  • Here is deeper look at the Sony PVM 2530 Trinitron CRT monitor. This one was manufactured in 1987. This one had lots of bad capacitors, cold solder joints, and lots of other problems. This is a restoration/rebuild overview. I will also walk through the area that you need to focus on for making adjustments and calibrating this CRT.

How does the 2730q compare to this one, better convergeance and geometry? 2730 and 2950 have Super Fine Pitch tube right?

Man, if I opened up a CRT I would be so overwhelmed looking at all those components. You do a great job at explaining things.

Thanks! Yeah this one in particular is a nightmare to navigate if you haven't worked on one before. So many wires and boards. Thankfully Sony consolidated some of this down in newer PVMs.

Amazing work getting that monitor working. I stopped by savon pat’s shop last weekend and he had a 2530 that he was working on. The corner convergence and geometry wasn’t great, and apparently the tube was going bad. But it still looked amazing at a normal playing distance to my eyes. It was my first time seeing one of these big monitors in person. Really impressive despite the imperfections

I'm glad that you got this one looking as good as you can. I know the two that you recapped along with the 32 are still doing good. (one of the 25s is in the garage for back up and a friend is using the other one.) You do great work Steve!

Holy smokes, all that soldering you had to do on that board makes me feel really good about the condition of my 2530. That is a lot of tedious and delicate work to have to do on that board surface. Kudos to your steady hands on that one, it'd look like a braille kindergarten reader if I had done it.

😆 yeah it was a ton of work but sometimes you don't have a lot of choice if you want it to work for a long time.

Love the content! I've been able to service my 36kv300 because of your content from yoke adjustmetns to convergence. I was initially very put out by geometry issues because as time went on I became conditioned to the digital age of perfect geometry. Hearing you talk about geometry being as good as it can be makes me feel much better about mine.

It would be amazing to find one of these, but Im happy with my 19in sets. If I go any higher Id prob just pickup a cheap/free consumer CRT like the D-series or Trinitrons. These big boys just have such a price tag now & a host of possible issues. Fantastic to see them running well though.

I like the cube pvm series. i have a similar model (2730qm) that i bought a few years back. i had to open the back of the monitor and put a mirror in front of screen to adjust the picture. that's took me almost 2 intense hour's, so i can imagine how much hours and effort it tooks u to restore this monitor.

I just picked up a 2030 and so far I am satisfied with it. I am waiting for the RGB adapter cable from UK, and then I will try adjusting the pots on the inside if needed. So far so good though. The only flaw I have noticed is the few light scratched on the front glass of the tube. They look like the could be buffed out, but I'm afraid of making the glass worse.

The convergence top centre shown at 11.08 - the fact the red is lifted above the white line - can be dialed in better by adjusting the yoke and the BMC magnet. The yoke could use rotating as well, which will probably help the dynamic convergence along the way.
I have a PVM-2730 in great condition (the non-US version of the same monitor) and yes, i would rank it above my 20" BVM. It's brighter and better and more fun to play on.

    • @RetroTechUSA
      @RetroTechUSA  2 роки тому +1

Thanks. This one really needs a yoke reseating I feel. I may go for it, but again the biggest problem is the risk of permanent damage. This PVM was in quite rough shape to begin with.

I’ve got one myself and really like it. I bought that cap replacement from u and the repair was definitely an undertaking. I’d still prefer that 2950q u donated to the museum in Philly. That ones probably my favorite all around crt monitor. My 2530 has the same issue at the very top of the screen that I cannot fix with strips and magnets but the screen looks great otherwise.

I just yesterday inherited a PVM-2530 so, I'm now doing all the research. It's in decent shape and seems to be working. Although, I thought it didn't work at first. I didn't get a picture until I actually plug a signal into it which was obviously a user error lol. I was expecting to see static with nothing plugged in but, then I realized there is no tuner built in, duh 😳. Did you make your RGB cable? I've been looking for a 25 pin to RGB cable but haven't found anything yet. I see people selling a lot of 25 pin to SCART and 25 pin to specific consoles for PVMs out there but, not really straight up 25 pin to 3 wire RGB. I downloaded the manual for the pinouts so, I guess I'm gonna have to make my own. I have a bunch of VGA to RGB cables that I used to use with projectors I could be used as a donor starting point. There are a few pins I don't know if I need to worry about or not namely: pin 1 (IBM Select), pin 9 (analog/digital mode select), pin 10 (RGB/normal mode select) and pin 25 (IBM luminance signal). I'm hoping I could just ignore them and use pins 4 (blue), 5 (green), 6 (red) and, pick a ground at 15-24. If you or anyone else has some insight on the 1, 9, 10, and 25 pins... I'd appreciate the info. 👍

What luck finding this video! I own a 2530 for several years now, and she’s always been finicky. The geometry is good, but after having it shipped during a move, it’s picture tends to wobble and flicker, and you gotta give her a smack to get it to settle like you would with a regular crt.
I just wish I knew what I had to do to fix it

I have a 2530 from 1994 and I love it but I’m having trouble getting the RGB input to pick up a proper signal from my Extron 700 scan converter via SCART cables from Retro Gaming Cables. It can pick up RGsB on the sync on green setting, but I’m having trouble getting picture from the sync on H/V setting. Do you have ideas what the issue could be? Also how do I set the monitor to high state from low state? Is there a manual setting? Can’t find the info in the manual. Love the channel sir!

HI Steve, I have a PVM 2530 also that was just recently served by Savon Pat. He was able to recap the boards but he mentioned he could not get RGB working due to some chip or board. Could that possibly be the input board you referenced in your video that has the RGB input connector? I would eventually like to get a replacement part some day so I can get RGB working but in the mean time composite and SVIDEO work so I guess its not a total loss.

Dear Steve this is probably the Best monitor ever made for 240p games, But if you want to redo the convergence you need to remove the yoke since most inner magnets get loose overtime a d you will get bad convergence at sides and also bad geometry.

I've had both (at the same time). The 2530's picture is tighter despite the 2 using the same tube. But the 25XBR is still awesome and I'd be totally happy with it had I not found a 2530 in good condition at a fair price. Really pleasant picture on the XBR.

If there are resistors connected between the buttons and a power supply (would be called a pull up resistor) then the issues with the slow response on the buttons could be caused by the resistors going high in value. Might be worth checking the value of the resistors if they exist.
