Subaru STI Dream Track Toy: Revived Super Taikyu Championship Winning Racecar

- Old school touring cars have a soft spot in many of our hearts… especially of the JDM variety. This VIN-less Subaru STI touring car has a real interesting history, changing hands a few times over the last decade, and thankfully ending in an enthusiast’s hands. Which means that it still runs on the track, not just collecting dust in a garage.

Imagine doing interview with yasukichi yamamoto of opera performance his work will blow your minds he worked on builtbylegend x spoon sports type one
Passing that spoon Honda in the beginning made me smile
His retired THO!!
The civic was leading while getting the shots of the subie
man i would literally make replica's of that bumper just to get them out on the market ( and keep one for myself) this car is so cool. they take so much pride in the "stock" racing series. this car is more nascar than our own stock cars...
The previous owner of this car was my friend also known as Ryan
RIP brother. I’m so happy your car got a second chance to compete
The point of Super Taikyu was attainable performance. It kept cars as close to factory as possible to allow better competition and a connection to cars consumers would buy. Many Japanese tuners used the series to develop / test / promote their aftermarket parts.
"Win on Sunday, Sell on Monday!"
I just love that livery
No freakin way! I just met the owner last weekend at The Ridge! very cool bunch of people that run the team and the car is a screamer for sure
I’m a big Subaru nerd, this episode made me super happy.
Got to see this car in person at COTA... its soo cool. I specifically bought an 07 STI because I consider them to be the last Japanese tuner car that was still based on the golden era of 90's and early 2000's design. And seeing this thing was like the ultimate confirmation of that idea.
Saw it too and thought it was really cool but didn't know it had the past it did. Makes it even cooler!
Literally the only thing I think about since 2008 is subarus . The best cars in my opinion
That cage reminds me of the cardboard rally cages of the 70s and 80s. Such a cool car!
He should digitally scan all those one off parts in case they're damaged.
This guy gets it
lol
Happy for your Ryan to get featured on Hoonigan AutoFocus!! Congrats
Damn, sad to hear about the previous owner. I remember this listed for sale at wire wheel for a long time. Such a cool piece
That thing is ROWDY
The stuff that Larry covers is totally mind blowing. Amazing find, glad to see all the details, and glad to see it in the hands of someone who is also a huge nerd about it
I love my subarus, listening to this car is giving me goosebumps and shivers of a good kind.
Being a bearded mountain man from the Appalachians, who loves cars, I have to say I really love this dude from KY who defies appearances with his intelligence, driving skill (that's one you can learn in these here hills, lol), and interest in old Japanese race cars. Good luck with it!
RIP to this man's buddy 🥺❤️
This car was parked next to us at Gridlife NCM this weekend. Ryan is a joy to be around and the car is absolutely ROWDY.
Hell Yeah From the Bluegrass State
what a legend of a Subaru!!!! I remember seeing this as a kid at Tokyo auto salon in fujitsubo booth...
I got to see this car race earlier today. So cool
I remembered this more as the HPI Sprint 2 Sport RC car I have right here, it's cool to see that running around
Super taikyu cars really be the coolest looking.
Wow that was one of my first 'hobby' rc cars along side a Traxxas S-Maxx. Such a throwback.
Hahaaa the 100th like! And Larry Chen with the adult content of Hoonigan!
I saw this beauty on the track last weekend!
Man I love the fact that you could actually build this (mechanically) for relatively cheap. It’s not ridiculously modified
Wicked cool
Very cool - I used to have one of these(HPI version)
Big into RC still, I drive for TLR and Horizon hobby still... For the longest time racing RC was the cheaper form of motorsports but even being sponsored its still crazy expensive. Trying to build a RHD mid-engine GC8 now but RC will have to suffice until the project is done.
Love the coverage Larry and Team -
Oh snap - Ryan let me drive his autox prelude back in the day haha
Biggest shame in RC ever was the demise of HPI and all their bad ass 1/10 , 1/18 scale bodies
T'was a sad day indeed!! I still have my old RS4's and a super nitro Toyota. I raced them for a long time before Xray hit the scene and then switched over to them. HPi just didn't have the parts supported that I needed locally
I love the intro and outro soundtrack! Sounds sooo good!
I have an old HPi RS4 with this body on it in the same exact paint and livery. It's been a shelf queen since it first came out. I have the die cast car around somewhere too. LEGEND
Such a beautiful car.
Ahhh... ya'll didnt talk a out that crazy exhaust. A GD subie with equal length and what appears to be 2" dual exhaust that actual sounds cool. Might be the most interesting part if the whole car.
To bad the car bumper got destroyed after this event
All the send!
Car was so cool, back in the day, the HPI owner, would take all of us employees to willow springs and let us all drive it. Both of the cars were very cool indeed. Btw, when the cars were brought to the us, back in 07 there was a passenger seat installed. It must have been taken out since then.
I bought a set of wheels off the gentleman who owned it before and sadly passed away :/ literally the nicest guy ever and I’m still heartbroken 😔 but this is exactly what he would’ve wanted and what he was planning to do with the car. It was wild just to see this car in a garage in AZ.
Sadly enkei stop making such a awesome wheel. This feature delighted the Subaru nerd in me , thank you
Shoutout to the Lexington KY car peeps
I remember one of my favorite 1:10 RC TC was my Atsushi Hara Cyclone with sti body . Love the blob eye & hawk eye sti .
Yes Subaru content 🤍🙌
LARRY I know who has the orange Sti. He’s a really good buddy of mine. He has had it for years. Would you like to come to south Florida and do a shoot??
man, that car sounds amazing.
I saw this car a few weekends ago. I should have checked it out ore but i was too busy drifting!
Really cool car!
This is soo sick
Love this thing!! So sick it’s here and running!
The true testament of a bone stock V7 or V8 ej207
Very cool
For a minute during the intro, I felt I was in a simulator!!! Nice car!!!
I always wanted this exact body for my 5th scale FG 535 Gas touring car chassis, such a beautiful shape, and wanted the other livery, maybe HPI will bring it back now they are trading again and seem to be just roll out old stock at the moment, they need to pull their fingers out and bring something new to the market or they will be in the same boat again, I think they would do well to bring out a new version of their 5B/SC versions.
Dude id love it too! For obvious reasons! Throwbacks are cool right?
Crazy camera view... love it
I love that exhaust sound damn
Those Breaks Woo Wee
This is SO GOOD!
Og rc stuff wicked larry
Interesting story behind this car👍
there is a blue one too, I've seen both at the former HPI warehouse
What a gem!
That Spoon Euro R tho
I ran that body on my hpi for the hpi challenge back in the day!
22:45 that eclipse next to it looks WILD.
I have seen this one in person at a Subaru event in SoCal. I have a photo somewhere of the exhaust
Reliable fun haver! That’s priceless!
I got to chat with Ryan on my race Colorado Podcast, awesome guy!
You’re an awesome guy!
@@dsxmotorsports thanks man! You too!
The orange HPI STI is in Florida so you know!
*_hpi racing_* fans unite!
How does this vid only have 600 likes?!?!?!?!
That's an awesome ride! But did I spy a del sol in the background? How bout a feature on that?
It’s funny but thanks Ryan for keeping Ryan’s name on the car. Glad you ended up with the car
You could make some good money by making molds off the bumper and hood 🤔🤫
Id be trying to make mold of the bumper and hood real quick. rebuilding those from scratch would be ridiculously hard.
If you get a older laptop with XP or maybe Vista I guarantee that link on the site for the program will be able to download. I'm pretty positive it's just unsupported with new OS's which is why it won't even download because it's just an entire different language.
I would like to see an Evo Supertaikyu I hope you can find one
3:45 Man that's so sad. RIP :((((
Repping 719!!!
i have enkei rct-4 on my subaru. they indeed say "only for compitition use"...
F YEAH!
This car is so cool fuuuuuuu
Known for understeer from factory? Never heard anyone say that about this chassis before

I need those wheels on my Hawkeye
very interesting about the estate...
😹
Where can we find the photos?
Hellyeah❗👍
You should get all parts on that car scanned and make replica kits
I raced this rc in 2004 !
Just caught this, does anyone know if this car is an 02-03 spec C, that was gradually updated for the 06 style model year because it was still competing?
Ah! Sort of like Japan's VLN 24
Cmon now...that cage was part of race winning history....not lacking at all....it's not a 200 mph 1000 hp brute.....it's an entry level finesse machine.....heck...look at super vee or such groups....
I can fill a little backstory in. All alleged....
Mr Watanabe split from his wife (after 2008 but before 2010) and that lead to the end of HPI Racing. This chain of events meant many of Mr Watanabe's personal investments were scheduled to be sold to release equity such as assets from the company and car collection etc including the Enzo. Some however "appeared" to have seen sold but weren't, they were hidden in storage with his friends until after his divorce was finalised.
Later after dust was settled and Mr Watanabe needed money again the cars and assets of HPI resurfaced and were sold. I bought several RC items from the HPI "museum part that Larry may have photographed and they are here with me in the UK now. I guess the race cars had the same fate which would explain the missing years?
Need to 3D scan them front and rear
