Four Hot Blues Licks for Piano and Organ
Вставка

- Take your blues playing to the next level with this piano and organ video lesson, in which I will first play and then dissect four blues licks. You will learn how to incorporate these licks into your own piano playing as I break them on screen with special captions for you to follow.
Although the current lesson will use an organ tone, the ideas can also be applied to the piano or almost any other sound (electric piano for example), so if you don't have the appropriate organ tone just follow along on your own keyboard of choice.
Now here is something very important every budding blues soloist should know: The trick for playing a successful blues solo involves learning a large number of licks, and then stringing them together seamlessly. Unlike jazz, blues relies on very complex licks incorporating double notes, triple notes, tremolos and many other dramatic devices which are very difficult to come up with on the fly as jazz musicians do. It is somewhat "cheating" but it is extremely useful and, well, works :). For those of you who want to learn more about my philosophy regarding improvisation in general, watch my video at:

Blues Licks (From Wikipedia, at en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lick_%28...
In popular music genres such as rock or jazz music, a lick is "a stock pattern or phrase" consisting of a short series of notes that is used in solos and melodic lines and accompaniment. Licks in rock and roll are often used through a formula, and variations technique in which variants of simple, stock ideas are blended and developed during the solo.
In a jazz band, a lick may be performed during an improvised solo, either during an accompanied solo chorus or during an unaccompanied solo break. Jazz licks are usually original short phrases which can be altered so that they can be used over a song's changing harmonic progressions.

This was one of the easiest tutorials for me to follow along! Adding the notation is such a huge help!!!
Thanks Angie. My newer lessons have ever better notation (including an on-screen keyboard). You might also want to watch this:

This simple lesson just changed everything for me. I can't thank you enough.
I’m a classically trained musician and never really improvised before - only figured bass in baroque style. I recently had a gig where I needed to improvise- blues. Because of this single video, I was able to do so! Our song was in Eb, so I had some transposing to do, but it worked beautifully!! Thank you so much for making it so easy and concise!! Much appreciated!
By the way I didn’t even notice any mouth sounds!! Until I read the comments! Too drawn in by what you were doing! Jeez man! Some people will find anything to whine about!! Thanks again!!🙏🙏🙏
Thanks Aritina.
BTW, the mouth comments just make me laugh, I have to stop myself from trolling some of them.
Can't believe that can be so simple. After 10 minutes I feel like blues/jazz piano performer :) Thanks, great video !
ME TOO WTF XD
😂
Yeah this too easy
True man me tooooo👍
I purchased a 100 year old player piano (minus the player parts) at Goodwill for like 80 bucks. It had four keys that didn't work at all and was seriously out of tune. So after fixing the broken keys, ordering a tuning kit, and learning to tune the thing I finally sat down to figure out how to play. Easier said than done. I hit a wall trying to learn on my own (a wall that I hadn't encountered when learning guitar, bass, or even lapslide). Then I found your UA-cam posts. Thanks for the lessons, man. You've reinvigorated me and my passion to learn.
Great hearing that, James. I can only take partial credit: the passion always comes from the player, not the teacher.
MangoldProject I agree in fact when I teach I think of my self as a facilitator.. literally from Latin facilis.easy. it's up to teachers to make something easier. KISS. That's an acronym.. there's a joke told .. new pastor of a church was thinking he was really impressing his new congregation. His wife handed him a note. It said KISS. Misunderstanding the note he thought she was encouraging him. Afterwards she asked why didn't he cut it short and told him what the note meant. Keep it short stupid.. not very respectful but funny. Different versions of this abound.
0:50 THE LICK!!! (Daniel Thrasher followers will understand😏)
I NEED IT
NO U DONT NEED IIIIIT
Ah! You riffed al over yourself!
i was legit about to comment this
Nah nah nah, Adam Neely ftw
i came to the comments looking for this💀
Perfeita a explicação. O Brasil agradece
Good Lesson. Thanks. I had not thought about how you really are stringing a bunch a licks together a lot of times when doing blues solos. That's a good point you made.
+George Carlin It's just like the 7 words you can't say on TV. Each one in itself isn't too funny, but when you string them together, that's when the magic happens :).
Alternate way to play Lick #2: You can substitute the pivot root in the right hand for a 7th, two semitones lower. This will create a tritone feel when combined with a root in the left hand.
These licks are GOLDEN! Thanks.
Man! I love your work here! Some really great tips and really easy to understand. Great teaching! Thanks you for making and uploading this video!

That lick that worked on all the standard blues progression is a real go to lick on the guitar also. Blues guitarist love it.. I do.. this is a nice lesson. ..
Great lesson and very clear explanation as always. I would like to learn more licks... Thank you!
Great video - opens up the mystique of these blues licks.
Very Cool thanks for your lessons......I play guitar and just recently started playing keyboard...I am learning alot from you...
Winging It I've played guitar since I was 12 .. dad started me on the high e string. Years later a older gentleman taught me the Chet Atkin's style. Back in those days you figured out the licks by playing parts of records over and over again.. sometimes it helps to learn something on the guitar and transfer it to the piano. My guitar stays two foot away at night . Yeah I'm addicted to the music of guys like Jerry Reed.. I love to play the claw.
Awesome lesson!

Be nice if you would break down the little licks you played at the beginning of the video. They were great.

Well done.
Very useful.

You're welcome Brendan.
That first lick was used by Billy Preston in Nothin from Nothin.....this is an awesome video, thank u
On he lick #2 I like to play it with a fast boogie bass line in the left hand. It gets very cool.
Molto molto bello 👍
Thanks a lot for the lesson
You are most welcome.
on the 4th scale it is also nice to harmonize the Eflat and Bflat when descending to give that thick harsher hit before reaching the G note. It works well in a triplet rhythm so C+Gflat-2-3-Eflat+Bflat-5-6. Nice video though thanks!
thanks for very good video and explanations
+diane frayling Do my best :)
very good
Thanks!
Dude, this has been a HUGE help, thank you!

8:35 I was hoping you would give some piano to get a feel of it - the organ is amazing, though. Something about that Hammon B3 sound that takes me straight to a summer hot blues concert in the sun, in my mind.
Thanks for sharing this
the blues nscale sounds good over the four chord. it has an unresoved sound that wants to resolve to the one chord. one of you viewers commented he uses a eflat and bflat together. i tried that sounds. a little pentatonic at slow. would you suggest a fingering for this modification. very nice tutorial.
very nice licks,i play by ear and this helps me on my creation of music
Happy to help out
this guy is gold!
Ahmad Haris nah man,, this guy is a human
By going down the blues scale, you play Gb and C to together, personnally i also play Eb with the Bb. My question is how do you do if you want to gp up the blues scale (which additionnal notes do you use) ?
perfect
Thanks great man
Thank you very much!!!
Thank you master!
