I'm wondering: gearing things up will make the spinning axle have less force i.e. it is easier to stop it. If the friction becomes to much, nothing will happen. Is this true?
BIOBAY Yes you're completely right if I've understood your explanation correctly. Gearing up an set of gears will give the output axle less torque but increase the speed
So what happens if you turn it around, could you get like a verry slow moving axle with a ton of force which would be much harder to stop with your hands?
Some guy on Flickr made a 2JZ-GTE from Lego with working pistons, you made a gearbox. I think you guys should collab and make a huge-scaled Supra with a great number of functionalities)
@@postgibson4160 It's just like the dumb Forinte Supersoaker I bought just for the meme, completely overpriced and overrated. You pay for the brand name because it's licensed but the thing itself sucks for the price you paid. 20€ down the drain in my case.
No your not completely right. Some people like to build free wheel clutches in between the motor and the gearbox so the wheels don't drive the motor but the motor can drive the wheels. As far as I've seen free wheel clutches can't go backwards so you wouldn't be able to use the reverse feature of the motor and you'd need a reverse gear in you transmission.
@Cako1000... Good modern electric vehicles have a motor per wheel, adaptive all wheel drive they keep on about. so you would need four mini transmissions all with reverse. Plus I thought that the wheels driving the motors was how they recover energy back to the battery, so that means on top of the transmission for each wheel it would also have to have an some way of having harvesting the energy an alternator of sorts Wowsers, even just for two wheel drive... thats inefficient and expensive... I'll stick with my combustion engine lol
Why would it have a reverse when you can just use a switch or a infrared controller to make the machine you build this transmission into go back and forth?
I bought bricks from brick owl totaling 57$ and some motors and batteries just to build this! I will totally use this in a technic car I plan, keep up the good content!
there should be a part of lego technic where there is sets that are just mechanical functions. A gearbox set. A simple chassis set. A V8 engine set. It would be really cool
I still have a lego car present given to me nearly fifteen years ago. It features a V8 engine with a 5 speed gearbox plus reverse with three diffs. This isn't exactly new. Nice that you figured it out yourself though.
Dgustafsson13 I built it within 15 Minutes yesterday, just missing some gears and the Driving Rings. Do you reckon it's possible to add a reverse gear to this Gearbox? I have an Idea, but need to wait for some parts.
hi guys so i am here new to lego technic and i have watched tons of videos of gearboxes so i have some questions 1. What is the benifit of having a gearbox? 2. Where should i use it in normal chassis or in rc chassis? 3. How should i use it? 4. Should The input should be connected to the differential gear and the output to the fake engine (like v6)? 5. What is the difference between types of the gearboxes like manual automatic and differential? 6. Also if you have anything importent other than my question can please say that notes and please can you summarise me of what is GEARBOX. I WOULD REALLY APPRECIATE IF YOU ANSWERED TO MY QUESTIONS. THANKS.
1 the benifit of a gearbox is speed if you just have 1 speed that's the max. the more speeds the faster it will be, just look at cars! 2 the one in this video is better for a just adding a motor in front you will learn how it all works better. 3 read the above 😂 4 yep when u are in first it will need power from the wheels they go to the differential that brings it to the shifter and after that it Wil go to the engine, BUT! in real life it goes from engine first to shifter to differential to wheels. 5 manual is with a stick and a clutch so you do it urself. Automatic is when u set it in drive and it shifts itself (these are better in rc cars) and the differential is not a gearbox. Well it is but u can't shift the diferential. 6 it's all what I explained above😛 I hope it helps u in ur further creations From Thijmen Steen (13) From Holland.
At first I thought, that would be cool in a Lego car, but then I realised the obvious limitations of not being able to shift it while it was moving (without some really cool and advanced Lego RC components) but then I thought, imagine that on a Lego plane, have the propeller slowly speed up. Or just do the obvious, hook up to a Technic V8 Block
+Sašo Kornet Thank you very much! Not really, because of the way LEGO gear pieces are designed, a clutch isn't really necessary. Besides, the load it has to handle isn't that large either☺

Awesome video man. Question: I have seen some videos where the output shaft becomes faster without stopping first, but in this transmission it stops before going up a gear.. What is the difference between the two transmissions and which one is used in real cars? Thanks!
I can't say for sure until I've seen the other gearboxes you're talking about, but, I guess there's no difference at all for the gearboxes, instead I think it's about how fast you actually shift. I shifted gear slowly in this video to show how it works, and the other one you saw may shifted very quick. The gearbox in a real car works like the one you saw in this video.
AWESOME, compact, functioning and still a challenge to build. This should be added to a lot of big lego technic sets!
+BIOBAY Thanks a lot! Yeah shouldn't it :)

I mean this thing is more reliable than shifting in a wrx
I mean, who needs a clutch anyway, just dry shift that bad boy.
R doesn’t mean reverse
It means race that why when you use it on a highway the police pull you over
By the time you needed reverse you'd already have a head gasket failure
To be honest. The gearbox looks like an engine already XD

why is every second comment asking for a reverse? a dc motor gives you six of those too
A lego remote control has a reverse handle right on it soooo....
Yeah it's only the likes of the mighty combustion engine that needs reverse gearing..

With XL motor torque this gearbox could struggle. It's in the way that the 8 and 12 gears are connected on the front side.
896gerard It sure can struggle, though when placed in a model it's supposed to be reinforced on the ends to prevent those "end gears" to slip
@Dgustaffson13 den är rätt så kompakt för 6 växlar och den verkar funka väldigt bra!

I think you could make one of these from a Lego technic set
+Wessel Put Positive to that hypothese👍🙂
Is there a 2 speed version that can shift on-the-fly with an EV3 medium motor?
The worst part about this, is the ratios are all back to front, 1st will always spin faster than 6th
Just flip it around. Now 1st is 6th.
Soo nice !
+Felix Bauer Thank you!
What is the partsnumber called, witch make the gear-switch have a longer distance? Would be great to hear from you.
Can i drive it from the output?

+The IrrelevanTAKU 👍👍☺
I know there is a part list, but where did you buy the parts? Pick a Brick doesn’t have all the parts.
