I am in Wind Gap PA area zone 6a and have overwintered desert king fig by wrapping in a tarp and burying it. No damage this past winter even with sub zero temperatures.
Thanks for the vid. This is my first season growing figs in SE PA zone 6b. So far my collection is Malta Black, Marseilles Black, Allentown Black, Unk Sicilian Dark, I-258, VDB, Lattarula, Celeste, Brown Turkey and Paradiso Bronze! Trying to focus on trees that will do well in ground.
Being in New Jersey close to New York: it was a cold spring. I noticed my in ground trees just starting to take off now. The single stem truck trees did not do as well. Great video Ross

Were you set back greatly? In my Atlanta area my fig trees are huge already so I’m pinching already. It’s crazy because I’m in 7b so our zones aren’t much different but I guess there is still great variation 🤔
We had a few really cold days late that pushed a bunch back, I live like 30 miles from Ross.
It's been a slow year, but Atlanta's growing season is like a month ahead of mine at least.
I'm 35 miles south of Atlanta Locust Grove GA I75 Exit 212, I planted a Smith in ground in late fall it died back but is coming back now I thought i lost it 🥴 I guess the root system wasn't big enough or something, but i guess this coming winter it will be able to handle the cold weather that we get here,
all the tips on other 2 in ground tress got burned, the Smith was about a year old in a one gallon pot I'll make sure I put them in the ground in the spring after last frost from now on so a better root system gets established.
@@AveryOCason glad you didn’t lose it. Smith was one of my first varieties. Mine is in a 15 gallon grow bag. My late season varieties like cravens craving, Col de dame blanc, and Bordissot Negra Rimada all already have figlets so hopefully I will get fruit from them in August/September 👍

I obtain cuttings of those varieties this year and Im up potted them now to 5 gallon pots I got the cuttings of CC from Padsfan he discovered it so I got them from original mother tree I got CdDB from him which is the Bauld variety and the BNR plant I got came from fruitnut I will one day start putting more of my potted varieties in ground I'm a year into collecting I got to recount I'm sure i got over 50 varieties so far I've lost count I got to write them all down and do a better job of keeping up with them
Glad to see your in ground trees are doing fine. My in ground Chicago hardy died back to the ground here but it’s making nice progress back.
I had a large improved celest that survived for like 3 years and got thick but died this last season from the cold uncovered.

Hey Ross I been collecting and growing for a year now other than a brown turkey I planted about 4 years ago didn't think i would ever plant another fig tree then i got to looking at your videos and have learned a lot from you and from other growers your a great asset to the community so i started learning how many varieties there are and became very interested in figs last spring, sort of got bit by the bug is an understatement for me ha ha! 😀 I really enjoyed this video and all the info you shared on these different varieties and how your, winters effect them there in your up state area. Will you have any trees to sale anytime soon? Take care, and thanks for all you do to educate us and help us newbies along on this passionate hobby we enjoy,

I heard Figoin VDR is pretty cold hardy, did you plant any of those in ground?
I have a few. None established enough to give an opinion yet, but that's the word from many European growers.
I had a brown turkey in ground with no protection that died back to ground. I am in zone 7a. It was not in the house but it does get sun from sun wise to sunset. I am knew at this and I did not even know it needed protection at the time. My figs are in full sun, in the same zone but are further behind.
Did you dig up the trees that were planted on a 2 foot spacing?
They're all spaced at 2 ft. There's well over 100 like that.
I had got a Chicago hardy fig tree last year from stark bros. It was dormant when they sent it and I had replanted it in a big pot when I got it. I had put it outside zone 7b NY and so far it has not broken out yet. No sign of anything. Any suggestions? You think it's dead? I thought this variety could take the cold. Unless Stark bros sold me another worthless tree like they did with my jiro persimmon.
Try the scratch test.
I did scratch test this past Monday and it's dead. So, 2 trees I've have gotten from stark bros didn't make it.
I can't get my LSU Tiger to bud. It's a rebel. I have also noticed how different figs are. I decided it was sensitivity attributed to the environment they came from. But you are showing they can be very different in the same environment. It's almost like they have their own personalities.
There are so many variables. Soil moisture and warmth will help wake them up quicker.
Hi Ross...thank u for video..since your in PA &I live in NJ we have a same climate..my question is...does fig tree likes to be on the 🌞 24/7or need only a little 🌞 light. My fig tree leaves turns almost white color from being on the 🌞..tbank u
I feel the need to chime in in case Ross doesn’t; if your leaves are turning white you are probably getting sunburn. You need to acclimate the trees to sun and make sure to water them. They definitely want full day sun 👍
As much light as possible.
I live in Phoenix and even here figs want all day sun. It’s never an issue of too much sun
Hey Ross, I notice you don't talk about the variety Desert King. Considering it being Cold Hardy and somewhat split resistant from what I hear, why is or isn't it an Ideal pick like Chicago hardy? I'm in Zone 4A. I Have Also observed a plastic tub against my house buried in a foot and a half of snow not getting below 30 degrees F in -25 degree weather.
Josh. DK is a great variety, but last year's growth has to survive the winter (the tips of the branches) to fruit. It's a San Pedro type fig that requires pollination of its main crop. We do not have the fig wasp in our cold locations. If it survives, that's a nice tree to have for sure. It's just difficult protecting a large tree.
@@RossRaddi I do not think I have a long enough growing season to worry about a main crop. With it being around 135 days depending on the year. I was thinking that Desert king would do fine if I could give it enough protection. I think I will also look to get a Little Ruby for a smaller tree to protect.
Also do you think a brown turkey fig tree would survive zone 7b NY outdoors for winter? I always bring it indoors during the winter.
There are 3 types of brown Turkey. Two of which would, the other wouldn't. Which one do you have?
@@RossRaddi unfortunately I don't know got it from a farmers market years ago, I believe the vendor told me not to put it outside during the winter

I do not.
Thinning begins as early as possible.
do you have any issues with roots and foundation?
No. And I doubt that I ever will.
Figs are known to have a shallow root system
