PD Simplified | Fuel Octane : What Should You Use?

  • Petrol comes in various octane ratings. Regular petrol is Octane 91, but there are more expensive blends that can be Octane 95, 97, or even 100. However, the higher the octane count, the more expensive petrol gets. So which one do you really need? The answer lies, not in this video, but in your vehicle’s user manual. Be sure to check it to see what octane rating your vehicle needs. Most vehicles sold in India will run just fine on regular pump gas. However, if you have a car/bike with a high compression ratio, it could benefit from an octane rich petrol. In this episode, Shumi simplifies fuel octane ratings and which one should you really use.

My Polo TSI's fuel cap has mentioned recommended grade of 95 Octane as it is a BS VI petrol engine. Which fuel should I use ? I've tried using Shell regular fuel and HP Power. FYI I'm a novice in driving as it's my first car so I'm not keen in fast performance, all I need is engine refinement.

It's almost 5 years now that i have put only premium fuel into my NS200(11:1). And i always felt that the bike runs smoother except for couple times that i have been forced to put normal fuel because of unavailability. I don't know whether it actually runs smoother or its just a Placebo effect 😅
Anyways premium fuel is just 3rs more per litre so , and the exhaust note changes with the fuel too 😊

And my car's fuel tank says Min 91 RON and Recommended 95 RON does it mean it works with both octanes? Then 95 surely must make the engine develop more power?

Are we getting a more relaxed engine? Or is bajaj just accepting that ron95 is not widely available. Let's just roll with Ron91.

I have 2019 390 duke. Has a comp ratio 12.88:1, manual specifies 91 octane. Back then the base octane on petrol was 87~88. I was using 97 octane as this was the lowest octane available close to my place. In 2019 1 litre used to cost around 105rs, base petrol was 87 I guess. I have used this for 2 years now, I have tried 95 octane recently didn't feel much different from 97 octane. I am thinking of going down to 91 octane as that's what is specified in the manual.
