"1979 was the last year of HDT" isn't right. In 1969, Holden formed the HDT through an elaborate, arm’s length ownership structure to keep within GM’s global “no motorsport” rules. They appointed Harry Firth to run it, and upon his retirement, John Sheppard took over. 1979 was the last year that HDT had Holden backing, as Holden pulled the pin on funding as Ford had done the same. Beyond 1979, the team was sold off to Vin Kean (the South Australian Holden dealer), who rallied together a bunch of Holden dealers to help fund the race team with support from Marlboro and later Mobil, which also resulted in the HDT road cars, which were backed by Holden and sold through the dealers which helped finance the team. The 1980s were arguably HDTs best years, they won Bathurst 5 times (from 8-10 attempts), Sandown twice, the ATCC once (with multiple placings), won odd ball events (Pukekohe 500) and several rounds of the European Touring Car series. So perhaps 1979 was the last year HDT was owned by Holden but certainly not the last year of HDT.

Yes because he led from start to finish in an Holden Torana A9X, the best car he ever piloted and he won by 6 laps. Stunning. I still remember it. This is where he received the "King" title.
I think the way he won was great from a team perspective too. It wasn't just raw pace, it was the ability to maintain that pace for longer than everyone else. There were other teams who could go quick too but their cars couldn't take it. Lap record on the last lap showed the ultimate superiority of the driver AND the team.

It was a pig to drive at any speed under 50 mph, it would dance from side to side but still stay in a perfectly straight line. Get over 50 and it would stop dancing and get down to business. The faster ya went, the better it handled. I was the third owner, the previous owner said he bought it at a police auction. It only had 24000 kays on the clock and was straight as an arrow. Looked new even though it was 13 years old. That little 202 with its set of triple Strombergs would rev cleanly all the way to 7500 rpms and e as smooth as silk. I worked out with the 2,73 diff in her, she was doing a tad under 150 mph. That was down hill, she couldnt do that on the flat. Last year a bloke from the Eastern States got hold of me on messenger and was asking what the vin and body numbers were so i went n found them . Id taken them off for safety’s reasons. He told me to have a loook on the back of the vin plate and see kf there was any numbers scratched on it. It hadnt been cleaned since it was put on the car so i cleaned the gunk off the back of it and sure enough there were a couple of numbers scratched into the aluminium plate. He said congratulations, your the owner of a 73 Bathurst XU-1. 1 of 250 ever made. I always thought, and fead the only 150 were made. That is wrong. Its 250. Over 250 engines were made to the Bathurst species and a lot of them were unstamped. No engine numbers. That was for racing reasons, if they blew a motor during qualifying they could wack in another motor with the same numbers stamped on as the blown one. I have watched many Bathurst's and cannot remember any of them having one team just totally dominate the race. Two of the best drivers in the game, and a car built so well it had no flaws. It was awesome to watch.
The introduction of the pace car would pretty much prevent it being done again. That doesn't take away from this being the most dominant victory ever, in the many races before & the 8 after this, no other car was able to lead the entire race
@@peterhoare3219 yeah the original matched the trim in the car the one that replaced it is black and the original was removed when they raced the commodore in 1980, same as the original wheels aren’t on the car
I love this. thank you for uploading. Im gonna say '87 was arguably his best victory, winning by this much in '79 was very cool though. So was that car.
Yeah everyone is going to have a different opinion. I actually think 75 is right up there cause he'd been given the boot from HDT and they built that car on a tight budget and literally had to win to stay afloat. 79 is the one where he really showed his domination though.
He is not king broke like mark a wanker yer he can drive but held back Löwens a blocker of a driver both in nascar would been pitted who bitched to v8 super cars ford is to fast lucky that 6 was not put in. Holden made a crap engine brock bitch at the right time. And you don’t like. What I say well I new a few how ran the race track Holden where all ways bitching and lies. Then 90 % was on the track
This is the most dominant win in the history of Australian motorsport full stop. The orchestrated 1-2 that ford had in 1977 was a farce in comparison with Bond slowing down for moffat to cross the line first and accepting a 2nd place when he deserved the win.
Yes it was my first year at Bathurst and van see why sitting at mcfellamy park on the last lap you could see he was going for the lap record he was pushing so hard. That car only did 29 laps total around track at start of race not many know this it just sat in pits and not get touched and that was every lap Jim qualy Peter qualy 1st and linning up to start race. A damb good memory and making eye contact with him at summer nats signing atografes only 10 people in line did not stop regret that but good to make eye contact with great driver.
Cracker of a clip mate! We all had to sit round the TV & watch Baffest as a kid (& turn it down if grandad had a nag running!).. Where's all the time gone!?;
When folks talk about Max Verstappen's 2023 F1 season, they should also include the story of the man commonly known as Pee Bee. Brock. He's not just 'a' legend. He is THE legend all others to come after him aspire to be.
i did some digging...a Patterson sponsored Monaro came second out rite at Bathurst in 69...one of the first HDT cars...must have been not long after Peter Brock joined them !
Torana A9X awesome car. most of the sponsors were cigarette companies.. they sure poured a lot of money into this race, back then. Winfleld, Marlboro, Camel etc. liked those big ford XC coupes/cobras. classics.
Bit disrespectful to Jimmy Richards wasn't it? Jum was every bit as good as Brock and did his part completely in this race, and the narrator even said "one man" at one point in the video referring to Brock. And no, wasn't Brock's greatest Bathurst victory, 1975 would rate higher in a genuinely private team rather than HDT, and 1987 when he finished 3rd with a home grown car against the world's best.
Yeah I thought it was a bit rough on Jim too but back then it was the main driver and then the co-driver and most of the accolades went to the main guy. You have to remember too he was a relatively unknown young bloke from New Zealand at the time. I have heard Brocky say that he loved having Jim as a team mate cause he knew he would get the car back how he gave it to him and in as good or a better position so he could relax in between stints. Some people think 1972 was Brock's best win against all odds in the little Torana, but that's why I asked the question, cause its not a cut and dry answer.
No denying the bloke's talent, but this victory was largely due to Holden (hiding behind their dealer network) spending more money than anybody else on their Bathurst campaign. It helped to have the most talented driver in that car as well.
Yeah some people prefer it that way because the field spreads out and the leader isn't disadvantaged by having to bunch up etc but watching old footage there were some close calls with the back of trucks at high speed.
@@BorkenGarage Im sure from the begining with Colin Bond and Harry Firth in the late sixties...Both excellent Mechanics in their own right...Bill Pattersons had been involved in local racing for years ...even having race cars and open wheelers displayed in the show room...Foot note...I Talked Dad into buying a new EK Wagon from them when i was a little Kid...and getting rid of the shitbox Vauxhall !!!
Back when racing was racing......no water cooled race suits here. Don't even bother watching the super cars now days......the Brock, Moffat, Johnston, and other greats of the era drove the super cars.....win on Sunday....Sales on Monday.
Yeah it all seems kinda pointless and detached from reality now. Back in the day you could see the cars you watched racing on your way to school the next day, I don't think I've ever seen a late model Camaro and the Mustangs don't really look the same. Certainly don't perform the same!
the sport was amateur back then theyd win by minutes ahead of second place,,,,,in modern day supercars they win by seconds or micro seconds and they sure as hell dont get into another car when their one breaks like brock did,
When it was actually racing, Human and proper cars. No computer control or specialty built race cars like today. They have destroyed the character of real racing. The best 2 looking cars Australia has ever made: Torana and the 2 door Falcon.
Great days those. Great drivers, great cars, real competition. These days, the sanitized generic V8 soup cars, which bear no technical connection to road cars, are sooo boring. The rules made for close racing now, make the whole show so artificial. Haven’t watched Bathurst or any other race for many years.
Always been biased against ford, when were ford forced to use an entirely new front suspension & steering system & told they couldnt do any testing, mostparity changes have been done for fords benefit
It’s all there. He wasn’t six laps ahead til moffat broke. Brock had no competition he just drove away. Now 1980 was a great race, a true showing of the man’s skill. Brock came back from a crash and being a lap down to win.
@@ethanearl Yeah but in terms of pure dominance it could be argued its his greatest. I reckon nearly every win would have a reason it could be the greatest. Have had other guys say 72, some say 75 and some say 87. Its an interesting argument.
Pretty easy to dominate when there is no competition. Also what needs to be considered is that the Torana and falcon hardtops were in their last year, no one wanted to spend the money on them when they knew that they needed to build commodores and falcons for the next year. Same thing happened in 1984, another hollow victory.
@@ethanearl Its not like he crawled over the line though, or didn't have competitors. Bob Morris was sort of keeping up early on but his car couldn't handle the pace and obviously they didn't have the same budget. Then there was Moffat who had won 2 years earlier in a 1 -2 finish, which was really the impetus for the 78 and 79 Toranas, they threw everything at them to make sure they were as fast and bulletproof as they could be. There were others too but they couldn't stay with Brock at the speeds he was doing. I do understand your point, as much as it was a great win, it was probably also expected and maybe would have been a disappointment with any other result. Which win would you say is the absolute best one? I actually think some of his drives when he didn't win were better than some of his drives when he did. I'm thinking 85 and 86 when he was coming from behind and the cars failed, also enjoyed 91(I think) where he was storming through the pack and ended up crashing at the top of the mountain in a ball of flames.......
OK then since there were holden lovers that wanted to step out of line and Attack me and my favourite brand read these words : FORD is alive holden is dead, and the australian v8 supercars is bias against Ford always has been , its set up to beat up on Ford, thats why there was always way less Ford's on the grid than holden like10 vs 22 and Fords championship teams get bought by holden, Vodafone Ford 888 became vodafone holden wich became red bull racing 888 yet courtney beat them won the championship so holden bought him but Winterbottom beat both of them and holden eventually bought him too, and as it is now theres no parity, wich was clearly discussed before the season began, v8 supercars had shares in holden and now they have shares in Camaro hence why its got a huge advantage over the mustang on purpose, the chassis is aluminium the Mustang chassis is steal the chevy engine is a bigger displacement, the aero package on the mustang eats up the rear tyres the camaro aero package looks after the rear tyres, they slowed the gen 2 Mustang down with 14 changes to it till holdens could beat it, now that the Camaro is beating the mustang with big parity issues they are not slowing the camaro down by making changes they are pretending to improve parity but the changes are no where near enough, out of 25 races Mustang has won only 1 race , All of the mustangs haven't got a chance of winning and no one in v8supercars is allowed to talk about it because they say itll bring the sport into disrepute,????? its already in disrepute because its extremely bias it's more than bias its an all out attack on Ford by GM and v8 supercars, Ford is selling Mustangs v8supecars cant make the Mustang look bad by making a race series that has no parity , idiots will think the camaro is far better than the mustang, now is that a fair competition???? nope, put the latest Ford GT in the v8 supercars Camaro wouldn't win a single race the Ford GT will be doing 360kph on conrod strait, top speed with a Ford GT is 318mph, its just pathetic to be attacked by some moron holden fans, look here holden is D E A D, good riddance
People are allowed to like Holden as much as you are allowed to like Ford. And seems like we all agree the current Supercars is not too flash....parity is just one issue.... Would love to see video of your 17000 RPM Clevo on your channel.
@JakeDemuss90214 Holden had been making cars bodies well before 1948, both GMH & Ford Australia were Australian subsidiary companies of their American parent companies

So perhaps 1979 was the last year HDT was owned by Holden but certainly not the last year of HDT.
Thanks, have fixed the description. Funny thing is I knew that HDT continued after 79 but obviously wasn't thinking when I wrote that.

Parity is a nice idea but its not the same as everyone pushing their cars and engineering and the rules to the limit.....
Beats the crap out of todays race. Boring AF
I couldn't agree with you more mate.@@saltydog888
The introduction of the pace car would pretty much prevent it being done again. That doesn't take away from this being the most dominant victory ever, in the many races before & the 8 after this, no other car was able to lead the entire race
Ive sat in the actual car, at Lakeside few years ago. Original seat, steering wheel
I was like a devout Catholic visiting the Pope
That would be an amazing experience.
The original seat actually went into the commodore and hasn't been with the car for 40 years. Thankfully the original engine is back with the car.
@@obiemichaels9675 Is that right? It looked bloody 40yrs old. Tatty as hell
Think it was a SAAS.
No Momos or Recaros on their budgets....
@@peterhoare3219 yeah the original matched the trim in the car the one that replaced it is black and the original was removed when they raced the commodore in 1980, same as the original wheels aren’t on the car
Awesome 🙌
I love this. thank you for uploading.
Im gonna say '87 was arguably his best victory, winning by this much in '79 was very cool though. So was that car.
Yeah everyone is going to have a different opinion. I actually think 75 is right up there cause he'd been given the boot from HDT and they built that car on a tight budget and literally had to win to stay afloat. 79 is the one where he really showed his domination though.
No doubt thatA9X was the best car ever on the mountain @@BorkenGarage
He is not king broke like mark a wanker yer he can drive but held back Löwens a blocker of a driver both in nascar would been pitted who bitched to v8 super cars ford is to fast lucky that 6 was not put in. Holden made a crap engine brock bitch at the right time. And you don’t like. What I say well I new a few how ran the race track Holden where all ways bitching and lies. Then 90 % was on the track
The A9X fast back was the best looking Aussie race car by a long way. Second was a fully decked out XB Coupe and third the GTHO Phase 3.
The Legend ❤ 👑
Legend, as we all know
Yep.
Brock, say no more, nothing more needs to be said.
He even did it without crystals that year. Just the biggest budget.
like ford in 77
Yeah apparently 'that' Ford win was the reason Holden went all in on the A9X. They were a little embarrassed....
Fantastic video thanks for the upload
No worries
Cracker of a clip mate!
We all had to sit round the TV & watch Baffest as a kid (& turn it down if grandad had a nag running!)..
Where's all the time gone!?;
I know right? Was the only weekend I ever got up early.
That 308 was pumping out more ponies at the end of the race than when it started the race...
She was probably nearly run in by the end of the race. cheers.
Ran in right
Yeh. After 1,000 kms the Engine is broken in and all clearances are at the Design Specifications.
@no-namecrown5510 Also had an almost empty fuel tank
Please God bring back Peter Brock and Holden.
Dam those Torana's looked good😊
Legend in a legend of a car 👍👍👍
When folks talk about Max Verstappen's 2023 F1 season, they should also include the story of the man commonly known as Pee Bee.
Brock.
He's not just 'a' legend. He is THE legend all others to come after him aspire to be.
And then just this weekend we had mustangs and Camaros… I’ve sort of lost interest.
Yep you are not Robinson Crusoe on that one...

i did some digging...a Patterson sponsored Monaro came second out rite at Bathurst in 69...one of the first HDT cars...must have been not long after Peter Brock joined them !
Brock was driving a Monaro for HDT in 69 and finished 3rd.
McPhee and Mulholland came 2nd in a Falcon.

I haven't had a cigarette for 40 years, but I'm off to buy a pack of Marlboro's.
Didn't expect anyone to enjoy it THAT much that you need a cigarette afterwards 🤣
You mention Holden you better mention the name that went with it, Peter Brock
Torana A9X awesome car. most of the sponsors were cigarette companies.. they sure poured a lot of money into this race, back then. Winfleld, Marlboro, Camel etc. liked those big ford XC coupes/cobras. classics.
Love the Torry
The Marlboro Torana was the greatest looking touring car ever. How I miss cigarette livery. Such a shame it is gone
TO ME THAT CAR WAS MY FAV AND THE BROCK BROCK TORANA AND THE 93 VP ....
I nearly bought a used SS Torana hatchback 3300 from a Melbourne car yard in 1987.
It was $7000. I thought it was too expensive. 🤦
Peter Perfect
Brock the best ever
Sheer determination and domination in a master class by the master. What else can be said!
No denying the bloke's talent, but this victory was largely due to Holden (hiding behind their dealer network) spending more money than anybody else on their Bathurst campaign. It helped to have the most talented driver in that car as well.
How things have changed since 79. No safety cars. Just the tow truck driving around picking up crashed cars, as the others race past.
Yeah some people prefer it that way because the field spreads out and the leader isn't disadvantaged by having to bunch up etc but watching old footage there were some close calls with the back of trucks at high speed.
A9X best ever looking aussie V8 and i’m a ford fan
Epic
And still are
As superior as the Holden Torana was here, I truly believe PB could have won this and any round for that matter driving a ride on mower ffs!
As long as it had the right diff ratio 🤣
In the beginning Bill Pattersons Ringwood supplied the cars and backed the drivers !
I did not know that. When you say in the beginning do you mean in the Early 70's?
Not really considering the engine he had in it. Would have been a different race if the other Holdens had the same engine.

Dick Johnson was over ratered made a lot of mistakes that was put down as bad luck but just was just not good as may to be.
the sport was amateur back then theyd win by minutes ahead of second place,,,,,in modern day supercars they win by seconds or micro seconds and they sure as hell dont get into another car when their one breaks like brock did,
Moff did it first, he just didn't win so nobody remembers. He even drove for a different team after his car died....
cross entering was LEGAL back then
Nothing wrong with the Cleveland. Especially a Boss 351, or in a Detomaso Pantwra
Haha I hated the cross entry rules! Car dies... jump in the next one... win the race... weird! But it was definitely legal! 🥳

Id say this and 72 were his best.
1975 as a privateer was impressive too
Great days those. Great drivers, great cars, real competition. These days, the sanitized generic V8 soup cars, which bear no technical connection to road cars, are sooo boring. The rules made for close racing now, make the whole show so artificial. Haven’t watched Bathurst or any other race for many years.
Brockie, the “POLARISER” king.
Set the lap record on the last “race” … er, lap? 🤔
Fixed, cheers for that. Good to see someone actually reads the description 😀

Always been biased against ford, when were ford forced to use an entirely new front suspension & steering system & told they couldnt do any testing, mostparity changes have been done for fords benefit
Ford was always at a disadvantage given that they had to use production cars back in the day.

Yeah totally agree Barry, its just not the same anymore. Even struggle to get interested in Bathurst lately which is sad.....
It his most hollow victory
How so? You can't just say something like that and not tell us why. 🤣
