When I was in England in 2005 I bought a tin of Orlik Strong Dark Kentucky. It was the best tobacco I had ever smoked. Not same today. Not so with Heinrich either. Nothing is static. Always changing. Oh hell...er...well change drives the world, doesn't it? I'm not complaining. I still like the tobacco. Its still good...just different.
Man, just smoked some Dark Strong Kentucky (the new stuff) for the first time, last weekend. Certainly had a nice smokey twist to it. Your descriptive reviews are always a pleasure, John - you make me want to fire up a bowl in my government cubicle, every time, saying "stick it" to the The Man and his indoor smoking ban! Hope all is well - smoke on! Eric
John, I have a tin and haven’t opened it yet. It probably has 2 years on it. Sounds mighty Tasty. Thanks for sharing . Be well and talk to you soon. Blessings from Gettysburg Pa. keep em burning
I kinda feel like I'm missing out ..... But I sure do love all of your videos and can honestly say you have in a way helped me stop smoking cigarettes and now I'm strictly a pipe smoker .
Hey Bubba, long time no see. I heard you talking about a fermented smell and I have gotten that a few times from older Virginia flakes. Not that old but a few years. Sometimes I get a musty red wine type taste but that may be from perique or Latakia aging.
Now here I was thinking it was Friday, when it's only Thursday!! You got me all screwed up!!! Sounds like some really nice stuff you got there. Great review, Brother!!
Orlik Dark Strong Kentucky is in my all time too 3 favorite blends! I love the strong flavors of the tobacco and the long bowl time. It is a challenge to get going, but most certainly worth it! I bet 12 years of age would be fantastic and a completely different dynamic to the smoke, especially if the blend itself changed 😀. Great review, thanks! Looking forward to the new ideas you have fir the channel. Take care. -Travis
Hi Doug, the Mrs. had a poor blood report recently but somehow seems better to me. She also has felt some improvement despite the blood counts, so we'll see where this takes us now.
The current Dark Strong Kentucky is pretty mild too. Very sweet, like candy at first if I remember right. Not what you expect but it's good. I'm gonna have to try it again it's been a few years
Thanks for sharing. Not surprised about the casing being hard to detect after 12 years. With a fresh tin, the molasses comes through in almost each and every puff but just like you, I have never been able to detect the licorice.
I’ve been smoking the new tins I can’t imagine what an older tin tastes like. The new tins have dark on the out side and blonde on the inside.🍭🐓👶 Thanks for sharing.
Hi John,I didn't detect much of Kentucky fired tobaccies in here,it was rather a mild to medium strength blend to me, Thanks for the review and have a nice, warm weekend, Paul
Hi Matches, Sounds like a really good blend, Love the looks of the flake can’t wait till I can start putting the taste to the names, all still kind a new to me, great video,
You mentioned molasses as a casing. Twelve years in an anaerobic tin, with natural yeasts present on the leaves and some nice molasses as food. Yep, I can easily imagine some slow fermentation going on until you cracked the tin. A tiny amount of alcohol would be seen, as a by-product, proportional to the total water content in the sealed tin. Analagous to fermented and aged tobacco in premium cigars. That'd be a tasty smoking experience for fans of the fresh mixture.
Yes, I think what I have here is a science project at its best. I forgot to mention the component leaves, burley and Virginia mainly because I detect no Virginia leaf whatsoever. My guess is that any sugar in those leaves was consumed by microbes as well and the leaf just melded into the burley. All pretty interesting stuff going on.
This blend is one of my favorites. I just love how this blend smells. I don't classify it as an aromatic at all. But is just really good in the middle blend. I also think it looks a lot like bacon! My other favorite thing! Thanks for your review.
I have only had peter Heinrich’s dark strong flake. Which is good but definitely aromatic. Great presentation with that dark and light colored flake. I have had nothing like it to compare. Be well John!
Got some Italian dark fired in that new small batch from C&D I know your a burley fan John , but this is a good mix. Sansepolcro I think its called. Made me think of you and Sarge. Think I read the dark fired is used as cigar rap on his guinea stinkers.
Great Vid yet again Matches! I just made a trip out to a Tinder Box. Guess what I got? Mac Baren "Plumcake". YeaYuh! Haven't had this in a Year or two, gonna enjoy this.
Just for me I prefer the Mac Baren old dark fired. I get 2 hours a flake outta it and it stays lit well. Something about the Orlik rubs out weird. It for me rubs out in balls. Ive never had a flake do that. I liked the flavor of it but the Mac Baren is still my daily burley. Good review John.
I have never smoked this Orlik Dark Kentucky Flake, however the description you give it in your oratory, if I did not know you were describing this tobacco , I would have been convinced your were describing Germain's Rich Dark Flake c/w more than a hint of molasses , the only deviant was the alcohol content, something my palette has not detected in the RDF, the Orlik flake does seem a shade darker to that of Germain's. Do you have an opinion on this, I would be most interested to know. Best Regards,
I'm a huge Mac Baren Old Dark Fired fan. Much like Pavlov's pooch, the power of suggestion will have me ordering a tin. Golden Sliced is a permanent part of my rotation. Maybe this Orlik blend will be too. Thanks, John.
I smoked a fresh tin of this back in the late 90's, but of course I can't remember what it was like. ODF and Golden Sliced are terrific, I've smoked many tins of those.
Yep! And the neighbor on the other side has a landscaper who always arrives at 3:15pm when I get home from work and want a catnap. The neighbor behind me who usually disrupted my Friday videos has moved LOL.
MATCHESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS 860 ‼️ ‼️ 👏🏻 😃 hello John..well I have a tin that is 3 years old and I do like old dark fired better....talk to you tomorrow morning my friend take care 👍
I have a tin of this aging in the cellar now. I've only had it for about 2 months tho. I really want to crack it open, but I also want to let it age for a while too. Lol....

This is my daily smoke, in fact smoking it right now.
Smoking it now! Miss you, buddy!
