    Good video, I wish I viewed it before I replaced all my connectors with Milton high flow. I replaced my compressor with Quincy QT-54 for my Tacoma blast cabinet and darn near got neutered when I removed a air hose. I ordered all new safety connectors thanks to you. Keep up the good job.

      The safety feature of the Prevost is really nice, high pressure air lines and tools can be very dangerous as you found out! I have been running the Prevost for two years now and still working like new! I do keep a few spares on hand since you can't just run out to any hardware store to get them. Sounds like you have a very nice set up now!

      Thanks Joe, Now that my entire system is installed in the new shop for over a year now, using a 1" copper loop to the 3/4" Rapid Air MaxLine system making a complete continuous loop around the shop with the Prevost High Flow fittings, I would not change a thing and have more than enough dry air! Hi Ray! I am Curt. A 58 year old retired Dairy Farmer that just backgrounds a few hundred steers and sells quite a bit of hay. I am always working on something in the shop! I am like you. I have a bunch of different air tool ends that are that M and T style. I wanted to just change it all out for a higher flow fitting. I came up with Prevost. I really liked the couplers. I then decided to see if there was any info on UA-cam. Came across your video. This sealed the deal for me! My question is why didn't you go with Prevost hose? What brand is the blue one? Thanks again for this video. Now I know I'm going the right route!!

    • @RaysGarage
      @RaysGarage  Рік тому +1

      Hi Curt, I already had a lot of air hose but the Prevost hose is very good! The Blue hose is Goodyear very flexible and strong, not as flexible as the Flexzilla and a little heavier. I have to say the Prevost high flow fittings are the best I have used! Milton does make a highflow fitting but is bigger and more bulky than the Provost. Thanks for tuning in, you will be very happy once to switch over to all the same fittings! Best Regards, Ray

    Congrats on getting the ok on your shop! We run style V connectors and 200psi air in the shop I work in and it makes a 2135TI max IR impact perfrom like a 3/4 only with ha;f the weight. :-) Surprisingly the extra pressure has not broken any tools that I know of.

    Interesting talk about air supplies and fittings - I do think you are right that too many folks are running pipework and fittings that impede air flow and as a result do not obtain the performance they expect from their tools and equipment.

    Hi Ray! Nice to see another video. I was especially interested in the information you provided on air couplers. My cousin was disconnecting a tool from his Craftsman portable compressor last year. When he made the disconnect, the hose went flying and he was struck in his right eye with the coupler, basically smashing the eyeball like a grape. The safety disconnect would have saved his eyesight (he was already legally blind in the other eye) and he has since spent many trips tp UCLA having several surgeries. I had been planning on making my couplers uniform and now I see how I want to go. I am curious to see how you plumb the shop for air.
    Nice plans on the shop and I am happy that things went well with the city. I am envious. (-;
    Btw, I spent Superbowl Sunday in my shop as well.
    Thanks and take care.

    Don't forget that the area (and air flow) is related to the square of the diameter, so 0.187" to .290" is not 55% larger, but 140% larger. Same with the hose: 1/4" to 3/8" works out to 125% larger (more than twice as big).
    McMaster-Carr also sells the "European-Shape" air fittings (with the "0.290" bore). I refitted all my plumbing, hoses and tools to this style back in 2003. It sure makes a difference. Make a few adapters for Euro to standard and standard to Euro so you can visit other shops and adapt to visitors.
    Thanks for the tip on the pipe dope, and nice air-tool rack design.

    • @royreynolds108
      @royreynolds108 7 років тому +1

      Mr. Meek don't you mean radius squared instead of diameter? Area = Pi x R x R. You are on the right track. If you double the diameter the area goes up by 4 because of the squaring the radius.

    • @PeterWMeek
      @PeterWMeek 7 років тому +2

      It doesn't make any difference. If you start with any linear dimension, it will be related to the associated area in relation to the square of the linear dimension. Try it yourself two ways using both the radius and the diameter.
      Area = d^2 π/4 D x D x pi / 4. One of the most useful numbers you can memorize is pi over four (0.7854). Trace this out on a calculator keyboard - it makes a nice little square. If you are calculating a lot of circular areas, type in the diameter, hit the square button, and then type in [ times .7854 ]. One perfect area after another. (I spent one whole summer doing this on a mechanical calculator determining the scrap left from cutting points on bolts. .7854 is engraved into my brain forever.)
      It's the relationship that counts. Things like the "4" and π in the equation above are constants, so they don't affect the relationship at all. When I am calculating such relationships I completely ignore all the constants. If I see a circular area that is 5 inches across being compared to another that is 11 inches across, I don't calculate the actual areas, I just square the linear dimensions and say that 5 Squared (25) is ~21% of 11 squared (121). Who cares about the actual area? It is the relationship that counts.

      Hello Peter, Thanks for the great info on air flow, man what a big difference the larger plugs made, all the air tools are much more powerful now! Thanks for the backstory, have a porch I'm extending a to the right and the town now wants a variance (didn't need it when I did the left extension and was even urged to go to both sides by previous town officials. Now it's gonna cost me a pretty penny to finish the other side.. They just want their share of any money they can get but that's another rant..

    Ray, thanks for sharing. I've been using the same connectors and couplers for a few years and love them. I also like the Flexzilla hose - I just wish they made one in a coiled version as well. Best coiled hose I've found that's 3/8 ID with 1/4" NPT fittings is Coilhose PRE38-154B-T. Not cheap, but terrific. I have a few suggestions for your shop based on my own experience (I'm on my 5th from scratch shop now). 1 - a laundry sink is a lot more useful in a shop than a conventional bathroom lavatory - you can soak stuff in one, clean paint brushes, have a place to rinse off degreasers, etc. 2 - put 200 AMPs in your shop from day one - doesn't coast that much more, and then you never have to think about it again. 3 - I see no provisions for natural light in your shop - reconsider this. 4 - consider running copper pipe for your air distribution in the shape of a U around the shop at 7 feet above finished floor and held out from the wall 2-3" with spacer blocks, then you can cut and pull taps off the main feed wherever you needs develop - and they will change all the time, trust me. Glad the city seem to be cooperating with your shop permitting - I've experienced it both ways, and when they fight you, it's a real PITA. I'll be interested to follow your progress.

    • @RaysGarage
      @RaysGarage  7 років тому

      Thanks man! Yes, Legacy/Flexzilla does have a coil hose they call it the Recoil, I saw one at my local hardware store but it was only 1/4" ID if it was 3/8" ID I would have picked it up. I do know Coilhose Pneumatics have a 3/8" ID coilhose in several colors and lengths. I am looking into the RapidAir system for the new shop, looks like a nice system but still undecided at this point.

      Just FYI, everyone I know who's been enticed into installing Rapid Air system (about 10 in total) are disappointed with their decision and wish they'd used copper instead. Comments include "no cheaper than copper once finished", "difficult to add/change/delete", "lots of leaks" - so do your homework and check around.

    Hi Ray,
    I like the look of the Flexzilla hose. Unfortunately it looks like it's only available with NPT ends, not BSP.
    It's air pressure at the tool *inlet* that determines performance. Low restriction lines make a big difference, but don't overlook your regulator(s).
    To some extent running a higher system pressure will give you more flow through a given bore. I helped someone trying to work on the end of 200ft of hose. Going straight to the compressor tank and running a regulator local to the tool got the job done.

    • @RaysGarage
      @RaysGarage  7 років тому

      Hello Paul, I am liking the Flexzilla hose so far, can you adapt from NPT to BSP? Might add a little more bulk to the hose ends but would allow you to give the Flexzilla hose a try. You could also shoot Legacy a email to see if they have the Flexzilla in BSP. I am also thinking of making a dedicated large bore maybe 1/2" ID hose and fittings once the shop air system is built!
      Thanks for the info!
      Best Regards,
      Ray

    It looks like the slots are a little bit tight. We recently made an air tool holder out of about 16 ga steel. We cut keyhole slots out on the CNC Plasma table and bent it on the finger brake. There is even a shelf on top with a edge around it to store air tool oil and miscellaneous parts. I bought my first Flexilla hose a couple of years ago and fell in love with it. A while later, Lowes had the 3/8"x50 retractable hose reals with their hybrid hose on a Black Friday for $49.99 and had to get a couple of those. I hate having to use any of my old air hoses now.

    • @RaysGarage
      @RaysGarage  6 років тому

      Yes the slots were a little tight so I just milled them a little wider and now they are perfect! My buddy Paul over at ZTFab makes a really sweet air tool/can holder check it out, www.all-a-cart.com/product-page/wall-mounted-spray-can-rack-and-air-tool-holder
      $50 for a reel and hose is a smoking deal man! I love my Flexzilla hoses except for my 1/2 ID one does not like to coil nice when charged with air but other than that they are awesome! Thanks for tuning in! Best Regards, Ray

    Another good one is the ( P ) style plugs/couplers. They have a 1/4 NPT and wide open body, I believe they flow about 70 cfm. The way they attach the coupler to plug is thicker so there is less movement in the fittings rather than the ( V ) style, those can leak on you. Not all of them, but some of them I guess it depends on the price and who makes them.
    Part numbers for Milton brand, as follows:
    m/f: Thread: Type: Part #
    Female 1/4 FNPT (P)-Type plug: ( 1810 )
    Male 1/4 MNPT (P)-Type plug: ( 1809 )
    Female 1/4 FNPT(P)-Type coupler: ( 1803 )
    Male 1/4 MNPT(P)-Type coupler: ( 1804 )
    Now if your running say a 1/2 hose you probably have 3/8 MNPT male threads on both ends, you will need a coupler on one end and a plug on the other.
    Female 3/8 FNPT (P)-Type Coupler: ( 1805 )
    Female 3/8 FNPT (P)-Type plug: ( 1808 )
    As long as they are all (P) - Type they will all plug into each other the same, regardless is its 1/4 NPT or 3/8 NPT... The (P) style is consistently the same 3/8" style connection.

    Thanks for taking the time to make the video. I have a question about the I.D. of the stock fittings on the end of the air hoses. I've found they vary quite a bit. Buying and installing high flow fittings and then having an air hose (even 3/8") that has small inside diameters on the hose fittings will restrain air flow. How do the Flexzilla hose fittings I.D. compare?

    • @RaysGarage
      @RaysGarage  6 років тому

      Thank you, Flexzilla does make a high flow line of fittings as well so the ID of the Flexzilla air hoses are made to accommodate the larger ID high flow fittings and the 3/8" hose is 3/8" ID

      Wouldn’t a 1/4” Npt thread attached to a V series .281 ID max flow still be restricted by a .250 Npt opening so the only open max volume you ever achieve with 1/4 is .250 ? Much better than .208 from universal fittings like M and T , Even a 1/4 npt to a 3/8 barb fitting would still be limited by 1/4? Trying to figure how to maximize volume on 1/4” fittings as well but I believe it’s limited to the thread size unless you have a way of moving off a smaller thread size to the next size up which would be 3/8npt. But using v series does allow you get the full .250 or better which I like great video even if it’s a old one ☝️

    Hello Ray, The new shop plans look good. One other thing regarding air to keep in mind is that similar to electricity (current) is distance equals resistance. So if you have very long runs it might behoove you to go up a size in delivery lines and then if you want use a smaller 'whip' off the main line to run the tool without dragging the heavy hose. You also want to check out the 'memory' in air hoses because if it has high memory it will fight you every time you use it. For cold and memory I still use Goodyear rubber based hose (I often use it in sub freezing temperature) as I haven't found any of the composite hoses with high plastic content that compared. I may have missed them but I have tried several to no avail. Harbor Freight has some good ones and some bad ones with good prices. My experience with coil hoses is different than yours as they seem to snag every damn thing in the shop or even the same hemisphere! I tried one for a week several years ago and it went on the shelf. The weather has improved for the time being so my shop expansion is progressing (slowed by the old fart --me-- doing it!) hope to be weathered in by summer. Painting yourself in a corner by trying to figure permanent places for tools is difficult for sure. Take care. Doug

    Honestly you have done a wonderful job here by sharing from your experience based on your personal research so you don't have anything to apologise for and personally you did not say anything wrong here and if at all you made a mistake in some of the things you said the truth is that nobody is perfect we all make mistakes and all that you are trying to do is just to help so thank you for everything and I really commend your effort.I checked the Prevost site and I can see that these connectors comes in different colours,do you know if they are colour coded for different purposes or they just decided to have them in different colours because the one you have is green and I saw other colours there like red,blue,black and some others.Secondly I have an air gun that came originally with the M type stainless steel connector with a fine thread which I think should be the bsp ( British Standard Pipe ) and I want to change it to the T type connector because I prefer it to the others and it is what I have used for the connection of all my tools and equipments so I want to have it as a standard for all my connections but unfortunately it is the coarse thread that I have seen so far which does not fit the air gun.Do you have an idea where I can check to get the T type connector with a fine thread so that I can use it for the air gun or if there is a way that I can get the T type connector for the air gun.Thanks again for the wonderful job that you have done,it is really appreciated and I look forward to more of it"s kind in the future.

      Thank you for your kind words! I am not sure on Prevost's color coding, I know mine are the 3/8" High Flow Safety connectors. Safety means that it won't shoot your tool or hose out when released, great feature! I do agree with going with one type connector for all tools and hoses plus have spares around. I am not sure where to find fine thread fittings, you might have to do some research. I can say I am very happy I went with the Prevost High Flow Fittings and changed everything over to the same fittings! Best Regards, Ray

    • @danbrown586
      @danbrown586 4 роки тому

      The color coding is for the type of fitting--blue is "industrial", read is Truflow/automotive, green is Euro high flow, and a number of other colors for other styles. If you have existing quick-connect fittings, the odds are good that either the blue or red will be compatible with them.

    Welcome to 20 years ago for me ;) I have been all 3/8 hoses since early '90s.
    I don't like the coiled hoses, they get caught on things. Would be nice hanging from the ceiling.
    I have three ports in my shop. 1 hose reel with 50' hose and regulator between garage doors. 1 for the plasma cutter.
    The third, has another regulator and an oil fogger. I run air tools off this. I keep hoses dedicated to this as you would never want to paint with them.
    Lastly, most compressors and cheap regs/filter combos are crap 1/4 size. The flow is terrible. I have a 1/2" Norgren filter, water trap. reg and oil fogger. It works great. My other regs are smaller Norgren. My impact is usable on my hose reel with the good Norgren 1/4" regulator.
    I removed the crappy reg off my compressor and connected my shop lines directly. Others have used the large inspection port on the compressor.
    I have drilled out some of my 1/4 fittings. I was looking at going all 3/8 but they are harder to find. I'll try some of those hi-flow fittings. Thanks for that. I like those safety fittings.
    I have gone away from Chinese junk regs, now good fittings is next on my list. Will definitely try some of those better fittings.

    You came very close to answering my question about air hoses. As you probably know air volume (CFM) is limited to the smallest orifice in the entire system. So you have a Flexzilla 3/8" ID air hose, but have you measured the ID of the end fittings on the hose? My hoses appear to be high flow but if I look deeper into the end fitting the ID is reduced. Have you checked your Flexzilla? I am curious what the ID of the end fittings are? I cant seem to find anyone who sells hoses and knows the actual ID of the hose end fittings. They all say their hose ID is 3/8", but they dont know what the actual end fitting ID measures. Thanks for the video.
