If you haven't watched this on Netflix...do so now. It will blow you away and piss you off and make you laugh then blow you away again. I tip my hat to this guy.

I was just watching this on netflix, and thought... good lord this is so lame, it's like reality TV. The art is too modern, it's recent. This has to be a staged art project or something. The 'sun face mold' thing was a big red flag but all the pieces up to that were strange. The one figure that looked like it was modeled after after a Barbie doll and another close up of a piece with the face of 'Rihanna'. It was so bad I was skipping to the sculpture reveals. So I looked up the title and it is a Damien Hirst art project. I'm so glad my brain is not crappy. So happy and satisfied with myself. Thanks Damien.

I fell for this bloody thing like a bastard lol Thinking back, I shouldve realized it was fake by the orchestral camera pan over what I read at the time as a 'Made in China' engraving when dramatically exhibiting one of the female statues, or even further back (albeit, the very beginning of the film) when they had the mammoth/elephant skull thing. But goddamn when I saw that golden medusa head I was utterly engrossed. Hopefully Netflix puts up a mockumentary category next time something like this shows up.

Firstly, the fact that it is marketed as a true documentary, rather than a mockumentary, is because it is a work of art. By that I don’t mean it is great but, instead, I mean that it is intended to provoke an emotion in the viewer that the viewer would not have otherwise experienced had he/she watched a true documentary. That’s the only goal common to all types of art, be it visual, musical, dance, etc.
And second, because the above, Netflix would only have spoiled the artistic nature of the film had they classified it as anything other than simply “Documentary”. Because of that, I think you’re being too hard on yourself - it was designed to fool you and other documentary watchers who, I think it could be proven, tend to be a more intellectual type than those who watch mostly fictional programming (Tho I expect your statement to that effect to be more tongue-in-cheek than purely factual). I mean, you had your suspicions all along, right?
I, myself, turned it off in favor of other documentaries in my cue more than once because I kept, erroneously, getting the feel of a dockudrama which I rarely watch. In fact, I was jumping ahead and landed by chance on the Medusa head segment. When I saw them remove the oddly barnacle-free head from the water and immediately transfer it to a tub of sea water I knew something was up and came straight to UA-cam to find out it was fake. I should have endured the entire thing so that I could have experienced the moment you evidently had.

@@negativeindustrial There are people who actually go out and risk their lives to explore and find things underwater. I find this kind of elaborate prank annoying. This may be art, and wonderful art it is, but the video is not a documentary by any definition. A documentary is not something meant to deceive.

I had a feeling watching this that it was fake. Some of the artworks had a more modern pop-culture style to them (like the medusa head) rather than a ancient classical style and looked like they were created using modern techniques (The big gold sun god plate looked like it had a 3d scanned face.). Shame. Some of that stuff was impressive.

The entire time I watched this I was thinking... these sculptures definitely don't look ancient, stylistically. One even looked like Rihanna. And now it's so obvious! I feel betrayed lol

essentially the work engages in a conversation around the concept of belief, there is more going on to do with wealth, history, nature, slavery, value, art etc also. why get upset or feel betrayed when every tv show or film to varying degrees asks you to suspend belief in order to engage with the story?? we're not angry with star wars or the latest pirates movie (maybe quality). clever shows like the office (the uk version) confused initially and played with questions of whether it was real or not... (remember gervais was unknown to many at first), there are many examples of sharp mockumentaries that do the same... the humour is lost on so many... never mind the incredible feat in the making of these works of art...

Yeah well it was a grand idea and execution and I'm honestly not mad the whole thing is a work of art the promotion is genius and the theme is awsome he created a new form of art that was brilliant all of the pieces were amazing and to make it appear to have been lost to the ocean for ever and be found on a fluke through something someone had seen on UA-cam come on this shit is other worldly I love it its all his Owen

I'm surprised anybody believed it to be true after the first discovery! 1st or 2nd century AD and most weren't even remotely covered with anything.

I just dont get it. Does he really put all his brandnew multi-Million Dollar Art-sculptures into the Ocean, just to make a fake Dokumentation?

  • @chris-8092
    @chris-8092 6 років тому

incredible sculptures but the belief bit which hirst claims was really a lie. these sculptures were never from a shipwreck. some people like myself did not appreciate watching a long video about these sculptures which was a complete fabrication and it was inappropriate. Just be honest about your sculpures. there was no need to create such an elaborate lie using a video

I was interested at first but then the first thing they pulled out of the ocean who was a massive elephant head with jaw intact.. I said no fucking way and as I said that the narrator said it was a hand carved skull. No no but yes yes it was a hand carved skull. Lost all interest in the documentary after that and went back to watching the peaky blinders!

Was the point to make people feel foolish and lied to? I wasted my time on this idiot, I've always been interested in history and nowhere did it say this was fake, or I wouldnt have wasted my time. Fuck his art or whatever it is, he intended to troll and succeded.

Think Damian over did it this time... The exhibition would have been nice if this piece of 'shit """Documentary"" Wasn't made. Art lives in the mystery. Let people make up their own minds. Trying to push them into a believe.. man, that is just amateur... If you make a piece of art and you need a fake docu to 'explain it'.. Low Low Low. Also Netflix made a little mistake here, to actually label it as documentary. But well, he most probably knows he is gonna make millions out of it from rich 'art collectors' anyway. But, if you don't involve the public in your work anymore, please don't try to involve them with delusions...

I had been debating on cancelling my Netflix account for a while, since they never update their content, are raising their pricing and only putting up their own shows now like it “Netflix the tv channel.”
This documentary had no disclaimer. I noticed the Egypt sculptures were depicted as white with green eyes and also one of the sculptures looked like Yolandi from Die Antwood. I decided to look it up.
I cancelled my account and won’t be back. I absolutely HATE fake documentaries. They were the whole reason I stopped watching animal planet too.
So, f**k this has been artist with his racial appropriation. And f**k Netflix not having any disclaimers.
