  • What is the best type of washing machine hoses? Braided stainless steel vs rubber washing machine hoses? An insurance company's study of washing machine hoses says that the average age of a failed hose is 8.7 years. The study recommends replacing both stainless steel braided hoses and rubber hoses every 5 to 7 years.
The most common place for a washing machine hose to leak or burst is at the connection. Poor quality or badly designed hoses are also a factor. Proper installation can extend the life of a washing machine hose. Leave at least 4 inches of room between the washing machine and the wall behind the machine. Insure that the washing machine does not rock back and forth.
The washing machine hose shown in this video lasted over 15 years. Proper installation and maintenance can prevent a burst hose or hose failure.

It's me again. Would anything like a tire product help extend life of hoses?

Hi Ed, I've never tried a tire product on the hoses. If they are rubber, it couldn't hurt.
After I read the insurance company study, it looks like most hose failures are at the connection (both steel & rubber). My thought is that when the washer at the connection fails, it eventually causes the connector that is crimped onto the hose to fail & causes the hose to burst at the connector (I can't find the study, wish I could give you a link).
If you change the washer on the hose ends every 3-5 years, make sure the hoses have enough room to bend & level the washer the hoses will last a long time (one of my hoses is over 18 years old). I visually check my hoses every 3 months & focus on the connectors. Both the hose manufacturers & the insurance companies have a strong interest to tell you to change the hoses as often as possible. I think you can save a lot of money by simply changing that rubber washer.

I think if the washer doesn't rock, you visibly check the hoses about 2 times a year and change the rubber washers on the hose ends, the hoses will last a long time.
