Keep this content coming! I’m just starting my Hammond journey and these type of videos are so valuable to players like me. Most Hammond content I see focuses on jazz but I love the grittier blues rock content you bring.
I'm brand new to Hammond's. I acquired a cherished XK2 from a friend who's late father owned it as part of his roster as he played over the years, and I must say it's been a revelation. My collection spans from an 1850 Mission organ to the latest digital synths. Nothing gives me the same buzz as my XK. Great video, it's inspired me to head in the direction of playing blues. I love playing blues on the bass so it will be interesting to see what happens. Thank you for the vid 😁
Great Stuff Nick! Started out as a teen in the 80's on an X2 that came with a Leslie 147. Stupidly, in the mid 80's, I sold it to buy synthesizers (at least they were the synths that are sought after today). 30 years later I picked up the Hammond bug again. I have a dear friend who is a self-taught Hammond tech here. Someone gave me a 1942 Model D (we called it the "War Organ"... it sounded great!) I went searching for a Leslie to buy for it and found one at a local auction but it came with a tore up CV (1949)... My friend convinced me I would like the CV better (even though the Model D looked like it came out of a church and the CV looked like it came out of a biker bar!) but oh my word, yes, the CV roared to life. I'm having smooth drawbars installed next week (the original ratchet drawbars on my CV are functionally inconsistent). However, my friend now has found an affordable B3 (needs work) he tracked down locally for me so looks like I'll eventually be passing the CV on to the next person!
Nick just love your stuff brother thanks so much for taking the time to share, I have my Ipad sitting on music stand on my Kawai MP-7 and bring it over to my acoustic piano to try and learn some of these ass kicking licks, I enjoy it very much when you slow things down if I can learn it slow then I go over and try it on my MP-7 because I have some pretty good sounding B3 sounds with Leslie, nothing like the real thing but great to try some of these licks your doing. again thank you so much always looking for you on youtube
Thanks for this Nick, some very cool fast licks in there! I'd be interested to see what you might play over a slow blues, and how you might build tension in a solo where there is more space. And it is helpful when you go a bit slower and name some of the notes in the lick, which means my brain can keep up! I've used several of your ideas in my own playing so it's very kind of you to share these. Thanks again! Adam
Sounds like I need to sit down and plan a lesson with it all slowed down doesn’t it. I’ll get on that Adam thank you. I’ll write a slow blues backing too and see how that progresses.
Thanks for your reply Nick, that would be great! It would be interesting to see how you might use the drawbars in that context too. This video encouraged me to revisit some licks from 'Lazy', which is always time well spent!
Fantastic lesson, Nick! I've been an organ player for nearly 50 years now and this is my greatest downfall - improvising licks. Not to be a sycophant, but I liked everything in the video. I'm probably in the minority with your followers, but I would like if you could show the riffs more slowly. You did do that to an extent, but more of those detailed, slowed down bits would very helpful. Thanks and great job once again!
I think I have mentioned this in previous videos in more detail but most of the work is from the Profkon (see my video review) however there is some compression in the DAW along with console and saturation emulation to help glue the multiple mics together into a nice wide stereo track.
Great stuff, sir! Awesome licks. I love the Hammond sound, it's amazing. I'm just curious though: what are you doing with your left hand there? I can hear nothing from those key presses? Should I be hearing something? I've seen you doing that in other videos as well, and as far as I recall, there was also no sound... Problems with my setup here? 😁
It is making a sound. I have it pulled back a little usually as we have a bass player but it is holding down the key of the riffs in this video, quietly. I usually play the left hand root as it helps me keep better time.
@@nickfoleyuk I think I got what's going on! I just replayed a bit and noticed. Between 3:10 and 3:15 I can very briefly hear the low notes a couple of times. It disappears as soon as you play the right hand. I wonder if it is an artifact of the recording equipment/setup... Are you using the cell phone mic as your audio source? Or some other audio processing, like a compressor? I've seen this kind of thing happen before, where a louder sound makes the quiet one completely disappear, but can't tell you exactly what causes that. May be different things in different situations, who knows...
How about a lesson in changing drawbars through a song or solo. I notice that some high notes jump out louder at certain settings. How about a lesson on taming that down.
“Don’t judge me , these are hard times 👍 the rest was something no one shows to people so I thought it was brilliant. I’m on fence for after having -A,Bs w 122s to looking at under 50lbs , do have a couple of actually portable leslie’s but on clubs want the one leslie . @ this point of the ones reviewed w that in mind , some I may consider? How are you getting that much overdrive on the Hammond continuously? And how do I get that sort of grit from my XK-5, without having to use distortion pedals?

Hearing LAZY in 1973 made me want to play Hammond organ.

love that dirty growling sound. mostly associated with Jon Lord
Thanks you mate!
Great, thanks!

Hi nick what are you using to get your overdrive.@@nickfoleyuk
@@jeffconley819 I have a video all about it in my channel
Love it. I gotta admit though F is a very foreign key to me, which is an unusual thing for a blues/rock keyboard player to say.
People love Eb too, because of brass I guess. I’m average in Eb!!

it is possible to have technical lessons for blues solos with 'l ogano hammond? that would be great!
That overdriven sound comes from the Profkon ZD1? Anything else in the the signal chain?

I’m using a Profkon ZD-1. I have reviewed it on this channel. On my XK-5 I use a Lounsberry Organ Driver.
@@nickfoleyuk Thank you sir.

Hi Nick! What kind of mod is that on the lower left their cheek?

@@nickfoleyuk Oh cool thanks Nick!
Can we have the camera above the keys please
If we could I would! I’m looking at a ceiling-mount but I don’t have it yet.
Thanks but how about slowing down on the licks

Can't see the fingering Nick. I hear the notes so I know which keys, but your hand obscures the fingering.
I’m improving my camera angles. I’ll do a new video, try to make it better
You don’t teach as much as you show off. And that’s true as much for the tone as the overdetermined playing. Everything is big and brash.
