I haven't had regular coffee in over 10 years. I remember when I quit, I had withdrawal symptoms the first few days and around the 3rd day I got a nose bleed. After 5-7 days I felt better than ever before. I no longer got random headaches throughout the day, no longer woke up feeling dizzy, and my energy was evenly balanced throughout the day.. no significant highs or lows. My skin also started looking better and teeth got whiter. My joints felt more lubricated. Now I wake up already feeling energetic and don't need a jolt from coffee. I only drink one cup of coffee a day and sometimes I intermittent fast so I workout in a fast state I wait about a half an hour half a cup of coffee and then I'll have a lunch or when I fast once a week I'll have my first meal at 3 p.m..
He's right and I learned this firsthand. My job is very demanding on my body and I'm 45 years old. For years I woke up and drank coffee first thing. As I have gotten older I have realized how important hydration is. I started drinking a glass of water with an eighth of a teaspoon of Redmond salt in it every morning. I wait about an hour before I drink coffee. Total game changer. If you don't believe me, try it yourself. Do it for a week and tell me if you don't notice a difference. You will lose a lot of the slothfulness after lunch and you will not want to take a nap in the middle of the day.

*Every single negative side effect* you listed I experienced exactly. I had developed a tolerance and was getting lethargic, jittery, experiencing hypertension, dizziness, inconsistent body temperature levels, lack of focus and drive, depression, just overall feeling very sick and gross and nearly passing out on several occasions. It felt like my body chemistry was very imbalanced and these symptoms would very often manifest at random times of day, and all I could do was put my head down and bear through it and wait for it to subside. It was so bad I was worried I had developed a serious irreversible medical condition. Over time I scaled my coffee consumption back gradually and now I drink about an hour after I wake but not before I drink at least a full glass of water, staying hydrated through the day. At least 7-8 hours of sleep are vital. Any deviation from those habits and my symptoms rear their head again as if to say, _"Say hello to your little friend!"_ The video was a good reminder of keeping it under control. Thanks Doc!

Way to miss the entire point of the video, he said drinking coffee is fine just avoid doing it right when you wake up due to the negative effects with cortisol.
@clipsburg412 and when do you think 99% of people drink their coffee? First thing my grandma does is make a coffee. In fact, go to Italy, that's the first thing they do even before eating. Pretty sure I didn't miss the point.
@@funcool32 Just because it's a cultural thing to drink coffee right after waking up in some places, does not make it healthy. I have 1 cup a day 30 minutes to an hour after waking up. Usually an hour after. I don't think that's long enough to wait for. It also tastes much better after waiting for it. Yes, perhaps even with a quality electrolyte powder added, sometimes. If not every morning. It depends on the extent to which my previous day's meals contained sodium. If so for example, I may have just water the following morning.
It’s the aroma that coffee used to have that was so inviting. What happened to that aroma? The taste is there but not that aroma. It used to fill the house and it was the wake up signal for everyone.
I think the quality/taste of some brands varies. For example, 'gold' Lavazza and Vittoria Mountain Grown were nicer a few years ago. The last pack of Lavazza I had was ordinary. In fact, I stopped buying it. So, perhaps the aroma varies with taste
@@JordyJayHomer I too have experienced that. I don't know if they are adding fillers to the ground stuff or if some of it is stale from sitting on the shelf too long before I buy it. If I buy whole beans and have it ground at Starbucks when I purchase it, it tastes and smells better and seems fresher.
Dehydration is one thing, Cortisol effect is another. so... while the amount of water in the average cup of coffee probably, cancels out the effect of the dehydration caused by the caffeine the Cortisol effect can be a roller coaster of responses to events. If it hits right I am happy :) if it hits me wrong I can become a warrior. So I really appreciate my new Cortisol knowledge gained from this video and the advice to delay my morning coffee for less of a Cortisol effect. Thank You!!
But - the water in your coffee just goes right through because of its diuretic effect so the dehydration is not resolved until consuming even more water.
for every one cup of coffee, you have to drink 3 cups of water just to equalize. 2 cups of coffee = 6 cups of water. Most people don't drink that in an entire day. Coffee dehydration is a real problem
@@guyinpajamapants6892 it is true. CF drinkers are usually chronically dehydrated which taxes the kidneys and liver and will cause dark circles under the eyes. Make sure you compensate cf with enough water with a little honey and sea salt.

I am addicted to Coffee First in the morning. This video answers the questions I have about all my every morning tiredness and cardiac issues likely related. Dry Joints aching. I need another cup of Joe...
Not quite. The biggest reason cortisol spikes is because liver glycogen gas been depleted overnight. Having coffee raises the metabolism and there must be fuel to supply it. Having coffee without dietary sugar and cream will cause cortisol to ramp up in order to make glucose for the fuel deficit.
Distilled water is very bad to drink as it has absolutely no minerals or electrolytes! Please, if you’re going to drink distilled water, add electrolytes to it. Otherwise, you are depleting them from your bones, ect. Not a good idea!
@robing7524 The purpose of water is not for minerals, that is the purpose of food. If one is eating and hydrating properly, distilled water is the best thing for you. (It is even sold in the baby isle) 😶
@@tbear68- that is most certainly not what I have seen, heard and read from other doctors in the know! Distilled water being devoid of all minerals will leach the minerals from the bones.
Couldnt be. Your body naturally filters out the coffee ,thats why you pee a lot after drinking it. Your gonna need hydration and water will help your kidneys and liver to process everything.
Funnily enough, it's the other way around - we abuse caffeine from various sources to create the dystopia. Take away caffeine sources and within a decade the rat race slows down.
More great advice, thanks Dr Mandell. For a number of years I have been keeping a glass of distilled water with a pinch of Himalayan salt by bedside ,sipping if I awaken, especially if I get slight headache, finishing off when I get up. This perhaps explains why I'm really depressed after drinking coffee in the morning. I get so down that I feel disparing. I will from now on not drink coffee right away, get rehydrated first and wait for later in the day. Thank you for the video.
Good advice. You confirm much of what I’ve been hearing about coffee, and added some new things, like the function of the adrenal glands, and the fact that coffee is a diuretic and the first thing you drink should be water. If you had one cup of coffee per day, the most optimal time to have it is probably around 2:00 in the afternoon-you’ve had lunch, and you kind of slow down because now your natural hormones are at a low level. Your system could actually use a boost at that time. Anyhow, thanks!
Great advice! I steep a cup of mint tea overnight and drank that in the morning after I've drank water and taken my aminos on an empty stomach. I brew my 2 kcups for work and take it with me so I'm drinking it around 8a, but I've been up since 4:30a. Sometimes I have green tea first thing along with the mint tea, but have cut way back on that and have the green tea in the evenings. It's all about timing as doc has explained.

Water would be the best. When you wake up, you've lost a liter of water and are dehydrated. Water is the best, healthiest re-hydrator. What I kept waiting for him to say how long we should wait before we have the first cup of coffee. I drink water while I wait for my coffee because I am so thirsty when I wake up. It's caffiene that affects the cortisol levels and is a diuretic. Although decaf still has a trace amount of caffeine, it shouldn't have the same effect. Not being a slave to coffee is probably the best thing I've done for myself aside from never smoking. Occasionally, on a cold or rainy morning, I'll make some decaf coffee. I don't consume anything with caffeine including dark chocolate and certain teas.

Not quite. The biggest reason cortisol spikes is because liver glycogen gas been depleted overnight. Having coffee raises the metabolism and there must be fuel to supply it. Having coffee without dietary sugar and cream will cause cortisol to ramp up in order to make glucose for the fuel deficit.

I drink my Kangen water 💦 1st thing in the morning also . I don’t drink coffee often if I do I wait around 11am to drink 1 cup of organic coffee ☕️ of course made with the best water in the world 🌎 . 😀
I always put a teaspoon of sea salt & potassium in my coffee every morning!! And feel great!!😊
Dr. Mandell, my eyes are bad, so I would appreciate you not using white background. Thanks for all your great teaching!
Oh yay! Thanks for the message! I’ve been instinctively doing things right 😊 I Always promise myself to drink a bottle of water before coffee and I take about an hour or so before I finally get the chance to make coffee anyway lol
I've been drinking coffee for 40 years , I ain't got no addiction.....
Depends on the person. Kind of like how some people get addicted to alcohol while others can stop on the dime
Lol! Me too
😂😂
I love my coffee, it’s like a liquid hug for my brain, but I stopped for each of my four pregnancies and before I ever have any procedures. Piece of cake! Which is the next best thing to coffee.
Yeah.... sure
Want to lose weight then don't have high cortisol levels at all.
In fact when I've dropped coffee all together after 4 to 5 days my energy levels are incredibly great and my mood is very even. I'm such a nicer person to be around, and I just watch the weight drop away.
This is definitely a psychotropic drug.
I've switched to decaf coffee in the a.m....2 cups of organic Hazelnut, actually with CoffeeMate making it a café au lait. Love every sip made by my hubby ❤❤❤. Love your work Dr Mandell and when you end saying, 'Make it a great day'! 👍☕☕👍
Coffee mate is full of seed oil, and other ingredients that are inflammatory, If you need a creamer, look into LAIRD Or just get a nut creamer that doesn’t have more than a gram or two of sugar in it
I will try this. You are right. I have noticed a difference since I went from Decaf to half-caf and added cups to my day. I do start with water first, but can't wait to get that coffee! I have been waiting til the sun is up or at least glowing. Now we have the time change to contend with. The sun could essentially be up an hour before I should drink coffee. We best have no addictions, in view of the cost of living. Coffee prices just rose overnight.
Morning routine:
1. Wake up
2. Water
3. Meditation
4. More water
5. Pee
6. Cold shower
7. Quick blood floow and mobility excersise session
8. Teeth hygiene
9. Breakfast
10. Coffee
11. Poop
Maybe do #6 after #11. Just saying.

That would mess up the whole system xd
And believe me, it's well thought out and empirically tested in different variations.
@@zajtoja LOL Have a good day.
Coffee does not only act as a diuretic. It also acts as a natural laxative. I take mine in the morning, because I don’t wanna deal with sudden afternoon bathroom breaks while in the middle of work.
...this guy is good. I mean like REALLY good. Dammit! He's like...but BETTER...than a cup of coffee(as we'd LIKE coffee to be)...first thing in the morning. Find this fella, skip the coffee until...
Thanks Dr. Allen, I have been noticing that coffee effects me differently at an older age and wondering what to do about it.
Short and to the point.
Thanks, I am a coffee addict, and have been drinking my 2 cups of joe every morning for 30 yrs but I'm listening to you, and will try this as what you've said I can't deny....😅 thanks again. Have an absolutely fabulous day! 😊❤
I stopped drinking coffee months ago, and I tried warm water with lemon juice and apple cider vinegar for a week. It's been over three weeks that I have been drinking it and I look forward to it every morning. Thanks Dr. for that.
how much acv and lemon juice do you add to the water?
It certainly doesn’t feel like I wake up with peak cortisone levels, as I am groggy and unproductive. Coffee kickstarts my being productive - at my sharpest around 10:30am. I don’t necessarily need more coffee later in the morning or afternoon.
Exactly. I get up groggy. Two cups of black coffee and I'm good. It's the only coffee I drink all day. So, who do I believe? This guy or my lyin' eyes?
@@60-Is-The-New-30 Well, caffeine is certainly known as a diuretic and you may be right that I may be dehydrated and not be aware of it, this being dry Wyoming. But dehydration being the "root of most diseases"? You'd have to point me to published studies on that. I go by how I feel, and I feel pretty darn energized after 2 cups of coffee, a glass of OJ, and a hearty breakfast. Diabetes, arthritis, and other illnesses have been shown to be related to obesity, so if illness was my concern, I'd go there first. Fortunately, I'm slim. :)
Cortisol
@@wyominghome4857 you wake up groggy because of caffeine
I was like you and quit this spring.the best thing ever.
Now every morning I wake up at 7 and sometimes I go to bed at 1 am.un the morning I feel fresh energy .do not need anything I have to force myself to drink water or electrolytes.
I do not need coffee to start my day.
Caffeine stays in your system for 12 hours so you are in a circle all the time with fresh caffeine in the blood stream and old caffeine in the blood stream.this destroys your sleep completely you will never be able to go to deep sleep .you sleep but I is a shallow sleep and you even may move a lot while sleeping.
The majes you groggy in the morning.
Understand this why do you sleep
To get energy and get fresh I you wake up groggy I means you are doing something absolutely wrong.
Example.
My 8 years old son wakes up in the morning exploding with energy.does he needs coffee NO.how come he hwas amazing energy and I a groggy.
Quit coffee completely washed it out of my system for about 3 weeks and now I am absolutely fine.never felt better.
Caffeine destroyed your body completely.
Also some people are caffeine sensitive more sensitive than others you maybe one of them.
But for sure you do not have to wake up feeling groggy .
Coffee or not.
Caffeine messes up your cortisol levels and thavstress hormone can damage your organs because you are basically living una constant flight or fight mode.
This is a thing that I do not miss at all from coffee.
Omg I cannot believe I did it.i finally quit drinking tis garbage
If people could understand the benefits of quiting drinking this poison ofbthenerve system.
Good luck to you man.

Every single word is correct
I feel the cortisol kick in and I have to go take a walk, or I will feel like fighting. I still LOVE coffee.❤
Starting tomorrow I will really try to wait to drink my coffee. I am an early riser and the first thing I do when I wake up is make and drink my coffee. Thanks so much for all your great advice.
Very informative. I start my morning daily with a warm cup of water with the juice of five green limes to hydrate my body and have my usual breakfast half an hour later. I drink my cup of black coffee two hours later at 1000 hrs and feel very energetic. Never have your coffee first thing in the morning or your health will suffer. Cheers!
Java Junkies unite 🤯 gotta have it, I told myself I was gonna quite a thousand times but addicting. 🤓
I have not drank a cup of coffee for 8 years. Plus drinking one cup in the morning won’t do you harm in less your drinking a lot of it all day and not changing it to tea or water.
Coffee is a drug and in my 70th year I quit it!…I drank organic freshly ground dark roast for many years believing all the health hype benefits of it!…But now experience a far healthier smoother running fit body without it in Many ways!
I drink first 0,5 l water as I am listening to my body so before , this awesome insights from our beloved and inspirational Doc, and later I make a cappuccino and honestly to relax and not to get any energy from the coffee but purely to enjoy the aroma and just chill
Thank you, sir. I can see some of those negative results after drinking coffee first thing for 3 years.
