The First Photographs Ever Taken of Iran [1848-1858] by Colonel Luigi Pesce + Persepolis, Old World

  • Howdy ya’ll. Welcome back. I’ve found an astounding collection of the very first photographs of Iran, all taken by Colonel Luigi Pesce of Naples, who was deployed to Iran in 1848, in charge of training Iran’s new infantry troops up to the Italian Standard. While stationed in Iran, Luigi Pesce gained an appreciation, some would say a love, for the ancient structures and artifacts he would come in contact with on a daily basis.
He decided to combine his new appreciation for Ancient Iran with his favorite hobby, which was the up-and-coming technology of photography. From 1848 through 1858, Luigi photographed the cities, monuments, and people of Iran. The photographs are very clear and detailed for the time. Today we will view his seldom seen, yet historically important collection in complete detail.
To look at the Old World through the lens of the Middle East, with a focus on Iran, we find numerous structures in this collection; ancient sites of biblical importance, photographed for the very first time in history. I’d love to hear your thoughts and ideas in the comments down below. Please subscribe for more videos just like this one; Thank you for 72k subscribers!

Hi Jarid, thank you for the compilation! We were born & raised in Iran & have visited some of the locations you showed growing up. Mom kept an album and she has many photos. In one, she is looking out of the opening on top of one of those swinging towers called “Menar Jonban”. She was telling us how the tower would swing so gently and both towers used to swing together. The story was that the British came and dug up one of the tower bases to figure out the mechanism and couldn’t figure it out. She remembers visiting an ancient so called “Bath House” which would heat up and light up by just one candle. When they turned off the candle, it would go cold. She said again those same British took it apart but couldn’t figure it out and left it destroyed and that bath house never heat up again!
We even remember when we visited the Kish island in the Persian Gulf one summer long long time ago, we were taken to the site of a subterranean city that had just been discovered but hadn’t been dug up completely yet. This was in the middle of nowhere. we went on a tour bus and as we approached we saw a huge yellow taped area on the sand where one portion was exposed. It was guarded of course. We remember seeing long stairs going underground. The “story” was, the Portuguese pirates built the whole city underground to hide from authorities! We were not allowed to take photos or get too close. Needless to say when we returned, we never heard anything on the news or anywhere else about that site. Recently we found out that an ancient city was discovered but in 1999 which was years after we had visited the site! This didn’t add up at all and, and, and they have “modernized” the whole place! Whatever that means. We think it means they have taken their sweet time, i.e. years in removing all the artifacts, redesigning the whole area to make it match their narrative.
Sorry for the long comment. Thought it would be interesting to some.

Wow, these pictures are pure gold. They are the testimony of a very advanced technological civilization, with gigantic buildings and monuments. These cities were abandoned long ago and the few people around look minuscle in proportion to the structures. In the picture of the bed I thought I saw a chandelier🤣 and in others what seemed to be glasses on the windows. Thank you so much for sharing them.

What Colonel Luigi has done deserves respect and appreciation.
Yes, most of these structures have been restored and are still standing, unlike Colonel Luigi, other archaeologists have taken many treasures with them during their ancient investigations.
Most of which are now in the Louvre Museum of France, the Metropolitan Museum of America, the Hermitage of Russia, the British Museum, and Florence, Italy, or other private collections. Among them, Cyrus' Charter of Human Rights, which is now kept in London, England.
At the end of the Qajar and especially the Pahlavi period, more than 8 million recorded historical works left Iran.

In 1826 the first photograph was taken? Let’s say that Luigi’s images were taken approximately 25-30 years later… I wonder how much other stuff disappeared in that timeframe, never to be seen visually again? The building’s/architecture of old were clearly built/constructed by extremely skilled ‘craftsmen’ and their work of then… well, it hasn’t been matched since. Why is that?

Thank you for posting this. I was born and raised in Shiraz, the closest large city to Persepolis (the Greek name for the site) or as we call it Takht-e Jamshid (Jamshid’s throne). I believe you mentioned the king on the throne at the time this photographs were taken incorrectly. Mohammad Shah (Qatar dynasty) ruled from 1834 to 1848 followed by Nasser Addin Shah from 1848 to 1896 (unless it was an understandable mispronunciation). If you ever have a chance to see this site do not hesitate. To say that it is magnificent is woefully understated. A good portion of the ruins which were either in disarray or covered with dirt at the time of the photos, are now restored and reassembled and there is a museum on the site were artifacts that were unearthed are on display. What a shame that this world heritage is under the fist of a government that cares nothing about the Iranian people and our glorious roots.

This really hits home for me because I am of Persian decent through my grandfather on my mother’s side and I’ve never had a chance to know him so when I watch things like this I’m blown away by my heritage and it makes me extremely proud to be directly related to such a special people in the history of humanity. The Persian empire impacted the modern and ancient world PERMANENTLY and had left their mark on society. Modern day history that’s being taught in schools is all inaccurate and full of biased lies and deceptions to force a narrative about the ancient ethnic world that is entirely inaccurate. Cyrus the Great was and still is the only human king ruler that is revered as a Messiah type figure. No other human king can claim that title PERIOD! Now I am a Christian by choice because of my studying I’ve come my conclusion about the one true God but when I read about my people in the Bible it brings me joy and a sense of pride to know that even God Himself loved Cyrus and anointed Cyrus the Great and loved all people’s including the Persian people and our history all being intertwined makes the mystery of all things a giant puzzle and this beautiful place in history is just another piece to that puzzle. Beautiful video man the whole thing was a pleasure to watch thank you for your content

Tyranny is preferable to democracy, because now our mind and soul is imprisioned. Our thoughts are no longer free, although our bodies seemingly move without boundaries. Mind over matter. We are spiritual beings in a spiritual world. Free will is an illusion. Free your mind. Open your soul. Spread your wings and fly. Take back control. Destiny is fulfillment. A) Changing the name was done to distance us from our glorious history .
      B) only 50% of Iran is Persian ?
Azeri , Kurd and etc ?
We don’t have a single foreign group in Iran and everyone you mentioned has Persian roots .
Persia has fought 1000s of wars and has won most but it is natural to lose a few wars .
Every time we lost a war the nation got occupied for a while and the occupiers left a trace in our country by mixing with some of our people.
For example when the Ar, Ar,Arabs occupied our nation since the south is where all of the harbors were and was a hub of business they concentrated there and that is why we have Persian-Arabs there .
The same with everyone else .
      Türk = mongol+ another race .
The first time the name Turk was mentioned in the history was in 8th century in Kyrgyzstan.
If you look at the Turkic nations they are all on the mongol westward expansion path to Middle East.
That is why the people of Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan are all mongol looking .
I am a ghashghaee Turk and the reason we don’t look mongol is because we are not mongol Turks , we are Turco Persians and we are central Asian Turks .
This doesn’t mean that we are from Central Asia , it means that we didn’t mix with the mongols directly, we have very little central Asian blood in us .
What is the difference between us and the mongol Turks ?
Imagine you marry a Venezuelan girl and bring her to Iran and live and die there, then 7 generations later your great great grandchildren will still have a very little Venezuelan DNA in them . I am 85% Persian, 8% lur and 7% central Asian .
Does this make me a foreigner in my land ? No.
If I was 7% Arab should I consider myself and Arab ?
      F$&@$ NO. 😅

I hope someone in Iran would do a comparative photo exercise to see how well (or how bad) have these sites been preserved over the past 175 years! Proper preservation of one's history is indicative of a nation's culture and civilization, and a reflection of its stable or turbulent politics and economic wellbeing.
