during ww2 the usa govt ordered closures of gold mines as they were regarded as non essential and try to repurpose their operation to mine strategic metals.also mines were told to cease gold mining operations to free up employees to enlist in the military/war effort and also join mining operations started up to mine strategic metals for war.
That was the cover up story, but FDR had seized gold from private citizens in 1933 then his congress passed the gold reserve act. FDR simply was a socialist. He did not want more gold to exist in private citizen's hands.

In the year 1933 FDR moved the USA away from there Gold Standard for currency. The US dollar was no longer backed by Gold, banks had free rein to print as much money as they wanted. Now we live in a world ruled by banks and the debts owed to banks

In 1940 the US was not in the war. But Canada was and that left only accessed by air boat. And the boats were getting sunk off the coast of Canada. So pretty much they only safe access to Alaska in 1940 was to fly. And that was probably filled up with military. And limited. So labor source probably was a major cause. And what percentage of the labor came from Canada?
