I very much doubt it, these are canny, secretive people. What they say and what they do are two completely different things. You can tell by the fact that they only let family work the mines, that they are not trusting of other people, and I can't blame them. The promise of riches brings out the worst in people. The show subsidized him for a few years and Hoffman crew probably for all but a couple years to get them where they are. Beets is the only one who would have succeeded at mining without discovery.
