  • Shortly after completing their staff for the 2024 college football season, the Michigan Wolverines received the resignation of Greg Scruggs. Yesterday, about a week after Scruggs' resignation, Michigan Football announced Lou Esposito as the new defensive line coach. Esposito previously was the co-defensive coordinator and defensive line coach at Memphis for a few months, and from 2017-2023 he was the defensive coordinator and defensive line coach for Western Michigan Football. Having developed Andre Carter and Braden Fiske, who are expected to be drafted in the 2024 NFL Draft, Esposito has a proven track record of development along with coordinator experience. I just dont see the continuity coming together with this coaching staff right away. This is going to take some time. This coaching staff has to develop itself as well as players. I dont see the same level of coaching like there was last year, so I dont see the high expectations simar like the past three years.

      @Jon.A.Scholt 3 місяці тому

      I think something that no one has mentioned that is a huge factor in the hires, is that Michigan was behind the 8 ball from the jump. The timing of building a staff was so late in the cycle that it was always going to be much more difficult than if they were making these hires in early December, when the normal coaching churn takes place.

      I think it will take this offense time to gel,but the offensive should be able to set the tone early the running game should take pressure off of the qb and the wrs and te help in the run game and make the short and intermediate catches when called upon and limit the mistakes this team will be fine...we will still win in the trenches...Go Blue!

    The ranking of Michigan recruiting classes, relative to 18 invites to this year's combine, defines some important realities in this regard.
    There are no sure things in college football-going from one season to the next...so many moving parts. But the recency bias that is in favor of Michigan is very strong. Indications are that the internalized momentum of the culture of the past three seasons remains in place-and this is of great significance.

    Honestly as a Michigan fan I’m not impressed with these coaching hires from Sherrone. Only one I’m impressed with is Tony Alford which is already reaping the benefits. Wink I feel is just gonna be another Don brown.

      I do feel like we will need to upgrade from Wink in the long haul and I thought we could have hired better on the offensive side of the ball. However, Moore did a good job overall in my opinion, especially with Alford, Morgan, and Esposito.

      @@Jon.A.ScholtJesse Minter's defenses finished ranked 7th and 1st in the two years he was the MI DC. He's being replaced by Martindale, who was fired as DC of The Ravens after the team finished on a 6 game losing streak and ranked 25th in defense, and then last year's blitz happy Giant defense finished 28th. As for the other coaching replacements, is LaMar Morgan anywhere near the same level as Clinkscale? Are you seriously trying to say Lou Esposito is on the same level as Elston? Steve Casula's last job was OC and QB coach of a UMASS team that finished the last 2 years with a 4-20 record. So explain to me what is so controversial about what I said that's got you all pearl clutching. Especially when there are plenty of MI fans who feel underwhelmed. If you think these hires are on the same level as their replacements then fine, but save the faux outrage, as if what I said is some crazy "partisan" take.

    • @collegefootballwithsam
      @collegefootballwithsam  3 місяці тому +2

      I agree with you, but Michigan had the nation's best staff by a significant margin last year. I think we had a better strength and conditioning, offensive, and defensive staff compared to Alabama, Georgia, and Ohio State last year, which is absolutely absurd. The fact that Moore retained most of the offensive staff and made great hires on defense is impressive, especially given that Martindale is the creator of Michigan's current defensive philosophy. The Wolverines will not have the countries best staff this year, but it will certainly be Top 10 or Top 5. The Wolverines also had their staff leave late in the cycle, so Moore had to work outside of the regular coaching carousel to build his staff.

    • @collegefootballwithsam
      @collegefootballwithsam  3 місяці тому +1

      They will be the No.2 seed in the CFP this season by punching above their weight, just like they did in 2021. The Wolverines are not the 2nd best team in the country this year, and they don't even have a Top 4 ceiling in College Football in my opinion, but their consistency will help them win the games necessary to compete for another national title. If Michigan gets good transfers in the spring and retains their roster, they could be elite again this year.

      Your defensive line will be elite with the improvements they made last year (and should make this year) plus their returning production.
