My mechanic friend timed my Model A engine just by listening to how fast it was idling after first pointing the rotar to number one spark plug contact with the number one piston at TDC. Then he undid the cam screw and advanced the rotar a couple of times until the engine was idling nice and slow. The cam screw had to be retightened, of course, for each test. But he did it all by ear.
my grandad drove a model A until 65, my farther and my Irish uncle Chris was forever working on it and it ran fine, I do believe this uncle taught me how to swear, but as he was a big strong man he was handy with the crank handle, when I was twelve in 63 there was a straight road between Woy Woy & Gosford he floored it and it nearly hit 60 was a big effort for the old fella to keep it on the road, my mother learnt to drive with this old car on a old air strip. when the old fella had his licence taken the car ended up with an other uncle who took it to Sydney it eventually got washed away in a flood, I learnt to drive with a 27 Chevy then a 49 Ford where was a hole in the floor for the two gear levers came though, the first car I ever drove on the road was a pommy( English) piece of junk Austin A 40 , now honestly this was not much better than the model A, I as a car nut could go on forever but I don't want to be boring..
good night , i have a ford , year 29 i live in Campinas SP Brazil i have a problem , water passed into the engine through the inlet valve of the fourth cylinder , the gasket is not burnt , i can not know how this water passed i have already removed the valve and i didn't see any cracks, can you give me any tips
I tried to use a timing light but when I hook up the spark clamp the engine runs rough and i get a shock, plus the light does not work. I am using an external 12v battery. any suggestions?
so are you saying that the timing on a model a ford engine is suppossed to be right at top dead center? because that's what you just did. that would be very unusual but admitadly I don't know much about them
kinda elaborate. These cars could and were timed long before strobe lights!! There is a nut on the cam cover. it is also a detector for a depression on the cam gear. Turn the engine til the pin sets, That is TDC on no. 1. Now, the distributor body is fixed by a grub screw. But, ther is a screw in the center of the distributor cam. Loosen and turn l the rotor points square at number one. Tighten, replace the cap and it is done. llever on the steering post allows the point plate to be advanced.,
Totally unnecessary. Do not need to time the engine with a timing flight. My father before me and now I time my 29 just using the reversed pin and the rotor pointed to number one cylinder. My A still has the original engine and has run very well since new. Kinda unusual they did not start the engine to see if why they did ran.
You are correct. I used to put a small lamp accross the points. Lamp on, points open. Lamp off, points closed. I advanced the cam until the lamp just went out then locked it. If the lamp wouldn't light it meant you had a shorted condensor.
I love seeing the old timers sharing their old info with us newer guys!!!!
Thanks!!!!!!!!
Its great to see this kind of stuff being done, too many people have forgotten about this what with modern electronic ignition systems.
just got my grand dads who is turning 90 model A ford (30) . This video will be very helpful thank you! =)
These Model A videos are fantastic, keep 'em coming.

I suggest you check out Les Andrews video on timing the Model A Ford...Les is probably the most knowledged individual on the Model A on the planet.
These gentleman put out a very good video...ENJOY your good work...
Fascinating! Old technology was so damn good.

This oil filter kit comes with a tube that you install to force the oil through the filter. It works awesome says my father.
We find using the timing light is more accurate that is why we do it that way.
@RottingBoard My father and i thank you.We are in the process right now trying to figure out what model A ford owners would like to see how to videos.
I'm guessing there's no timing mark from the factory, because the timing light hadn't been invented yet? haha... Great vids!. Keep 'em coming!
There is only a modern cap on the distributor to prevent water from dripping down from the hood and shorting out the engine.
That's cool to work with your father !
At TDC the rotor is facing at 5 oclock when your standing on the right side of the engine.
excellent video!
Would you know what the pressure is for the engine cylinder cover fit ford to 1931?
thanks for the lesson

hey man is this the camera samsung tl105 ? i just got this camera and saw your comment in amazon
does the oil filter really even do much with the splash oiling system and all?

Thanks for the video. Do you have a video explaining the vacuum oilier setup?
I do not at this time.
@OscarOsR Yes it is how do you like like it.
Excellent vid. Should have started it up so we know it was set right. ;)
awesome info

@mikeybrd 50 miles west of Boston down the mass turnpike
cool vid thanks
Some have put in the chevy 4 cylinder.

Are you guys in Baston, I mean Boston?
Is that an aftermarket distributor??
+terry s I believe the cap is.
1 and 3/8?
huh interesting, it sure needs it.
Sounds like a Southy accent to me🤘🏻
Ignition adjustment will be on retarded, all the time when you adjust?
some blankets over the fenders would be nice.
