That Hammond C3 Beast sound (Jon Lord - Deep Purple)

Today I am looking at linking up the Hammond XK-5 to an external stationary tube amplifier and getting a dirty, fuzzy sound that you heard from the classic Hammond C3.
Then I introduce the Ventilator and compare it to the internal Sim, and much more!
The question is... do I leave the Leslie 145 at home for a dep gig later in the year or not?

Back in the times I had a Leslie 760 (solid state), with full volume on it automatically gave that classic Jon Lord overdrive. Great sound (for everyone except the monitor engineer as the Leslie was always at the side of the stage on his side not to kill the rest of the sound on stage). 😂

Jon Lord recorded passages in which he turned the organ's motor off and on, such as on "A200" and on the bridge of "Woman from Tokyo." This created a note or chord of rising pitch and turning it off would drop in pitch.
It also activated the reverb unit and shook the organ to create the sound of a boom.

Absolutely right he did. I don’t tend to do that as it takes life out of the starter and these things aren’t as readily available these days. It’s a great effect; listen to the end of speed long for an example of it too!

@@nickfoleyukyou can use a XK and perform this with the help of the pitch wheel without doing any harm. You know that, but others perhaps not.

I just discovered your channel and I'm loving it. I am not an organ player (yet) but every day the love for the Hammond organ grows more within me. I love players like Jon Lord or Keith Emerson, it'd be lovely if you could do some more videos on their playing technique and licks; and so when I get my Hammond organ I will be rocking to them! Cheers

Turning of the motor is a cool trick I used alot when using Logics B3 simulator. Unfortunatly I started using the IK Multimedias B3X hammond simulator instead and that feature is not featured in any other simulator then the Logic one. And yes most of you don't wanna use simulators(me neither really) but I must say that the IK Multimedia simulator is sofar the best software one I've found. I'm close to 60 years old and lugging around my M100+760 Leslie is just not something I want to do anymore since I play in several bands.

That straight amplification with the Tiny Terror sounds good. But it doesn't work with either of the two Leslie simulators. The issue is that the signal chain is wrong. Within a real Leslie the sound passing the moving rotors is what comes last. But here you have a simulated miked-up Leslie that goes into a guitar amp and the straight speakers of the guitar cab are the last thing in the chain. If you had your Leslie 145 miked-up and re-amped the mixed signal with a guitar amp the result wouldn't be much different. What could work though is if you had an all-tube guitar head with dummy-load. Then you could use it without a speaker cabinet very much in the same fashion as some preamp pedal. If you then go into the Ventilator and PA speakers you should get a much better result. That should also be interesting for silent recording.
A general remark on Hammonds and guitar amps: The Marshall Major used by Jon Lord in Deep Purple isn't a traditional Marshall amp, or guitar amp for that matter. The power section with four KT88 power tubes at very high anode plate voltages (around 700 VDC!!) was originally developped by General Electric to support the KT88 power tube that was just released. Marshall took over the preamp-design, adding either passive or active tone controls. What makes the amp special is that is an ultra-linear amp. This means that there's a feedback-loop between one of the taps of the output transformer and the grids of the power tubes, keeping the amp cleaner. If overdriven it sounds very different to all other Plexis and way fuller too. The only thing which makes it still a guitar amp is the preamp section. However, if you get rid of it, especially the tone control, it would just be a monstrous power amp, similar in concept to a 122 or 147 amp (with the exception of not being a class A/autobias design) but four to five times more powerful.

Nice work Nick. I enjoyed your video. I have been playing about with similar tests. Loving the sound of the Tiny Terror, definitely hits the spot. The Vent into the Orange though, as you said it isn't quite right. You'd get a better stereo Leslie sound from the Vent if you just used an A/B switch between the Orange and Vent direct (and monitor through a wedge or two). Obviously the 145 will be the ultimate solution..... but for two songs? Looking forward to your next video.

I believe the ‘klonk’ comes from the distortion being after the Leslie effect. If you would distort before the Leslie effect and then use an undistorted amp, it should sound much better.

Niels Schutten I think you are right there Niels. Thing is that for this particular gig the amp is supplying all of the tone and I only need the Leslie form one song so I’m a little stuck. I’ve found that the organ grinder pedal is a really good option here getting a good tone even through a slowly moving Leslie allowing me to be close enough and still have the Leslie when needed. I will shoot a vlog on that next I think. Thanks Niels!

Distortion with a leslie on(fast) sounds good only once in a while(great for effect) Keith Emerson i don't think used a leslie(according to him) i guess in the mid 90s he used it a bit more) Lee Michaels was known to be extremely loud in concert(it was pure volume(no distortion used?) or extra effects? Jon Lord only used supposedly a Marshall amp(not sure if he had the distortion or overdrive knob turned up?) he never says in the interview. I have never understood Keyboardists that need or want to use The Ventilator, yes on a cheap crappy keyboard with lousy organ sounds then i would agree, but most organs already have great sound with or without overdrive, etc, and MY Rolad VR09 has a great sound with overdrive and or organ sounds in general has drawbars, and has one of the best sounding b3 sounds of any normal stage keyboard, Nords are great as well, the Korg cx3 was good as well. Roland Fantom way back early 2000s had a wicked preset called Smoked Water, that sounded exactly like Smoke on the Water tone , and or Space Trucking, i guess a lot of keys players are picky? for what, and audience that couldn't care less, to drunk? to young to care about 70s classic rock sounds!!

The Rick Wright typical registration is something like 888888000 or at least 888888330 if you want a more “pulse” tone. In the early years he used to have a thinner sound, 888800000 with the 2nd percussion, and sometimes 008080000 (the first two chords of celestial voices in Pompei). The leslie is fairly clean, just right on the edge of the breakup, as in atom heart mother or echoes. Remeber that Ricks leslies were modified by Bill Beer, they don’t have the diffusers in the horns so the tremolo is more pronunced, and they have added weights to increase the ramp time. Anyway I’m hoping Nick to show is some clean floydish tones from his C3..

    • @MrKersey
      @MrKersey 3 роки тому

I've also found a referrence on the internet that one of Rick Wright's upper manual drawbar registrations was 888887654. The only person who can shed more light is Guy Pratt, Rick's son in law and bassist for Pink Floyd, who inherited much of the Rick's keyboards, including his Hammond C3.
