    Easter from King's is available to download in HD from www.kingscollegerecordings.com
    An amazing documentary broadcast on the BBC Christmas Day 2014. Features rare footage from many years of the Carol broadcasts since 1954 and revealing interviews with giants of Choral composing today such as John Rutter and Bob Chilcott, both past choral scholars at Kings. As well as an interview with Jonathan Willcocks son of the great Sir David Willcocks who will be 95 this year. An unbelievably good Christmas gift and treat.

    So wonderful to see bob Chilcott x dearly missed stephen Cleobury talking. And my favourite carol ever The shepherds carol( well favourite modern carol) ...and the warm hearted choristers x their families. John rutter x bob Chilcott, who led a workshop at sheffield cathedral many years ago. What a thrill! And i met bob Chilcott again recently in derry as i now live in ireland. Beautiful evocative programme. Will play it often not just at Christmas.

    My wife and I always sit in the lounge with just the tree lights on and listen to the Carols from Kings, probably louder than the radio would normally be! This is the start to our Christmas, we then go and prepare the veg for the following day.

    I listen to this with my mum all the way over the pond in the Pacific Northwest. Sometimes she has several of her friends join us as they are from England as well. Her favourite is once in royal David’s city. It’s amazing to also here all of their stories about growing up in the 1950’s and 60’s in England.
    I’m truly blessed to to listen to them describe life in England just after the war first hand. Usually at least 2-3 of them will have tears at some time during the broadcast.
    Merry Christmas to All
    And peace on earth
    Cheers mates

    ONE OF THE BEST. I STUMBLED ON THIS CHOIR BEFORE I KNEW WHAT 'UA-cam' WAS. BUZZING AROUND DOING BAKING, DECORATIONS, AND LOVING THE CAROLS, READINGS; AND THEN SUDDENLY, I WAS LISTENING TO THIS DOCUMENTARY. IT CAME ON AND I STOPPED ALL MY CHRISTMAS PREP. IT WOWED ME THEN, & IT CONTINUES TO IMPRESS AND INSPIRE EVERY TIME I HEAR IT. FOR ME, IT TRULY IS CHRISTMAS! I LOVE IT AND HOPE TO PUT A VISIT TO CAMBRIDGE ON MY BUCKET LIST AND BE THERE IN PERSON ONE CHRISTMAS SEASON SOON. JOYEUX NOEL ET BONNE ANNEE. [AND THANK YOU, TOO, DEAR BBC!] : D

    Only the conductor knows who he has been chosen to sing the opening solo, until literally about ten seconds before he has to start singing. He points to the chosen chorister just as they go on air, and he steps forward and starts. This is done so they don't become too nervous with anticipation.

    I miss the choirs. I am glad that this tradition is kept on. When I was at school, we also did the choirs as well in Yorkshire, and we do put on a Christmas play, and songs too. I think it gives children a sense of community, and civic pride. Singing hymns in morning assemblies, and choirs should really be brought back to most mainstream schools.

    I'm not religious but, I do like to appreciate people's skill, dedication, passion, nostalgic expression and community cohesion in these events that evoke wonderful memories. The collective sounds are a culmination of such a great deal of work behind the scenes. I've come to respect those involved including families who support their offspring in their endeavours. I really enjoyed seeing/hearing excerpts from years gone by. It's a privilege to learn about the composers and daily lives of all involved. I particularly felt for the family of Tom when at the end it became apparent they'd lost their father. Very nice to hear it said he'd be very proud.
    Here's sending everyone involved in producing this annual wonderment and, to those who've brought this collection of festive, evocative, emotional plethora of beauty to us, a huge Thank you ;)

    Oh, come, all ye faithful,

    Oh, come ye, oh, come ye to Bethlehem;
    Come and behold him
    Born the king of angels:
    Oh, come, let us adore him,
    Oh, come, let us adore him,
    Oh, come, let us adore him,
    Christ the Lord.
    Highest, most holy,
    Light of light eternal,
    Born of a virgin,
    A mortal he comes;
    Son of the Father
    Now in flesh appearing!
    Oh, come, let us adore him,
    Oh, come, let us adore him,
    Oh, come, let us adore him,
    Christ the Lord.
    God of gods, light of light
    Lo, He abhors not the Virgin's womb
    Very God, Begotten not created Oh, come, let us adore him,
    Oh, come, let us adore him,
    Oh, come, let us adore him,
    Christ the Lord.
    See how the shepherds, Summoned to His cradle,
    Leaving their flocks, draw nigh to gaze
    We too will thither Bend our hearts' oblations
    Oh, come, let us adore him,
    Oh, come, let us adore him,
    Oh, come, let us adore him,
    Christ the Lord.
    Sing, choirs of angels,
    Sing in exultation,
    Sing, all ye citizens of heaven above!
    Glory to God
    In the highest:
    Oh, come, let us adore him,
    Oh, come, let us adore him,
    Oh, come, let us adore him,
    Christ the Lord.
    Yea, Lord, we greet thee,
    Born this happy morning;
    Jesus, to thee be glory given!
    Word of the Father,
    Now in flesh appearing!
    Oh, come, let us adore him,

    Well, Rodney Williams's comments are somewhat unfair to Boris Ord I feel. If you watch the video from 1954, Ord does not sing any notes before "Once in Royal David's City" and Williams gets his note from the organ.

      Jacob Sagrans Rodney was nervous, I don't blame him. Even I would get nervous when being recorded. That is why there is no recording of me playing the organ, however much I love the organ. Nerves in performers are understandable.

    Interesting behind the scenes documentary. Didn't realize Dr. C had been there so long running the choir. 1982?? Impressive.
    Every positive thing--skill, work, talent, the beauty of the product, tradition, stunning historic venue with that acoustic, has been said and needs no addition from me. See all the positive comments on the many videos of KCC on YT. They go for the best and often, very often, meet it.
    But pulling back the curtain, at least on the choral "scholars", the University men who sing the bass, baritone, tenor parts and so forth, killed some of the stardust. Sam Landman while well spoken and certainly no working class lad seemed very down to earth and with no airs. But those other young men, wow. Talk about posh upper class, in accent, diction and most of all demeanor. Very to the manor born, or at least it seemed to this citizen of a former set of colonies across the sea.

    • @Toledo1940
      @Toledo1940 5 років тому +1

      John Morrison: When Sam Landman was a chorister at King's, he had an outstanding treble voice. He sang the opening solo at the 2004 service; listen to it on UA-cam, and I'm sure that you will agree!

    • @waltertheus3467
      @waltertheus3467 3 роки тому +1

      Wow. How dare those well-behaved young Englishmen demonstrate good manners and proper decorum?? I suppose you believe that our college students here in the States demonstrate much more admirable personality traits and behavior. You don't know if these guys are "too the manor born" or not. Tom Pickard's father was a school musician on the Isle of Man before his death. I doubt he came from or made any money. His son was a scholarship singer at King's, then received a music scholarship to Eton, and is now one of those Choral Scholars in whom you seem so eager to find fault. So he's still effectively on scholarship.

      @@waltertheus3467 It is always interesting to find an observation mischaracterized as a withering attack. Far from it. I simply noted that accent and syntax is a class marker in England to a great degree. Sure, all elite private education has scholarship programs to diversify the student body. All for it. I'll end by saying I'm hardly a class warrior and I respect learning and proper manners in children of which we have so little in vast swaths of my own country.

    My thumbs down is for too much talk, not enough music.

      Donald Kane, actually, it assumes you already know the music, or at the least you can quickly access it on many platforms. It’s the best known and most sold Christmas album the Brits ever produced. So ... the purpose of this piece is to instead tell the history, the story, of the choir and college. So thumbs up instead? If you will, I will.

      Do you accept thumbs up if I don't have to watch it all?@@noaheinstein2369

      Donald Kane LOL. Actually just type in Kings College Choir or anything like it, on UA-cam. It has a dozens of pure recordings of the music with no narration, no history, no interviews, no backstory, just the same carols, same kids, in the same cathedral. Thumbs up from Rhode Island.

      Donald Kane, thanks for turning the thumbs up. You, sir, are a good and reasonable man.

    I came for the carols, and I left immediately for the crap narration.
