What are your thoughts on releasing an EP / Album using this strategy with the last release being the final product? For example, release 5 singles at 1 month apart with the 5th release being the “EP,” which includes the previous releases? My only thought on this is the ability to have a printed medium like a CD or Vinyl to sell at shows, online, etc. I hope that makes sense.
Totally agree Tom, not to mention it's much more sustainable both creatively and financially. Assuming you are not recording your music yourself, it's completely possible to knock out a couple songs in one day session every couple of months at a great studio and not break the bank. Having a consistent release schedule and new things on the horizon also feels less scummy when advertising to your fans, instead of pestering them to listen to the same record 6 months to a year after the fact. Great video!
This is a great point and one I completely failed to address in the video. The long-term possibility of burning out is way higher if you're trying to pump out 3-6 songs every couple of months instead of just one, not to mention to amount of money you're going to spend is much higher as well. Thank you for sharing this. And thank you for watching!
Also you can focus all your marketing, promotion, and advertising efforts on just that one song, maximizing its plays and your chances of triggering algorithms, getting noticed by editorial playlists, etc. No other song will be neglected while you do this (aside from ones that have already been out for at least six weeks).
Great advice and explanation! I was about to release an EP as a new artist but after watching your videos I’m going to divide my EP into singles and garner fans in that way instead! 🥰 Thank you so much! ❤️
Great insight man, 100% agree with this. I usually say artists should do new single releases every 4-6 weeks, but that any faster is too much unless they have a specific strategy for it that necessitates that speed. So your 6 week recommendation is on point with that. The cool thing is that you can always just release a 'singles album' of your songs from that year if you wanted to, with 1 extra song and some interludes. That way you can still have albums available, but still drop everything as single's.
Dude thanks so much for sharing your thoughts on this. I was genuinely curious about what your take on this might be when I was making this one. I love that you agree on the six week strategy. And that is an excellent point about the end-of-year singles album. Especially if you follow the six week cycle. You’ll have 8 songs at the end of the year. Hit ‘em with a 9th, an intro, and some interludes, and you’ve got a body of work. Genius!
@@tomdupreeiii Thanks for the insight Tom. I've always wondered how that works though. For instance, how does one re-release an existing song on, say, Spotify as part of the new group/album. I heard Apple music for instance would consider something like that as a collection and not an album. I'll appreciate more clarity on this. thanks.
@SOLLO7 great question! You can include a song in multiple bodies of work as long as you use the same metadata when uploading it-song title, artist name, and ISRC code. As long as those things are the same, you can include an already-released song in an album at a later date. In fact, you could include it in multiple albums if you wanted to. Just put that information in when you upload for distribution and your distribution platform should handle the rest. Thank you for the question!
It may be genre specific but why not promote singles from an album that was already released? Personally I don't care for singles and I think at least rock and metal audience is album-oriented.
Thank you so much for this comment! I'm really happy to hear that the information is clear and that it feels genuine. My goal is to be as transparent as possible in my videos, so I'm really happy to hear that it translates. Thanks for watching!
Kinda screwed up..on my fifth album..but will release singles first then album at the end. On the up side my forth album did pretty well for me. I got 100 followers on Spotify plus I only spent $300 promo for the album rather tha 10x$300 singles...there are some advantages for albums too..especially if you have fillers

Agreed! I often try to explain this to recording clientele, However the desire to make an album is strong from years of industry tradition, and a desire to emulate the release patterns of the artists of yesteryear, i suppose
I'm so glad you agree! I've experienced that too with clients. I think there's a certain sexiness or sense of accomplishment that comes with a full-length album. Like some sort of credibility thing. Not gonna lie, I feel the tug as well, but I have to fight it because it's just not the smart move yet. Thanks for the comment!
What if you're an indie electronic music beatmaker ? If you have multiple 2 minute tracks that all sound good when played back to back like a playlist? Wouldn't it make sense to drop beat tapes/albums?
The reality is though, just from my personal reference frame maybe you know heaps of people, there isn't one person I know of that listens to spotify regularly. I only listen to music via YT.
See, I’m the exact opposite. Most everyone I know listens to music on Spotify or Apple Music, but almost no one consumes music on UA-cam. That’s interesting to note. Different methods for different people I guess!
Very true. It is much easier to turn the ears of bloggers, etc. with a bigger body of work. I definitely believe in the power of blogs and reviews. I think the smart move is to give yourself a bit more leverage with them by building a fanbase before even pursuing that step. If they see existing momentum on top of a fresh body of work coming out, I think that can only help the chances of getting reviewed. The single cycle is like a precursor to the review step. Thanks for the comment!
I'm so glad to hear it got you thinking on how you're gonna do things moving forward! Keep testing and trying things. Thanks for watching and commenting!
I have actually been releasing my music as singles in the past and I was thinking about releasing my next few tracks as an EP. I guess I'll be sticking to releasing singles after watching this.
What if you have some older work that you just want to get out there. Also what if you dont have the luxury to be able to wait weeks between singles. Ive got 8 months to take a serious attempt at being a full time musician.
Questions: * Could I just release an Album and make sure the best song ( aka the would be single)...have that be the first song, and my next best be the second? That way I have 11-12 songs out there, but they are for sure hearing the one I want them to first. * Can you release an Album & also release 3-4 songs from that album as singles?
Yes, you can do either one. The ideal version would be to release 10 songs as singles every four to six weeks and then drop the full album with an additional one or two songs on it at the end of the cycle. You'll get the maximum amount of exposure for you music that way.
@@tomdupreeiii Solid Idea. Does that screw with scream count numbers? I was trying to figure out how you take singles and re-release them as an album without it screwing things up. @@ryanperrault8174 as long as you use the same master and same ISRC code, you can drop a song multiple times on different albums, singles, and EPs and the streams should all sync up under the same song on Spotify.

@@ryanperrault8174 I’m sure there are many that will disagree but I don’t think there is any benefit to having more than one artist name. The end goal is to connect with your audience. Plus it’s two intellectual properties for you to manage. More work for no benefit in my opinion.
Yeah, you can release singles from you EP. The ideal way to do it would be to release every track as a single ahead of the release of all of them as en EP at the end of the cycle.
thanks, that's great advice, although I think the sweet spot is once a month :) And IMHO the first release at least being 3 songs at once so people who listen to one of them and look you up have something else to listen. thanks! :)
I think you're right. Getting music out once a month is a great benchmark to shoot for. More than that though, I believe consistency is key. Most have trouble executing that frequently without burning out. I think putting in the reps will increase output though, so it's definitely something to aim for. And more music out the better. It's good to have a body of work for people to dig into.
Just talked about this on my live stream yesterday lol. It really comes down to how you're promoting the release. Pushing a single can be disastrous if you're advertising - depending on where you want listeners to go - but it's the best thing to do if you're submitting to playlists and the press.
Nice! I think of it more in terms of gradually and consistently growing a fanbase over time. If you're trying to do a big launch and throwing a ton of promotion behind a song, then you definitely need something more to send people to (e.g. album, EP, or existing body of previous singles). Traditional single promotion in support of a bigger body of work needs an album to be the final destination for sure. But if you're going the playlist route and direct to consumer ad route with a sensible daily ad spend and not a big spike in expense for the release itself, then I think singles are the best strategy. But of course, if you have a fanbase to advertise to on a large scale, then a single push in support of an album makes sense! Thanks for the comment!
Sounds great! I think it would be also great to combine this idea with the video from Graham. Just to realise especially a single once all 2 or 3 months but later to make also an EP once as a special gift for the fans that you got by the time!

Hi Tom, A while back, I swear I found a video of yours, where you explain how to release multiple singles in the same place, as it is builds to an album. (if that makes sense) I'm searching all over your channel, and I can't seem to find it. Any chance you could help? Thanks
I'm glad someone has honestly and succinctly explained why this should be the case. I grew up in Metal bands where it's commonplace to release EPs before singles but when I started delving into Music Production away from the genre, it always confused me as to why electronic artists release as mostly singles. Makes a lot of sense, I just wish Spotify would make it a bit easier to keep the tracks playing when you've selected a certain single (or maybe I'm just doing it wrong). Great content and great channel dude.
Man I’m so glad this video resonated with you. I used to live in that same mindset of EPs and albums. I often have to remind myself that the landscape has just changed dramatically in the last 5-10 years too, so I can’t beat myself up about being stuck in the old way for so long. Thank you for watching and commenting!
my plan is as follows: First single: beginning of november Second single: end of november Full EP (including song 1 +2 ): beginning of december. Is that fine? It's my first time to release music
That may be a little close together. Release the first one at the beginning of November and then wait until mid-January to release the second one. Full EP in March.
Update may 2023 First single mid November 2022 Second single end of january 2023 Third single end of march 2023 Single 4+5 mid may 2023 Last single July
I definitely see the value in dropping mixtapes. Because it's not a part of my strategy, it's not something I've spent a lot of time thinking about, but I will start to think about how that might fit into the overall plan for an artist. Thanks for the comment!
does this work for distrokid too? if i wanna release a single containing two-three songs. just worried if distrokid will release it as an EP instead of a single
Hi, guess a maxi is included in the singles category? I have new stuff for 3 songs, 1 main song, 1 mix from main, 1 bonus song..I also signed up with a distributor already. Can you make promo for me, you seem competent (I would pay of course). Really the promo stuff burns me out sigh :( Or do you have a tipp for people who make promo for such music ? My style is mostly dark electronics (but with oontz oontz and some sparse melodies), not that I expect any top10 hits from this to be clear lol Well like you explained I should break up the maxi to 3 singles ?
This is a great question. If it were me, I would create three releases. I’d release two songs individually, six weeks apart, and then I’d release all three as the maxi six weeks after the release of the second track as the maxi-single / EP, which of course would feature one new bonus song. If, however, you’re married to the idea of leaving it as is, I say stick with your gut but just make sure you’ve got material to follow it up with for your next release. And, no I’m afraid I can’t help with the promo for you. That’s not something I have the bandwidth to take on at the moment. But I appreciate you asking!
@@tomdupreeiii Guess one needs to adapt to new listening trends and shorter attention spans of many these days...yeah I figured you would have no time for doing promo for others, but asked anyway. I noted there are some at fiverr for example which offer promo - but most of it seems quite sketchy. Eg. they offer to share your music on a blog or review site, but who knows how many that even read? Or target your songs to a 100000 listerners ? Must be bots I guess. Also there is no seperation in styles, what would I have from promoting my msuic to hardcore jazz, metal or hiphop fans when it is totally different..zero
@Underground Sounds yeah, a more frequent release cycle is definitely the way to go these days. I would recommend digging into Facebook Ads for promotion. That has delivered the best results for me, by far.
Do you think the approach we're taking on our channel with doing gig videos and vlog videos is a promising one? Would love to hear feedback and have a private chat with you!
Absolutely. I’d say just making any videos, period, is a huge step in the right direction. Video content is king. Specifically, vlogging was a great step for me. I did one every weekday for about a 9 months, and it really helped me hone my video chops in a short period of time. You’ll figure out what works and what doesn’t pretty quickly. Good luck! Thanks for the comment!
Weird question.. if I release those singles at the pace you mentioned.. would I be able to make those singles into an album down the line? (I ask because I have like 2 albums already made but unreleased but if I take your advice, can I release the songs individually and they can still be considered songs from an album down the line?)
I don't agree an artists should release singles every 6 to 8 weeks for several years. When The Doors released their first record the only people that knew about them were LA people. The blew up every where when that record came out. The Olivia Rodrigo. She released a few songs before Sour and she didn't build a fanbase on those songs. It's the Sour record that blew up. When Van Halen released their first record it blew and though played a lot of shows in LA they were all cover songs. When VH1 came out he blew because the songs were so awesome and Eddie's playing was killer. There's an artist called Carolesdaughter and for the past two years she has only released singles and eve after her song Violent blew up on KROQ her label Arista continued to release singles and she finally released an EP with some of her singles and a couple of new songs. She has a new song dropping tonight June 24, 2022.
I am thinking this idea - several years of releases could also work for my film series, it's not music, but it's the same marketing concept. Thanks! Episodes = Singles!
I love that! It could totally apply! In fact, I would love to see more film creators take a more episodic approach. I personally would be way on board with a series built on short installments that I could watch at my leisure. Sort of like what Quibi seems to be pursuing. Thanks for the comment!

I often have to remind myself that the landscape has just changed dramatically in the last 5-10 years too, so I can’t beat myself up about being stuck in the old way for so long. Thank you for watching and commenting!
@@tomdupreeiii I guess your advice of trusting the potential listener to move onto more of your material is solid!
my plan is as follows:
First single: beginning of november
Second single: end of november
Full EP (including song 1 +2 ): beginning of december.
Is that fine?
It's my first time to release music
That may be a little close together. Release the first one at the beginning of November and then wait until mid-January to release the second one. Full EP in March.
Update may 2023
First single mid November 2022
Second single end of january 2023
Third single end of march 2023
Single 4+5 mid may 2023
Last single
July
What about mixtapes ?
I definitely see the value in dropping mixtapes. Because it's not a part of my strategy, it's not something I've spent a lot of time thinking about, but I will start to think about how that might fit into the overall plan for an artist. Thanks for the comment!
Bro your dope
Thanks dude!
does this work for distrokid too? if i wanna release a single containing two-three songs. just worried if distrokid will release it as an EP instead of a single
If I screwed up and did the album first, can I add singles from it after? Or should I delete the album and do it the way you suggest ?
How can I release a few songs as singles from an album that's not out yet then release the rest as the full album?
Absolutely!
You're amazing thank you
Happy to help!
I have an album that is 7 songs running at less than 21 minutes and it is showing as an "ALBUM".
Musa I of Mali that’s good to know!
That's pretty smart! 👍
Glad you think so!
Thanks for the info though, appreciated. Peace out
You bet man. Thank you for watching!
Yeah, absolutely. That's a great move.
Anyone with that T-shirt/throwback to Home Alone gets an instant like and comment xD
