- The Stihl MS 880 chainsaw is a BIG BOY. Today we are going to talk about what to look for when buying one use or for any issue you might not have noticed on one you have now.

I used to love running a 088 when did tree work back in 2000’s. Best memory is driving 30 minutes from main crew and climber forget his saw and we only had 088. First time and probably last time I’ll see a 088 in the tree.

Nice video Chris. I have a friend with 066 and 088 (old saws). I've run the 066 with a 32" bar cutting the root balls off of trees he dug out with his excavator. I never tried the 088, but watched his boys use it to fell huge cottonwoods that were too far down in the creek to get to with the excavator. He has owned both saws for over 20 years and uses them a lot. Buys chain in 300' bulk rolls and makes his own loops. Both of the old Stihls have been rebuilt at least once. GNI

Not sure if anyone mentioned but if you plan on saving some money by blowing out filters do it from the inside of the filter as in the clean side. Other wise you are actually just pushing the dirt further into it. The other way is to shop vac the out side off if you don’t have compressed air. Sweet saw man.

I was on the second largest cruise ship in the world sitting next to their speakers when they were setting up for a party at night. The speakers suddenly screamed louder than anything I've ever experienced and to this day I have hearing that hasn't recovered. I always thought it would, and the time has passed where I would have had recourse. But I use noise cancelling over the ear headphones now. I should probably insert plugs too. Thanks for vid.
Yes hearing loss is not something you get back.

Good video. Nice to see what the market is on the 880-1 series stihl saws. Pretty good bite out of his billfold . He must have wanted it, bad. Driving as far as he did, he was committed to buying. Had similar experience buying a 076 super off craigslist for 5. Had very little use, been happy w/saw was lucky w/saw on purchase. Don't use it much but it's great when I need it, last use was on 42" white Oak.

@Dan Bentsen, Yes I was pretty serious about it. I could have bought a new one close to me, I had it reserved at a Bucheits at a further location than the one near me. I called to go pick it up and an associate sold it not knowing it was reserved. I did not find one for a while until I saw this one. I sat on it for a while. I did look on eBay as well and they were going outrageously for them. I also looked at 3120 xp. There were no 3120 XP for sale anywhere either. I have had a few people ask me. Pretty much the jobs I will have will pay for the saw with in the first year.
Definitely going to have the power. I started at a young age cutting with my dads old homelite 909 it a beast of a saw. Them old timers were tuff to pack them in the woods.

I was really surprised to see the scoring on the piston for as nice and clean the saw looked. Then I saw the way they were sharpening the chain. I bet the scoring came from running it dull in the warm weather and getting it overheated. To bad people don't realize what kind of damage they are doing by running it dull.

Al, When I got home, I took it a part just to see the damage, Really the chain side of the piston and the center of it was scored. There was heating obviously from the dull/not sharpened right chain, There was bad fuel from the original owner. The right side of the piston was fine, The backside of the piston was not bad either. A dull chain can ruin it in a heartbeat if you just continuously run it and it gets hot. The jug is completely fine, so i am just going to order a piston kit and put in it and give it a tune up as well.
Improper oil/gas mix would be my guess the cause.
Thats the machine Chris ..I've got one of these when you are chewing on a 7' old man pine stump. I've got a 36" and 42" bar. The saw spends most of the time in the tree so you don't really get tired... mostly. Running square ground chain is a game changer ... the chips coming out the back you won't believe. And a barker box .... 22.3 lb .just the power head. 121.3 cc.

Tom, I do have a 41 inch bar and when I weighed it, it was just at 26 pounds, So that one was a bit lighter. I am not good at Square grounding a chain! I wish I was because you are the 3rd person to mention that. It is a mammoth of a saw We both found that out!
Its a hard thing square ground .. go see stihl fan swisse ..he has it nailed. I'm a year into it with a lot to learn ..i have mates who want to learn but some arent patient enough and the files are pricey .. you have the dremel sorted i think. In the huge wood i have it works really well ..in smaller wood ..the saving is not so much ... when you were battling with that stump with your smaller bar husky ..i wished i could have magic'd over to give you a hand. Youre a hard worker Sq ground makes it easier for me.

I have a 660 it’s the biggest saw I’ve ever run of even seen for that matter. It’s a beast and you don’t run it long because it’s heavy and it cuts so fast you don’t need to run it long.

@William Klein, I have a couple of 660 saws one I run a 25 in bar and the other i run a 36 in bar on it. They will fatigue you pretty quick. I use them only for felling trees. Some people wanted me to get the 500i, but I just cannot pull the trigger on them yet since I have the 660.

The closest Stihl dealer to me had the new 881 in stock 2wks ago. The big difference between the 800 and 881 is that the 881 is the 2-mix engine. It recirculates unburned fuel-air mix back into the cylinder. Saves fuel and lowers emissions while maintaining the same power.
How much was it?
@@InTheWoodyard, about 1900 with the bar on it. Wasn't a really long bar, 24-25in at most.
I had a job years ago where I killed a stihl 2 stroke circulating saw.
To be fair on stihl I was being really hard on the saw ( one of the original farm bosses ) doing stuff you'll never find in the user manual.
The job was on a coal mine which was both open cut and underground and I had to remove an old poly dewatering line that just followed the surface contours of the ground after it had come up from underground. From memory it was 14" pipe and there was a couple of miles of it to move and weld back together elsewhere.
My dilemma was the only mechanical joints in this pipe were either side of road culverts so I had to cut the pipe into 20 meter lengths while it was still full of water.
Surprisingly the saw doesn't react any different to cutting water filled pipes than it does to cutting trees. It gets pretty wet though. This was a near new saw and I didn't realize it was recirculating the exhaust back through engine so a week or so after this job the engine was seized solid.
I never gave up this sort of cutting but I did make sure the saws were run for a few minutes after each water cut to get all the water out of the engines.
On the same job and pipeline I was using a big mine supplied electric rattle gun to undo the flanged joints at the culverts and ended up squatting down in the biggest bunsen burner flame I've ever seen because this part of the pipeline had a big pocket of methane in it. I didn't get any burns at all but lost my eyebrows and some hair though.
The mine site was fenced off so the grass was about 6' high and it started burning too so I started out using my hardhat to ladle water from a big puddle on the road to put it out.
About 5 minutes later mine trucks started turning up full of fire extinguishers but it was a losing battle. Probably 50 extinguishers all up.
Not long after that the mines water truck which was one of those 100 ton Cats turned up with a water cannon platform up next to the drivers cabin.
Someone had to do it so I ended up on the water cannon.
This truck was amazing because it just headed off road following the fire line which was pretty extensive by this time. It was scrubby country and I couldn't feel it mowing down around 4" trees and the cannon only took one pass to completely extinguish the fire in the 6' grass.
Sorry Chris because that was the best job I ever had.
Another day at this mine I had to vacate where I was working for a scheduled blast in an open cut they were developing and with nothing better to do I got invited onto a dragline for about 30 minutes while it was working.
The thing was so massive it looked like a 3 story building full of massive electric engines with about a 100 cu meter bucket on it but the operators cabin was only about 8 sq meters or a big loo.
They'd blast the benches of the open cut and then use the draglines to clear it all the way down to the coal seam.
How much material can a drag line move?
Each pass with the dragline is less than 60 seconds and they never stopped even with relief operators working through meal breaks.
6,000 cu meters an hour or 140,000 cu meters a day.
That's moving mountains.
The thing even moved while I was on it which was spectacular in itself.
It sat on a huge steel pad and the tracks if you can call them that worked on a cam system picking up the pad and dragging it forward at a super cool 1 meter a minute.
Each dragline had two massive bulldozers with them. One to sort out the massive extension cord that powered them and the other to prepare the path where the dragline was going.
I don't know if it's true but I was once told back in the 90's that the mines total cost per ton of coal mined was $8.00 which is amazing as the coal seams were around 100 meters down and they were usually only a few meters thick.
On this mine they used to rip the seams with massive dozers before using loaders to load big 100 ton trucks.
There are better jobs than working in the woodyard.
Well us old timers get side tracked easily but thought you would enjoy the story.

Homestead Fabricator, you are correct with the 881! There is a few other features as well. There is a New Stop Switch that returns to the run position. That saves time, The Ematic Oiler is better as well. as well as It is about .5 lbs lighter. The cost of a 41 in bar and chain for the one I wanted in an 881 was 2039.99 plus tax add the 59 inch bar would have been right at 2600.00 The 881 with a 25in bar was 1969.99 plus tax.

@@InTheWoodyard I wanted 1 saw that could do it all. No matter what bar or task I have it do. I’ve watched serval yt video of other uses a chain saw motorhead can be used. I’ve seen post hole digger’s, concrete mixers or mud mixer. Can even arrange to be a motor for a bicycle. Essentially it’s almost 200cc when bored and ported.
For the chain fanatics: When you have a big wire edge (burr) on the teeth from reshaping/rehabilitating the chain there is another step you can take that helps the edge hold up better. A bit of background... What happens is the burr breaks off and spoils the edge the moment the chain hits the wood. Yes it is a small amount of edge damage but it is damage on a freshly sharpened chain! A simple solution is to stone the wire edge off with round and flat stones. It doesn't take long and the edge will hold up longer. The alternative is to hand resharpen after a few minutes of run time...
If you resharpen in a timely fashion, and stop as soon as the burr starts to form and the tip is sharp on a tooth, this isn't necessary. I hand file with a file guide and can see the tip and burr progress and can stop at the "right time." I seldom need more than 2-3 file strokes unless there is damage from dirt or embedded metal. Those big burrs from "over sharpening," or damage repair, are the problem...

Most of us around our logging town are all running 500i's now. There's just not much need for more saw than that in most day to day situations. I tried to pick up an 880 with a 36" bar once and it near tore out my rotator before I let go, that thing is one big pig.

@ADHD & ME, around here, People still use the MS 660/661 and now are going to the 500i like you said. I still have my MS 660 and it is in good shape, so i just could not pull the trigger. This 880 is just going to be used on special projects and a few big trees.
@@craigwilson9560 Instead of gobbling on and on about how big it is, just plant it somewhere, build a dang sawmill around it! Or, at least, put an air conditioned and heated cab on it, then get some work done with it!! GNI ha! I've seen some wild and crazee guys that put a V8 on a saw bar, pick it up somehow, and CUT with it!!! Had an Echo 099 with .404 chain. Had to quit using it. The timber logs got lost in all the sawdust!! The 064 is big enough for me.

Decompression needs to be up and throttle wide open for compression testing down will bleed off pressure to make it easier to start

I have a NeoTec clone saw of the Stihl 070 which is a 105cc saw and I have the 36 inch bar on it. The total cost for the saw and bar was right around $550. I get the big tree service wood so I needed a big saw but boy I did not realize just how powerful these big saws get. It's tough to start due to the recoil. But I'm getting better at it. I'm able to do about 10 cuts with the saw then I have to put it down just due to the fatigue and I dont want any accidents to happen. It's not a fast saw by any means. But it has pulled through some 34 inch diameter red oak with no issues. The amount of fuel it consumes is absolutely nuts as well. It may get better once broken in and then tuned, but I'm not expecting any miracles. This saw has also made me some money already as I'm able to make large slices about 4 inches thick that people can turn into tables or whatever other projects they may have. The large 30+ inch slices sell pretty well.

Jeff, those big saws do consume a lot go gas/oil mixture for sure. I did see for sale an 084 and was like that thing had to be a bigger boat anchor than this MS 880!
@@InTheWoodyard Depends on the wood. I have 34 inch round ambrosia maple for $60 per slice. 36 inch red oak for $50. I give good deals to people who buy multiples since my prices are high. But I dont give away my hard work. Running any chainsaw is dangerous work.

@David Edwards, It is not that bad to start. The 881 though are supposed to be easier to start yet, because of the new stop switch that puts it back in the run position after it is turned off. Helps to keep it from flooding.
Really fun video guys! I have run both the 880 and 3120 for milling. You really can't go wrong with either one of them. However, I think the 3120 gets the edge, as it's oiling system is superior, and it does have a manual override oiler which is excellent and necessary for milling. Otherwise, I'd be using an auxiliary oiler on that Stihl.👍👍💪💪

@The Bradleys On Catbird Hill, I was also looking for a 3120 XP to do the same. There were none for sale not even used. Everyone who has that Husqvarna are keeping them. 🙂 I may have to check on that auxiliary oiler. Thank You for this information
When my saws start to feel heavy, I pull out my MS880 and cut for a couple of hours, lightens my other saws up real fast! The MS880 really benefits from a muffler mod to help with power and lowering the temp. They are not that impressive for how big and heavy they are. My ported 395xp runs circles around my MS880. The Cannon bars while $$$$ are way nicer to cut with on the 880 than the Stihl ones, I have a 36" Tsumura light bar that I really like also, the the MS880 balances perfectly with full skip chain on that bar. Keep the clutch bearing greased, air filter clean, and a sharp chain. Enjoy!

I honestly don't know if you should clean the work bench now with Lysol wipes or just go with straight acid, to remove the Stihl cooties!!🤣
I purchased 2 Forester bars trying to save some money and lost money. Absolute junk...IMO for even occasional use! Buy a good bar and this beast will mill anything you can drag in!👍

That Stihl ms 880 is a nice looking saw! The piston is starting to score if that were my saw I would pull the cylinder off sand the cylinder bore and put a new piston in it. I guess that dull chain maybe made the saw over heat and score the piston But cool video!

@@craigwilson9560 That is the right thing to do because letting it go would maybe take out the crank and bearings. When you are done fixing the saw it might have more power and definitely make it last along time. Would like to see it run when you are done.

Awesome saw! Hate to be "that guy", but it's always good practice to put the spark plug back in the ignition wire and ground it to the engine when performing a compression test. Will prevent potential ignition system damage.

You are correct, Looking back on the video I was like shoot, I forgot to do that. I never been on camera before and trying to remember everything that goes on and not screw up is a chore. I envy Chris who gets out there daily and does it. I am just not that great at that.

A large internal volume compression tester will give artificially low readings on a small cylinder.

@Zack991 That is a great way to do it. I went through this one as well, New Piston on order, New spark plug, new Air Filter and Pre-Filter, New Fuel Filter. I did do a leak down test and it is fine so that is good.
I have a couple Stihl 880 and a couple Husqvarna 3120 they are both like having a 120 cc dirt bike in your hands with teeth that bite.

@@InTheWoodyard I run a tree care business in Southern California. Do alot of big Eucalyptus tree removals and some big Shamel Ash tree removals. No milling. I have them setup with 48 inch up to 72 inches for bar and chains.
@@craigwilson9560 the big saws are hard to find right now. I would recommend running the 880 on 40:1 mix ratio. I run all my big saws o on 40:1 because I had a lot of scoring issues on 50: Mixed fuel and it has seemed to fix that problem.
just when using those dremels you gotta be careful not to overheat the tooth if it turns golden or purple you got it to hot and it will lose the temper

Wouldn't want to cut firewood with it too heavy! My son has a 661. Had my 361 stuck in a tree. (Never happened before,) lol. Picked up his 661 about broke my wrist starting it. Its to heavy for me! Soon as tree was down I set it down and picked up my 261 for limbing. This old age is killing me. I do want a 461 though,

@Mark Howes, It took me a bit to get used to the MS 660. I use it just for felling. I use my 044 ,034, and 261 for limbing depending on how big the tree is. I do know where a brand new 461 is. 30 minutes from me if you want it?
Is it possible to have a scored piston on the backside where you can’t see it from the muffler side or is it going to turn black (assuming that’s what scoring is) all the way around the round piston?
@LeuCustomKnives, IT can happen on the Carb side as well. I did take it a part. Luckily, The scoring was on the front. It was Scored heavy on the chain side and down the center lightly. The right side and the carburetor side was ok. The jug was fine as well. I attribute the scoring on the chain side running a dull chain and it getting hot, the middle from a bad fuel mix. I did a leak down test and that was just fine.
@@craigwilson9560 dull chain meaning it wouldn’t cut only drag on the wood basically creating way too much friction? Would a dull chain heat up a bar too causing the white paint/coat to come off? Or is that from under oiling?

Someone definitely got the gullet on that skippy. Gonna be some crooked cuts in the woodyard! Wait what?…when doing comp. Tests, comp release need to be off. 2) throttle should…should (4 cycle engine definitely) be opened then pull 4-6 times or needle stops or arm breaks 3) makes sure ignition switch is off or install spark plug in cap and ground out to engine block with plug or alligator clipped wire while doing comp test.

I have the horffforma version. Was 1500 dollars cheaper and cuts the same tbh. I do plan to buy the ms881 tho I just don’t feel like spending 2200 bucks

That chain adds validation to the notion that just because someone owns and uses something doesn't mean they really know what they are doing... An associate of mine is a good example. He has a lot of discretionary income and buys nice guns, nice bicycles, and nice outdoor power equipment. He muddles his way through using all of that stuff... none of it is used to its potential due to his lack of skill and understanding and he wrecks stuff as a result.
Me... I stay away from saws with very dull chains and bars that show heavy use of the dogs as they have undoubtedly been run hot.

Speaking of ear plugs what do you use? I wear muffs on helmet would like to double up. Haven't found any plugs that work for me.

Don't necessarily need a new cylinder. There used to be a company in Fond Du Lac that replates cylinders of all types. Might be cheaper than a new factory cylinder. The aftermarket ones might not be plated to the same level of quality of the OEM Stihl.

Apparently, China has a knock off brand of ms880 - ms881 for 2/3 less that’s just as good. It’s was a brand from Harbor freight. I can’t remember the brand name, but I found out right after purchasing my ms881. I haven’t really used any other brands then STIHL power tools. I got an introduction to the STIHL brand when I was a youngster working as a ground’s keeper at my family’s horse farm. Im sure there’s other brands that are less expensive and maybe just as effective at cutting or chopping etc. but I never had a bad experience with the STIHL brand. I’ve since then I’ve put these Machines through same major work. Still work without any problems. My STIHL dealer always has the parts and the know how to fix.

If you are looking to mill a four foot log, you’ll need at least a five foot bar. An Alaskan mill swallows a lot of useable bar length. 880s are fantastic saws, but you’ll need porrage for breakfast, they are a workout.

Peter, I did figure that out when I got home. I will have to buy a 59 inch bar for that with the friends Alaskan saw mill. Thank you! It took me a while to find not one, but two. I did buy another one that was mint, it came with a 36 inch bar, and a 41 inch bar. You are right, better eat your wheaties!

@@craigwilson9560 cs400 I think. Bought it at a pawn shop. Paid about 1/2 is value in 2014. Used it about 12 times a year. Thought I could cut an oak tree to make rough slabs to make a bench. Boy was I wrong. But I did a lot of work at the paintball field in clearing fallen or dead trees and make lots of bunkers and bon fires.

@Happy Camper, If it needs work, $1000-$1300, In Good Used Up to $1500 and Mint Up to 1800.00 Depending on the bar. You also have to keep in mind the MS 881 are 1969 with a 25 inch bar New with a 1 year warranty.

Decompression valve in to do a compression test ? Why ? Surely you are not getting a true reading as it will lose pressure through the valve
You would have to ask a mechanic as to how they test them for accuracy.

Almost guarantee that piston "score" isn't deep most likely can't even catch it with a pick.

Nor do i have the equipment right now. I may in the future when the house gets done and I have everything in 1 spot.

Get rid of that filter set up 🛢 filters. Nothing gets past it.thats why that saw is scored .fines get in there and exhaust restricts. It's unbelievable how much you don't see going in.oil filters nothing gets in nothing .and you never blow again.except when you take it off to wash it.then put it in ziplock bag rub it around squeeze little out and blow the saw out .tighten it back on your good for days or week depending on how much you cut.IF YOU CUT firewood its slow suicide not use oil filters. That dry fines is for sure getting in piston if your using paper filters. Husky has better air filters but it's still getting in there .I like the husky s but they run to hot and can't be modified, plus I work on my equipment and they are much harder to work on unless it's older 395 style 372 style saws wich are heavy big boxy saws.when I started my business I bought thev5 series saws and they run hot.and actually weight more than stihk saws that are 10 or more ccs bigger .I used to never get stihl do to prices but rather pay it than suffer .Chris doesn't that sharpener you use harden the plating on the chains ⛓. I seen your video on talking about the factory using a grinder..they don't. Not same as what you think.they sharpen the teeth before they assemble the chains both Oregon and stihl chains I seen video of a proven logger that spoke with head of Oregon and stihl company's. It's done by machines with computers and they do each part of the chain individually. And are tossed around in a pan of sorts then assembled after sharpened first .it's why stock chains and rakers are not the same on new chains .every real logger will tell you this .thought you might want to know .guilty of treason fellow tree man did a video on this also with a logger who speaks to the higher ups at Madsen s that also verified this.im part polish from your neck of the woods .can't stand the heat down here in mountains. Miserable heat.its 75 today in January it should be 25 . It's raining lightning or would be out working.be safe
