It holds up so well, too. The character models are pretty much the only thing that keeps it from passing itself off as a contemporary indie game. Too bad the sequel got a hard on for over explaining everything.
Me too. I got my system for FEAR actually but Condemned worked flawlessly as well. Together with Doom 3 these were the 3 Wise Men that guided me through a path to follow the graphical quality in games. Don't regret a thing.
@@KnarfBlack The second game was a disappointment but it did have some great levels such as the Hotel and that Doll Factory but it was let down by it's over use of guns and like you said, it just over explained the story. Sometimes less is more. But I will always defend that Bear chase though!
I remember playing Cry of Fear when I was way too young (12) and it genuinely scared me. The only other games to do that were Silent Hill 2 and Alien Isolation. Fantastic games.
Condemned is a work of art. I remember chilling after the day and playing this game on my xbox 360, finished all the sequels and felt so satisfied with the campaign. This is one of the example of a horror game done right.
You are pretty lucky, that thing is so damn buggy and poorly optimized that it's torture to play and have sudden crashes or some freak bug that breaks the scripts.

100% agreed!! VISAGE is criminally underrated, I have played almost every horror game possible and nothing came close to the pants pissing terror of VISAGE
If you want a good story/setting, I recommend SOMA. It probably has one of the best stories in video games period. The music, atmosphere, and overall underwater setting only adds to how amazing it is. Definitely Frictional's best game.
@@mrsem6670 most hype comes from "horror and scary". I still dont get it. Alma isnt scary at all. Dead space is the same shit. Just obvious jump scares.
May i suggest Narcosis? It takes place 5,000-ft deep in Pacific Ocean and you are a guy in a diving suit trying to get out alive while dealing with hallucinations caused by high-pressure and some weird spider things while equipped with only a knife, flashlight and flares. It is mostly a survival horror game with a bit of walking simulator. The soundtrack is designed by the same guy that worked on Silent Hill's music and has a pretty awesome way of narrating the story And to clarify two things. 1) It may sound like SOMA, but trust me. Their only common thing is that they take part underwater. 2) Narcosis is mostly grounded. Meaning no aliens or eldrich abominations. Just a guy losing his mind while trying to escape.
I still haven't finished Alien Isolation. Simply because of how successful it is at being a horror game. It's great. The atmosphere, dread, inevitable scares, combined with the save system in the game make it all the more a stressful experience.
I have been playing Amnesia for about 5 years or more now, I absolutely love the game. The contrast in atmospheres, the surrounding, anticipation and anxiety of what comes next is unmatched so far.
The game has mods which make it look like it released 10 years later. Theres also a remake of the first, an enhanced version of the second game, and a third game coming out
Dying Light, at night at least, is a great one. Also how could anyone forget Doom 3. A bit jump-scary but its atmosphere is pretty terrifying. The atmosphere in Bendy and the Ink machine is a bit creepy, too.
Amazing list, though sadly the only one I hadn't already heard of was Into the Gloom. I'm also glad you mentioned Monstrum. That game is probably my favorite horror title of all time, and absolutely needs more attention.
Love the list, Gman! I've gotta do my part to defend Amnesia: A Machine For Pigs, though! Admittedly if you go into it expecting Dark Descent 2, you're going to be disappointed for sure, but personally I find it tells an interesting story with some of the best music and God-tier voice acting I've ever experienced in a game like it. Seriously, I still occasionally listen to the monologue at the end and it still gives me chills. The voice actors put their hearts into it. Would recommend if someone's okay with an Amnesia game being a bit more walking simulator. First half is a bit crap but once the story kicks into gear, people might find it becomes a more memorable experience.
🙂 yes i just bought it on GOG, and yes thats why I bought it because its more of a walking simulator, i also picked up Esther, and im going to pu Kona and Virginia 😊💿💿💿💿
I can only recommend to add Cryostasis to the list as it adds constant level of threat through it's temperature mechanics and tense enemy encounters. Though sadly the game is not running on Win 10 but I highly recommend maybe watching a playthrough so you can still soak in the atmosphere and see in how many creative ways they managed to establish enemy encounters. One section has you shoot enemies literally through a projection on the walls until reaching out and throwing one of its hardest enemies at you. I got carried away, really, just an awesome game if you still have Win 7 to enjoy it.
Since my mans missed a few amazing horror games, i figured i'd make a short list of additions... SOMA - The game that came after the Amnesia series from Frictional Games. If you liked Amnesia then this game is very similar, although it relies more on story and worldbuilding to convey it's horror than monster chases and being in "constant danger". Definitely worth picking up. Penumbra: Overture/Black Plague (though not Requiem) - The games that came before Amnesia from the same developer. Not as shiny or polished as the later games but definitely still worth playing. These games have combat but it's clunky and you thankfully don't have to rely on it. Though if you want to entertain yourself you can try to joust a dog with a broom. Always fun. Third game can safely be ignored as it's just a puzzle game in the same universe. Silent Hill 1/2/3 - Might be hard to get your hands on. Don't think any of them are sold anymore and the first one requires you to use a PS1 emulator or have an original Playstation, but if you don't mind a bit of piracy then these games are a must. Absolutely iconic classic horror games that literally set the foundations for the genre. Anyone who hasn't played them owes it to themselves to do so. The Cat Lady - Indie-horror game about a middle-aged suicidal woman and her struggles in overcoming her demons. It's a 2D sidescroller that focuses mainly on story but it's surprisingly spooky for such a simple game. Darkwood - Top-down 2D survival-horror game where you explore a remote part of the world that is being slowly taken over by a densely growing forest. It's your job to survive, find out what's going on and more importantly to try and get yourself the hell out. Explore the world by day and scavenge for weapons and ammo and other supplies to prepare for the night, which is when shit will really hit the fan. Survive the night and you get rewarded. Die and you wake up the next day with nothing. Definitely worth picking up. Outlast 1/2 - Kind of like Amnesia but with less puzzles. Focuses a lot more on evading monsters and finding notes and such that further the story. You have a camera that lets you see in the dark but it runs on batteries that deplete over time and need to be replaced. Solid recommendation here as well. Dead Space series - This one's a given. Space adventure following an engineer named Isaak Clarke out to find his girlfriend on a distant space-ship used to disassemble planets. Naturally it all goes horribly tits-up and it turns out to not be nearly as easy as all that. Again, classic game that should really be played by anybody who likes action/horror games. System Shock 2 - I am Shodan. That is all. (Seriously, play this game. Just do it. It's cheap and it's amazing.) Doom 3/ROE - Not the scariest and really more of an action game, but still got a few tense moments and definitely worth playing if you like oldschool-style shooters. Cryostasis - A game where you explore a frozen ship in the middle of the arctic to try and find out what happened to it. Has some pretty cool mechanics revolving around heat and cold. Can be a bit frustrating at times if memory serves me correctly, but still a good game to pick up if it's on sale. And that's my short list of additions. More additions are welcome! You can never have too many good horror games :)
Alien Isolation is extremely underrated imo, i guess every player just use the same tactics and tools in encounter making the game repetitive. Also i would love a Dead Space reboot actually. Think about the RE team and RE engine bringing one of my fav series back to life.
I only just recently discovered that a gun (revolver), albeit extremely dangerous to yourself, is actually a very useful situational instrument...gotta love how this game can literally scare one into NOT using nor even trying out some mechanics that have very intended but risky utilizations.
FYI, in Cry of Fear pressing the alternate fire button with the knife makes Simon switch to another gripped stance that causes him to stab like you wanted
I recommand S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Series (SoC and CoP) for the labo X16, X18, Jupiter and the power plant. And also Witch Hunt an indie game made by 1 person, reminds me the movie the Witch and Blairwitch.
Alien: Isolation is one of my favourite games of all time. It's also much more than a first person horror title. It borrows a lot of elements from immersive-sims, such as System Shock 2, so it has a very deep and varied gameplay. Condemned is great, but I think the second one is even better - unfortunately though, I never finished that, only the first one, and now I'm patiently waiting till that becomes playable well enough on an emulator. As for the other titles, I haven't played them, but they look interesting so I'll check them out later. Oh, and you missed Resident Evil 7, which is the best in the series in my opinion.
This is like the 5th or 6th UA-camr I like to watch this week that have brought up Alien: Isolation. I love that game and all of you! Thank you for showing it the love it deserves.
I haven’t started watching this video, but if Stalker,Fear,Doom 3, Call of Cthulu and Condemned aren’t on here it’s a disappointment. I have a soft spot for mid 2000’s titles.
Layers of fear suuuuccckkkssss Sorry man it just feels so manufactured and you never feel tense knowing it's just a simple puzzle sim And it's definitely not the best looking game on the list when alien followed it. The lighting and smoke/fog effects in that game are still amazing The alien also looks amazing. That game is tense as hell. Also let's get some love for Resident Evil 7
Vaughan Bury I absolutely agree 💯! I have NEVER been scared of (playing) a video game in my life until I played Alien Isolation. I had to stop playing for like 6months after my brother got me that game because I couldn’t handle it! Needless to say I fell in love with the game. Xenomorphs Rule💯🔥💚👽
Second one sucks, though. The combat is dumbed down, barely impacting, and doesn't feel anywhere close to the original. The AI is completely stupid and doesn't synergise with the level design like the first. The art style became the generic quasi-futuristic military tech look, and the lightning and destruction effects aren't even close to the original. The Replicas also lack the personality of the original and the enemies are generic as hell. The only worthwhile part of the game is the school level and the overall story about Alma. Take that out and this is your standard generic military shooter. Also they fucked up the shotgun. Like, really badly.
Hell ya I’d love to see more videos like this! It’s always nice to see some of the game recommendations you have to help us gamers find more fun shooters and such

I played a lot of condemned and a lot of the darkness
SOMA personally, was a masterpiece for me. I still think about the ending.

@@NerdyPro Tell that to the Hydroponics deck. Those fucking cyborg midwives calling out to you..... *shudders
It's a horror game alright, though more of a survival horror RPG than FPS.
Still, SHODAN is hands down one of the scariest characters in video games.
@@NickHunter Yeah or jumping on grinding teeth in the body of the many. Fucking disgusting.
I love that as soon as the first frame of Condemned's beginning cutscene appeared, I knew what game it was.
I remember playing Cry of Fear when I was way too young (12) and it genuinely scared me. The only other games to do that were Silent Hill 2 and Alien Isolation. Fantastic games.
SagieBoi silent hill 2 fucking ruined me as a kid lmao
Bro ngl cry of fear is legit one of the best horror experiences ever
Happy Halloween Gman and everyone else.
Yeah, Fear 1 was probably the scariest of the series. We also dont talk about fear 3.
🙂 fear 3 is not on gog 😊

Alien isolation is one of my favorite horror game of all time
Condemned is a work of art. I remember chilling after the day and playing this game on my xbox 360, finished all the sequels and felt so satisfied with the campaign. This is one of the example of a horror game done right.
Honestly IMO I think System Shock 2 is one of the best "horror" games I've played. The atmosphere, isolation, never scared me like anything else.
The apple orchard/farmhouse section in Condemned still scares me to this day. Amazing atmosphere.
Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the earth is on GoG and for me it ran perfectly.
You are pretty lucky, that thing is so damn buggy and poorly optimized that it's torture to play and have sudden crashes or some freak bug that breaks the scripts.
@@brianboniuk1072 There is a "recent" fan patch that repairs many bugs and worked great for me. Look for "DCoTE Unofficial Patch v1.7" in moddb.

For me the first half of Resident Evil 7 was perfect. When Lucas took over it lost all tension.
Only just started playing, but I thought Outlast would be on this.
Well yeah but basically everyone has already played it or at least seen it anyways

"Visage" is fantastic! One of the best! Never was so scared to play alone at night since first Amnesia. Masterpiece!
I wish more people knew Visãge
100% agreed!! VISAGE is criminally underrated, I have played almost every horror game possible and nothing came close to the pants pissing terror of VISAGE
0:40 jokes on you, my Halloween costume is jeffery Epstein.
Zombie Epstein
the suicide Epstein, now that would be the horror
If you want a good story/setting, I recommend SOMA. It probably has one of the best stories in video games period. The music, atmosphere, and overall underwater setting only adds to how amazing it is. Definitely Frictional's best game.
It's definitely underated. I wish more people knew about it.
Silent Hill 2 would like to know your location
That game is reddit asf. I hated it.
@@davidabest7195 ???? Ok buddy lmao
Good stuff, I would of added FEAR as well & Doom 3.
FEAR is such an overrated game. Played id just 2 weeks ago. It is just jumpscares and thats all.
Meh, fear and Doom 3 are good games, but it doesnt really terrify you. Its a fps first and horror game second
both are action FPS with dark esthetics, but not horror games because the focus is in the action
@@BratislavMetulski Weren't people loves fear because of its action rather than horror
The soundtrack is designed by the same guy that worked on Silent Hill's music and has a pretty awesome way of narrating the story
And to clarify two things. 1) It may sound like SOMA, but trust me. Their only common thing is that they take part underwater. 2) Narcosis is mostly grounded. Meaning no aliens or eldrich abominations. Just a guy losing his mind while trying to escape.
It’s insane that we haven’t gotten a sequel to isolation yet. Best horror game I’ve played since dead space.
Not many things they can go off of from the movie stories though
I still haven't finished Alien Isolation. Simply because of how successful it is at being a horror game. It's great. The atmosphere, dread, inevitable scares, combined with the save system in the game make it all the more a stressful experience.
Alien Isolation came out in 2014 not 2015!
Personally I would have added Outlast 1 to the list, however I know that Outlast isn’t for everyone.
Condemned! Much respect on that one. It's so underrated.
I have been playing Amnesia for about 5 years or more now, I absolutely love the game. The contrast in atmospheres, the surrounding, anticipation and anxiety of what comes next is unmatched so far.
Was surprised System Shock 2 wasn’t mentioned.
I played it a few years ago, aside from the graphics of course, the game holds very well, good atmosphere and enemies, lots of weapons and skills.
The game has mods which make it look like it released 10 years later. Theres also a remake of the first, an enhanced version of the second game, and a third game coming out
Alien isolation and RE7 both legit had me shook while I was playing them. Can't recommended them enough.
Dying Light, at night at least, is a great one.
Also how could anyone forget Doom 3. A bit jump-scary but its atmosphere is pretty terrifying.
The atmosphere in Bendy and the Ink machine is a bit creepy, too.
Dying Light ain't really a horror game, but the night volative chases can indeed get pretty intense.
Yea nighttime was scary
Good to see condemned criminal origins still getting love.
I love your channel, you have great content
Just do it. It's cheap and it's amazing.)
Doom 3/ROE - Not the scariest and really more of an action game, but still got a few tense moments and definitely worth playing if you like oldschool-style shooters.
The video is for First Person Horror Games, really surprised he didn't mention Outlast tho.
The Cat Lady
I see you're a man of culture as well.
Sound design on Soma was incredible!
@@SwallowFury You know it.
Clive Barker's Undying was also an awesome experience back in the day ^^
Alien Isolation is extremely underrated imo, i guess every player just use the same tactics and tools in encounter making the game repetitive.
Also i would love a Dead Space reboot actually. Think about the RE team and RE engine bringing one of my fav series back to life.
There's a game called Negative Atmosphere coming out which is basically Dead Space 4
I only just recently discovered that a gun (revolver), albeit extremely dangerous to yourself, is actually a very useful situational instrument...gotta love how this game can literally scare one into NOT using nor even trying out some mechanics that have very intended but risky utilizations.
Jesus this channel is why the term criminally underrated exists because that's just what it is subbed for sure
Honestly, i'm kind of glad Outlast didn't make it on the list
Tbh outlast was one of the best horror games to play idk why it's not on your list

Oh yeah, recommended some badass games too
Disappointed with the lack of Fallout 76 on the list.
FYI, in Cry of Fear pressing the alternate fire button with the knife makes Simon switch to another gripped stance that causes him to stab like you wanted
There's also Cold Fear, which is pretty good. Give it a shot.

I really liked you doing this format. Fast and informative.
Soma is one of my favorites.
A good mum joke without a schwacked is like putting nice shoes on the wrong feet.
The penumbra series is way scarier than amnesia imo(same devs)
Naw 20 The first one I might agree with you, the second game I wouldn’t, and I don’t think the third is a horror game at all.
Playing Amnesia for the first time blind on the Switch. Truly a terrifying game!
I recommand S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Series (SoC and CoP) for the labo X16, X18, Jupiter and the power plant.
And also Witch Hunt an indie game made by 1 person, reminds me the movie the Witch and Blairwitch.
great stuffy dude! liked the blood slatter and the intro cinematic/clip!
The second one wasnt better. Beat it and then go back to the first.
Condemned games
The 2nd one wasn't better for sure
Condemned series is underrated ///one of the greats on xbox 360//beat both of them multiple times
No one should play games of any sort at 8 FPS.

Sorry man it just feels so manufactured and you never feel tense knowing it's just a simple puzzle sim

The alien also looks amazing.

Xenomorphs Rule💯🔥💚👽
my recommendations:
American McGee's Alice
The park
Through the woods
Blood
Limbo
Dead space
Grim Fandango
Great fucking list! Alice Madness Returns was also incredible
Great games, but most of these aren't first person.
The Park? Really? I thought that game was a totally bland snooze fest
My top 5 would be: Outlast, alien isolation, condemned, resident evil 7 and outlast 2.
Play the F.E.A.R. games too, at least the first two.
He mentioned it at the end of the video.
That third fear game got the condemned 2 bloodshot treatment, only worse.
