@@pritulkhan1395 Nice - We never made it to Essaouira - but I head it is quite luxurious there. We started in Casablanca and headed up to Rabat then across to Fez then onward to the Ziz valley and the Western Sahara. On the way back we stayed in the high atlas for three nights and finally ended up in Marrakesh, which as you known can't be missed. Need to get back there one of these days.

Hey thanks! I'm really happy you like my videos. It must have been a bit of a shock for any man standing in the field. But If I've learned anything from the Early Islamic Conquest and later the Berbers - in many situations - the battle goes to the side that just wants it more.

My wife (who is Latina) has been correcting my Spanish for years. I'm still trying to get a better understanding of how to pronounce Spanish Spanish - as compared with Latin American Spanish which was been a bit of a challenge. Tuareg people (Kel Tamasheq as they call themselves) have preserved the culture and lifestyle of Almoravids, including the veil (letham in Arabic or Tajoulmoust in Tamasheq). In fact, many of the used pictures of veiled people in this video were of contemporary Tuareg people. What was happening over the centuries was that Sanhaja of the west parts of the Sahara ( in modern-day Mauritania ) was being Arabized linguistically and genealogically. However, Senhaja in the east ( Tuareg or Kel Tamasheq) have preserved their language and Amazigh/Berber genealogy.

You seem to be having a few questions about the correct pronunciation of almoravides so as a Moroccan, allow me to help. You pronounced their Arabic name quite well actually, it's "Almorabitun". But the name "Almoravides", especially how it's pronounced by non Spaniards is incorrect. See, "Almoravides" was simply the "spanification" if you will , of "Almorabitun", But in both Arabic and Spanish there is no "V" sound (the letter itself does exist in the Spanish alphabet but it is pronounced similar to a B) so reading "Almoravid" with an English pronunciation is wrong. instead the Spanish pronounce it as "Almorabides" wich is a lot closer to the original pronunciation. Hope this helps. Keep up the great work!
Thank you! First and foremost, I’ve been to your beautiful country and spent three weeks traveling in a huge circle from Casablanca up to Rabat, Fez, And then on to merzouga . Eventually we made our way to Marrakech and back to Casablanca. Amazing scenery and the food was just over the top. We spent some time in Ziz Valley and saw where you grow your figs. Thanks for the help with the pronounciation - I watched a bunch of videos from people who were ‘scholars’ in the field. They would still pronounce it with the ‘V’ instead of the ‘B’ . It would make sense as you have a heavy ‘B’ when you say Ribat - where the name is partly from. I’ve already recorded the second part of this video - but I’ll keep this in mind for episode eight. Excuse me? There is a clear distinction in Spanish between the letters "b" and "v" and both are part of the Spanish alphabet. These people are called "Almorávides" in Spanish (with stress on the letter a, and the "v" sound is pretty much similar to the English /v/ phoneme. You are probably talking about the Andalusian dialect, which doesn't make any difference between them, as they don't make any differences between the sounds /c/, /s/, and /z/. The /c/ only before /e/ or /i/, so in Andalusian, ze = se = ce; zi = ci = si. Now /c/ after /a/, /o/ or /u/ sound like /k/. Thus, ca = /ka/ and so on. Andalusian dialect also does not make any difference between letters like "ll" and "y" and this tradition was carried over to South America, as the majority of the population of the Atlantic region (that is Uruguay, Paraguay and Eastern Argentina) still pronounce them as their ancestors from Andalucía. I, for one, don't make any difference in pronunciation when I'm in my hometown. However, if I go either to Madrid or any other Castilian city or to countries like Mexico, Colombia, and (especially) Peru, I have to adapt my pronunciation.

Maliki legal codex isn't the strictest of all islamic ones.. they are 4 and only differ in minor things based on scholar's judgement and chronicles of how community reacted to a certain subject or matter during prophet Mohammed time but not differ in the big red headlines of islam mentioned in Quran... The just release Almoravid is the 2nd in the Levy and Campaign series by designer Volko Ruhnke, the follow up to his successful game Nevsky - and one of the first operational level medieval historical conflict simulations I've ever encountered. If you like to learn history through play, I recommend checking it out (while I found this video while learning the history behind this game).

If you only knew the quips at this period. When alfonso sedged zaragosa, he requested a fan from the ruler. The ruler's message: "We will give you a fan from the moratun/Morvids that will blow you away." Another taifia ruler on that he might lose power stated:"I rather be a camel herder for the Morvids than be a pig farmer for Alfanso."
This Taifa leader was Al-Mutamid - he was the leader of Seville (one of the bigger Taifas). It was hard for him to agree to let in the Almoravids - but when he did he stated what you said. Camel herder to imply what he thought of the Sanhaja Berbers. He would fight along side them at Sangrajas but would later regret his decision to let them in.
Correct. Thank you for your responses to comments. Al-Mutamid might have regretted but he picked the right/better choice considering they would be conquered by Alfonso otherwise who would have done far worst. Al Andulus' fall was successfully delayed and lasted longer by bringing in reinforcements. The petty kings failed to unite and save their people. The Taifas lost legitimacy when they can't unite and resist/crush their foe in battle and advance to show strength. Their senseless tribute giving and alliances with crusaderswho wanted to see them gone was self defeating in the first place.

This would a way more interesting map then the one they made about the Vikings and Britain who knows maybe there considering it

Great video! Just one very very very minor criticism when pronouncing Spanish words. You over lisp just a little and your voice becomes higher pitched. I don't know why, but American men seem to nearly always go into a much higher pitched voice than their natural voice when pronouncing Spanish words, to my ears it always sounds super obvious and a little bit awkward. Very good pronunciation, just do it with your regular deeper voice and don't try to out lisp los españoles and you will sound like a native speaker. Again just a very minor nitpick, and thank you for covering this often undercovered point in our great history.

The Sanhaja do not originate in sub-sahar Africa, none of the Amazigh does. They all originate in Tamazgha.
They may have inhabited that area. The records I've read show them being displaced by others into the north

so, this is beginning to exit the realm of islamic mythology and beginning to enter the realm of western history. there's still some funny shit, but it's fading out; i'm going to wait to comment.
the one thing i want to say as i finish my eggs and leading into the next period is this - karma's a bitch, isn't it?
this is also where the islamic mythology stops being silly and starts interfering with real history, which is partly what it's engineered to do. the almoravids would actually agree with me, in suggesting that islamic spain wasn't that different than the rest of europe, in a lot of ways. but, when you approach the situation with this near-myth of islamic tolerance, these punitive taxes don't come off as retribution but as aggression. it's only in recognizing the nature of the caste system (with it's punitive taxes) put in place by the muslims that the punitive taxes enacted by the christians in response, once they took over, can be seen as retribution; if you weren't presented with it that way, you might almost even see it as a reason to take the side of the almoravids, who were there to liberate the muslims from these barbarians and their vicious taxes.
cheek-turning aside, he gets the point across that there was still substantive resistance to islamic rule in the 11th century, even if he skips the opportunity to point out that the heavy taxes were a little bit of their own medicine.
the reconquista gets a lot of shit from the contemporary fake-left, and it's partly in not understanding the context, due to having the issue framed in a biased manner. oppressive taxation is one thing, but i can tell you that i wouldn't have any problem standing in solidarity with anybody fighting against these almoravids - for as long as it took to drive them back into the sea.

This is complete rubbish. Why do Western whites only focus on the wars and battles of this kingdom. This kingdom reigned over 800 years. That's 500 years longer than the United States, if which the US may not see another 100. But you only focus on the battles, you brush over and fail to mention Andalucia brought Europe out of the dark ages. Led the world in science, medicine, botany, astronomy, art, fashion, and hygiene. It was the Golden age of monotheism all under the African rulers of Islam. You fail to mention these were Moors mostly, not white Arabs. Moor and Arab is distinctly different. All of your alchemy, Freemasonry, occult ate derived from these Moors, yet you only focus on the battles. That would be like me talking about America and starting with the murder of Indians, slvery of African, and war waging in the middle East, and that's how I describe America to a generation 1000 years into the future. Poor work sir. Do better. This was possibly the greatest kingdom to exist that contributed more to humans than any society.

@@FlashPointHx My opinion on this subject is not a negative one, as I love the videos that you have made about Al-Andalus, the Christian kingdoms, and the Reconquista. However, it would be cool if you made videos about some of the things that Louis brought up, such as Astronomy, Alchemy (or medicines in general), and trade. They all provide a wealth of content and would surely help expand your channel into some cool new directions. Keep up the good work!
