Just ordered the tool. And I installed the new points and bottom plate upgrade from you yesterday. Cant wait to get my 31 fired up for the first time in a few years!
I've been there & done that with these old cars & although & bought all the gear for the old points /coil ignition system, the only thing I used was the timing gauge on the front cover. I ditched everything & put an FSI electronic distributor on my Model A & never looked back. It looks the same, gets rid of all this rubbish, including the advance & retard lever & makes my 1931 Briggs absolutely hum. Get into the 21st. century with some modern improvements to an 88 year old car.
What's the reason for lining up the cam tool with the rear spark plug contact on the distributor body? As long as the points are open on a raised lobe of the cam with the timing set properly, what difference does it make which lobe you use?
Why don't you upgrade your demo with the information provided in the paragraph at the bottom of your instruction sheet. Provides 28 degree max advance. (saving on rod bearings and saving on Bendix problems). So easy.
I set my timing on my Model A and it started and ran great! But after bout 4 to 5 tarts and drives the car gets out of timing. I tighten the cam screw as tight as I can, is there a reason it's getting out f time?
I have had a distributor where tightening the screw was not sufficiently clamping down on the dist. cam. Check to see if you have some condition that is keeping the screw from clamping the cam to the shaft. Maybe shorten the screw a bit??
good night, my name is Ricardo, I have a ford A year 29 I live in Campinas S.P Brazil I'm in doubt, can you help me? I need to check the point of the car's engine, remove the screw from the command cover and place the end of the screw in the hole in the command gear, which is the top dead center (I only know so far, and the rest) you can help me ? I watched your video but as I don't speak English, I didn't understand, you can explain here, then I use google translator, thank you very much
Did you ever get help? I'm going to learn this for the first time. I just got a '29 coupe', I'll check back, if you still want help I'll try to help you.
If the linkage controls ONLY the plate with the points(or pickup,in this case),and the real adjustment is only affecting the lobe(or reluctor,in this case),wasnt making sure the retarding of the points plate a mute point?SINCE ITS NOT AFFECTING THE RELATION OF LOBES-TO-SHAFT,no matter where the plate is with engine off?I could see it making a difference if you were checking for spark at coil wire with key on.
The way I understand this is,,,,,, this is setting the base or a known starting point to work with. It's like a foundation, without a known starting point you're guessing the entire time. Something that wasn't mentioned was making sure the spark control rod or the timing lever is making its full motion. When retarded the lever should just touch the side of the distributor body and when advanced should do the same on the other side. If not, you're not getting the full range you need. On the 1930-31 models you can set this by loosening the bolts at the steering box and turning the steering column. You cannot do this on the 1928-29 models.
I've used this tool works very well, but not perfect like using a timing light. Actual base timing for Model A engine is 5 degrees retarded. It's hard to get all the slack out of the cam/disturbor drive system.

Thanks for sharing. Very good video. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Thanks for the explanation and for this amazing tool. It's a most have tool in a Model A.
Outstanding and simple....the best unit ever used!!
Great Video! Looks like a very, very handy tool for A drivers of which i happen to be one of (daily driver). Just bought one from Mac's. Thanks!
Very good video, this adjustment decreases and increases the contact between rotor and shaft improves contact, this tool where you can buy.
Muchas gracias por subir este video traducido. Es una gran ayuda. Un saludo
Thank you very much for uploading this translated video. It is a great help. All the best
Thank you, I needed that.
I am having trouble feeling the pin drop in? any suggestions of what else I could look for to inital line up cylinders?

Enjoyed this video. I have always timed my model a with the lever all the way up. Does it make a difference if you have a5.5 or 6.0 head?
No.

That times it so that #1 cylinder fires at tdc

Dónde se consigue esa erramienta?
Is this IGNITION ELECTRONIC ? in Ford Model A 1929 ? and a alternator 6V ?
Si es un modelo A, parece que lo cambiaron a 12v. Tambien lo hicieron de transistor en vez de points. Todavia tiene la bobina nomas que no se vio

The same exact thing happens with my 1930 Model A as well. Very frustrating. Maybe this tool will at least help make the re-set easier and quicker.
Make sure the gaps are all set with a feeler gauge.

Would this work on the 32 model b or is it a different set up?
so is it ok to back up? or should you go around again
When you get it all the way in you have to pull it out and shove it in again and again.... Harder and harder....
it looks like you put an alternator on that puppy
Is there a video on the alternator fitting?

my car starts but will not run with out the choke then die
