound output is concerned.

Dude hae you tried the mother 32 with the meris HEDRA…it a blast you can get. Some insane stuff and it takes quarter inch midi connection,amazing-try it !
I find the mother 32 intuitive and accessible up to a point. Then there's room left for exploration, leading to interesting unexpected outcomes. I have all 3 modules but I'm mostly drawn to mother 32 of them all. After over 3 years with them all, there is still more left to explore and that is one of the main reasons I bought them, longevity.
I'm still very overwhelmed and honestly intimidated by all the options and features of the mother 32.
Hopefully we can have more mother 32 videos, going in depth, share your lessons, tips and tricks.

Thank you so much for this video. I nearly sold mine and I will be truthful....I did not give it my full concentration and I did not try hard enough. I was lazy and started to look for easier options ( GAS).

You are so right. So so correct in what you said and I have now cleared my desk and put the mother 32 on there and will study it instead of trashing it.
The whole damned reason I bought it was to give me something to do and to learn.
Most give up on the sequencer!

So cool 🔥😎 I think i will buy one. I have the Moog Minitaur since 2012 now and it’s also great but i really love the mother32 because the semi modular thing - the Patchbay and the sequencer. Great Video! 🤙🏼🙂

Always wanted a Minotaur to use with the Moogerfooger effects. Such a sweet bass synth. The Sirin looked cool too with the expanded high note range (but I think it was missing the full powerful bass that the Minotaur has)

You find the sub harmonicon more approachable than the M32?
@@GeorgeLocke yes for me. Sequencing on the M32 is still now a hard process for me. But I learn these days to use It more and better.
I really like my Mother32, DFAM, SubHarmonicon combo... but I have yet to master the sequencer on the Mother-32.
Yes, it can definitely take some time, but don't worry - it's worth the effort! Start with simple patterns and work your way up from there. Would love to have a video on the patch starting at around 2:30. Sounds like it may be the same patch starting around 3:40 with longer decay.
Thanks for your comment! The patch at 2:30 and 3:40 are indeed very similar - they share some of the same elements. However, there are some differences in the use of the EXT.AUDIO, the LFO and other parameters that create a slightly different sound. I'll keep this in mind for a possible future video where I can break down these patches in more detail. Thanks for watching!🙂

Hi Manuel.👋 Thanks for your question! Yes, I do use reverb in my videos, but it really depends on the track and the vibe I want to create. In fact, I made a video about Valhalla reverb where I explain how I use it in my music. But sometimes, especially when exploring the textures and nuances of the Moog Mother-32 and sound designing, I prefer to keep it dry and raw. I have never learned so little from a video on youtube than I have from this. Your sounds are beautiful, but you took 7 minutes to tell people to read the manual?
i really like this ambience Sound . but for this cool Sounds you have used any other effect pedal or another Synth . or not ? i really want to see another side which connected with colourful cables . i have bought the Mother 32 since 1 year , but i really want to know should i buy another Moog Subharmonie , with it receive i the ambience Sound ? or should i buy the cumulus for it ? or i have also at home the Event H9 , maybe it will also work ?? and i connect my Mother 32 with Logic Pro , i receive the Sound from Interface but i cant record any Sounds .......
Hi 👋Thanks for your comment and questions! In this video, I only used the Moog Mother-32 to create the ambient sound. However, I used some reverb in my DAW. It's worth exploring different options to find what works best for your desired sound. But using your Eventide H9 with your Mother-32 is a great option. Regarding recording issues, make sure your audio interface is set up correctly in Logic Pro, and don't hesitate to check out online resources for troubleshooting tips. Also check if your track is set to record 'R'(button) and on 'I' (input monitoring) if you want to hear the source. Hope this helps. 🙂 Keep experimenting and enjoy the journey with your Moog Mother-32! 🎹
@@KadForward thank you soooo much and I must say : I got now the magic ambience sound like you with H9 and I can now also record it , the reason is I have chosen the external midi track , but if I choose audio track , I got it ! !
Glad it worked! A little bit of reverb can do a lot. If you want to use reverb in logic you can also try to download the free Valhalla vst Supermassive. It sounds and has very interesting presets. Thanks again for your kind words. Have fun with it.👋🎹

@@KadForwardlove the sound of the Valhalla reverb but i dont use a computer in my little setup. Would you happen to have some recommendation on a physical reverb? I currently use the built in reverb on circuit tracks but it isnt really the best..

Hi there! Thanks for asking. I have an Alesis Quadraverb in my setup when I'm not using my DAW. You can still find them for a good price. Personally I like the reverb on this machine. But I still have to explore more modern options that I really like 😁. You can hear the reverb of the Quadraverb on my first improv: Kadimprov #1, Field of the host. I'm using it as a Send effect on the mixtable, for the intro on the Casio SK1 and on the Mother-32.🙂 Let me know what other reverbs are worth considering. I would be interested to explore this further. Thanks again for dropping by.👋

I've externally sequenced my mother for such a long time, because I was to lazy to learn the internal sequencer.. Finally I did and it's genius! If the mother is clocked on other gear, the internal bpm divides in various steps but stays in time with the other gear. Also the swing on it is pretty groovy, especially with some accents on different steps.
Also you can go from melodic to percussive stuff with just 1 knob! I think that's pretty awesome!
But what amazes me the most is just the sound: it's so silky smooth and versatile... Deep basses, smooth leads and plucks, groovy hats. I think it's the prettiest sounding mono-synth with just one osc.
Ah the sequencer, I know the feeling.😅 But once you get started it's so much fun. Indeed, the Moog Mother-32 is something special! 😊 Its versatility is remarkable. Keep having fun with it. Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment.

I play first... see what i come up with and make a track
I then read the manual, play with it see what i come up with and make a track. Them i watch some vids. Play with it and make dome tracks. Then inpstch across to my modular.... you never get a chance to just play if you read the manual first...
You’re absolutely right. It's important to look after what works best for you. In my case, I played a lot before reading the manual, and I felt I reached a ceiling. @KadForward the manuals generally make a lot more sense after I've had a good play around. That said. I've been messing with synths for 40 years..
