For whoever thinks its pointless for being so expensive...the bike wasn't meant for you, you don't get the point. This is a hand built prototype with top of the line components (similar to the BMW HP4 race), only the forks cost something like 20k I personally like the fact that 2 stroke isn't dead and i love the concept..they tried to give 2 strokes the final touch of class showing the world what it is capable of. AWESOME
Hypersonik yes they did, for emission reasons it is not possibile to homologate big 2 strokes anymore, modern GP bikes have followed the trend (125->moto3, 250->moto2 etc), 4 strokes have been developed enough with modern technology to trump old 2 strokes and there's no point to investe in the technology anymore..
To the people that say just buy a standard bike and do it up, it would never be the same. This package is unmatchable the chance to ride this beast 576cc 2 stroke is uncomprehendable ... so light so quick try catch this in corners good luck.... if money is no issue why not... the ones with no money do the complaining but if they had the $$$$ their tone would change and make hypocrites of themselves..... 100%
If modern manufactures brought out a new version of the two strokes I grew up with except new 500cc bikes like the RGV NSR KR1s for the road they would sell like hotcakes. All parts top are available now from each manufacturer. Make a fuel injected two stroke put it together and sell it. What a riot!
It's hard for fuel injected four strokes to meet new emission regulations, a two stroke would be impossible, plus all the burning oil would ruin the catalytic convertors the four strokes use to comply with the regs.
Somebody said this is expensive. This bike is about 127kg (280lb) and 195bhp. £87k ($116k) 195bhp from a 576cc is a bit extreme, lets say they produce 165bhp reliably all day. To further reduce cost they mass produce the bike and remove top of the line parts with common ones, which add 26kg (57lb) to the bike. So in the end we have a reliable 153kg (337lb) 165bhp from a 576cc bike for about £28k ($32k) or possibly less. Now lets say they produced a similar (and mass produced to drive down cost) 1000cc two stroke. Just conservative estimates produce 175kg (385lb) 245bhp motorcycle for £35k ($40k) or less. "Exotic" ducatis command those prices these days. Where is your 4 stroke now? Suter is still very exotic and worth its price. Most of the sticker price is just because its produced in small numbers and built by humans not robots anyway.
I bet building a custom carter to house 4 cylinders from high end moped engines, adapting the engine to a chassis, could be from a 600 then making the 4 custom exhausts will cost much less than buying this bike I've seen V2 204cc moped engines and they all pull between 67 to 72hp, so imagine a 4 cyl
Now this is a machine work of art certainly not pointless i bet the smell is mmm lush and a rush to boot i would love a go on this magnificent machine well done to suter she is beautiful
the same exact day I win the lottery this will be in my garage I would buy a whole nother bike to ride to go get this and hire someone to ride the Ducati v4 back for me
It's like having a Turbo charged bike but with less moving parts to work about. I don't own a 2 stroke but if I had a dedicated race bike I'd probably want a 2 stroke.
Hi everyone, I am looking for a diagram or an explanation of the 2 stroke engine that was used in motor bikes for racing. The engine has 1 or 2 exhaust valves that shut off to hold more in the compression stroke. This is different to the power valve. Thank you
I don't know why more bikes don't use a 2 stroke, to be honest. The major faults of the 2 stroke were its efficiency and its power curve. With modern fuel injectors the problem of intake air going out the exhaust isn't an issue - it no longer carries fuel as we aren't reliant on carbs. Indeed prototype 2 strokes are actually more efficient than prototype 4 strokes now as they aren't wasting so much energy on "useless" cycles. And with the many modern tools (electronic ignition timing, variable valve timing, throttle by wire, etc) the power curve can be fixed as Suter themselves seem to be demonstrating. For cars it offers a more efficient engine for maybe 20 years into the future, for motorbikes the mix of good efficiency and an amazing power for its size and weight really makes it the ideal engine for any sporting bike. Putting that into a near-GP chassis just makes an absolute dream bike. Complaints of its price really miss the point - its fully race ready bike for less than the price of a mediocre performing supercar. Frankly they could easily have been charging 2-3 times the cost.
These guys at suter need to develop an engine for a track car like a caterham, radical, KTM, BAC, ariel or lotus! I think a lower specific output might be necessary because with 4 wheels and increased weight you're gonna want more torque but I would imagine that a 1000-1500cc with 250-300hp could be amazing!
I may not be much of a fan, but 2 strokes sure are something. 500cc, nearing 200hp... powerband that could bend you over and give you a good spanking, but to me, it sounds like a kids toy. A deadly, deadly kids toy.
