Why a Dryer is Leaving Black Marks on Clothes

  • Brown or Black marks on clothing after removing it from a clothes dryer, indicates that the felt seal or seals on your dryer drum is bad. Clothing getting caught in the dry drum is another indication that the felt seal is worn out. Sometimes the color brown and burnt looking.
If the dryer does not have a main bearing, then the weight of the dryer drum rests on felt seals and a drum glide The felt seals keep the warm air in the dryer and they keep the metal edge of the dryer from scraping against the lip on the bulkhead of the dryer.

Thanks for watching Tim. I believe I've done the first service on this dryer since it was purchased in 1991 for $329.99. It came with the house, I've been here since 2001. I'm almost done cleaning and refurbishing it. I've spent about $60 for the parts. If you can fix the old appliances yourself it is definitely worth it.
Probably the best thing you can do, is clean the motor occasionally. This one had a layer of black fuzz on it. A layer of dirt/fuzz will make the motor run hot. I spent 20 years working with electronics. Running electronics/electrical equipment hot makes them fail prematurely.
I'm planning to do a video to overview the repairs that were done. Then I'll create a playlist with all the videos that show how to do the repairs for anyone who thinks they want to tackle the job. I've done all the research, so it should be pretty easy for the next person.
I think the washer to this set has bad cogs.... that's next.

And..as you said in the other video, they don't make them like these anymore!
Mine are 1983 Ropers! That's 34 yr old, but they work great!!
I've only replaced the heating element & heat temp protector on the dryer, and the cogs on the washer. Of course the hoses every now and then. BUT...they are definitely worth the inexpensive repairs! Probably less that $50 total! MOST parts are very inexpensive!
Another very well done video!! Thank you. : ))

Sweet! We’ve been seeing dark (brownish/black) marks on out clothes recently. I have a kenmore from 1993 and it appears to have the worn felt seal just as you are showing here. I’ve been so reluctant to purchase a new appliance that will last a fraction of the time this good ol’ kenmore has. Now I have a solution to keep her going another twenty five years!

We are on the same plan, Terry. It's a shame that appliances are now throw away and you are lucky if they last 10 years. I'm fixing mine as long as I can buy parts. Once you have the part numbers, I've found the best prices for them on eBay. Don't forget to take the back apart and clean the lint chute if you haven't already done that. You will be astonished at how much lint you will remove. I have a playlist with videos for this dryer. ua-cam.com/play/PLvce66kQTjJSwXTgv6GwacfeFe2ajKdOw.html

Sure thing! I have a question about opening up a Kenmore dryer. The philips screws on our home dryer have rusted and corroded to the point I can't take them out with a screwdriver. I tried a method where I try to unscrew them through a rubber band to no avail. Do you have any advice for removing a rusty corroded screw?

If you aren't able to turn them, you could try spraying penetrating oil (PB Blaster, Liquid Wrench) on it, wait an hour & try again. You can put a screw driver on it & give a few taps. As a last resort, drill the screw out, or cut it away with a dremel tool or a saw. If you drill it out, it's likely you'll need a larger replacement screw.

I thought a bad dryer seal was my problem but I took apart my dryer and both felt seals, front and back, look okay. I'm feeling a little in over my head on all this, I have no idea what I'm doing! But my dryer won't really heat up and recently has started randomly destroying clothing by leaving hundreds of black marks on things. I was hoping I could fix it because I don't really have money to replace it but I'm a loss as to what's wrong, now. The drum seems to be rotating fine and it's not making squealing nosies. Before the black marks I just assumed I needed to clean the hose or replace a heating element.

I need to change mine. Black scuffs on anything white that I dry :/ I know mine is bad, the felt is hanging off into the drum.

I have a video that shows how to do that, here's the link: ua-cam.com/video/Ttei3TBwxRw/v-deo.html

In most cases, black marks are caused by chewing gum that is stuck on the drum, baffles, inside front and inside back of the dryer. They can be scraped off, and cleaned.
